MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD “Over my dead body!” That was my first thought when the prospect of replacing the name “American Folklore Theatre” was brought up for discussion at our 2007 long-range planning meeting. I love American Folklore Theatre just the way it is! Why would we change the name that we hold near and dear? Answer: To ensure continuing, long-term success. This is the primary responsibility of our Board of Directors and management. To carry out this responsibility, we need to look at the big picture and think into the future. So, after hours, months and years of considering, debating, researching and seeking input, we all came to realize that changing the name makes good strategic sense for several major reasons. Broaden our appeal to new audience members. Yes, we have thousands of devoted fans who are attached to the name “American Folklore Theatre” and we’re extremely thankful for them. But, with an eye to the future, we know we must continually add newcomers. To expand our audience, we need to broaden our appeal. Attract talented writers, composers and performers. Original….musical comedies…delighting audiences of all ages… celebrating the culture and heritage of the United States… This is our time-tested formula for success and we’re sticking to it! But it takes tremendous effort from our artistic teams. To keep the pipeline of new shows continually filled, we need to make it clear that our theater is worthy of top, professional creative talent.
Evoke the magical experience of our one-of-a-kind theater. It took me, and many others, quite some time to come to grips with the idea of changing the name. Now that we’ve selected our new name, Northern Sky Theater, we’re all very excited about it! It really feels right. It evokes that magical feeling we all experience during our summer shows…under the stars, beneath the northern sky. Or, during our extended season, that delightful feel after a show as we head home in the autumnal Door County night. LISA SCHLENKER Scenic Designer Lisa is delighted to return to AFT and join the wonderful Strings Attached creative team for this charming project! Most often found splitting time between the Properties shop at Skylight Music Theatre, and the Wisconsin Humane Society wildlife department bat rehabilitation center, she is an Augustana College alumna in music and theatre, and a 1988 graduate of the MFA program in Theatre Technology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Lisa is also proudly affiliated with SPAM: not the meat, but rather the national prop professional organization The Society for Prop Artists & Managers. Lisa’s design work has been seen on the stages of Theatre X, African American Children’s Theater, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Shakespeare Company, Milwaukee Chamber Theater, Milwaukee Rep’s Stackner Cabaret, and the Skylight Music Theatre. MOLLY JISA Intern / Understudy / Performer Molly Jisa is thrilled to be spending her summer as an intern for AFT. Although a Wisconsinite by birth, Molly currently resides in Phoenix, AZ, and is studying at Scottsdale Community College for her AAFA. Previous theatre credits include: Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors, Sarah Brown from Guys and Dolls, and Shulie from Schoolhouse Rock Live! (“Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical Nominee,” NYA Awards 2013). Molly was honored to have been selected by a panel of music faculty to sing as the solo vocalist for the SCC Music Showcase last February. Glory to God - Psalm 63:3.
HANNAH KLAPPERICH-MUELLER Intern / Understudy Hannah is excited to be spending the summer with AFT. A junior at Marquette University, studying Theatre Arts and Writing-Intensive English, she has worked as both props and assistant costume designer for several main stage productions. She has been seen recently in Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s Lend Me a Tenor, and on the Helfaer Theatre stage in Almost, Maine, A Dollhouse, and the collaboration with First Stage’s Young Company production of Gathering Blue. Volunteers of American Folklore Theatre Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “YES”, then we have the perfect opportunity for you! AFT offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – in addition to ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, there are opportunities to help with poster and rack card distribution, assisting with bulk mailings, preparing the amphitheater in Peninsula State Park so it is ready for the summer season, and assisting with the many special events that AFT has planned for this summer. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone.
