Every year, Peninsula welcomes visitors from all around the world. Our guests enjoy the many activities available at this popular state park property. Peninsula State Park is one of the park system’s most complete parks, providing users with a variety of experiences, including camping, hiking, biking, boating and kayaking. The park also has a championship 18-hole golf course, a new 6-hole par-3 short course, historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and Nicolet Beach Concessions, which always provides exceptional service. This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our partner Northern Sky Theater. This year, campers and park visitors can look forward to bringing their friends and families to a new performance, Oklahoma in Wisconsin. Northern Sky Theater

WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER Welcome to another season beneath the northern sky. Within this playbill you will find a trove of information. You’ll see that we have four shows running all summer long, one of which, Oklahoma in Wisconsin, is yet another world premiere. We are presenting Victory Farm for only the second time on our summer stage since its debut in 2012. Doctor! Doctor! is back after entertaining audiences last summer. And the ever-loveable Lumberjacks in Love will play one night a week to round out the summer season. You will also notice that we are premiering another new musical, Naked Radio, this fall at the Door Community Auditorium. We are now in our ninth year at the DCA, which has provided us with a comfortable fall theater, allowing us to extend our season and move indoors on Labor Day weekend. As if a season with two world premieres isn’t challenging enough, what you will also see is that we have been in the planning stages for a new creative campus to be built on 40 acres of land at the corner of County Roads A and F. The park will always be our summer home, but all other areas of our operation will be consolidated on this campus, finally giving us a home base where we’ll have our administrative offices, storage, scene and costumes shops, and a beautiful new theater that will be used for rehearsals, non-summer performances, special events and new programming opportunities. We will also be improving your park experience with new bathrooms, concession stands, and improved sound and lighting. The new creative campus will ensure that we can bring you exciting, original shows for years to come. Please take a moment to look over the material in the playbill. Ask questions, give us your feedback, and please consider making a donation to our Constellation Capital Campaign. (See page 37.) All in all, it’s an incredibly exciting time to be a part of Northern Sky. Thanks for coming and enjoy the show! Jeffrey Herbst Artistic Director

A Note from the Authors of Oklahoma in Wisconsin Book & Lyrics by Richard Castle Music by Matthew Levine In 1954, Hollywood was ready to film a glorious widescreen movie version of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical Oklahoma! In order to best capture the Technicolor splendor of the bright golden haze on the meadow, the corn as high as an elephant’s eye, and the waving wheat as the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain, the studio wanted to film Oklahoma! on location. But there was one problem: the state of Oklahoma had so many oil wells dotting the landscape, it was impossible to shoot the idyllic landscapes the story required. Hollywood would need to find a stand-in for Oklahoma. Location scouts quickly fanned out across the country searching for a brand new state to treat them great; where the farmer and the cowman could be friends; and where honey lambs could sit and talk, and watch a hawk makin’ lazy circles in the sky. Oklahoma in Wisconsin imagines that one of those location scouts made his way from Hollywood up to Door County, Wisconsin, and fell in love. An homage to the musicals of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Oklahoma in Wisconsin is a valentine to musical theater itself, celebrating the wonder and magic of musicals that can happen anywhere: in Hollywood, Wisconsin, or even in your own backyard. As the characters in Oklahoma in Wisconsin will soon discover, putting on a show requires plenty of collaboration. Oklahoma in Wisconsin would not exist without the help of the superbly talented and supportive folks at New Musicals Inc. and Northern Sky Theater. It would also not exist without an audience, and Matthew Levine and I are so very grateful for the opportunity to share our labor of love with you tonight. Part of the fun of seeing Oklahoma in Wisconsin is catching the references to Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King & I and even The Sound of Music. But most of all, I hope you will enjoy the show while sitting beneath the stars, as the magic of musical theater fills the night with song. – Richard Castle

KELLY DOHERTY Performer / Assistant Director Kelly is happy to be returning for another summer at Northern Sky Theater. Since graduating with a BFA from UW-Whitewater, Kelly has become a familiar face to Milwaukee audiences. Favorite roles include Bodey (A Lovely Sunday for Creve Couer, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre), Odysseus (The Penelopiad, Luminous Theatre), and to her knowledge has never been an ingenue. Most recently she appeared in Milwaukee Opera Theatre’s production of The Mikado as Pish Tush and as Maria and Homer in Luminous Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of Mr. Burns; a post-electric play. When not onstage, Kelly enjoys watching made-for-TV romantic comedies, drinking fine whiskey while not wearing pants, and singing to her cat.

