daddy-Daughter Dance: A waltz in the park By Debbie Blahnik Director of Children’s Ministries

ore than 1,210 dads and daughters attended this year’s daddy-daughter dance, “A Waltz in the Park.” The foyer was transformed into a park, with benches, flowers and trees everywhere. There were face painters and strolling balloon artists, and popcorn, hot dog and cotton candy vendors. The DJ played a variety of music to keep the dads and daughters dancing. I have had teary-eyed dads, granddads and even some moms tell me that this night will be something they will never forget. I believe, without a doubt, that God smiles when He sees dads loving on their children as He loves on us. It’s something I hope these dads will feel encouraged to continue throughout the year.

Stand, He Will Deliver

id you ever catch the 1988 flick Stand and Deliver? Edward James Olmos played Jaime Escalante, a teacher who was determined to challenge failing students in a failed system to a higher level of excellence. He took even the most troublesome teens at his East Los Angeles high school and turned them into dedicated students, ready to learn. He stood his ground and delivered inspiration to those who needed it the most. Jesus does the same for us. Things in our world are not as secure as we are accustomed to. We know that recessions, wars, diseases and natural disasters will come, but when they do, we are tempted to lose heart. But we can strike back against anxiety and temptation. We can stand firm in our faith and watch our strong Lord deliver us through. The Holy Spirit reminds us to do this. Jesus speaks of tough times in Matthew 7:24-27: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Well, it is raining, the streams are rising, and the winds are beating on your house of faith. Stand firm upon the rock of Jesus, and watch Him deliver you through trials and disappointments. We will be hurt; we will be confused. We may have to scramble, and we might have to do without. But no bad economy, no layoff, no sickness or failed relationship can ever take away our relationship with God and the certainty of fellowship with Him forever. Stand firm on your faith in Christ. Commune with Him continually in the Word and in prayer. Serve the people He places in your path. Give back of the time, talent and treasure He has given you. And Paul’s confidence in the Lord’s deliverance will be yours, too: “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18, NIV).

Lights On!

his week Pastor Joel is discussing sin in our lives. This is not a single act or motive or decision; this is a state of being – our condition. We are sinful creatures who need Christ, and in Christ we are a new creation: off with the old, on with the new. Saying that and living in it are two very different things though. I get it, like I get the idea of light, but I don’t get it, like I don’t get what light actually is. I mean, is light the invisible thing that gives reality to the things that are not light? Can you hold, touch or smell light? When you turn on a light, what is it that you actually see – the light or the things apparent now that the light is on? Similarly, sin is a state of being that we are in before Christ, and then after Christ comes into our lives and “turns on” the light, we are changed forever. It is His light that resets our state, our condition, and casts a new reality all around us, like light does in a room. The darkness of our sinful state was our reality in Adam, then our reality changed forever, only because of Christ, not by anything we did. It is like the moon. When we see the moon, it is not because of anything the moon has to offer or give off, but because of the light that is reflected off of the moon from the sun. We see the light, but we don’t actually see the light, only as it is reflected by the moon. We are to be the light of the world, to bring a different reality to the dark room, to bring Christ in and let His light shine on us and then be reflected to the rest of the world. Then, who we

really are in Him is visible as it reflects the light of Christ. So keep as close to the light as you can, that it may reflect all the brighter for others to see! One way to ensure we do that is to be in community together. See, when many little lights get together and shine as one, the effect is multiplied. Think of Christmas lights or candles. When only one is lit, it’s true it pierces the darkness, but when many are grouped together, the darkness recedes and subsides. Be a part of it with us in Oviedo and get “plugged in.” Whether it is to a small group, a service team or one of the many social events, these are all great ways to let your light shine. I am reminded of that song my kids, Zoe and Matt, often sing, “This Little Light of Mine.” Let your light shine! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Little Cabin in the Woods

ctually, a beautiful cabin in the mountains is where Patti and I had a chance to get away and relax and soak in what God is doing in our lives, in our family, and in the church we absolutely love being a part of. In my effort to give away a little of what I experienced, while I sat on the back deck every morning, I got a picture of what God has entrusted us with. As I read, and prayed, one morning specifically, I remember looking over the valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains and seeing an incredible picture. In the valley were many other cabins and homes, with lights on, fires going with smoke coming out of the chimneys, and just the smell of fresh air. It was beautiful! But the picture I had for myself was this: I felt like God was saying, “This is what I have entrusted to you.” Even though I know there is so much more beyond what I could see, what I saw was something I could wrap my arms around and see how God wanted to use me. My thought was I have been given the privilege of being a part of the community of West Oaks, and even though I know the whole world is out there waiting for someone to go out to it, my responsibilities are right here, and it is absolutely beautiful! And then I started thinking about you. What is your valley, or area, God has given you to be a part of and give your life to? In my sermon two weeks ago, I talked about

