WELCOME TO PENINSULA STATE PARK On behalf of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin State Park System, I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park. Every year, Peninsula welcomes visitors from all around the world. Our guests enjoy the many activities available at this popular state park property. Peninsula State Park is one of the park system’s most complete parks, providing users with a variety of experiences, including camping, hiking, biking, boating and kayaking. The park also has a championship 18-hole golf course, a new 6-hole par-3 short course, historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and Nicolet Beach Concessions, which always provides exceptional service. This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our partner Northern Sky Theater. This year, campers and park visitors can look forward to bringing their friends and families to a new performance, Doctor! Doctor! Guests can also enjoy the familiar favorite of Lumberjacks in Love. I expect you will be amazed at the many natural wonders that are around every corner. As we raise the curtain on the 2016 season, remember to explore, enjoy and be a part of the Peninsula State Park traditions at Northern Sky Theater. Enjoy the show! Northern Sky Theater
Welcome TO Northern Sky Theater Welcome to another season beneath the northern sky. We trust you have already noticed that instead of our usual three-show summer season, we have four shows to offer you. We had so much fun debuting both No Bones About It and When Butter Churns to Gold last year that we just couldn’t resist bringing them back for a second year. We have also brought back Lumberjacks in Love for its twentieth anniversary. This long-time favorite first debuted in 1996, was then retooled for a Lumberjacks in Love 1996 production at the Milwaukee Rep, and then returned to our stage in 2000. Since then, thousands of people have seen the show both here and around the country. We celebrate its continuing appeal and honor the legacy of Fred Alley, the lyricist and book writer, and co-founder of Northern Sky. You will also see that, true to form, we are upholding the most important element of our mission—debuting new musicals for you—with the world premiere of Doctor! Doctor! This delightful valentine to small-town life in Door County is the creation of Matt Zembrowski, who first attended shows in the park when he was twelve years old. It’s amazing how many people tell us that they attended shows as a child and are now bringing their own children to the theater. Who knows, maybe there’s a twelve-year-old sitting next to you right now who will one day have a show playing on the Northern Sky stage under the stars. It’s happened before! Thanks for coming and enjoy the show!

Message from the Chairperson of the Board It is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome you to another season under the stars at our amphitheater in Peninsula State Park. The partnership between Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula State Park and the Department of Natural Resources began in 1970. This 45-year partnership goes back to our beginnings as the Heritage Ensemble. Since then, our presentations have become wonderful memories for thousands of visitors. Walking the tree-lined path from the parking lot to the theater space surrounded by pines is a unique experience. This beautiful natural setting in which we perform is an integral part of attending a performance at Northern Sky Theater. Over the years we have worked together to enhance your time at the theater when you come to see one of our performances by making improvements to staff and visitor comfort and safety in the space we occupy in this beautiful park, at the same time ensuring that these changes are in harmony with the park’s unique natural surroundings. We cannot imagine ourselves anywhere else. That is why I am delighted to tell you that as I write this we are preparing to sign a new 15-year agreement with the DNR that will ensure this partnership continues to thrive. Securing this long term lease has been a part of our long-range strategic plan, as knowing where we will be performing in the future sets the stage for many of our other long range planning items. Thank you to everyone at the Department of Natural Resources, Peninsula State Park, and Northern Sky Theater who made this happen. A special thanks to Art Harrington and Emily Ertel. Mary Seeberg

A Note from the Author of Doctor! Doctor! Music, Book & Lyrics by
Matt Zembrowski
My family has been camping in Peninsula State Park since before I could walk. I know the Welker’s Point campground better than I do my own neighborhood. One summer evening, when I was 12 years old, my brother Zach and I went to see a performance of “Bone Dance” in the Peninsula Park Amphitheater. My love of theater was born that night, and since then I have dreamed of writing a show for this company. A few summers ago, while I was waiting for a table at Al Johnson’s, I read an article in the Peninsula Pulse about a soon-to-be-retiring “country” physician named Dr. Joan Traver, and my imagination took off. A story suddenly sprang to mind, about a small town that is forced to adjust to the “modern” medicine prescribed by their new doctor after their longtime physician retires. I decided to set the show in the fictional town of Sister Harbor (you can decide for yourself where that is!) in the time just before World War II, when the world was about to change whether people were ready for it or not. I read as many first-hand accounts of Door County at that time as I could find, and couldn’t help but smile as I learned about “Doc” Farmer, who cared for the residents of Door County for almost 40 years. From the very first draft that I wrote (originally titled “Doc Takes A Vacation”) countless people have had a hand in shaping the show. I’d be remiss if I didn’t say thank you to Jeff Herbst for believing in me and allowing this life-long dream of mine to come true; to Mary McLellan, Michael and Pamela Skocir, Leslie Fitzwater and Jim Butchart, Bob Zimmerman, Don Devona, Aaron Klein and the dozens of others who took part in sit-down readings at my apartment in Milwaukee; to Jim Pickering and the Northern Sky workshop cast for breathing life into the residents of Sister Harbor last summer; to my parents, Bill and Liz, for bringing us up here every summer; and most especially to Molly Rhode, who has spent countless hours looking at every detail to make sure we got it right, and to my darling Lori Nappe, who’s done more to support me and the creation of this show than I could ever hope to express.