DOUG MANCHESKI Performer Doug is a veteran of many years at Northern Sky Theater. His favorite shows with the company include When Butter Churns to Gold, Windjammers, The Bachelors, Guys on Ice, Fool Me Once, Fishing for the Moon and Muskie Love. He has performed with most major theaters in Wisconsin and just recently wrapped up a run of True West at Third Avenue Playhouse. He is perhaps best known for Marvin in Guys on Ice, a show regularly seen on Wisconsin Public Television and to be performed live this December at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison. He is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Keep the faith.

A Note from the Author of Doctor! Doctor! Music, Book & Lyrics by

Matt Zembrowski

I had been checking the weather on my phone every ten minutes or so that whole day. “No!! It says there’s a 60% chance now!” ... “Oh, now it’s only 40%.” ... “Now it’s 70%!” ... And so on. We got to the park about 45 minutes before show time, and despite the annoying drizzle, the Northern Sky faithful were filing in to see the first performance of this new show about a Doctor. It was ten minutes to show time and there was just enough green on the radar to cause concern. So this lifelong AFT fan looked up at the sky and said: “Fred, if you have any say up there, would you please tell them to hold off for an hour and a half?!” Management decided to delay the start of the show for a few minutes as we dried off the stage. Jeff did a little softshoe to entertain the crowd. We used every towel we could find. By the time we were done, the drizzle had stopped. I took my (wet) seat next between my soon-to-be wife Lori, and the indefatigable Molly Rhode, and waited. And waited. We were five minutes into the show, and nobody was laughing. How could this be? We all thought it was funny! We were sunk, I could feel it. A Dream Come True reduced to a soggy nightmare. Then Doug said something that made them laugh. Then they laughed some more, and they clapped, and they cried. The cast took their bows and retreated to the dressing rooms. The crew sprinted out to take down the scenery, and a minute later it poured its brains out. But the rain had held off for an hour and a half, and we got the show in. (Thanks, Fred!) There’s no way to prepare yourself for the emotional roller coaster that is the opening night of your first show. Twenty years of anticipation, two years of work, four weeks of rehearsal, and then there it is. To quote Mel Brooks: “Will it flop, or will it go?” And then to see it go, and go, and go, and then come back for another season... There are no words. (The paragraphs above not withstanding.) Thanks to everyone at Northern Sky for making this all possible, and to Lori for holding my hand through it all. It’s been a true joy, and I can’t wait for the next one. (In the meantime, you should go to the concession stand and buy a copy of our Original Cast Album!)

“Room enough to grow beneath the northern sky…”

From Northern Lights, lyrics by Fred Alley

Northern Sky Theater had its

beginnings in 1970, when a small troupe of talented college students, the Heritage Ensemble, began performing folk revues for an audience of mostly campers in Peninsula State Park. Over the decades, a dedicated group of artists with Wisconsin roots transformed the company into a regionally acclaimed, professional theater, remarkable for its commitment to developing and performing its own material. Today, our ongoing mission of creating original shows has given us a unique identity with a history of over 50 world premieres. Over 40,000 people attend the theater annually, giving us a remarkably loyal following.

38

Northern Sky Theater

We are now ready to take a bold new step, building a creative campus to ensure that our mission will be sustainable well into the future. We invite you to take that step with us.

For each new show we

create, a lot needs to happen indoors, away from the park. Currently, that’s happening at multiple rented facilities all over the county: We have our administrative offices in Ephraim; we build sets and store costumes in a barn near Baileys Harbor; we store sets and props in Fish Creek; and we rehearse at Birch Creek in Egg Harbor. Birch Creek is the latest of ten different rented rehearsal spaces in the past 25 years. We need to focus on creating new material, but we have no consistently available, appropriate place to meet with a large group to do the necessary work. When we’d like to do a reading or a workshop of a new show and invite you to be a part of it, we sometimes simply cannot find a place to do it. In fact, some of our most critical rental options are disappearing faster than we can replace them, making it difficult to map out long-term plans for developing the new works that are vital to our future.

Rental facilities scattered about the county: • Offices in Ephraim • Shop & costume space in Baileys Harbor • Rehearsal space in Egg Harbor • Storage space in Fish Creek • Fall performance space at Door Community Auditorium and various town halls We spend roughly $80,000 every year in various rental expenses alone.

In order for us to keep creating new works for you, we need a place to call our own. NorthernSkyTheater.com

39

The good news is, ‌we found just the place.

We have acquired 40 acres of The Northern Sky campus will centralize all of our support operations and include Northern Door County’s only professionally equipped, intimate performance space.

40

Northern Sky Theater

land for our creative campus on the corner of highways A and F, with a well-developed site plan already in place. There will be two buildings as part of the campus providing everything we need, in one place, before we make the annual move to the park.

