And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

what is passover and seder? By Dr. dan lacich Pastor
Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. And when your children ask you, “What does this ceremony mean to you?” then tell them, “It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.” — Exodus 12:24-27
T
he people of Israel had been enslaved by the Pharaohs of Egypt for generations. When it came time that God was going to deliver them from their slavery, He gave them instructions for the final meal they would eat in Egypt. They were to take a lamb or a goat from their flocks. It was to be one without any blemish or defect. They were to slaughter this unblemished sacrifice

A Declaration of Dependence
A
mericans are independent people. Our culture lifts up the notion of the “selfmade man.” We live in a society that takes pride in dependence upon no one but self. There are certainly virtuous aspects to this viewpoint. But there are also some serious problems with it, namely, an independent spirit keeps us from depending upon Jesus. We can certainly believe that He is the Son of God. We can accept Him as our Savior and our Lord. We can truly feel thankful for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. But then we can live lives that are otherwise separate from His present power. And all because we politely avoid dependence upon Him and upon the community that calls itself Christian. The book of 1 John ends with this simple verse: “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols” (1 John 5:21). And independence can be idolatrous. Sometimes God takes us through circumstances that offer us no choice but to ask for help. In those moments of “weakness” that fly in the face of the Western mind-set of independence, we actually can experience a belonging to God and to His people that we were made for. Several years ago, I visited a dying woman who had resisted Christ and Christians all her life. Doctors had given her hours or days to live. I asked her if she wanted to talk about God. She stubbornly refused. “May I pray for you?” I asked. She replied weakly, “No, thanks. Please don’t.” She died a couple of
and roast it for their meal. But before they had the meal, they were instructed to dip a branch into the blood of the lamb and spread the blood on the wooden beam and doorposts of their house. This blood of the sacrificed lamb would be a sign to the angel of death. As the angel passed through the land of Egypt, every house that was covered by the symbol of the blood of the lamb would be spared. The angel of death would “pass over” that house, and all within it would live. God gave instructions to Moses that he passed on to the people. Every year they were to remember this event by celebrating this meal. They were instructed to pass on the truth of God’s deliverance to their children. Over the years, the celebration has grown so that now Passover is the name for the entire religious celebration, and Seder is the name given the meal. Each item in the meal has a symbolic significance related to the event of that first Passover. Unleavened bread was eaten to remind the people of how quickly they had to leave Egypt because the bread had no time to rise. Two types of bitter herbs are eaten in order to symbolize the harshness and bitterness of captivity in Egypt. Charoset is a sweet, brown, grainy food that symbolizes the material used by the slaves to construct buildings in Egypt. A vegetable was eaten after being dipped in saltwater, which represented the tears shed during years of slavery. A roasted shank bone of the lamb represented the sacrificial lamb. Finally, an egg representing the sacrifices made throughout the Passover was eaten. Along the way, Christians have recognized that the sacrificial lamb of the Passover was a clear foreshadowing of Jesus. Just as the blood of the lamb was spread on the wooden posts of the houses of the
Israelites, the blood of Jesus ran down the wooden post of the cross. In each case, the blood of the unblemished lamb defeated death for all who came under its covering. Just as the people of Israel found freedom from slavery because of that blood, so believers in Jesus Christ find freedom from sin because of faith in His blood. But a closer look at the rest of the Seder meal will reveal another way of looking at the symbols that point us to Jesus. As a result, many Christians now celebrate a Seder meal on Holy Thursday, or the night before Good Friday. The bitter herbs become a reminder of the bitterness and hardship that sin brings into our lives. The salt water in which a vegetable is dipped still represents tears. But instead of tears of suffering, they become tears of repentance as we turn back to God through Jesus Christ. The shank bone stands for the unbroken bones of Jesus the Lamb as He was sacrificed on the cross. The egg becomes a symbol of life that is found in Christ. The most important symbols for the Christian are the unleavened bread and the wine that are central to the Seder. It was the during a Seder or Passover meal that Jesus gathered with His closest followers on the night before He was crucified. Jesus took the bread that had been a reminder of the haste in leaving Egypt, and He completely changed its meaning. Now it was to be a reminder of His body, which was about to be broken for us. Just as bread gives life to those who eat it, the body of Christ gives life to all who get their nourishment from Him. The cup of wine that reminded people of the blood of the lamb and the Nile turned to blood as a plague now becomes a symbol of cleansing and participation. The cup of Christ now becomes the symbol of a new covenant between God and us. It is a covenant sealed in the blood of Jesus. It promises that all who eat of that bread and drink of that cup will by faith be rescued from sin to everlasting life.