what it means to “work out your salvation,” as Paul wrote in Philippians 2:12-13, and I believe this is part of the process. What is your life about, and why did God gift you in the ways He did? Sitting on the back porch, overlooking that valley, I had a tremendous peace come over me about my role as the minister of the West Oaks community. And so often, we don’t have peace in our lives when it comes to what God has called us to, or gifted us for. We worry and fret because we just don’t understand how or why God wants to use us. Some of that is right to feel, and some of it is very unhealthy to feel. Deep inside we know what we are like, and we don’t understand why, or how, God would use us. But the truth is, He does want to use you, and He does believe you can do whatever it is He calls you to do. It starts when you are able to take some time for yourself and hear from God. Use the Lenten study to help you prepare yourself for the plans God has for you, His perfect plan. In that valley, I woke up to every morning; I saw life. I saw the tremendous potential of what God wanted that area to be like. I saw how the people in that town understood the role they were given and went about working that out in their lives every day. It was a very quaint little town in northern Georgia, but the people there used what God had blessed them with and made those of us who were there for only a short time feel like we belonged there. The Evolution of Pen Pals By Sean Cooper Director of Student Ministries

tudents are serving around the globe in the most spectacular ways. For many years, young people have boarded planes across the country and served in various cultures worldwide. But there is a new wave of students who are adding a twist to building relationships and expanding the Kingdom. The Emergence of Social Networking For the last five years, Northland has sent more than 100 students to places such as Egypt, Ukraine, Jamaica, Germany, Poland, South Africa, Swaziland, the Dominican Republic, New Orleans and Mississippi. In the next 12 months, more students will join others in Brazil and Sri Lanka, but the difference between trips now and 20 years ago is incredibly significant. For some of us, the weeks following a foreign trip involved the difficult task of building relationships through snail mail. Letters often took weeks to arrive, and many would get lost in the long journey. With the arrival of platforms such as Facebook, text messaging, and iChat, students are literally talking face to face with new friends the day they arrive back home.

that focus on intergenerational leadership. In a variety of places, high school students mentor middle school students just like the model Northland uses. Even though there are oceans that separate students once they arrive back in their own communities, many of them follow up with one another in sharing challenges, and praying for and encouraging each other. A new global network is leading the church. Second, students are practicing a new form of hospitality. Some of America’s best ambassadors are now found through young Christians who are making family-to-family connections cross-culturally. Not only are students making new friends, but their parents and siblings are also interacting with young people as a result of a Distributed Journey. A number of families have traveled overseas, both from America as well as from other countries, to spend time with this newly formed body of Christ. Friends and families are staying in each other’s homes, attending worship together and serving in their communities. Lastly, new technology is allowing students to learn from each other year round. An example of this is in the weekly gathering of students who have made a commitment to read chosen topics together, discuss Scriptures from their cultural perspective, and spend time praying for each other. Rather than limiting themselves to the input of a Western American perspective, this body of believers is discovering who God is and what He is doing through the eyes of others.

What This Has Done for the Church There are many great results from this new technology. First of all, students have a new network of encouragement and accountability. On many of these trips, Northland’s young people are meeting others who serve in their culture in very similar ways. One of the greatest examples of this includes youth ministries across the cultural divides

So What’s Next? • Join a trip! It’s not too late to get on board and serve overseas or locally. Learn the stories of others and discover what God is doing in other places and cultures. • Sponsor a student! Maybe you are unable to serve on a Distributed Journey this year. Instead, help financially to send a student on your behalf. Keep up with him or her through one of these new technological platforms! • Join a social network! If you are intimidated by this step, ask someone younger to help you, which will give you a great new connection to them and others.

Serving Project and Retreat at southwind April 24, 25, 26

ould you be interested in bringing your family (age 8 and above) to experience a wonderful weekend of serving and spiritual retreat? Join a Local Serve Team as team members travel less than an hour away to Southwind, A Young Life Camp, to help a great cause. Southwind needs help painting, building ramps, securing bunk beds, and doing concrete and tile work as we help the camp become handicappedaccessible. On Friday, April 24, more than 100 people will join in this great serving weekend. Team leaders will work with the younger participants (ages 8 to 12) and do landscaping. A food team is needed to help in the kitchen areas, and others will paint the cabins and lead everyone in this project. Friday and Saturday nights will feature dinner, fellowship and a time to grow closer to God with great speakers and programs. Supplies will be provided. All you need are your toiletries and sleeping bag. Sunday, worship in the morning, pack up and head out. Family WorshiP: Engaging the Senses BY BECKY WELDON Children’s Curriculum Team

