WELCOME TO PENINSULA STATE PARK On behalf of the Wisconsin State Park System, I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park, one of Wisconsin’s most complete state parks and a favorite camping destination. Peninsula State Park draws over a million visitors annually from all around the world and is one of the many jewels of Door County. With 468 campsites, three group campsites, lighthouse, outdoor theater, golf course, nature center, swimming beach, biking and hiking trails, 150-foot bluffs and eight miles of lake Michigan shoreline, you are sure to find many recreational opportunities. Please be sure to check out an amazing sunset from Weborg Point or Sven’s Bluff, one of my personal favorites. This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our partner Northern Sky. Campers and park visitors can look forward to a new performance, We Like It Where?, as well as enjoying last year’s favorite, Dairy Heirs, and a remount of Windjammers. I expect you will be amazed at the many natural wonders that are around every corner. As we raise the curtain on the 2019 season, remember to explore, enjoy and be a part of the experience. Enjoy the show! Brian Markowski Superintendent Peninsula State Park

WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER Welcome to another season beneath the northern sky. Our 2019 lineup is as exciting as ever. All four shows offer great variety in time and tone. Our summer world premiere is We Like It Where? and is set in the 1960s. Complementing it are Windjammers, a schooner tale set in 1876, and Dairy Heirs, a modern-day moo-sical. Rounding out our fall season is Dad’s Season Tickets, set around the Packer Super Bowl win in 1997. All of these shows, like everything at Northern Sky, have been written with you, our Door County audience, in mind. Our unique mission of creating original shows gives us the opportunity to make sure that what we offer is something that speaks to you and resonates with your life experience. We’ve now had thirty years of practice, resulting in over sixty shows tailor-made for you. This fall, we will have our world premiere in the Gould Theater at Northern Sky’s Creative Center. Last summer in this playbill we announced that we were breaking ground for our new home at the corner of county highways A and F. This summer we are announcing the opening of our new theater, set for Labor Day weekend. It has been amazing to watch the buildings go up so fast. It is beyond thrilling to contemplate all that this venue will allow us to do in continuing to create original theater. We will now have a home in which to develop our new works, giving us a place to do readings and workshops. We anticipate our creative center being full of life and collaboration, securing our future and giving those who love Northern Sky a place to come back to for many years to come. Northern Sky Theater: Two Stages - One Sky Thanks for coming and enjoy the show!

Northern Sky Theater

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD 1994. Twenty-five years ago, for the first time, Northern Sky Theater, then known as American Folklore Theatre, presented two musical stage plays. Do you remember what they were? The Passage and Belgians in Heaven. Before that at least one summer production had been a musical revue of songs and stories, not necessarily with a plot. This was the beginning of our current summer format, musical stage plays, usually one a premiere, presented in repertory. All of these plays have been written especially for our organization and your enjoyment. This is a unique accomplishment that we all celebrate. Thumbing through the 1994 playbill we see the names Fred Alley, James Valcq, Fred Heide, Dave Alley, Neen Rock, John Hansen, James Kaplan, Karen Mal, Amy Chaffee, Mike Christman, Lee Becker and Jeff Herbst. As you look through this year’s playbill, you will see many of the same names. We are indebted to these early AFT company members for their vision and commitment. We are extremely fortunate to have so many company pioneers still with us, instilling in the new people who come our organization’s ethos. A big thank you goes out to our 1994 donors and advertisers who were so helpful in sustaining us in those early times. As I look through my old 1994 playbill and the 2019 one that is going to print in a few days, I see some of the same names and businesses. I know it says a lot about who we are and what we do that they are still supporting us. The 1994 playbill announced ‘with delight’ the signing of a new long-term contract with the DNR, assuring our continued partnership with Peninsula State Park. We have recently signed another long-term contract so our partnership will continue to flourish. Twenty-five years ago, I was coming with my children, when we were on our annual Door County vacation, to see the plays. Now I bring my children and grandchildren, just as many of you did tonight, as a fun family tradition. Or are you coming for the first time, starting your own tradition, alone, on a date, or in a group? Welcome. We are very happy you are here to enjoy this evening of delightful entertainment beneath the Northern Sky as we embark on the next twentyfive years. Mary Seeberg

JEFF HERBST Artistic Director / Performer / Director Jeff Herbst has been with Northern Sky since 1991 and became artistic director in 1993. He began his collaboration with the Heritage Ensemble, Northern Sky’s predecessor, in 1985 as part of the Governor Dodge State Park troupe and then migrated north to direct for the Peninsula State Park group in 1988 and 1989. He has worked on over sixty original productions with Northern Sky, including Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Packer Fans from Outer Space, and Bone Dance. Jeff was instrumental in developing Northern Sky’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, nurturing writing teams in bringing an original work “from the page to the stage.” Jeff has an MFA in acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theaters throughout the United States. He and Fred Alley were honored in 2017 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from their alma mater, Mt. Horeb High School, for their work in creating original musical theater.