“ All who eat of that bread and drink of that cup will by faith be rescued from sin to everlasting life.”
days later, clenching her stubborn, independent fist at God. If you are reading this, you are probably not like that woman; you are most likely a believer in Christ. But are you really depending upon Him? Are you pursuing Him with the humility that says, “Jesus, I will do anything You say”? Or have you politely declined when He has offered you deeper levels of dependence upon Him? Some of the hard times we are experiencing are actually blessed opportunities to start depending upon the Lord in ways we never have before. Don’t miss the blessing anymore. Stop living your life through your own intellect, will and talent. Declare your dependence upon Christ. Don’t swim on the surface anymore. Dive down deep into His love. In Ernest Hemingway’s classic tale For Whom the Bell Tolls, he quotes John Donne and writes, “No man is an island unto himself.” Find your place of belonging to Christ and to His people. You will never be the same! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

message, for everyone to come and receive a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ call throughout His ministry was just as simple and profound: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” The sacrificial system just got more personal. It moved from the altar and the hands of priests to the heart of each person. We must have a deep and profound understanding of our sin for this to make any sense. We tend to look around and see ourselves as much better than other people, but that is not how it works. Good-bye, Davidsons
W
hat a privilege it was last weekend to commission Alan and Tywonn for their move to Cameroon, in Africa. Alan will be counseling missionaries all over Africa, and Tywonn will be working with a local hospital as a volunteer. If you have been following the Davidsons on this journey, you can understand the ups and downs they have felt over the past two years. From finances to organizations to partner with to selling everything they own, they have managed to keep their eyes focused on the goal. And now we send them off as partners willing to give their lives to the mission field. I hope all of you at West Oaks have had at least some opportunity to hear the Davidsons’ heart about their call to Cameroon and their passion for those who are already serving Christ and giving their lives to those who have never heard the Gospel. As I spoke with Alan before they left, it has been amazing to hear how excited he and Tywonn are about this next phase of their lives. I believe people like the Davidsons are heroes, and I am honored to be their pastor and friend. If you want to know how to keep up with them on their journey, you can check out their website anytime (www. thedavidsonmission.com). I know they want all of us to stay connected with them and to pray for them daily. I believe this is something we can all do every day as we pray for one another. On their website, you also will find blogs they send out almost every day, pictures, things they need,
FAQs about their mission and other fun stuff you might enjoy hearing and reading about. For those of you who have known Alan and Tywonn and have supported them in different ways over the past two years as they have prepared for this time in their lives, thank you! If you are just joining our West Oaks community and would like to get to know the Davidsons, check out their website. I am sure you will enjoy who they are as partners in Christ! Also, as a reminder, just as the Davidsons are going away as missionaries to Africa, we can be a part of something that can change lives as well. April 18 is our Fusion project, and if you have not signed up to be a part of a team yet, now is the time to do that. There will be many reminders over the next few weeks to make sure everyone knows about and has responded to the needs that are right here in our own community. Thank you for being the church in the West Orange area. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Answer: SACRIFICE
THE GREATEST SACRIFICE Romans 6:23 Has someone ever done something for you when you could not do it yourself? Has someone ever given up something very important so you could have what you needed? That’s just what Jesus did for all of us. He knew that we could never pay for our sin. Sin is doing wrong in God’s eyes. The final punishment for sin is death, but Jesus didn’t want that for us. He chose to make the greatest sacrifice and give His life to take that punishment for us. His did that so you could have a life forever close to God. Paul said, “God gives you the gift of eternal life because of what Jesus has done.” Jesus didn’t do it because He had to. He did it because He loved you! He still does.

