Dressing the

Bride

Choosing the wedding dress is one of the most exciting tasks for any bride. Look for a wedding dress that enhances your figure with a flattering cut, style and fabric that will make you feel fabulous on your special day.

T

o look your best be sure to have your dress expertly fitted whether it is a designer gown or an off the peg or on-line purchase, with final fittings 1-2 weeks before the wedding. A gown that fits you perfectly should not be too loose or too tight, while allowing you to be comfortable, relaxed, move freely and sit down or stand up with ease. Wedding gowns are very varied but generally fall into 3 categories of shape: The classic A- line, an elegant fitted or draped skirt, or the fuller Cinderella style. Together with empire line or dropwaisted variations, these styles can enhance or disguise aspects of body shape if necessary.

Wedding dresses use the most gorgeous fabrics; silk, satin, lace, chiffon, voile, brocade, and crepe that may be shirred, embroidered, beaded, pleated, gathered, draped and shaped into the dress of your dreams. When choosing the fabric, as well as price and practicality you will want to consider its appropriateness for the season, time of day and location of your wedding. The bust, face, neck, shoulders and upper arms can all be accentuated or downplayed as you wish by the style of your gown’s neckline! Consider what flatters you the most; strapless, halter, shoestring, off the shoulder or backless styles or perhaps square, sweetheart,

boat neck, portrait or scoop necklines. The current popularity of lace or sheer illusion necklines is especially flattering. While most brides opt for the traditional “white” wedding gown, there are many shades of white that will suit different skin and hair tones. Different fabrics will also alter the hue or sheen of the shade when it catches the light. A wedding dress does not have to be white and there are stunning alternatives such as silver, gold, marshmallow and magnolia. It is best to test the fabric in natural light again the skin tone of your face. If a particular shade makes the skin look ruddy, sallow or too pale, it should be avoided.

Wedding Hair Wedding hair needs expert attention for a look that will wow but also stay in place all day.

ook a consultation with a hairdresser who specializes in weddings. Bring photos of looks you like, and it will help if you have already selected your dress. The style and neckline of the dress will influence the hairstyle and whether it suits your hair up or down. Decide whether you want to have your hair done in a salon or if the hairdresser needs to come to the venue. There will be an extra charge for this, but it is more convenient and less stressful. Make sure you schedule plenty of time for hair and makeup. Bouncy curls are popular and look contemporary styled with GHDs. If curling your hair, do not wash it the same morning – for optimum curls and hold, your hair should not be squeaky clean, but not oily either. Sleek chignons, French rolls or topknot ponytails are also sophisticated looks that impart glamour without the need for a headpiece. Feathers or beads can be added to the knot for extra drama. For a coordinated bridal party look, the bridesmaids can have a simpler version of

the bride’s look. If you have several bridesmaids, it looks very chic to have them with the same hair style. Little bobby pins with tiny crystal beads look gorgeous. Prep your hair for the big day by getting your tresses in tip top shape in the months before. Drink lots of water. Follow a well balanced eating plan and if you are dieting before the wedding make sure your hair doesn’t suffer. Include protein, iron and a vitamin supplement. Lots of green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts and omega 3 rich salmon will help hair look healthy and glossy. Invest in a professional salon shampoo and conditioner. You will notice the difference and it will ensure your hair is in top shape. Have regular trims to remove split ends. As well as your regular conditioner, use a weekly hair masque, and stay out of the sun and chlorinated waters. A head massage will stimulate the scalp and promote healthy hair growth. Treat yourself or do it yourself when washing your hair. For an extra treat before the wedding, an ayurvedic head massage with essential oils is botth relaxiing and d greatt for hair.

Looking beautiful on your big day Your dress been chosen, the venue is booked and the invitations have been sent. Everything on your list is getting ticked off.