DAVE MAIER Managing Director This is Dave’s twelfth year with Northern Sky and his tenth as managing director. He met his muse, Barb, when they attended the UW-Madison Theatre program together. Later, after graduating from the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Academy in San Francisco, Dave joined the A.C.T. acting company as an Equity actor, eventually assuming additional roles as a conservatory trainer, literary coordinator, and stage director. He was also production manager of A.C.T.’s Plays-in-Progress Program, where he helped produce over thirty premiere productions, many of which he either designed or directed. He co-founded and served eight years as artistic director for Encore Theatre Company in San Francisco, a critically acclaimed repertory experimental theater company. Barb and Dave have two beautiful grown sons, and they’ve been blessed to call Door County home for twenty-five years now.

KELLY DOHERTY Director / Choreographer / Performer Kelly has made a name for herself since moving to Milwaukee. She has appeared with Chamber Theater, Skylight Music Theater, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Opera Theater, Next Act, and, most recently, First Stage Theater where she lived out her childhood dream of playing the Trunchbull in Matilda. Some favorite roles include Bodey (Lovely Sunday for Creve Ceouer), Pish Tush (The Mikado), Maria/Homer (Mr. Burns), and Williamina (Silent Sky), and to her knowledge has never been an ingenue. Next season, she will be directing The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors at First Stage Theater. When not onstage, she enjoys watching madefor-TV romantic comedies, drinking fine whiskey while not wearing pants, and singing to her cats. Not necessarily in that order. Much love to her parents for their continued love and support. When Butter Churns to Gold 2015

A Note from the Authors of We Like It Where? Book by Corrie Beula Kovacs & Stephen Kovacs Music & Lryics by Stephen Kovacs The 1960s was a decade filled with world-changing events: the assassination of JFK, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War and the start of the Women’s Rights movement, just to name a few. Amid all this upheaval, a little village in Wisconsin faced a problem that was so small by comparison, one would think it would hardly be noticed. The problem? Winneconne had been left off the 1967 state highway map due to a typographical error. To a person in 2019, the problem seems even smaller than it did then. So what? Just take out your smart phone and pull it up on Google Maps! But in 1967, being left off the highway map meant disaster for a community that relied on summer tourism to keep its economy afloat. The village leaders appealed to then Governor Warren P. Knowles, who understandably denied their request for a costly reprint. Ironically, Knowles had just launched a tourism campaign as part of his reelection bid, which came with the slogan, “Wisconsin: We Like It Here!” Playing on the state tourism motto, C. O. Rogers of the Winneconne News wrote a column in which he queried, “We Like It Where?”, and the media campaign to save Winneconne began. Winneconne spent the winter and spring of 1967 drumming up as much publicity as they could. If they couldn’t get back on the map, they would make sure every Wisconsinite knew about their village. The hilarity and creativity that ensued was so delightful that the story started to spread beyond Wisconsin. A nationwide contest was held and, by the time a winner was chosen, people around the world knew the name Winneconne. The story of the secession of Winneconne is one of ordinary people achieving more than they thought was possible. This is a message that speaks to us all, because our self-imposed limitations are often the biggest obstacles to our success. As first-time authors and a first-time composer, Winneconne’s story has spoken to us in moments of self-doubt. We see their message reflected in our own unlikely story of bringing this show to the Northern Sky stage. And we hope that these voices from the past will help you to see yourself in the best light possible.

