CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES VOLUNTEERS: CHANGE LIVES, LIVES CHANGED
B
When people accept the call to volunteer in Children’s Ministries, they come with an expectation to make a difference and change a young life. The surprise comes when their lives are the ones changed. We’ve collected some stories from some of our volunteers whose lives were changed by jumping in and serving God through His children. If God is calling you to serve in Children’s Ministries, whether you’re experienced or not, please know that God just might use this experience to change your life right along with those of the children you serve. We serve an average of 1,100 children each weekend here at Longwood. The need for volunteers continues to grow. If you would prayerfully consider teaching or assisting in the Children’s Ministries, even if it’s for the summer session, you will not only Doing My Heavenly Father’s Business: I am so very blessed by my association with the preschool Sunday school program. First, let me say I have had so many blessings in my life. I was raised in a loving Christian family and was taught about the importance of “doing my heavenly Father’s business.” I was taught that it was our responsibility to support our church with our tithes as well as our time. I started out teaching Sunday school about 24 years ago. As a single working mother, I tithed, but also struggled with finances. So I felt I needed to give my time to the church. Therefore, I started teachin g Sunday school and also supported other areas in the church. I have, in the past, worked with the homeless programs, the senior high program , women of the church and as preschool coordinator (so I know how hard it is to recruit, train and inspire teachers). It was very hard to be a single working mother and participate with all the other “church commitments.” But you know what I found out? That it was a blessing for me. The relationship with the church family was so very important, not only for me, but also for my daughter. I tried to instill in her the same values my parents had instilled in me. I felt it was important for her to see me work hard and still make time for our church family. Currently, I work seven days a week, eight to 12 hours a day, in banking, and do you know what? My business is great! Once again, I am very blessed. Coworkers have asked me what I do to have this amount of success, and I say, “I am very blessed. I will put my hands togethe r and look toward my heavenly Father.” One coworker said, “If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine!” God honors hard work. The children are so very precious! They are like little sponges. They listen to the Bible stories that have been prepared for us. We do a craft that also has been prepared for us. We then encourage them to go out and tell others what they have learned – armed with that Bible story and that craft. Wow! How great is that? All we really have to do is love them and invest our time. We are planting seeds, for their future as well as ours. They are our church’ s future. Anybody who says they don’t have time needs to make time to “do our heavenly Father’s business.” Your hard work will be blessed! God’s children need your help! – Amy Dunn

ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
.............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Meet the Man Behind The Shack By Marc Mcmurrin Executive Director of Operations
W
illiam Paul Young, author of the successful novel The Shack, will be at Northland at Longwood on Saturday, April 25 to talk about his book and answer any questions within the book. Please join him from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Shack is about a man whose daughter died tragically and how his world changed forever in his deepest time of sadness. The book teaches lessons about tragedy and triumph and will challenge how you look at life. William Paul Young was the eldest of four kids, born in 1955 in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, but he lived most of his first decade with his missionary parents in Netherlands New Guinea (West Papua), among the Dani. He graduated after attending 13 schools, then paid for Bible college working as a radio disc jockey, a lifeguard and an oil field worker in northern Alberta. He obtained his undergraduate degree in religion and graduated summa cum laude from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. There is so much more to his life, which he shares in The Shack in the characters Willie and Mack. He endured tremendous pain from adjustment to cultures, losses of life, shame and dreams destroyed. “The journey has been both incredible and unbearable, a desperate grasping after grace and wholeness,” he says. “I have finally figured out that I have nothing to lose by living a life of faith.”
Initially, The Shack, was intended only as a Christmas gift for Young’s six children and a handful of close friends. He printed just 15 copies of the book. Two of his close friends encouraged him to have it published and assisted with some editing and rewriting in order to prepare the manuscript for publication. Rejected by 26 religious and secular publishers, Young and his friends published the book in 2007 under the name of their newly created publishing company, Windblown Media. The company spent only $300 in advertising. Word-of-mouth referrals eventually drove the book to No. 1 on the New York Times trade paperback fiction best-seller list in June 2008. The Shack has taken the country by storm and has sold more than 6 million copies. Young states that The Shack is a metaphor for the places you get stuck, you get hurt, you get damaged ... the thing where shame or hurt is centered. This Christian fiction story has reached the hearts of millions, which makes you search yourself and the Trinity throughout this riveting story. It came to our attention that William Paul Young had –Wynonna a strong connection with Wynonna Judd last year when he spoke at Northland. Wynonna gave an endorsement on the back cover of his book saying, “Reading The Shack during a very difficult transition in my life, this story has blown the door wide open to my soul.” Knowing these two were friends and Northland’s good relationship with William Paul Young, we felt we had an opportunity to bring them both for the same weekend. Their agents were able to coordinate their busy calendars for a Wynonna performance on April 24 and a William Paul Young speaking engagement on April 25; A real one-two punch! William Paul Young will also be signing books in the foyer after the Wynonna concert. You do not want to miss this opportunity to see Wynonna and William Paul Young the weekend of April 24 and 25. To get tickets, go to Northland’s website (www.northlandchurch.net) and click “Events.”

