rom the heights of celebration and public fame to the depths of betrayal and, ultimately, death, Holy Week takes us through Christ’s passion-filled journey. Palm Sunday is a great time. The kids march through the aisles with palm branches in hand. The songs are upbeat. Everything seems right. Two thousand years ago and today, Jesus is being worshiped for Who He really is. But our worship would be incomplete if we stopped here… Good Friday is dark. The irony in the title that
this day carries pales in view of what really happened. The punishment for the sins of the world — everyone, everywhere, for every time — heaped upon one man. The worship of Jesus for what He has done comes into focus on this day. While we anticipate seeing the majesty of God’s plan with all of its cosmic and personal implications at Easter, let me encourage you to steep first in this truly “holy” week. It is a time set apart from the rest of the year for identifying with Christ and the love that compelled Him to go as far as He did for us. Consider the glory of God in His story and actions. Consider the ways that you could touch others with His passion. Consider the way that the observance of polar opposite days, like Palm Sunday and Good Friday, equip you for ministry everywhere, every day. Aspects of real life, real pain and real hope are present in everyone you meet. Be changed by the amazing and ongoing work of our sacrificing Lord — in you and through you, for others.

F
ew of us think of Central Florida as farming country (with the exception of orange groves!). But the small town of Zellwood contains thousands of acres of agricultural land that is dedicated to growing crops, such as corn, cabbages, strawberries, and other produce. On March 21, a team of more than 20 youths and adults from the Mount Dora worship site went to Long & Scott Farms to glean their cabbage fields. What is gleaning, you ask? Gleaning is a biblical term and is illustrated in this passage: “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. … Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:9-10).
to heart the Lord’s command to provide for those in need. In a little more than two hours, the group collected more than 6,000 pounds of cabbage, which will feed more than 18,000 hungry people who are clients of food banks throughout our region of Florida. We cut, bagged, and loaded more than 130 bags of cabbage onto trucks. The Lord truly used these Northlanders to meet both practical and spiritual needs in our community. In Hebrews 13:16, the Spirit says, “Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Christ is happy with your offering of service. Simple?
W
hen Jesus is asked what to do to do the work of God, He simply replies in John 6:28-29 telling the disciples and us, “Believe in Him whom He sent.” In 1 John 3:23, we are reminded of this simple, but not easy, work, “And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.” This is such a powerful and simple work to do, and yet we find ourselves struggling to live it out in real life on a daily basis with our families, our bosses, our neighbors. Why? I am going to suggest to you that verse 27 is at the root of why. In John 6, we see the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000, which sets the stage for this dialogue. Please go and read all of John 6 and the story of Passover in Exodus 12. They are both important for us to understand. So much symbolism and power! This is quickly followed by the disciples’ leaving and Jesus’ coming to them in a storm, walking on water, another display of His sovereign rule over the world. The crowd soon realizes Jesus and the disciples are gone, and goes looking for them across the sea to Capernaum. He had just fed a whole lot of people with limited supplies and disappeared, so they are a bit intrigued. John 6:25 tells us that when they find them, they ask, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus, in verses 26 and 27, says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.” They must have been saying, as we often do when we
come asking questions and looking for answers, “Yeah, that is cool, I guess, but not really what I asked about.” A bit confused by his reply, they say, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” (v. 28). “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent” (v. 29). This is confusing yet again, so they begin to challenge Him and ask for a sign, comparing him to Moses, who gave the people bread from heaven as a sign. Jesus corrects them and says that the Father gave Moses the bread that comes from heaven and gives life, as they, too, can now have. Wow, that sounds great, so they quickly reply, “Lord, always give us this bread” (v. 34). And then He does it again—they think they are talking about bread, like they thought they were going to get a job description earlier, and He tells them something else, something true, simple, but difficult. “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” Before they could reply, Jesus goes on to reveal why it is so difficult for them, and why it is so difficult for us to understand what He is saying, to follow His simple instructions. “But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe” (v. 36). We have gone full circle. That was the answer to the first question: What do we do to do the work of God? “Believe in Him whom He sent.” The Jews begin grumbling about who this Jesus really is, the son of Joseph, just a guy from Nazareth. Jesus then goes into a deeper discussion and accusation against them and warning to us: Believe, or else! Finish John 6. It is an ongoing development of the importance of believing in Him who is the bread of life, or else. That is why it is so hard sometimes, because it is so simple. We want to work for the food that spoils. We want job descriptions, to-do lists and boxes to check, as they did. We, like they, want the instructions to make sense to us. We want objectives that are tangible and achievable in a way we can measure. Jesus says, “No, simply believe in Me, and you will have eternal life.” Stop chasing the spoilable food of this world; chase Him! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Serving Project and Retreat Weekend April 24, 25, 26 vanessa puleo Northland Local Service Projects Coordinator
W
ould you be interested in experiencing a wonderful weekend of serving and spiritual retreat? Join a Local Serve Team project as it travels less than an hour away to help a great cause. Southwind, A Young Life Camp, is in need of painting, building of ramps, securing of bunk beds, and concrete and tile work to while we help their camp in the stages of becoming handicapped-accessible. While working on the camp, there will be times for prayer, worship and fellowship for everyone. Special events are planned for lunchtime and dinnertime. A program especially for you is being worked on!

