THE BRAND LEADING BY EXAMPLE IN THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT THEM

If you have any form of moral compass then I would be right in assuming that the climate crisis is something you’re concerned about. With so many fashion brands out there claiming to be environmentally sustainable it can be overwhelming to work out which brands are just being performative with their missions of being environmentally conscious and which ones are genuine. So, who can we really trust? Well, look no further than Patagonia.

Founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, a rock climber who turned his passion for the outdoors and the environment into one of the worlds most successful clothing brands to date, has given the entire company to a uniquely structured trust and non-profit, designed to pump all of the company’s profits into saving the planet. Many have been quick to critique the move as strategic and for sales but with not much research its obvious that Chouniards intentions are with genuine concern to help tackle the climate crisis.

As a result of this move, Mr Chouinard said profits to be donated to climate causes will amount to around $100 million (£87m) a year, depending on company sales. So If your looking for good quality functional clothes that don’t cost the earth, then Patagonia is for you.

The Patagonia editorial featured in this issue shows a streetwear take on the functional clothing brand. Demonstrating Patagonia’s ability to provide for both comfort and style.

RAVE CULTURE: THE HYDE PARK HOUSE PARTY

Even if you’re not a student in Leeds, there’s no doubt that you are aware of the infamous house parties that are hosted in Hyde Park, one of Leeds most popular student area’s. Usually set in the basement of a traditional red brick Yorkshire building, students take house parties very seriously here- never without a DJ or professional sound system.

Student rave culture in Leeds promotes a strong sense of community among party goers. The shared love for genres of music such as drum and bass and techno combined with the immersive experience of raving brings people together, creating connections among students from various backgrounds.

Fashion also plays a significant role in student rave culture in Leeds. Students often choosing to express their individuality through their clothing, embracing bold and unique styles. Oversized clothing and vintage pieces are common fashion choices amongst the party scene. Over my time at university I have been bringing round my film camera in the aim to capture moments from the rave culture and party scene that Leeds is best known for. Using the instagram account @nothernfilmarchive I have started to document some of the raves and events that I have been to.

THE RISE OF FUNCTIONAL FASHION

A TREND ANALYSIS

Functional fashion has gained significant popularity among young people in recent years with brands such as Arcteryx, Montbell and North Face all trending on social media. Phrases such as ‘Gorpcore’ have also crept up, invented to describe the wave of young people wearing Gortex clothing, usually associated with the streetwear community. Functional fashion has come about due to the rise in demand for practical yet stylish clothing as hobbies such as hiking and bouldering have become “trendy” for young people to get involved in.

Here are some of the main reasons behind the rise of functional fashion among young people:

Active lifestyles: We now know more than ever before how important it is to stay active in order to maintain good mental health. A rise in young people getting outside and active is one of the main reaosns for the rise of functional fashion.

Technological Innovations: The integration of technology into fashion has contributed to the rise of functional fashion. Innovative materials and fabrics with properties such as UV protection and temperature regulation have become sought after.

Emphasis on Comfort: Comfort has become increasingly important for many young people. The shift away from restrictive and uncomfortable clothing has led to a demand for functional pieces that prioritize comfort without sacrificing style.

A COMMERCIAL FOR MONTBELL “GET OUTSIDE”

In the advert two friends are seen driving from their student house to the forrest in which they get outside and have fun. This light hearted video aims to market the Montbell ‘Superior Down Parka Jacket’, showing off the colourways brown and black. Also aiming to illustarte just how important it is to stay active for our mood and wellbeing.

REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ALL BE SHOPPING SECOND HAND

OTHER THAN JUST “ITS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMNET”

Pictured: Lizz Sweeney styled fully in second hand clothing. Shot by Carly Johnson.

Affordability: Second hand items are usually significantly cheaper than buying brand new, so no need to go into the student overdraft for a new outfit!

Unique and Vintage Finds: Buying second hand offers a treasure trove of unique and one-of-a-kind items. Charity and Vintage shops often carry retro pieces that you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else, meaning you’ll never match outfits with someone

Quality and Durability: Second hand items are often much better quality as they were manufactured in the past to a higher standard than fast fashion products are today

Expressing Personal Style: Buying second hand allows you to experiment with your style and create unique fashion statements

Your money is often going to a good cause: Buying from a charity shop means your money is going towards a social or environmental cause