Family WorshiP: Be Encouraged BY BECKY WELDON Children’s Curriculum Team
A
ttending a worship service as a family has its challenges. Eleanor Tracey, Northland’s director of Children’s Curriculum, wants to encourage parents in that endeavor. Eleanor and her husband, Tim, Northland’s executive director of worship, have worshiped with their children, Michael and Marty, since before Children’s Church began at Northland. Eleanor recently shared highlights and advice from worshiping with their young children.
with Christ. Several times, he asked, “Are you risky?” Fiveyear old Marty was sucking her thumb and looking straight at him. I wasn’t sure she was listening until she popped her thumb out of her mouth and very seriously asked me, “Are we wisky?” I nodded, reminded that the Holy Spirit is always helping young children understand what they are hearing. I encourage parents to never assume their children are not listening and watching. Regardless of their wiggles, they understand much more than you may think! How did you keep your children engaged in service? Some of the terms used in the service were too advanced for them. So every time I heard a big, unfamiliar word, I leaned over and whispered a short definition to them. This kept them engaged in what they were hearing. Michael and Marty also saw that Mommy was interested in the sermon, so they should be, too. By including them, I showed them, “This service is for you.”
What are some of your memories of worshiping with your children? I have many precious memories of worshiping with Michael and A young Michael (now age 20) explains the lesson to little Marty (now age 17). Marty. One treasured moment was a Sunday when Pastor Joel’s sermon topic How did you encourage them to go? challenged us to take on the risks of a closer walk I remember the struggles. We had many days when our kids

Week 5
“The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” —Westminster Shorter Catechism, #1 Lesson Objective: To challenge participants to set aside some time for inner silence and celebration this week.
Bible Truths: • God often speaks to us with a still, small voice. • We can exercise spiritual postures and attitudes that will help us to experience God’s presence and hear His voice in fresh, new ways.
Optional Opener: (10 minutes) Optional icebreaker #1: What daily situations are you in where you experience total quiet? (The shower, your car, your office, etc.) Do you prefer noise or quiet? How do you use your quiet moments? Transition: For most of us, the world is a pretty noisy place. In fact, most of us have gotten to the place that we are fairly uncomfortable with silence. Try an experiment with your group. Try to sit in total silence for two minutes. (It will probably seem like a lifetime!) We just aren’t used to it. Our lives are full of activity, and we surround ourselves with sensory input. And that isn’t wrong — it is just helpful sometimes to refocus by practicing a little silence.
Introduction: This week we are focusing on the spiritual disciplines of inner silence and celebration. Silence is a discipline of abstinence, as we have to intentionally find a place where we can separate ourselves from activity and quiet our hearts. Celebration is a discipline of engagement, as we intentionally set out to appreciate the good things in our lives and be grateful for the gifts God has given us. Both practices enhance the environment of a heart focused on God. Ask a group member to read the following aloud: “Jesus calls us from loneliness to solitude… Our fear of being alone drives us to noise and crowds. We keep up a constant stream of words even if they are inane…But loneliness or clatter are not our only alternatives. We can cultivate an inner solitude and silence that
sets us free from loneliness and fear. Loneliness is inner emptiness. Solitude is inner fulfillment. “Celebration is at the heart of the way of Christ. He entered into the world on a high note of jubilation. ‘I bring you good news of a great joy,’ cried the angel, ‘which shall come to all the people’ (Luke 2:10). He left the world bequeathing his joy to the disciples: ‘These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full’ (John 15:11). … Celebration brings joy into life, and joy makes us strong (Nehemiah 8:10).” (Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline)
Interactive Learning: (15 minutes) On silence: Read together this story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19:10-18. What do you think is the point of this story? What was God trying to teach Elijah? When have you heard God in any or all of these ways? Which one do you prefer? How does it affect you when you hear His voice in the stillness of your heart? On celebration: Read the instructions about the tithe in Deuteronomy 14:22-29. What do you think God was trying to teach the Hebrews about His nature? What was He trying to teach them about celebration? How did He want them to associate the two? How do you associate this kind of celebration with tithing? How does tithing contribute to gratitude to God, which is celebration?