N

ow is the time to start working towards healthy, glowing skin. Follow our simple plan from Caci and you’ll be putting your best face forward on your big day:

Six months to go

Have a free consultation at Caci (Call the Whangarei clinic on 09 438 1942), they will be able to recommend the best options for your skin. Depending on your needs, here are some of the treatments they might recommend: ! Uneven skin texture: Microdermabrasion, removes dead skin cells and encourages circulation, leaving skin fresh and soft and even in texture. ! Redness and dark spots/ sun damage: Photo Rejuvenation can help to reduce broken capillaries, redness and dark spots. ! Scarring: Collagen induction (dermal rolling) is a treatment which encourages the production of collagen to plump up the skin.

!

Lines and wrinkles: Frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet can all be softened using appearance medicine. Caci are one of the largest appearance medicine providers and we have easy payment plans to make paying for treatments easy.

One week to go

One final treatment a week before your wedding is ideal. Be wary of trying anything new this close to your big day. It only takes one new ingredient that your skin doesn’t like to trigger an allergy or break out - and that’s a stress no bride needs!

On the day:

Follow your normal skincare routine. Get at least eight hours sleep if you can! Leave the rest up to the makeup artist and enjoy the day! To find out more by calling 0800 458 458 or visiting caci.co.nz!

Choosing the Ring Choosing the rings is a very exciting time. The sentiment behind the ring is a symbol of your love and devotion to each other. The physical structure of the Wedding Ring is a circle which means “forever”. There is no beginning and no end.

W

hile we hear so often, that Diamonds are a girl’s best friend…..many couples are now choosing other stones to symbolise their love for each other. Really it comes down to personal choice and it also comes down to budget and what you can afford. Keep in mind it will need to be a style that will stay with you for years to come. You may like a hand-crafted engagement ring with a matching wedding band. Go to your jeweller and look at the various designs, you will surely find one that you love or that can be tailored to your ‘perfect’ style. Your jeweller will be more than happy to work with you through the process and offer you advice on the best combinations. Ready-made rings are available in a great selection of styles and designs. You can both go together and spend the time trying on the various options. Traditionally the groom- to- be proposed with the Engagement ring

already purchased, however these days most couples work together in choosing the design. While it may seem romantic that the groom-to-be went to the effort of choosing the ring, it may not really be to your taste! Therefore an awkward situation could arise where you either have to go back to the jewellery shop where it was purchased to try and seek a refund (not always available) or to choose another ring. The alternative

would be to wear a ring you do not feel comfortable with – which is not a good way to start your new journey together. The best advice would be to share this moment together! While there is romance in the giving and sharing of rings, there also comes quite an expense. Things to take into account are whether the ring comes with a guarantee and after care service. You should also look at your insurance and ensure you include the rings in your list of contents.

Ring

Setting

Styles of rings and settings come in and out of fashion, but you may find a particular design suits the shape of your hand or your lifestyle, regardless of current popularity. Prong Setting

The stone or stones are held by prongs that are curved over the rim of the gem. As most of its facets are visible in this type of setting, light shines through it and increases sparkle.

Channel Setting

A line of stones is set flush between two strips of metal, which secures the stones effectively and prevents extra wear and tear.

Pave Setting

Has lots of sparkle because the ring’s surface is covered in many tiny stones

that makeup the overall design. This is currently a very popular style.

Bezel Setting

Used frequently for solitaire and large stones, the gemstone is circled by a metal or ‘rub over’ rim that holds the stone in place and protects its edges.

Metals

Gold has been the most enduring choice for wedding bands because of its value and longevity. However, white gold and platinum and titanium have all become popular in contemporary times. Whatever

the preference, the wedding ring should match the engagement ring in style, colour and shape. The giving and receiving of a ring at the wedding ceremony is a custom of many cultures and formally seals the marriage. Symbolically the unbroken shape of the ring recognizes the unbreakable vows of marriage and is intended to be worn for a lifetime. Therefore when purchasing engagement and wedding rings, be sure to buy from a reputable jeweller, get certificates of valuation and always insure your rings against loss and theft.