What is Younglife? Young Life is a nondenominational Christian nonprofit organization that is committed to introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith. Young Life staff and leaders are caring adults who strive to build positive relationships with teenagers. Can children come and serve on this weekend? Yes, children 8 to 12 years old can come, and there will be a special program for them on site wile parents help with the projects. Children above that age can pitch in and work alongside you! What is the cost? There is no cost for this weekend serving. Just bring your sleeping bag, towel and smile!
When will I need to be there, and what is the schedule like? On Friday, April 24, we are asking that as many of you as possible come by 9 a.m. to begin; exceptions can be made if needed. We will work on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with breaks. Sunday morning is a time for worship, then packing up to head home at around noon. What kinds of projects will we be doing? We have four main areas to work on. Projects include painting cabins, installing ramps, doing light construction, putting rails on bunk beds and working in the bathrooms to widen the stalls.

TRUSTING JESUS John 6:28-29 What does God want? Some people think God wants us to do certain things or act a certain way. When the people asked Jesus, “What does God want from us? What works does He want us to do?” Jesus answered, “God’s work is to believe in the One He has sent.” This means that all God wants from us is for us to believe in Jesus, the One He sent to save us. But when Jesus says “believe,” He doesn’t mean to just accept something to be true. To believe in Jesus does not mean to just believe that He died for us and will come back one day. To believe in Jesus means to put your trust in Him, living every day for Him, doing things His way instead of your own way. That’s believing!