A Note from the Authors of No Bones About It Book & Lyrics by Dave Hudson Music by Paul Libman When you are writing a new piece, a big thing you want to find is a good elevator pitch. What’s an elevator pitch, you ask? Well, it goes like this: some day, you might run into a producer or director on the elevator. They are very busy, and this is your one shot to tell them about your show. So, between floor one and floor fifteen, you have their attention. Thirty seconds, if you’re lucky. What you don’t want is to have to describe every single detail of the plot to them. If you do that, the doors will be opening on 15 and you’ll be saying, “and then, the girl meets the boy and…” ding, at which point the producer says, “Well, great to see you. Good luck with that.” What you want to do is be able to pitch them your show in the short time you are on the elevator so when that door opens they say, “Come to my office on Thursday and tell me more about it.” So, when Paul Libman, the composer of No Bones About It said to me, “Romeo and Juliet set in the world of competitive barbecue,” I was sold. Right there, we already had our elevator pitch. To this day, all I need to do is say that exact phrase and the person I’m telling it to has a smile on their face, or even laughs. Mind you, I haven’t run into any big time producers in the elevator, but when I do, I’ll be ready. That aside, we have great hopes that No Bones About It will eventually have many other productions for that exact reason, the idea behind it is easy and funny. We’re proud of the show, certainly, but having such a great elevator pitch makes it easy to get someone to take a first look. Once they do, we’re confident that some of the people who are sold by the elevator pitch will end up liking it and No Bones About It will eventually find a home on many other stages across the country. Closer to home, we hope that you enjoy the show this evening. No Bones About It was a joy to create with Pam Kriger and the wonderful actors and creative staff at Northern Sky. - Dave Hudson

Northern Sky Theater
A Note from the Authors of When Butter Churns to Gold Book by Peter Welkin Music by Ron Barnett Lyrics by Randi Wolfe We’re so grateful to Northern Sky Theater for bringing our musical melodrama back for a second season! What’s a melodrama you ask? The common definition of a melodrama is: a sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions. In the late 1800’s/early 1900’s, melodramas were the TV of the era, serving up everything from frivolous romantic comedies to extremely dark yet socially relevant dramas. In order for a classic melodrama to work, you must have a heroine whose life is put into peril by the onerous villain. And, of course, there must be a hero to save the heroine and bring the villain to justice. Add in some melodramatic music to build tension, underscore the plot points, and we’re off and running. But this ain’t your greatgrandparents’ melodrama. It’s based on a classic melodramatic style, but it’s a parody AND a musical! Some of the best parodies of melodramatic stories have always been the Dudley Do-Right cartoons from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. The tongue-in-cheek humor created a self-aware sensibility to the characters. We wanted to bring that playful “with a wink and a nod” kind of fun to the story. And we wanted it to be rooted in at least some of the realities of living in Wisconsin just before it became a state in 1847. We hope you have a blast booing the treacherous villain and cheering our strapping hero as he tries to save our orphaned heroine’s farm from ruin! Thank you, Scott Guy and Elise Dewsberry of New Musicals Inc., and you, Northern Sky, for this awesome opportunity! - Peter Welkin

A Note from the Author of Lumberjacks in Love Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by James Kaplan Story by Fred Alley & James Kaplan Lumberjacks in Love is a must-see for any Northern Sky/AFT fan. Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire lumber camp in Northern Wisconsin – until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride upends life as they know it. The result is big belly laughs and memorable music. Lumberjacks is one of Northern Sky’s all-time box office hits and celebrates a world where bath time is once a month and the blast of a dinner bell brings the boys running. It was 20 years ago that the burly boys from Haywire lumber camp first stomped and romped on the old AFT stage. Since then, the boys have returned to “camp” in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2015, and still we receive more requests for Lumberjacks in Love than for any other Northern Sky show. – James Kaplan

STEWART DAWSON Head Carpenter Once again, I am astounded beyond any semblance of belief that Northern Sky has asked me back again this summer to be their Resident (albeit, innocent) Bystander. Although this is a talent that I have become very good at over the years, and is an indispensible position, it is always a privilege and an honor to feel personally wanted and needed. Also, I’m a blame-free zone. In my copious amounts of spare time, I am developing my writing skills and hope that someday soon you all will be able to say, “Yeah, I read that...” Have a great time tonight and have a wonderful summer!

Book & Lyrics by
Frederick Heide & Lee Becker Music by Paul Libman
Created by David Peterson Additional Materials by
Fred Alley & Jeffrey Herbst
The musical that promises more bang for your buck! Guys & Does is a wacky excursion into the world of deer-hunting.
And If Elected is a musical romp through that mud-slinging, muckraking, national pastime, the Presidential Election.

David Carl Peterson Nov. 7, 1935 – Oct. 8, 2014
Wisconsin’s Musical Historian and The “Godfather” of Northern Sky Theater In 2015, we celebrated the extraordinary life of Dave Peterson. Members of the Heritage Ensemble, AFT, and Northern Sky presented a concert of stories and song generously hosted by Dave’s wife, Joan, and long-time family friend, Amy Chaffee. The proceeds of this event supported our ongoing internship program at Northern Sky. Gifts made in memory of Dave will continue to support our intern program fostering opportunities for young people to gain first-hand experience with a renowned regional theater. Simply dedicate your donation “in memory of Dave Peterson.”

Northern Sky Theater Donations Experts tell us that running a professional theater that solely creates and produces original musicals priced so the whole family can attend is impossible. We do it anyway. We exist because of you. Individual and foundation gifts account for approximately 20 percent of Northern Sky’s operating budget. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the contributors listed below. Northern Sky Theater is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, so your donation is tax-deductible. Donations from May 1, 2015, through April 30, 2016, are acknowledged in this playbill.

Summer Rain Policy The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky Theater will not cancel a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If cancelled, and the show is less than half over, you will have the option of a mail-in refund coupon or receiving a rain check ticket, which is good for any future summer performance without expiration. If a show is more than half over when interrupted, patrons will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend, and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
