ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
.............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Accessing Northland’s Disabilities Ministry How You Can Serve Those With Special Needs BY LAURA LEE WRIGHT Access Ministries Team Leader
M
ore than a year ago, I was getting to know one of my volunteers. I asked her why she helped within Access Ministries, for people with disabilities, here at Northland. I was not prepared for her response. She shared with me that in a church she previously attended, there had been a child with significant special needs in the congregation. But unlike the rest of the kids, that child did not attend Sunday school. She approached the pastor and asked him if the child did not attend because she needed help. The pastor’s response was that child would not be going to heaven. The volunteer’s heart broke at the response! God began a work in her, leading her to believe that all people, including children with special needs, could hear the Gospel and have a personal friendship with Jesus! In Access Ministries, we continue to watch the children we serve begin personal journeys with their friend Jesus. Our volunteers are excited as our kids learn new attributes of our God. When asked a few months ago who Jesus is, one little girl said, “God!” This is poignant since this little lady is just developing her verbal skills. I will never forget the ear-to-ear grin on her face as she said,
Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
Good Friday ... and a Good Saturday, Too
O
“God!” with confidence. Maybe some of you watched as some of the children with special needs twirled their way into the sanctuary during the Palm Sunday processional, praising our King through movement. It’s all exciting stuff, and we can’t do any of this without the wonderful support of our volunteers. At Northland, we serve a young man who has autism, who is being raised by a single mom. This young man is strong and has a smile that will melt your heart. Because he does not do well in places with a great deal of stimulation, we often need fairly strong people to come in and work with him. As we begin to look toward the summer, many children will be transitioning into different grades, some from Early Childhood to grade school, and others from grade school to middle school. Transitions are sometimes difficult for our kids, but with love and several extra hands, we can help these transitions to be successful. Sometimes guiding a child to class is all that is needed.
making it difficult for people to find affordable, safe housing. During these difficult economic times, job and housing issues are even more difficult to overcome. Our Access team is beginning to partner with parents, advocates, agencies and governmental agencies to begin looking at housing options for people with disabilities. We know the obstacles are many, but we are ready to see these as opportunities for growth within the Christian body. Sometimes dealing with the trauma of having a disability is really tough! Last week, a 10-week support group began meeting on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in room 4204 at Northland at Longwood. The group will take a person or a caregiver from the wounds of disability to becoming a contributor to society. This group is open to anyone associated with disability and will challenge people where they are! To volunteer or to get more information, contact Laura Lee Wright, Access team leader (407-937-0549 or lauralee. wright@northlandchurch.net). >>> ACCESS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET
Beyond the Weekend … Beyond the weekend, our children and families need support. Northland assists families in partnership with Nathaniel’s Hope through Buddy Break, a three-hour respite at Northland once a month. We desire to expand this program to people’s homes or to be able to reach adults who are living at home. In terrific times, people with disabilities often are unemployed or underemployed, having the highest unemployment rates of any minority group in the world,
distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27). The Manfredis have been obedient to the Lord’s call to “look after orphans,” and Northlanders were obedient to His call to serve this family. This Northland team truly represented the body of Christ, as believers from different generations came together to do the work. Fifty-somethings served alongside fourth-graders. Middle schoolers worked with their parents. Cars were washed; bicycles were repaired. I even got to haul stuff to the dump in my pickup truck. (Men love to haul stuff in their trucks!) This event was one of many ways that Northlanders are partnering with The Carpenter’s House. If you would like to find out how God can use you at this or the many other serving venues in Mount Dora, drop me a note or call. I would love to connect you in your next steps of following Christ! Northlanders, I am proud of you!
n Good Friday, Northlanders remembered the death of Christ. On Sunday, we worshiped Him in His resurrection power. What happened on Saturday? We served! Nearly 30 >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET Northlanders from the Mount Dora and Longwood sites showed up on the day before Easter to serve at The Carpenter’s House for Children in Leesburg. Northlanders cut grass, trimmed bushes, spread mulch, potted flowers, folded laundry and cooked meals for this family of 19. Thirty years ago, Pat and Linda Manfredi committed to serve the Lord by providing a home for orphans with medical needs. We love the ministry they are doing in the lives of these kids, and we showed it by giving a little bit of our time and energy to support them in their calling from the Lord. James writes, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their Mount Dora youth washed cars at The Carpenter’s House workday.

