WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER Beneath the Northern Sky The change is official and it feels good! We are now under the banner of Northern Sky Theater after a successful year of transitioning. While this is undeniably momentous in terms of branding, what we hope you will notice more than anything is how our mission is still beautifully intact. We are already feeling the positive effects of the new name within our professional theater community, which means we will be able to network more effectively and make sure that more and more people will have the opportunity to discover us and give the work we do an ever-wider audience. This summer, we have “doubled down” and for the first time are bringing two new book musicals to the summer stage: No Bones About It and When Butter Churns to Gold. Doubling the amount of preparation for premiering two new shows at once is no small undertaking. We spent the fall, winter, and spring steeped in rewrites, readings, workshops, and design meetings. We had writers and composers convening in Wisconsin from Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago, all working together to make this season happen. We’ve renewed our ongoing commitment to making your Northern Sky experience something special. With that in mind, we are also in the process of creating a campus that will integrate the various parts of our operation that are currently spread throughout the county. Having a creative home where we will be able to host readings, rehearsals, and workshops will allow us to be even more focused on what we, and only we, do: create musicals especially written for our Door County audience. That’s you! Thanks for coming and enjoy the show! Jeffrey Herbst Artistic Director Dave Maier Managing Director

WELCOME TO PENINSULA STATE PARK On behalf of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin State Park System, I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park. Every year, Peninsula hosts local, national and international visitors who enjoy the many activities available at this popular state park property. Peninsula State Park is one of the park system’s most complete parks, providing users with a variety of experiences, including camping, hiking, biking, boating and kayaking. The park also has a championship 18-hole golf course, a new 6-hole par-3 short course, historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and Nicolet Beach Concessions, which always provides exceptional service. This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our partner, Northern Sky Theater. This year, campers and park visitors can look forward to bringing their friends and families to two new performances, No Bones About It and When Butter Churns to Gold. Guests can also enjoy the familiar favorite of Strings Attached. I expect you will be amazed at the many natural wonders that are around every corner. As we raise the curtain on the 2015 season, remember to explore, enjoy and be a part of park traditions at Northern Sky Theater. Enjoy the show! Kelli Bruns Superintendent Peninsula State Park

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD Welcome to the 2015 Northern Sky Theater season. An auspicious milestone.

Our 25th.

In her book Nonprofit Lifecycles, Susan Kenny Stevens discusses what she says are the lifecycle stages of nonprofit organizations: idea, start-up, growth, maturity. Mature – that’s us. This is a stage that all nonprofits aspire to. But – and here is the caveat – as good as it is to be a mature organization, there are also special challenges at this stage, the biggest of which is to maintain vitality so as not to slip into decline. I am delighted to say we intend to remain a progressive, mission-driven company. In fact, we’re just getting warmed up. To that end we have: • Implemented our long-range-planning goal of renaming our organization to help ensure continuing, long-term success • Developed not one but two original book musicals this summer, something we have never done before • Hired Molly Rhode as Associate Artistic Director and added Katie Dahl to our Board of Directors, thus starting to develop our next generation of leadership • Started planning for our own creative and administrative center We are keenly aware of the trust and confidence you have in us as a source of family-friendly entertainment presented in a beautiful setting, making for a magical one-of-kind theatrical experience, and our plan is to continue to perform at peak program and organizational levels as well as to maintain exemplary community connection and perception. DOC HEIDE Artistic Advisor / Co-Founder / Playwright Doc first stepped onto the Peninsula State Park stage in 1973’s Come All Ye Bold Fellers, singing songs of the Wisconsin lumberjacks with the UWGB Heritage Ensemble. He’s been back virtually every summer since. Doc is co-author of 20 shows including Belgians in Heaven and Packer Fans from Outer Space (both with Lee Becker and James Kaplan), and Guys & Does (with Lee Becker and Paul Libman). This spring, Doc and Lee wrote a second draft of their forthcoming Belgians prequel, tentatively titled Belgians Go Bowling. They also teach improvisation at the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Door County Summer Institute. Doc has released three CD’s and is now recording one in which golden-throated friends sing his songs. He’s also associate editor of the APA journal PsycCRITIQUES (formerly The APA Review of Books) and an awardwinning faculty member at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco. This spring he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor, yet another straw on the sagging camelback of American higher education.

