WARM & WELCOMING APRIL DEFALCO, a non-traditional social work student, didn’t really know what to expect when she transferred to NKU from Gateway Community and Technical College (GCTC) last fall. “I’ll admit I was nervous about attending a university for the first time,” she says. “I’m older than most college students, or at least I thought I was. I thought because of the age difference that I would be an outcast, but that’s definitely not what happened. NKU has a diverse group of students and helpful staff who are very welcoming.” April says the process of transferring her credits and signing up for classes was “truly the best experience.” Mostly though, she was impressed by the faculty and the sense of community on campus.

APRIL DEFALCO (‘18) Major: Social Work Hometown: Falmouth, Kentucky

“All of my professors have been outstanding and inspiring. They care about their students,” she says. “But the spirit and unity of NKU is what really stands out to me. The friendships and connections made here will last a lifetime.” Although April currently sits on the Falmouth City Council and volunteers with the homeless in Pendleton County, she hopes to become more involved with the community through NKU’s social work program. She says she has NKU to thank for helping her follow her dream of entering the mental health and substance abuse field after graduation. “NKU has tons of resources to help you achieve your educational goals and ways to make connections to build your NKU family,” she says. “You will never be alone in the struggle because someone at NKU is always there to lend a helping hand.” 5