t is story time, and Daddy is reading. Bobby is sitting in his lap and staring intently at the pictures. “Look, Daddy,” he says, pointing at one of the pictures. “The turtle is happy because he has a friend.” Sarah is lying down with her eyes closed. She cheers when the turtle saves the raccoon from the waterfall. Michael picks up a ball and tosses it into the air. Daddy asks him to sit, but he can only be still for a moment. As soon as the story is over, Michael insists the family act out the story. God designed each person with the ability to learn differently. Three of the ways human beings learn is by seeing, hearing and touching. Most people prefer one way of learning over the others. What styles do your children prefer? Use the following guide to help your children engage in worship using their learning styles. Embrace your children’s God-given learning styles, and you will find that they, and you, are better able to gain from worshiping together as a family.

Visual Learner Are your children like Bobby, needing to see pictures or video to connect with a story? • Ask your children to watch carefully and draw pictures in their worship folders of what they see. Suggest they answer these questions with drawings: — What do the worship leaders and musicians do to worship God? — What’s happening on the video screen? —How are the people all around you worshiping God? • Search online or in Bible picture books for a picture of the Bible story and discuss what is happening in the picture. Auditory Learner Do your children like to listen to a story and then talk about it like Sarah? • Ask your children to take notes or draw in their worship folders about the sounds, lyrics and teachings they hear in the service. • After the service, ask them to share what they wrote and discuss any questions. • Ask them to retell the Bible story. Here is what Richard Foster says about the discipline of prayer in Celebration of the Disciplines: “Do you know why the mighty God of the universe chooses to answer prayer? It is because His children ask. God delights in our asking. He is pleased at our asking. His heart is warmed by our asking… “To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us. If we are unwilling to change, we will abandon prayer as a noticeable characteristic of our lives. The closer we come to the heartbeat of God, the more we see our need and the more we desire to be transformed.”

And while He uses everything in our lives to point us to Him, we can have quality time with God through prayer. (You may want to use this opener if you are going to plan a prayer vigil with your group, or challenge them to “watch and pray.”) Tie it in: In this week’s reader, we have been following Jesus’ path to the cross, focusing on His prayer in Gethsemane. It is such a beautiful passage, as we not only see His agony, but we see aspects of both His human and divine nature. While He had the divine perspective of what He had come to earth to accomplish, He also had the very human needs of comfort and companionship. He just wanted His disciples to watch with Him, to be with Him, to support Him through this unbelievably difficult part of His journey. But they could not.

Introduction: Prayer is not complicated. Sometimes we make it more complicated than it was ever intended to be. But it is not necessarily easy. Prayer, simply stated, is engaging our hearts with God. Prayer consists of both speaking to God (a discipline of engagement) and listening to God (a discipline of abstinence).

(For what situations or things?) • How should you pray? • What struggles do you encounter as you pray? “It would of course be a rather low-voltage spiritual life in which prayer was chiefly undertaken as a discipline, rather than as a way of co-laboring with God to accomplish good things and advance His kingdom purposes. Yet prayer can be a discipline, and a highly effective one, as we see from our Lord’s advice to those with him in the Garden of Gethsemane: ‘Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation.’ “Indeed, the indirect effects of prayer upon the conduct of our lives is so obvious and striking that they have been mistakenly treated at times as the only point of prayer… “That conversation, when it is truly a conversation, makes an indelible impression on our minds, and our consciousness of Him remains vivid as we go our way.” (The Spirit of the Disciplines, by Dallas Willard)

Transition: Give group members an opportunity to share their experiences with fellowship and solitude from last week. Be prepared to share your own thoughts, in case others are hesitant.

Challenge: (3 minutes) In order to change our patterns during Lent, it can be helpful to change our prayer habits as well. One great way to do that is to change the times we pray. Early morning and late night can be wonderful times to be alone with God. There is an old practice of a prayer vigil, which just means being vigilant, wakeful, or watchful. If you have not experienced this, try it this week. You may want to do this together by choosing a 24-hour period to pray around the clock, assigning all the hours of that day to group members. Closing: (2 minutes) Join hands or kneel for closing prayer. Thank God for giving us the “dignity of causality.” You may want to use The Evening Prayer by St. Augustine. Watch thou, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend thy sick ones, Lord Christ. Rest thy weary ones. Bless thy dying ones. Soothe thy suffering ones. Pity thine afflicted ones. Shield thy joyous ones. And all for thy love’s sake. Amen.