DAVID HUDSON Playwright / Lyricist Dave (Writers Guild of America, ASCAP) has been writing plays since he was in high school. He teaches playwriting and lyric writing in Chicago at the Actors Garden and Chicago Dramatists. No Bones About It marks his 24th musical (his 22nd in 10 years). Other shows written for Northern Sky include Strings Attached, Muskie Love, A Cabin with a View, Main-Travelled Roads, and Bing! The Cherry Musical. This year he has completed his seventh camp musical for the Actors Garden in Oak Park, Illinois – Tut, Tut! a mix of The Prince and the Pauper and the historical King Tut. With Paul Libman, Dave is a two-time winner of The Richard Rodgers Award. He is lucky and blessed to have three amazing kids, Connor, Garen, and Paige. His considers himself so fortunate to have an amazing wife, Gigi, who loves musicals more than he does.

PAUL LIBMAN Composer Musical theatre is Paul Libman’s destination on a journey that began with playing jazz piano, composing for television and radio commercials and producing records. After winning the Richard Rodgers Award twice for two different musicals with collaborator Dave Hudson, Paul relocated to New York, where he currently is a member of the Lehman Engel BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. He is also the creator, arranger and producer of the hit comedy CD, Oy To The World! A Klezmer Christmas. Now, having had seven successfully produced musicals, he continues to write with Dave Hudson and others. This year, Paul is especially excited about his and Dave’s “double premiere”-- the premiere of No Bones About It and the premiere season of Northern Sky Theater.

A Note from the Authors of No Bones About It Book & Lyrics by Dave Hudson Music by Paul Libman “Why adapt?” is the perennial question when it comes to writing musicals. Even in New York (or, perhaps, especially in New York) someone always asks “Why aren’t there more original musicals?” Well, the truth is, musicals are hard. It is quite an adventure to find a story where songs fit and the music helps the plot move forward. If you look at Rodgers and Hammerstein, they only had one flop, Allegro!, and that also happened to be their only musical with a brand new plot. Every other one of their works was an adaptation. The same is true of Shakespeare. Out of his 37 plays, only four seem to be truly original plots that didn’t draw from existing source material. So, when Paul Libman suggested that we try an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set among the world of competitive barbecue, my response was an instant ‘yes’. ‘Two smokehouses’ instantly jumped to mind and that phrase still opens the show. From Much Ado to A Room with a View, to Chekhov, to ancient Roman comedies, one of the greatest challenges as a playwright comes from adapting material into a new story. One of the joys, and challenges, of adaptation is when you reach a point that you must depart from the original source. That certainly happened with No Bones About It when we reached the ending of R&J (as it is frequently called). Spoiler alert, this is Northern Sky Theater; our version of this story ends much more upbeat than the original. We decided to take this story in the direction of fun. Dueling smokehouses, parents who don’t approve, young kids secretly in love. There is an old adage that comedy and tragedy are opposite sides of the same coin. We flipped that coin and decided on the fun side. - Dave Hudson

A Note from the Authors of When Butter Churns to Gold Book by Peter Welkin Music by Ron Barnett Lyrics by Randi Wolfe “You must pay the mortgage!” “But, I can’t pay the mortgage!” Modern mortgage meltdown? No, just a classic plot set-up from a by-gone era of scheming villains trying to ruin the innocent. Welcome to melodrama! The common definition of a melodrama is: a sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions. In the late 1800’s/early 1900’s, melodramas were the TV of the era, serving up everything from frivolous romantic comedies to extremely dark yet socially relevant stories. In order for a classic Melodrama to work, you must have a heroine whose life is put into peril by the onerous villain. And, of course, there must be a hero to save the heroine and overcome the dreadful villain. Add in some melodramatic music to build tension and underscore the plot and we’re off and running. But this ain’t your great-grandparents’ melodrama. It’s built as a classic melodrama, but it’s a parody of the style. Some of the best parodies of melodramatic stories have always been the Dudley Do-Right cartoons from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. The tongue-in-cheek humor was funny and wry, and created a selfaware sensibility to the characters. We wanted to bring that playful “with a wink and a nod” kind of fun to the story. And we wanted it to be rooted in at least some of the realities of living in this region just before Wisconsin became a state in 1847. So, after a year and a half of writing and rewriting, along with plenty of excellent feedback from Jeff, Molly, and the Northern Sky workshop actors, we’ve finally arrived. And we couldn’t be more excited to see how the Northern Sky audiences respond to our orphaned Wisconsin farm girl trying to save the family farm from the treacherous villain, while our strapping hero tries to save her from ruin. We hope you have a blast booing, hissing, and cheering! Thank you, Scott Guy and Elise Dewsberry of New Musicals Inc., and you, Northern Sky, for this awesome opportunity!