New Bible Study: My Story, His Story
I
was an economics major in college. Two foundational classes that all economics majors had to take were microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics focuses on the market behavior of the individual family or company, while macroeconomics measures the economic activity on a national or regional level. We need to make a connection between the micro and the macro in order to properly understand what is taking shape in the economy. The same principle holds true in Christian spirituality. The work that God does in our individual lives is deeply connected to His work in the world and in history. To fully understand His plan for us, we must comprehend His plan for all of humanity. To this end, we announce the next Mount Dora small group Bible study: My Story, His Story. We will spend five evenings digging deep into the Scriptures to learn about God’s plan to redeem the world. We will pore over passages that deal with such topics as the worldwide spread of the Gospel, the role of the Spirit in salvation, the natural and spiritual forces that oppose us, and the Second Coming of our Lord. We will concentrate on Matthew chapters 24 and 25, but will consider a wide range of Scripture,
from Genesis to Revelation. Through this study, God will reveal His unfolding plan for humanity and the unique part that each of us has to play. We will truly see beautiful synergy of the micro and the macro. Your story folds neatly into God’s larger story. Your life is threaded into the larger tapestry of His world. If you want to know how you can be effective for Christ and His Kingdom, come and join us. All you need is your Bible and a hunger to learn. The details are below.
To fully understand His plan for us, we must comprehend His plan for all of humanity.