DOUG MANCHESKI Performer Doug has spent over two decades entertaining the wonderful audiences at Northern Sky Theater. His favorite show is always the last one. Over the years, patrons may have seen him in Boxcar, Lumberjacks in Love, Muskie Love, Victory Farm, Bone Dance, The Bachelors, and Fishing for the Moon, among many others. He is probably best known for playing Marvin in Guys on Ice, a role he has lost count on the number of times he has performed, but is pretty sure it hovers around 2,000. He most recently was seen this past spring in Third Avenue Playhouse’s Shooting Star. He has performed with most major theaters in Wisconsin Bone Dance 2010 after living and performing in NYC for several years. He is a graduate of New York University’s graduate actor training program. He has studied with Mike Nichols, Paul Sills, and David Mamet. If you’re one of the few people who hasn’t seen Guys On Ice, he’s starring in it over the holidays at Madison’s Barrymore Theater. A Note from the Author of Dairy Heirs Book by Eva Nimmer & Joel Kopischke Music by Alissa Rhode Lyrics & Story by Joel Kopischke Northern Sky Theater has long been almost home for me. In the 1980s I turned down a summer job with Heritage Ensemble. Soon after, Milwaukee friends (Jeff Herbst, Suzanne Graff, James Valcq) were working with AFT. Later, I got to know Doc and Fred and others as I watched over 20 original musicals come to life here. And in 2001, I was humbled and honored to perform in the concert performance of The Spitfire Grill. That summer I had an idea for a show about a family farm where the father has passed away, leaving a brother and sister to sort things out while also gathering on a porch with friends singing songs and telling jokes. Along Dairy Heirs’ 17-year journey to its 2018 premiere, that original story was immeasurably enriched by Alissa, Eva, Molly, Jeff, everyone at Northern Sky Theater, and many others who contributed time, talent, ideas, and support. Our whole team was thrilled by the warm and enthusiastic welcome we were given last year and we’re overjoyed that NST audiences once again get to delight in the journeys of siblings Gabe and Elsie, their kindhearted neighbor Linda, quirky farmhand twins TJ and JT, and one extraordinary cow. Dairy Heirs tries to reflect my favorite experiences with Northern Sky —sitting around a campfire singing songs, making jokes, spinning tales, and sharing our lives’ highs and lows. It shares a few Fred Alley inspirations— characters dealing with mortality, some corny jokes (old and new), and a tenderhearted story beneath the goofy fun. I hope our story resonates with everyone—young and old, rural and city folk (like me), and even the lactose-intolerant. Dairy Heirs is about the heroes of America’s Dairyland, especially women farmers. It’s also about how important it is to keep music in our hearts, share a laugh, and to find what family and home mean to us. I first performed onstage almost 50 years ago, and throughout my entire life theatre has felt like home. And now, finally, this theatre truly is home. I can’t wait to join you sitting under the Northern Sky this summer. There’s no place that I’d rather be.

This past winter he enjoyed being directed by his talented wife Molly Rhode at First Stage’s production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical, as Bob Bradley. And he was joined by his wonderful daughter Silvia, in her onstage debut, as Sheep Ensemble. After that he was Lt. Kelly at Chamber Theater’s production of Ben Butler. Some favorite roles at Northern Sky include Jim Olson in Doctor! Doctor!, Samuel Clemens in Life on the Mississippi, Rufus in Fishing for the Moon, Will Hannah in Main-Travelled Roads, and Moonlight in Lumberjacks in Love. At the threshold... Not long ago, Northern Sky launched the

Constellation Campaign to ensure our future. Because of folks like you, the response has been tremendous. Our creative center, on the corner of A & F, featuring our new indoor space, The Gould Theater, is nearly complete. In fact, we celebrate the opening of the new theater this September with the world premiere Dad’s Season Tickets. We couldn’t be more thrilled. Also momentous, especially if you are reading this in Peninsula State Park: the first phase of our park renovation is set to begin this fall. First on the list? New restrooms with, get this, flush toilets! Demolition begins as soon as we close our summer season.

“What’s fun is bringing my granddaughter and my daughter. We’ve had generations of family members that have joined us.”

38

Sandra Rowley & family Northern Sky Theater

While the creative campus will allow us to consolidate

many of our operations under one roof and give us a year-round presence, we will continue to perform our “main event” summer season in Peninsula State Park. We’ve had a remarkable 49-year partnership with the Wisconsin State Park system. In 2016, Northern Sky and the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources renewed this partnership for fifteen years, effectively securing our home in the park for the next generation of theatergoers. After all, where else can a person get what we can only describe as the “Northern Sky Experience” – that extraordinary blend of relaxed and festive fellowship celebrating sublime, honest human joy and purpose in such a magnificent, natural cathedral?

Improving our summer home is an integral component of the long-range vision of the company. Because of YOUR investment in our future, the

Constellation Campaign is at 95% of goal. But at the door is not over the threshold. And that small sliver, that unmet 5% is significant. Still in the works, designed and ready to go when funding permits, are critical plans to: • • • •

Renovate and expand the dressing room facilities Rebuild and upgrade the technical booth Replace the concessions and merchandise facilities Make improvements to lighting, general landscaping and parking

With a few strategic tweaks and renovations, we can make some dramatic improvements to the overall Northern Sky experience that will impact the quality of your visit without changing what you love most about our theater under the stars. We know that your Northern Sky summer memories are special not only because of the shows that we perform but also because of the beautiful place where we are privileged to perform them. In making your gift to our campaign, we ask that you consider the contribution Northern Sky Theater has made to the Door County community, to the art form of creating original musicals, and to the magic that we’ve brought you and your family over the years.

Please make your gift or pledge today.