eautiful flowers decorate every aspect of a wedding and they are worn or carried by the bride, groom and wedding party to add splendor and radiance. Floral arrangements can be chosen to match themes, colours or special meanings, and brides can select flowers to complement each segment of the day. Flowers that represent love, purity and innocence are traditionally sued in wedding ceremonies, and greenery is included for contrast and meaning. Creative additions are endless. Ivy represents fidelity and honeysuckle relates to pure affection. Gardenias impart a meaning of joy. Violets convey modesty and faithfulness and daisies relate to a sharing of feelings. The most popular flowers for weddings are roses, lilies, freesias, snapdragons, calla lilies, orchids, tulips, hydrangeas and gardenias. But anything goes, and you can make your wedding as dazzling as you like. It’s a great idea to visit a florist early in the planning, to discuss your ideas and get a wider perspective. It’s also helpful if you have your bridal gown and bridesmaid’s dresses selected, or at least have an idea of the colours that will be involved. Ask your florist what their capabilities and recommendations are. And ask to view their wedding portfolio. Bridal bouquets are as varied as the brides who carry them. To help with your decision making, browse bridal magazines, taking particular note of the bouquets held by different brides wearing different styles of outfit. Also note what the bridesmaids are carrying and the types of arrangements on the tables at the reception.

The Whole Cake L

and Caboodle

isa from The Whole Cake and Caboodle has added that sweet touch to a multitude of Northland weddings and events over the last 10 years, specialising in bespoke cake creations. A cake is a very personal decorative element that adds so much to any wedding, where it sits pride of place on display to be admired by your guests during the day, right up until that special moment when it is cut by the happy couple. Creations can range from single or multi-tiered wedding cakes, smaller cake and cupcake tower combinations, and personalised cookie table favours for your guests. Depending on your requirements, designs can range from the traditional, rustic, abstract, or romantic, through to custom more individual personal designs.

Lisa is happy to discuss your wedding details with you and provide helpful advice on required cake size, correct transportation if delivery isn’t an option, or to assist in a design to complement you and your wedding. As with most items in your wedding plans it comes back to budget, so have an idea of cake costs and take the time to decide what your expectations are. A busy design for a multi-tiered cake with silver or gold leaf, personalised figures and handmade icing flowers may far exceed your budget, but if you are realistic and prepared to reduce detail, or even rethink your budget slightly you will end up with a gorgeous creation at your special event.

The Wedding Cake

While a celebratory cake was traditionally provided as a symbol of fertility, modern cakes have become custom made confections with perfection as their main ingredient. Options are as broad as the imagination!

It could be round, square, stacked up cupcakes, profiteroles, meringue, icecream, sorbet, chocolate, red, yellow, or pink. How about a carrot cake, lemon or banana flavour or something to match your wedding gown? Or perhaps the traditional fruit cake. There are some excellent cake designers in Northland who are only too happy to discuss your ideas and offer samples for the all-important taste test. Most of them will also have an album of photos or a website so you can see a range of their work. Once the culinary masterpiece has been made the artistry of the decoration begins. Whether classical, modern, fun, funky, sculpted, shaped, piled, painted or piped. The

icing can reflect almost any colour scheme or theme. Practical considerations include the number of guests and whether the cake will be served as a dessert. If you are getting married in the height of the Northland summer consider the temperature and choose a cake that will not melt before the end of the reception. You might also consider gluten free, or cater for those with allergies. Traditionally the cake would be cut after the meal, however it is customary now for the bride and groom to take this step before the speeches to allow for the best photographs.

O

nce the formality of the wedding has been decided and the bride has chosen her gown, it’s time for the groom and his attendants to select theirs. Retailers and suit hire companies usually advise the following styles for weddings:

Semi-formal day or evening wedding Three piece dark suit, or a suit with a coloured vest, white or coloured shirt, bow tie. Grey suiting is a lighter choice for summer weddings.

Informal evening wedding Two or three piece suit, vest, shirt of choice and colour coordinated tie.