o read Colossians 3:14-15; Ephesians 4:4-7, 25; 1 Corinthians 10:17; 12:1227; and Romans 12:4-5. These are all references to our being a part of one body, His! He is the head, and we are the many parts that are under Him. There are references to husband and wife as well as the Christian community at large. If you are in Christ, then you are a part of His body. We are not a part of an individual faith here on earth; it is communal. The first people sent out to do the work of Christ were sent in pairs. We live it out together. We need each other. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 tells us two are better than one. Here are some photos from recent events and activities, life being lived out together in the Oviedo body. Enjoy! There are lots of ways we try to live out the Acts 2:42 church life of eating together, reading the Word, praying and sharing. If you would like to “be a part of it” and get more connected through small groups or serving opportunities, contact Amanda Hartley (amanda.hartley@northlandchurch.net) or me (jeremy.jobson@northlandchurch. net). To those of you doing so already, tell someone else about the power of participating; invite someone in to “be a part of it” with you! But Seriously …
O
THIS WEEK!
Sleepover
ver the past few months, we have had many infant baptisms and dedications at West Oaks. These babies, every one of them, are as precious as precious can get, especially to the eyes of God! We all agree with and affirm the parents as they say they will raise these children in homes that are focused on Christ. We stand with them and say we will support them as they do this. And we even say we will help teach and train their children as the church has been called to do. But seriously, how many of us are doing this? Yes, some of you are doing this, but many of us are caught up in the idea that they have enough teachers and helpers in the Children’s Ministries that they don’t need any more volunteers back there. Well, that is not true! As we have been growing over the past few months, so have the Children’s Ministries. There is a need for more volunteers even today. What is happening is that we have a handful of volunteers who are serving almost every weekend, and they are not able to worship with their church family on a regular basis. I would like to change that! If we can get everyone involved, it may mean you get to serve once every three months. I think all of us can do that! I would like the heart of the Children’s Ministries to come from
the heart of the congregation. And that heart comes from loving Christ with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. Jesus speaks very clearly about little children and how we are to be like them when it comes to the Kingdom of God. He says in Luke 18:16, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Pretty stern words, but also very encouraging words! I believe it is very easy to get caught up in our own children and what they see and believe about the Kingdom of God. But when we are able to get a picture of the Kingdom of God through the eyes of a 3-year-old, it changes everything. And you have that opportunity to not only see the Kingdom of God in this light, but you also have the opportunity to share with them how much God loves them and what He thinks about them. What a privilege we have been given to teach our children and the children in our community who God is and how much He loves them. But seriously, this means you have to do something today! There are so many places and ways you can serve in the Children’s Ministries. You can be a teacher, an assistant, a sound tech, a part of a setup team or another type of volunteer. And this also includes men! Usually, women volunteer, but I am here to say these little ones need to hear from and be cared for by our men as well. There really are many ways to get involved, so don’t wait for someone else to fill those spots. Sign up today, and be a blessing not only to the children, but also to the parents, who are looking for that kind of support for their family. Let’s be the church God has called us to be!
When we are able to get a picture of the Kingdom of God through the eyes of a 3-year-old, it changes everything.

Making History in Mumbai … Good History This Time By Mim Pain Executive Assistant to President/CEO of Development Associates International
Mim Pain is a Northland-supported missionary currently serving as the executive assistant to the president/CEO of Development Associates International (DAI), whose mission is to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of Christian leaders worldwide so that the church can fulfill its role in extending the Kingdom of God.
W
hen news of the vicious terror attacks in Mumbai’s busy business district appeared in my Google News Alert last November 26, I had an immediate personal concern. How was Anne, my new friend and mentee? Had business taken her to Mumbai’s harbor or possibly even to the Taj Mahal on this day of terror? Was her family safe? I e-mailed Anne immediately, and prayed. “Lord, surround Anne and her family with your protection, and please comfort all those in harm’s way during this horrific attack.” My travels around India several years ago now helped me to vividly picture the crush of people swarming around the bustling, now tragic, streets of Mumbai. In Delhi just a few months earlier, on February 28, 2008, Development Associates International made history of another kind. We joyfully celebrated our first graduation for Indian students who were receiving their master’s degrees in organizational management and Christian leadership. Eight of the nine graduates were surrounded by family, friends and professors gathered to mark this exciting occasion for DAI and our students. On this momentous day, even though I was 9,000 miles away, I was celebrating, too. My mentee, Anne, a nurse who had taught in her profession and served on the ministry staff of her church, was one of the nine graduates. Being from Mumbai, she sadly decided that she could not afford to miss several days of work to make the 800-mile trip north to Delhi in order to personally receive her degree. I first met Anne via e-mail in early 2007. All students in our master’s programs, no matter what country they are in, are assigned a DAI