Bible Application: In The Spirit of the Disciplines, Dallas Willard suggests that the discipline of silence takes the discipline of solitude one step further. If that is so, then perhaps the discipline of meditation takes both of them further still. Meditation requires one to be alone, to be silent and to intentionally focus on a God, or on a passage of Scripture or a theme from Scripture. • How has the Lenten reader, “In Me. In You.,” provided opportunities for each of these disciplines for you?
Wrap-up: You may have noticed in the Lenten Reader, “In Me. In You.,” that each Sabbath is set aside as a day of celebration. Here is what Dallas Willard says about the discipline of celebration: “Celebration…is one of the most important disciplines of engagement, yet most overlooked and misunderstood. It is the completion of worship, for it dwells on the greatness of God as shown in His goodness to us. We engage in
grumbled about going to church. Each time, we were prepared with a response to explain why they were expected to attend: “We go to church because God wants our worship. He misses you when you are not there.” How did worshiping together build a spiritual bond in your family? I loved the family discussions that arose from our worship experiences. One night as I tucked Marty in for bed, she said, “You know my favorite thing about Pastor Joel? It’s his hands. You know, at the end when he moves his hands like a cross and says, ‘Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.’ It makes me feel safe.” That simple picture has made each benediction more meaningful to me. What else would you like to share with parents? I am thankful for those special times. I love to have kids see that their parents are being taught, just like they are. I want to encourage parents to worship with their children. We are now privileged to have an amazing Children’s Church, where children learn God’s Word at their age level with their peers—don’t forgo that. Instead, you can worship together as a family by attending an adult class while the children go to Children’s Church. Then attend the worship service together. Or take advantage of the special family worship services when offered. Children are precious to God. To go with them to His throne is nothing short of amazing.
celebration when we enjoy ourselves, our life, our world, in conjunction with our faith and confidence in God’s greatness, beauty, and goodness. We concentrate on our life and world as God’s work and as God’s gift to us.”
Challenge: (3 minutes) Challenge your group members to find some times of silence this week and use them to enjoy and glorify God. Focus on an attitude of celebration.
Closing: (2 minutes) Use Psalm 30:11-12 as your closing prayer.
Get Connected Equipping is a term that goes beyond education and training. We become equipped as a result of our experiences and relationships in life. Along the way, there are things that we can learn to accelerate or enhance our growth and effectiveness. There are a variety of ways for adults at Northland to become better equipped for worship and service. Joining a group is a great way to connect in relationships that will challenge and encourage you. But for all groups at Northland, there is a “so that… .” Groups do not exist purely for the benefit of the members involved. Groups come together “so that” we can, together, be the church of Christ in the world. Below are some of the types of groups available: • Connection Groups — Connection Groups are ongoing groups that meet for friendship, worship, equipping, and service. Some of these groups meet at a worship site, but most meet in homes across the community. While their locations, times and topics of study vary, the groups and their facilitators remain basically unchanged. • Care Groups — These groups are a vital part of the health of the church, as they provide ongoing support through difficult times for specific life issues, such as addiction, divorce, illness or loss. • Special Interest Groups — Coming together around a single activity or shared trait, these groups meet for specific events, ongoing study or ministry to the community. • Service Groups — These groups come together for a single service project or an ongoing cause. You can find out more about these groups from Northland’s website (www.northlandchurch.net), from the Belong section in the back of this publication or from the Connection Center at your worship site.

preaching the message this weekend dr. joel c. hunter, senior pastor
........................................................................................................................................................................................... Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR.