Special themes

Themed weddings are very popular overseas but require careful planning as outfits may need to be specially

made or booked with a costume hire company.

Casual attire

In New Zealand formal weddings are quite rare and the majority of grooms choose semi-formal or informal styles. However with increasing numbers of weddings at outdoor venues like the beach or in tropical locations, the more casual attire is becoming increasingly acceptable, such as a light weight suit, or trousers with a waistcoat instead of a jacket plus light short and tie. Alternatively, open neck shirts are acceptable, often worn out rather than tucked in. Most suit hire companies offer a range of coordinating apparel for the groom, best man and groomsmen, as well as a good selection of sizes from children to adult. Suit hire companies usually keep up with the latest trends and hiring can ensure the wedding party looks good without the expense of purchasing suits they may not wear again. Hire, buy or borrow, whatever suit style you choose be sure it’s design, fabric and fit will flatter you and that it’s appropriate for the season and the occasion. Ensure it’s cleaned, pressed and tailored for ideal length too!

I DO, I Do, I Do, I Do,I Do… Karen Matich, Polwarth Design

S

o how do you decide on that outfit, probably the most important one you’ll buy since getting married yourself, no matter how many ‘mother of’ experiences you’ve had? Every wedding is such a unique occasion where the needs, expectations and aspirations are dependent on so many variables, it’s a wonder anyone turns up wearing anything at all… …it’s a church wedding and the bridesmaids are wearing navy. I can’t do red because the bride’s mother’s wearing that. I suit blue but I wore that to my son’s wedding. I’d like something that I can wear again… not too mother of the bride-ish…it has to have sleeves though, to cover my fat arms…and a V neckline as I’m too big in the boobs for those high necked things…oh and fitted – my partner likes me in fitted, but it’ll have to be ruched to camouflage the ‘mummy tummy’ and cover my knobbly knees – I hate my knees. I really want something like this picture I found on a Scandinavian website, but they only had it in black in a size 2… anyway, whatever happens, I just have to look fabulous cos my ex and his new bird are going to be there…

For a ‘mother of’ there are no rules apart from those that you or the bride make for yourself. Which is why as fashion experts – we have to have big ears!!!! Ideally most ‘mother ofs’ want to know they look fabulous with no fuss. They want to enjoy that precious hour of pre-wedding pampering with hair and makeup, knowing they can just whip on their outfit, look a million dollars and still find the time to be at the beck and call of everyone else on the day, especially their bride or groom Seasonal weddings are much more dependent on nationality of bride or groom, place of residence or country of origin so as a ‘mother of’ your story is important. Our children and grandchildren are all very international these days, so meeting and tying the knot is often a global event, with the immediate family and friends much more prepared to traipse half way around the world to give their blessing on their special day. To complicate matters, there can often be two ceremonies – an international and a local – with contradictory seasons &/or cultures, resulting in two outfits – a retailers dream or challenge!!! Bigger ears!!! Let’s hope the build up to the wedding isn’t more exciting than the

Memorable

Music

Y

our choice of music for the ceremony will create a lasting impression and great memories. The music should express love and commitment which could mean a live performance of a favourite song or a CD, traditional hymns or for traditionalists a wedding march. If you have chosen a church wedding, options include an organist, string quartet or a solo singer or musician. Your wedding theme could influence your style of music or band – jazz, a DJ or hiring a juke box… After the meal is time for people to relax and start partying so the choice of music should encourage people to get to their feet. For the reception music, if you are hiring a DJ or a band, when your guests RSVP, ask them to name a favourite song and add it to the playlist. You may choose to make your own digital compilation to play during the reception. Early on at the reception you’ll want to talk to people so don’t have it too obtrusive or noisy to begin with. You can party after the meal and first dance. The bride and groom traditionally have the first dance together and the music is always a song that has a special significance for the couple. After the first dance the bride and groom take other partners: the bride with her father, father-in- law, best man and the groom with his mother, mother-in-law and bridesmaids. Then the other guests take to the dance floor.