The centerpiece of the

Northern Sky campus will be a professionally equipped, intimate 244-seat theater that will serve as an ideal home for our fall and winter shows. In addition, it will be used for rehearsals, readings, workshops and benefits, making your Northern Sky experience a more integrated one. When you visit our creative campus, you’ll walk into an open lobby with a view of the surrounding woods, where you’ll be able to purchase your tickets, buy a gift item, say hello to the friendly folks in the office, catch a glimpse of rehearsals, and greet the artists as they prepare for upcoming performances.

Our new creative campus will: • Centralize all of our support operations • Increase our efficiency, thus increasing our creative capacity • Enable opportunities to share our creative process • Augment our outreach and program offerings • Facilitate developing new works year-round • Rededicate funds for current rental expenses • Ensure the future and stability of Northern Sky.

This new creative campus will make everything we offer at the park come together more efficiently. All our scattered pre-production resources will be consolidated and completely focused on bringing you more great theater. Most importantly, the park and the new campus will support, sustain, and strengthen each other, our mission, and the future of the theater that you love.

We also plan to make improvements at the park,

enhancing your entire visit when you see a show there. We know that your Northern Sky summer memories are special not only because of the shows that we perform, but also because of the beautiful place where we are privileged to perform them.

The two combined are the heart and soul of Northern Sky Theater. We’ve had a remarkable 47-year partnership with the Wisconsin State Park system and that’s going to continue. In 2016, Northern Sky and the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources renewed this partnership for fifteen years, effectively securing our home in the park for the next generation of theatergoers.

Northern Sky Amphitheater Enhancements • Technical booth rebuild with new center lighting grid

• Additional backstage storage units

• Dressing room renovation & expansion • Sound system improvements

• New public restrooms • Improved seating comfort

• Renovated patron staircase entry area • Parking lot improvements

• New merchandise & concessions facilities • Two new patron shelter areas

Northern Sky Theater

Improving our summer home and building the supportive campus are integral components of the long-range vision of the company. Since building our new stage and adding

dressing rooms and path lighting in 2001, we’ve done everything we can to make further needed improvements. We’ve added small enhancements, like our exit road and fire ring. But many of our interim solutions to various problems have surpassed their life expectancy. With a few strategic tweaks and renovations, we can make some dramatic improvements to the overall Northern Sky experience that will impact the quality of your visit without changing what you love most about our theater under the stars.

Enhancing the Northern Sky Experience • New public restrooms • Improved seating comfort • New merchandise & concessions facilities, including two new patron shelter areas • Technical booth rebuild with new center lighting grid • Sound system upgrade • Dressing room renovation & expansion • Additional backstage storage units • Renovated patron staircase entry area • Parking lot improvements NorthernSkyTheater.com

A Note from the Authors of Victory Farm Book & Lyrics by Emilie Coulson & Katie Dahl Music by James Valcq In the 1940s, Door County residents built their lives around the close ties of their small communities, the bountiful fish in Lake Michigan, and the cherry trees they planted in the peninsula’s rocky soil. When World War II began to rage in Europe, the county’s economic balance was threatened. Between the large number of Americans fighting overseas and nationwide rations on rubber and gasoline (which prevented migrant farm workers from traveling north), Door County faced a labor shortage, especially in harvesting the peninsula’s annual cherry crop. As a result, many Door County cherry growers made an unlikely choice: they signed up for a government program that assigned German prisoners of war to work on farms throughout the United States. All told, about 370,000 German POWs came to the US between 1943 and 1946, including about 2,000 who came to Door County. The U.S. military used a vetting process to ensure that the Germans assigned to American farms were not hard-line Nazis; separate high-security camps were reserved for them. Many of the men who ended up on American farms had been caught up in the war against their will. At most of the farms where they worked, the POWs literally saved the cherry harvest. Even more remarkable, however, were the connections some of these POWs forged with the Americans they met here. Especially in Wisconsin, where German ancestry was prevalent, local farmers often ate the same foods, knew the same songs, or even spoke the same language as the POWs. As an improbable result, many POWs and American farm families found common ground and kinship with one another. More than 70 years later, the United States once again faces a time of fear and division. Many of us find it hard to trust those who look, speak, or vote differently than we do. Perhaps the questions that Door County residents and German POWs asked themselves in the 1940s could be instructive to us now. Who are the strangers among us? Can we find a way to welcome them? And how can we seek to understand them better?