Being an Extra
W
hat if I was to tell you that I am starring in a film? What if I told you stories about how amazing it was to be on the set, on location and a part of the crew? What if I invited you to this new film starring me, got you all pumped up about it, and gave you T-shirts, posters, even a plush toy and little figurine of me? Then opening day comes – the film is premiering, the movie begins, and you are on the edge of your seat, waiting to see me on the silver screen. And you wait, and you wait, and you wait. Two hours go by. The movie has been incredible, but it has not had me in it at all. Then I alert you that I am about to arrive. The scene happens, and a guy, the real star of the movie, is walking down a crowded New York City street, and I tell you that I am on the other side of the street, in the blue shirt behind the hot dog vendor. “See me right there? Hurry! Oh,” and into the hotel the main character steps. The scene is over, and I am gone. That lasted two seconds. I was lost in a sea of extras, out of focus, in the upper corner of the screen, and then I vanished. Now that would seem crazy to you, wouldn’t it? I mean, I told you the whole movie was starring me, I gave you a T-shirt and was so excited for you to see me that you would never have thought I was simply an extra, right? OK, now the hard part (analogy adapted from Crazy Love, by Francis Chan). I am not trying to be heretical or disrespectful, but the reality is we are all extras in an epic
film starring none of us. We often live our lives as though that were not true. We plow through our little, feeble, short existence (see James 4:14) and somehow conjure up grandiose images that make us central to, even the focus of, the story line. We are not; none of us are. I want that to linger in your mind for a second; don’t just keep on reading. Think about it. … It should cause some emotion, probably a bit of anger and anxiety. Who does this guy think he is? I am special. I own a company. I have a large family. I this, I that. Sorry, but it is true. We are a blip in space, in time and in the unfolding story of God! That is who the star is. That is who wrote, directed, developed, produced … In fact, He is the One who did and is everything. Not us, none of us, no matter how great or small you think you are. But don’t leave yet. … With much of God’s work, as I understand it in the Bible, there is almost always a paradox, and here it is no different. The movie is not about us; we occupy only a slice of a second in a casual scene as nothing more than an extra. But we are also told in the Word that, “God so loved us that He sent His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” We are also told that He knows every hair on our heads, and knit us in our mothers’ wombs. So it does involve us; we have been cast, like the extra, but that is it. In fact, in that role as an extra, we really have one function: to make the story line flow, to complement the star, and listen to and follow the direction of the one who cast us and is making the movie! The movie is all about Him, His creation, His plan, His purpose, His love and His Son, but He has cast you in it, and that should blow you away! We are cast into a specific role with a specific mission in mind. What is yours? The Westminster Larger Catechism’s first question asks, “What is the chief and highest end of man?” And the answer is simply stated, “The chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever.” We are to rejoice in our role, but never assume it is different than it is; remain faithful to the role we do have as extras in this epic film, passionately pursue Christ and display His Gospel in your life; and glorify Him as an extra in His epic film! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

A Reflection of Christ
J
esus is alive today, and that was reflected last weekend at our Fusion project, which incorporated 12 churches from the West Orange area and beyond. We had 17 projects and more than 150 people involved. What was absolutely beautiful was a picture of “The Church” coming together to serve the community. I had the opportunity to serve at a homebound woman’s home, where a group of us did yard work, cleaned floors and bathrooms, helped with little projects that needed to be done around her house, and made meals for her to keep in her freezer. Thanks to Joni Szrom for leading this team of people that worked fearlessly to get everything done that needed to be done for this precious woman. It was truly amazing to work with these people and serve with them as they focused on loving her unconditionally. As I talked with other team leaders, they all said the same thing: Everyone worked and served with a heart that reflected Christ. So I say thank you for being the church to our community. This is what I believe the church is to be about as we live our daily lives. I think it is easy to get caught up in what needs to happen at our homes or with our own personal stuff. But when we are able to look beyond ourselves and look at the needs of the people God has placed around us, and then do something about it, this reflects who Christ is to our community.
Some of you who served last Saturday know it doesn’t take much to help someone who has a need. Sometimes we think it will cost us something we don’t have right now. But the truth is, if you are willing to go, you will be blessed more, and receive more, than what you were able to give. It just takes looking beyond ourselves and being willing to go. Serving and giving are God things. Just look at when Jesus fed the thousands. He took what they had! And the people were satisfied, and they had plenty of leftovers! So God can use you and whatever it is that you have to offer to be a blessing to others. If you were not able to serve last weekend, look for opportunities in the future. We are trying to create opportunities to serve on a monthly basis, so there will be plenty of times for you to plug in. Little Hands, Big Difference
W
hile many opportunities exist for children and their families to serve, some of the most exciting are the Little Hands projects here at Northland. Once a month, a service project is designed for kids age 10 and under to learn how to serve together by making, creating, pasting, gathering and in some way serving another ministry partner by spending the morning working on a project to meet a particular need in the ministry. This month, more than 30 children joined in collecting more than 300 cans of food for a local partner in Apopka. Loaves & Fishes was happy to receive this gift from the heart! Along with that project, the kids created more than 45 place mats, which were delivered to Pathways to Care for its Easter dinner. Pathways to Care is a ministry partner that has transitional housing for those in need coming out of the hospital. Great job, Little Hands! We encourage you to continue serving others with the wonderful gift you are giving on one Saturday a month! To preview all the projects listed, and age-appropriate projects, visit the Northland website (instructions at bottom of this column) and find the project that is right for you and/or your family!