Photography

top tips

By Dawn Dutton

C

hoosing your wedding photographer or videographer is right up there with choosing Mr Right. To help you make the right decision, top Northland photographer, Dawn Dutton, has some tips to make your wedding day a fabulous one to remember. Lots of brides start by telling me they aren’t photogenic. But my response is always the same; when have you ever been photographed a thousand times in a day, by an experienced professional, while you’re wearing a designer gown with perfect hair and makeup? You are going to look amazing, end of story. But finding the right person to capture that for you is an important

decision and it’s worth considering a few key things before booking a photographer or videographer.

paced wedding day. Ask them to view real clients wedding albums and look at a few photographers albums if possible

1. Fall in love with their work.

3. You get what you pay for.

The best photographer is one whose work gives you an instant emotional reaction. Fall in love with their style in the same way you fall in love with your dress.

2. Look at lots of photos!

Professional photographers and videographers will have a website (not just a Facebook page) and won’t just show you a ‘Greatest Hits’ collection but a full wedding day (preferably at your venue). Make sure the work you are shown comes from real weddings, with all the pressures that come with a fast-

In Northland there is a huge variation in price for wedding photography and video - some charge under a thousand dollars, some over $4,000. Mostly you’re paying for the experience, reputation and skill of the person behind the lens. A top photographer can make a lowbudget wedding look incredible, but an inexperienced one can make even the most lavish one look very disappointing.

4. Seek out word on the street.

Ask friends and other wedding suppliers to recommend a photographer or

23 videographer, or give you feedback on those you are considering. Ask to see their wedding albums

5. Book early

Photographers and videographers are usually the next thing booked after the venue. It’s not uncommon for good ones to be booked more than a year in advance, so make sure you book early. Start looking early. Top professional wedding photographers are in high demand, especially in the height of wedding season (dec-march), and many of the best photographers will be booked up a year in advance.

6. Avoid hiring friends or family

with all the lighting situations that you will face on your wedding day. Will they be willing to spend all day working and not participating as a guest, and do they have the ability to edit and present your images beautifully.

It may be tempting to get a family/ friend to do your photos, because they are “good” with a camera, and wont charge you much, just consider if they have the technical knowledge to deal

The The

T

his is the perfect way to gather together after the Big Day, and to catch up properly with your loved ones who have traveled far to celebrate with you both.

Relax, eat, sunbathe, kayak and swim in the middle of a Marine Reserve, masks and snorkels provided. Kayaking, Stand-up paddle boarding, laughter and relaxed fun together after the stress of the wedding has left, and you are bathed in the love of your friends and family. Washed by warm currents sweeping down from the Coral Sea, the Poor Knights Islands are ever present on the horizon of most of the North East coast of Northland, and the easiest harbour by which to access them is Tutukaka. Although the trip will only take a little over 35 minutes, it is a world away as you venture out to this “Middle Earth in the Middle of the Ocean”. The islands are an internationally recognized icon, up for World Heritage Status and have been voted in the Top Ten must-do experiences in New Zealand by New Zealanders, 23kms off the Tutukaka Coast where the island’s 11 million year old volcanic origins provide myriad spectacular drop offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels, all inhabited by an amazing array of underwater life. Bring your photographer, and your wedding dress, stage some amazing shots in a very special place.

Perfect Day After Warren Williams of Williams Photography captures the essence of the scuba-diving and skydiving partnership that is Shayni and Micah Couch - at the magical Poor Knights Islands.

With a dramatic landscape, the passion and spirituality of the place, the stories that link you together are unforgettable.

Canapes

A sophisticated and often cost effective option, a canape/bowl selection is great for a mid or late afternoon cocktail wedding. Ideally cater 5 or 6 different canapes for a 2 hour reception or about 9 canapes for a reception lasting 4 hours. Ensure your guests know it isn’t a full course dinner.