A Note from the Authors of Strings Attached Book & Lyrics by Dave Hudson Music & Additional Lyrics by Colin Welford Colin Welford and I couldn’t be more pleased that Strings Attached will be treading the Northern Sky boards once again this summer. We had a great time putting the show together last year and the great thing about the show is we love coming to see it and watch the actors discovering the confusion in a fresh and new way every performance. Since we’ve written it, Colin and I have had many adventures in the world of musical theater. Colin has been the music director and conductor for productions of Billy Elliot from St. Louis to the first national production in Holland, and now most recently he was just down the road from me at Drury Lane in Oak Brook Terrace, just outside of Chicago. It was a privilege to work with one of the most knowledgeable minds in the world of musical theater in creating Strings Attached. I have written it before, but there is a very fun similarity between the lost twins of Strings Attached and the old Abbot and Costello routine Who’s on First. The truth is, the audience is in on the joke, but that’s not the point. The fun of a ‘Who’s on First’ type routine is knowing the confusion, but getting to go on the adventure of seeing the confusion of the performers on stage. One of the favorite stories I heard from the first summer of Strings Attached was of a grandparent watching their grandchildren watching the musical with riveted attention. The kids didn’t necessarily ‘get’ who was who all the time, but they loved watching the confusion and the frustration happening on stage. Here’s hoping that skies are clear and there is no rain at night at Northern Sky Theater this summer so that confusion can rule once again. - Dave Hudson

STEWART DAWSON Head Carpenter Once again, I am astounded beyond any semblance of belief that Northern Sky has asked me back again this summer to be their Resident (albeit, innocent) Bystander. Although this is a talent that I have become very good at over the years, and is an indispensible position, it is always a privilege and an honor to feel personally wanted and needed. Also I’m a blame-free zone. In my copious amounts of spare time, I am developing my writing skills and hope that someday soon you all will be able to say, “Yeah, I read that...” Have a great time tonight and have a wonderful summer!

FALL SEASON September 4 - October 17

Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley | Music by James Kaplan | Story by Fred Alley & James Kaplan

Lumberjacks in Love returns to Northern Sky this fall and makes its debut at the Door Community Auditorium. Lumberjacks in Love is one of Northern Sky’s all-time box office hits and celebrates a world where bath time is once a month and the blast of a dinner bell brings the boys running. Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire Lumber Camp in Northern Wisconsin – until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride interrupts life as they know it. The result is big belly laughs and beautiful music.

A Note from the Author of Lumberjacks in Love Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by James Kaplan Story by Fred Alley & James Kaplan Lumberjacks in Love is a must-see for any Northern Sky/AFT fan. Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire Lumber Camp in Northern Wisconsin – until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride upends life as they know it. The result is big belly laughs and memorable music. Lumberjacks is one of Northern Sky’s all-time box office hits and celebrates a world where bath time is once a month and the blast of a dinner bell brings the boys running. It was 19 years ago that the burly boys from Haywire lumber camp first stomped and romped on the old AFT stage. Since then, the boys have returned to “camp” in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008, and 2011 and still we receive more requests for Lumberjacks in Love than for any other Northern Sky show. – James Kaplan “Bring the kids. Fred’s work has been celebrated throughout the country and in particular at both Madison and Milwaukee Repertory Theatres. The Spitfire Grill, which he wrote with composer James Valcq, earned them the Richard Rodgers Award and has been produced 1998 over 450 times from Off-Broadway to Europe and East Asia. Fred was also an accomplished performer and created many memorable characters, including Moonlight in Lumberjacks in Love, Lloyd in Guys on Ice, and Leo in Belgians in Heaven. Fred’s ability to help us laugh at ourselves, through his characters, makes his shows both entertaining and timeless. Lumberjacks in Love 1996

Northern Sky Theater Donations Experts tell us that running a professional theater that solely creates and produces original musicals priced so the whole family can attend is impossible. We do it anyway. We exist because of you. Individual and foundation gifts account for approximately 20 percent of Northern Sky’s operating budget. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the contributors listed below. Northern Sky Theater is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, so your donation is tax-deductible. Donations from May 1, 2014, through April 30, 2015, are acknowledged in this playbill.

SUMMER RAIN POLICY The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky Theater will not cancel a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If cancelled, and the show is less than half over, you will have the option of a mail-in refund coupon or receiving a rain check ticket, which is good for any future summer performance without expiration. If a show is more than half over when interrupted, patrons will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend, and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