thesis writing mentor to walk with them through this final, important project, which they must complete prior to graduating. Anne was assigned to me. Over the next nine months, we had the joy, and challenge, of working together long distance via e-mail. She would write and send copy, and I would critique, encourage, suggest and ask questions about her research and findings. Since I mostly heard from Anne on weekends, I thought she was extra busy during the week. Wanting to understand her world a little better, I asked, “Anne, would you tell me a bit about your life, family, work, etc., so I can better picture your world?” Her reply: “I recently became a single mother with two children, which meant we moved into another apartment. Just a few weeks ago, I signed up for a full-time job as a trainer for Business Process Outsourcing, and this will take me away from home for 13 hours each day, eight hours of work and five hours of travel. I leave home via rickshaw, then change trains three times, and finally ride a bus to get to my office. Same routine coming home at night, except at the last train station, my son picks me up on his motorbike to save me the long, tiring rickshaw ride home.” She continued to describe to me the importance of completing her master’s. “You know, Mim, the fact that I am this close to completing my master’s degree has been a great help in securing a new job so I can support my family. Of course, it helps me, too, with my discipling ministry at my church, which is the main reason I started this course three years ago. But God knew more about my future needs than I did. All praise to God!” – Anne For me, sitting in our DAI International Coordinating Office in Colorado Springs, serving alongside our ministry president, I have been deeply blessed to walk hand-in-hand with this remarkable Indian woman during her thesis writing. Anne and I still connect often! Just last week she wrote, saying, “Mim, even though we have never met, I know you care about me. So would you pray as I go into the hospital for surgery?” Of course, I did … and do … and will. Plus, she has just completed our professor training to be a facilitator in our master’s courses in India. The ripple effect of leadership continues, as now she will train and mentor new Indian master’s students. Thank you, Northland, for being truly generous toward me through your prayers and finances. Your support for my missionary work to help grow Christ’s Kingdom could only have happened because of your faithfulness. Incredibly, you first sent me out for missionary service in fall 1973 – nearly 36 years ago, when Northland was just over 20 people gathering on Sunday mornings in the library of a Maitland elementary school. Today, God is at work in Northland, through Northland and for Northland – and for me, through you.
“ God knew more about my future needs than I did. All praise to God!”

he exciting part about local serving is not only the people we meet or the other team members that we are serving with, but the opportunity to act out something that God wants of us. Action. He loves when we show action in our servant’s hearts. Check out many of the local serving teams who have made a difference over the past few months. Then, consider how you can serve. There are many options, lots of dates, and if you pray about where God is leading you to serve, I feel confident that He will tell you!

Answer: THE BODY OF CHRIST
THE CHURCH BELONGS TO JESUS Matthew 16:15-18 Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ. You are the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! No mere man showed this to you. My Father in heaven showed it to you. Here is what I tell you. You are Peter. On this rock I will build my church. The gates of hell will not be strong enough to destroy it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.” When we believe in Jesus, we belong to Him forever. That means we become a part of God’s forever family. Other names for God’s family are “the church,” “the body of Christ,” “Christians” and “the Kingdom of Heaven.”

quipping is a term that goes beyond education and training. As believers, we become better equipped for worship and service as a result of our experiences and relationships in life, as well as by our educational opportunities. At Northland, there are a variety of ways for adults to further their spiritual progress. Joining a group is a great way to connect in relationships that will both challenge and encourage you. But for all groups at Northland, there is a “so that.” Groups do not exist purely for the benefit of the members involved. Groups come together “so that” we can, together, be the church of Christ in the world. Groups exist for those who do not yet belong. Below are some of the types of groups available: Connection Groups: Connection Groups are ongoing groups that meet for friendship, worship, equipping and service. Some of these groups meet at a worship site, but most meet in homes across the community. While their locations, times and topics of study vary, the groups and their facilitators remain basically unchanged. Care Groups: These groups are a vital part of the health of the church, as they provide ongoing support through difficult times for specific life issues, such as addiction, divorce, illness or loss. Special Interest Groups: Coming together around a single activity or shared trait, these groups meet for specific events, ongoing study or ministry to the community. Service Groups: These groups come together for a single service project or an ongoing cause. You can find out more about these groups from Northland’s website (www.northlandchurch. net), from the Belong section in the back of this publication, or from the Connection Center at your worship site.

GOVERNING ELDERS
BELIEVE 16
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. Worship God today as our Father, from whom His whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name (Ephesians 3:15). Summary prayer: ................................................................................................................................................
Father, we pray that out of Your glorious riches, You would strengthen us with power through Your Spirit in our inner being, so that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. And we pray that being rooted and established in love, we may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:16-19).