When choosing the menu for your wedding reception, you’ll be factoring in the time of day, guest numbers, the location, the style of the wedding and your budget. Buffet

An ever popular style allowing for a variety of food to be presented for a variety of appetites is the Buffet. Be guided by the caterers as to the number of dishes you will need for the number of guests, who generally help themselves from a long table buffet.

Handy hint: To avoid crowding the buffet table (at smaller venues), try a “floating buffet where large platters are brought to seated guests who serve themselves.

The Reception

Venue

A large portion of your budget will be allocated to your reception so the choice of venue needs careful thought. You’ll have an idea of your theme by now, which should guide your decision on the reception venue.

hink about the closeness of the reception venue to the ceremony (they may be the same place of course), the time of day, type of food and entertain you would like. Would you like a formal sit down meal with table service or a buffet which might be less expensive or will you hire caterers? The Bay of Plenty is fortunate to have a great section of hotels, restaurants, lodges and historic homesteads, function centres, gardens, orchards, clubs, halls for hire and marquee hire. When you visit your shortlisted reception venues check what is included in the price per head. The functions team will provide you advice on how much alcohol to order per head for toasts, during your meal, etc. If you’re on a tight budget ask if you are able to take your own alcohol. Decide on whether there will be a cash bar and make the arrangements clear to your guests in the invitation to save embarrassment. It is normal practice to provide beer and wine, but drinks such as spirits can be expensive. If you are hiring a marquee you may need to factor in hire of wedding furniture, crockery, glassware, table linen, toilets,

lighting, heating, flooring, tables and chairs. There are local hire companies offering everything from vases to chair covers, candelabras and more. If it’s a large wedding with a formal meal you’ll need a seating plan. Traditionally the bride and groom and close family sit at the top table. Try and group people on tables according to whether they are friends or relatives and take into account any family feuds. You don’t want to waste much time having people find their seats so you could number the tables or give them names somehow related to your theme. Post a plan at the entrance to the reception so guests can check where they are sitting beforehand and use personal name tags to help your guests find their seats.

Reception Venue check list

When searching for your wedding venue, there are essential questions to be answered: ! Is the date available that you require? ! What’s the décor like? ! Does it fit your wedding style? ! Will you have to spend a lot of money on flowers and decorations to make it beautiful?

29 9 ! Is there an in-house caterer and do you like that type of food? ! Is there a limit to which caterer you can use? ! Are there adequate bathroom facilities? ! Is there a liquor licence and will you be allowed to bring your own? ! What’s the cancellation policy? ! Is there a payment schedule? ! What deposit is required to hold the booking? ! Are there any hidden costs? ! Before you sign the contract, read it carefully (read the fine print). What the overtime charges?

! Is there a room for a band and/or dancing? ! Does the venue have a sound system? ! Where will you take photographs? ! Who will be supervising and troubleshooting on the day of your wedding? ! Is there accommodation nearby for guests

Reception Seating Plan

Creating a reception seating plan is reputedly one of the hardest tasks. Once you have confirmed your guest list and looked at the venue’s floor plan arrangements, it’s time to consider who will sit where and with whom!

Essentially it’s a giant jigsaw puzzle so to make it easy to move names, places and table locations, buy yourself a cheap whiteboard or a piece of cardboard and sticky post-it notes of guests names. Depending on the size and shape of the reception venue, you will want to maximise space with the shape of your tables. Ensure there is sufficient room for a head table, guest tables, buffet, dance floor, cake display, gift table and photo booth if you are having one. You will also need adequate space between tables for guests to move to the dance floor and for table staff to serve and clear away plates. Visit your venue with the guest list and discuss the layout with the Manager or wedding event coordinator. Their experience is invaluable; they know the venue and which table formations work best for the numbers you have invited. Long tables of 12-20 guests work well for informal weddings and arranged in parallel, can maximise the space of a smaller venue. Rectangular tables seating 8-12 guests also work well in a smaller venue for both formal and informal weddings. Round tables are popular because they create a sense of intimacy with just 6-10 guests. While more traditional, round tables also take up the most space and some guests will have their backs to the bridal table