Your continued belief in what we do is the key

component to the success of this campaign. ConstellationCampaign.NorthernSkyTheater.com

A Note from the Authors of Windjammers Book by Robin Share Music by Clay Zambo Lyrics by Robin Share & Clay Zambo When we first started working on Windjammers, the idea was simple: create an evening of Great Lake sailor songs – chanteys – loosely woven together by a handful of characters serving as narrators. But the problem with characters is that once you start writing them, they quickly develop minds of their own. Suddenly there was a newly minted captain at fiery loggerheads with his mule-headed first mate, a superstitious deck hand inventing his own improbable vocabulary (“Don’t whistle! You wanna invocate a storm?!?”), a long-distance courtship comprised mostly of baked goods, and a bookish farm boy coming of age on the vast open waters of Lake Michigan. And to complicate matters, as the story grew, so did the music. Once let loose from simply adapting folk tunes, the score kept the flavor of the familiar chanteys while soaring into lyrical, whimsical and evocative original theatre songs. And with all those eccentric characters singing their big, bold songs, what were we writers to do but throw up our hands and see where the winds would take us? We’re delighted that Windjammers will be setting sail at Northern Sky again this summer. Again, audiences will be magically transported onto the deck of a three-masted schooner where actors on an empty stage become skilled sailors, managing an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys and canvas to navigate their vessel through treacherous waters, while the women on shore worry and plan … and bake! There is also plenty of nautical lore sprinkled throughout Windjammers. For fun as you watch, see if you can answer these questions: • What’s the difference between a freshie and a salty? • What do freshwater sailors never call their ship? • And why the heck is Windjammers performed on Tuesday and Thursday nights, but never on Fridays?!? Many thanks to all our friends at Northern Sky, and especially to Molly Rhode who directed the debut production, and to Jeff Herbst who has taken the helm this summer. Thanks to Elise Dewsberry and Scott Guy at New Musicals, Inc, who shepherded Windjammers through its infancy, and to Peter Welkin whose direction for the STAGES Festival propelled Windjammers forward. Hurrah, we’re windward bound!

He is still working on his new book, but since he could never find a big publisher to give him a fat advance, it’s still on the shelf, so to speak. He hopes you have a great summer! Enjoy the show!

A Note from the Author of Dad’s Season Tickets Book, Music & Lyrics by

Matt Zembrowski

Vince Lombardi once said that the three most important things in life are: faith, family, and the Green Bay Packers. Religious affiliation notwithstanding, the legendary coach seemed to have prophetically described pretty much every Wisconsinite since about 1960. I don’t usually have a goal in mind when I start writing a show; I just want to tell a good story. But when I settled on the idea of writing a show about Packers season tickets, I realized that I had a unique opportunity to try to bridge the seemingly insurmountable gap between my two life-long loves: sports and the performing arts. I became an avid Packer fan in middle school, long before I got involved in theater. But I didn’t fully understand the Packer Mystique until much later in life. There is something undeniably special, something undeniably WISCONSIN about the Green Bay Packers: the team’s mythically humble beginnings; their years of peerless success…and mind-boggling mediocrity; the fact that they are the only publicly owned franchise in all of professional sports. Add in the legendary aura of Lambeau Field and you have a nearly 30-year waiting list to buy Packer Season Tickets. Love ’em or hate ’em, just about everyone in our state has some connection to the Green and Gold. So how do you bring all of that into the world of musical theater? The clue was hiding in Lombardi’s famous quote: family. Everyone has one, and, much like the Packers, nearly everyone has had mixed feelings about their family. But no matter what, they are always there. So I drew inspiration from my own extended bloodline when creating the Kosinski family in Dad’s Season Tickets. But I tried to create characters that were recognizable and relatable to everyone, especially in their foibles and shortcomings. It is my sincere hope that anyone who sees this show, regardless of how they feel about the Packers (or professional sports in general), will be able to say that for one brief, shining moment theater lovers and sports fans could come together under the same roof and play nice. Only in Wisconsin. Go Pack Go! – Matt Zembrowski

Matt started playing baseball and watching the Packers in 1995, and auditioned for his first musical, Little Shop of Horrors, when he was a sophomore in high school. Since then, he has acted in, directed and/or music directed nearly 75 shows in the Milwaukee area. He is also a Milwaukee Brewers season seat holder. Northern Sky Theater Donations Experts tell us that running a professional theater that solely creates and produces original musicals priced so the whole family can attend is impossible. We do it anyway. We exist because of you. Individual and foundation gifts account for over 30 percent of Northern Sky’s operating budget. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the contributors listed below. Northern Sky Theater is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, so your donation is tax-deductible. Donations from April 1, 2018, through March 31, 2019, are acknowledged in this playbill.

Thank You to our Generous Donors! BELGIAN ANGEL Alexander Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Volunteers of Northern Sky Theater Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “yes!” then we have the perfect opportunity for you! Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call the Northern Sky office at (920) 854-6117 or e-mail volunteer@northernskytheater.com. We proudly present our 2018 volunteers... SUMMER RAIN POLICY The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky Theater will not cancel until showtime, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If cancelled, and the show is less than half over, you will have the option of a mail-in refund coupon or a rain check ticket, which is good for any future summer performance without expiration. If a show is more than half over when interrupted, patrons will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend, and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