Family WorshiP: Symbols of Easter BY BECKY WELDON Children’s Curriculum Team
E
aster is a time for family and tradition. Many families come together on this special day for church services, egg hunts and special dinners. What are the traditions in your home? Next weekend, you will have the chance to worship together as a family during one of Northland’s Easter services. Use your time at the service to add a new tradition, The Easter Symbol Hunt, to your children’s list of Easter activities. The Easter celebration is filled with symbols. The symbols tell the story of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection. Symbols help God’s people remember His love and sacrifice. Did you know that the Northland worship center is filled with many of those symbols? Before or after the Easter service, see how many symbols your children can identify. Then use the symbols to discuss the meaning of Easter.
Where does a colorful stained-glass cross hang? (Above the foyer doors to the outside. The cross reminds us that Jesus died on the cross for our sins.) Where is the bridge? (Across the stage. The bridge shows that Jesus is the bridge to life forever with God. The bridge also helps us remember that we are connected with other Christians.) Look up and find the wood circle and beams on the ceiling. What do you think the design looks like? Choose your favorite answer from the following choices: A. To challenge participants to consider the role of sacrifice and service in their lives, and to remind them that love requires action.
Ask for volunteers from the group to read the following definitions of sacrifice and service: Sacrifice: “In the discipline of sacrifice, we abstain from the possession of enjoyment of what is necessary for our living — not as in frugality, from what is really to some degree superfluous anyway. The discipline of sacrifice is one in which we forsake the security of meeting our needs with what is in our hands. It is total abandonment to God, a stepping into the darkened abyss in the faith and hope that God will bear us up.” (Dallas Willard, The Spirit of the Disciplines)
Optional Opener: (15 minutes) Since the spiritual disciplines we are focusing on this week require action, consider starting your group this week with a relay. For supplies, you will need Band-Aids, two rolls of toilet paper, paper cups and a pitcher of water. Divide the group into two teams and have them stand in two lines at a designated starting line. At the other end, place a chair (preferably with a towel under it. Choose one person from each team to sit in the chair, where they will be “rescued.” At the word “Go!,” the first team member must run to his or her teammate in the chair, wrap the person’s head in toilet paper, stick him or her with two Band-Aids and give him or her a drink of water before helping that person back to the starting line. The “rescuer” must then take his or her turn as the “victim,” and so on, until everyone has been rescued. The team to finish first wins, of course!
Transition: Make the transition from the opener to the lesson by telling your group that the focus of this week’s lesson is sacrifice and service. Each of these disciplines requires action. Sacrifice requires us to intentionally do without something, while service requires us to purposefully engage in an activity for the benefit of another.
Interactive Learning: Ask your group members to share stories of times when they have been significantly helped by another person. Ask: • How did you feel when someone sacrificed something in order to help you? • What things might have easily prevented anyone from responding to your need? • How are sacrifice and service related?
Service: “In service we engage our goods and strength in the active promotion of the good of others and the causes of God in our world.” (Dallas Willard, The Spirit of the Disciplines) Read together Luke 10:33-37. Then ask the following questions: • Given the definitions that we read, how did the Samaritan demonstrate both service and sacrifice? • Doing grows out of being. What does this story tell you about the Samaritan’s nature? How many ways can you count that he demonstrated Christlike character? • How do you think this experience changed the injured man? How might it have transformed the Samaritan? • How have you experienced the transformation of sacrificial service? • How do we, as believers, go beyond making service an “add-on” in our lives, and making it our way of life? Close your group time by reading Philippians 2:1-11.
Challenge: Discuss with your group a way that you could serve someone together during the Lenten season. What might God put in the heart of your group to do?
Closing: Pray together that God would help you step out and actively show His love to others in very practical, extravagant ways. Pray for the people you will be serving (or have served).

If you enjoyed searching for the worship center symbols, try exploring Easter using the resurrection eggs. It is a set of one dozen plastic Easter eggs filled with symbols that help describe the Easter story. Use the accompanying guide to discuss the symbols as a family. What is sin? Who is Jesus Christ? Is the Bible reliable? Why was I created? Where am I heading in my relationship with God? What does Jesus have to do with it? Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Award Offered
T
he Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Northland’s Foundation for the Arts and Education is now accepting applications for the 2009 award. Completed application packets must be received by Friday, May 15 for consideration. Recipients will be notified by Friday, June 19. Northland News will provide bios of this year’s scholarship recipients in an upcoming issue. Access Ministries While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. These efforts are being led by Laura Lee Wright, Northland’s Access Ministries team leader (407-937-0549 or lauralee.wright@ northlandchurch.net). We can best accommodate your needs if you arrive early for service. Details: Congregational Services (407-949-4000 or congregational.services@ northlandchurch.net) Special Needs/Cry Room: It is located at the west end of the main foyer in room 4128. Parking: The front parking lot is reserved for those with special needs. Special Needs Seating: People with wheelchairs, walkers or other special needs have designated seating areas throughout the sanctuary if needed. Lyrics for Visually Impaired: Printed lyrics are located at the Welcome Center. Sunday School: Classes for children through fifth grade with special needs is on Sundays at 11 a.m. Buddy Breaks: With Nathaniel’s Hope, we offer respite for parents of kids with special needs. Check the Belong section in the Northland News for details. Assistance for Those With Hearing Loss: Signed worship service is Sundays, 9 a.m. Sound amplification aids are available at the Welcome Center.

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner.