Table

Decorations C

ompleting the “Wedding of your dreams” is to ensure your wedding table decorations have the WOW factor! It is probably one of the last things that you are thinking about as you are rushing around booking venues, buying your dress, hiring suits, organising the bridesmaids and groomsmen, etc. However dressing your table completes the theme for your wedding. White linen still holds strongly on the dressing the table front, there is nothing like crisp white linen. It is also carried through with white chair covers adorned with a beautiful coloured sashes, that match the colour theme of your wedding. Centre-pieces, vases and candelabra’s make a beautiful setting for any wedding table. Organza and strings of crystals are also very popular, especially on the main bridal table. The crystals

will twinkle and draw the attention to the head table. The most important part is to be consistent with your theme and style of Wedding – for example if you are having a beach styled wedding, you may wish to add a little more of a nautical feel. If you are going with the vintage look, vases of flowers will complement your look, as will the candelabra’s. If you are going for a bold dramatic look, then follow this theme through in your table pieces. It is also nice to finish off your look with a small token of thanks to your guests. A little thank you note next to the guests name cards is a special touch and shows a sign of appreciation to the guests for them attending your special day. Another way to show your appreciation is by having little heart shaped chocolates, a little gift box – or something small that represents your special day!

Wedding Vows

33

Your marriage vows are a time to express your love for each other in front of family and friends.

Y

our vows are an important part of the wedding ceremony and the memory of them should be with you throughout your married life together. Your vows are the key promises that are the foundation of a happy marriage. Chat with the marriage celebrant to check out the requirements as far as vows are concerned. Legally there could be a couple of important words that need to be included in the ceremony and your marriage celebrant will be happy to advise you. If you decide to write your own vows it can be difficult to get started but bear in mind they should be simple but meaningful. Discuss and agree with your partner whether you’ll both say the same words or each write individual vows. You should agree on the general tone such as romantic or light hearted.

If you are stuck for words write from the heart. Think about what you love most about your fiancé, what are his special qualities, why do you love him and what does marriage mean to you? You might recall a special memory you share or talk about when you first fell in love. Your vows shouldn’t be too long. Write a draft, read it aloud to friends and adjust until the words express exactly what you want to say.

theme for your wedding celebrations will set the foundations for your planning and make that perfect day of yours more memorable for you and your guests. The sky is the limit as far as a theme goes and you probably have numerous ideas already. The most important consideration is that whatever you choose suits you both and is within your budget. Another way to create a theme is to focus on a joint interest such as a sport, horses, scuba diving or cycling. Your theme will dictate the colours you choose for your dresses, the flowers, the grooms outfit, invitations, decorations, transport, and the cake. You could create some drama with bold colours such as black and white or any other favourite colour such as lavender. Popular locally are Art Deco themed weddings complete with authentic

gowns, vintage cars and cocktails. Romantic vintage themed vintage weddings offer plenty of scope for the imagination. Select an exquisite dress or design from a previous era and artfully mix with contemporary accessories. The vintage theme can be all inclusive with flowers from the era, table settings including china and cutlery to match your selected era. Your venue could also be a key to choosing a theme. A beach wedding might call for a casual style of dress with a seashell theme, maybe even tropical flowers followed by cocktails and a seafood barbecue. A wedding set in an orchard or vineyard could suggest a rustic theme with boutique wines or cider followed by an interesting photo shoot. A spring wedding might suggest fresh spring flowers such as daffodils or autumn gives scope for hues of latte and peach.

35 Creating a mood board or scrap book is an effective and fun way of visualising how certain colours and textures would look together. You can add pictures of bouquets, centrepieces, dresses, shoes, accessories and cakes. There’s no shortage of web sites offering fresh inspiration from around the world such as Pinterest. There are also plenty of planning tools on line covering budgets, checklists and much more.