A Note from the Author of Lumberjacks in Love Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by James Kaplan Story by Fred Alley & James Kaplan Lumberjacks in Love is a must-see for any Northern Sky/AFT fan. Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire lumber camp in Northern Wisconsin – until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride upends life as they know it. The result is big belly laughs and memorable music. Lumberjacks is one of Northern Sky’s all-time box office hits and celebrates a world where bath time is once a month and the blast of a dinner bell brings the boys running. It was 21 years ago that the burly boys from Haywire lumber camp first stomped and romped on the old AFT stage. Since then, the boys have returned to “camp” in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2015, and 2016 and still we receive more requests for Lumberjacks in Love than for any other Northern Sky show. – James Kaplan

DAVID HUDSON Playwright / Lyricist Dave Hudson is a lyricist and bookwriter who was born and raised in the West, but now lives in Chicago. In partnership with the Actors Garden, he has written seven musicals for the youth market ranging from Ancient Egypt (Tut, Tut), to the Middle Ages (Good Knight), to a modern sequel to Peter Pan. He is proud and a little bit amazed that Naked Radio marks his eighth musical for Northern Sky (his seventh with Paul Libman). He and Paul are two time winners of the Richard Rodgers Award and the ASCAP Award. Dave is the proud father of three amazingly creative kids, Connor, Garen, and Paige. He specifically dedicates Naked Radio to his amazing wife, Gigi, who has shown him such amazing support and belief through his own ‘silver box’ moments.

PAUL LIBMAN Composer Musical theatre is Paul Libman’s destination on a journey that began with playing jazz piano, composing for television and radio commercials and producing records. After winning the Richard Rodgers Award twice for two different musicals with collaborator Dave Hudson, Paul relocated to New York, where he currently is a member of the Lehman Engel BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. He is also the creator, arranger and producer of the hit comedy CD, Oy to the World! A Klezmer Christmas. Now, having had eight successfully produced musicals, he continues to write with Dave Hudson and others. This year, Paul is especially excited about his and Dave’s new Northern Sky musical, Naked Radio.

A Note from the Authors of Naked Radio Book & Lyrics by Dave Hudson Music by Paul Libman Who do you know in this show? As the bookwriter of Naked Radio, I have to confess that this show has surprised me. It started with an idea: Two guys on the radio joking around and saying they were naked. Because… you know, it’s the radio, and nobody can see them. Funny, right? From there, we built a story around it: get the two guys stuck in a blizzard. Then, Jeff Herbst had marching orders. He wanted this show to be performed by three people, the two DJ characters and a woman playing the third character. Well, there are two parts to a radio station, the station and the community who is listening. We soon realized that the woman in the cast would be playing the entire community. Luckily, we had the very versatile and talented Molly Rhode in place to help us develop this ‘track’ of characters. Now, here’s a secret. I’ve known, or am acquainted with every character in this show. A couple of examples: I worked on the county road crew in college and we did have a guy named Rusty (and he could curse). I worked in a bookstore in college and we had a regular customer who always came in wearing a full Star Trek uniform (not Dr Who, but still). The list goes on, but the point is that I feel like I’ve written people that we all know, and Molly has done a stunning job at bringing them to life. By the same token, even though Chase Stoeger and Scott Wakefield are only playing one character, they have made those characters wonderfully real (while also playing their fingers off). Finally, closer to home, recently I was personally part of a very dehumanizing corporate downsizing where, like Bart, they decided that the actual individuals who had been doing the job no longer mattered. The surprise for me came from the deeply personal things this story brought out of me. Silly, wacky, corny; yes, this is all of that. But this musical has also been a wonderfully personal, heartfelt journey of remembering characters from my past. It has also made me laugh a lot, and has occasionally brought a few tears to my eyes. So, who do you know in this show? I hope that you know at least a few of these characters. Beyond that, I hope that by the end of the show, you are glad that you’ve gotten to know some new folks as well. – Dave Hudson

SCOTT WAKEFIELD Performer Scott happily returns to Door County where many moons ago he performed in Guys on Ice; Lumberjacks in Love; Old Friends; The One That Got Away; Fish and Whistle; and Sometimes a Song. When not at Northern Sky, Scott subsisted on Broadway in It Ain’t Nothin’ but the Blues; Ring of Fire; and Hands on a Hardbody. Off Broadway he performed in Texas in Paris, which then travelled to Paris, France, last December. When not performing at The Old Globe, The Milwaukee Repertory, Seattle Repertory, or The Cincinnati Playhouse (to name a few), Scott runs a cattle ranch in Texas, plays Martin guitars, visits Civil War battlefields, and listens to the radio naked. An avid songwriter, Scott has two CDs of original songs: Older Than Dirt and Vegetarian Nightmare. ScottWakefield.com

Volunteers of Northern Sky Theater Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “yes!” then we have the perfect opportunity for you! Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call Ann Birnschein, Volunteer Coordinator, at (920) 854-6117 ext. 104 or e-mail volunteer@northernskytheater.com. We proudly present our 2016 volunteers...