Answer: THE WORD OF GOD
THE WORD OF GOD John 1:14; John 8:31-32 God has always had a way of speaking to us. In Bible times, the prophets spoke His words to the people. The Holy Spirit helped people write down God’s words into the Bible, which is also called “the Word of God.” Two thousand years ago, the Word of God became a person; His name is Jesus. He made His home with us. We have seen His glory–His goodness. It is the glory of the one and only Son. He came from the Father. And He was full of grace and truth. Jesus spoke to the Jewish people who had believed Him. “If you obey My teaching,” He said, “you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth. And the truth will set you free.” When we obey His teaching, we really learn the truth about how much God loves us.

Connection Group Resources By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development
C
onnection Groups at Northland are vital to the equipping process. Most of these groups gather in homes around the area as a way of including friends and neighbors who might not come to a church building, but who are interested enough in relationship to participate. These groups are great examples of what it means to be sent into the community to take the love of Christ. While these groups are encouraged to participate in new Equipping courses as they are launched, an amazing collection of resources is available for their use. These studies provide an easy format for group leaders to follow and allow for a broad range of topics. Group resources are available from many writers: Philip Yancey, John Piper, Rick Warren, Beth Moore, Andy Stanley, Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, Donald Miller, Chuck Colson and others. Below are a few highlighted group study tools: The Vision of His Glory: Finding Hope Through the Revelation of Jesus Christ, by Anne Graham Lotz (seven weeks, workbook plus video). This study provides for a fresh, personal encounter with Jesus Christ, revealing the vastness of God’s boundless love and enduring mercy. The study

quipping is a term that goes beyond education and training. As believers, we become better equipped for worship and service as a result of our experiences and relationships in life, as well as by our educational opportunities. At Northland, there are a variety of ways for adults to further their spiritual progress. Joining a group is a great way to connect in relationships that will both challenge and encourage you. But for all groups at Northland, there is a “so that.” Groups do not exist purely for the benefit of the members involved. Groups come together “so that” we can, together, be the church of Christ in the world. Groups exist for those who do not yet belong. Below are some of the types of groups available: Connection Groups: Meet for friendship, worship, equipping and service. Some of these groups meet at a worship site, but most meet in homes across the community. Locations, times and topics of study vary, but the groups and their facilitators remain basically unchanged. Care Groups: Provide ongoing support through difficult times for specific life issues, such as addiction, divorce, illness or loss. Special Interest Groups: Come together around a single activity or shared trait, and meet for specific events, ongoing study or ministry to the community. Service Groups: Come together for a single service project or an ongoing cause.
begins with a practical and powerful Bible study workshop. The following six sessions are based on the message of hope found in the book of Revelation and correspond to the video presentations. When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box, by John Ortberg (six-week DVD plus workbook). Using popular games as a metaphor for our temporal lives, this DVD curriculum neatly sorts out what’s fleeting and what’s permanent in God’s Kingdom. Being master of the board is not the point; being rich toward God is. Winning the game of life on Earth is a temporary victory; loving God and other people with all our hearts is an eternal one. “NOOMA” (a collection of 10-minute films), by Rob Bell. NOOMA is a new format for spiritual direction. Its short films touch on issues that we care about, that we want to talk about, and that are relevant to our world. Bundle #1 Rain: Maybe God is actually closer to us than we think. Flame: What it means to give yourself to someone else. Trees: How our religion is relevant to this life. Sunday: God hates it when we call ourselves Christians, but ignore all the things He really cares about. Bundle #2 Noise: Why is silence so hard to deal with? If God sometimes feels distant to us, maybe it’s not because he’s not talking to us, but simply because we aren’t really listening.
Kickball: It’s easy to want what’s right in front of us, but maybe God knows what’s better for us, and sometimes we just can’t see it. Luggage: About forgiveness. Dust: Believing in God is important, but what about God’s believing in us? Bundle #3 Bullhorn: Maybe the best way for us to show our love for God is actually by loving other people no matter how hard it sometimes is. Lump: God loves us; He always has and always will, and there’s nothing we can do to change that. Rhythm: What does it mean to have a relationship with God? Maybe the way we live every day, every single choice we make, determines how in tune with God we are. Matthew: Suffering the loss of someone we love can be the most difficult thing in life to deal with. Bundle #4 Rich: Maybe God has blessed us with everything we have so we can bless and give to others. Breathe: With everything that we’ve got going on every day, how many of us ever think about our breathing, about the meaning of breathing? You: Maybe we don’t always put enough emphasis on the things that truly should matter in our lives. Sotre: We all get angry about things from time to time – but what is really at its root? Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Steve Brown, president of Key Life Network
Our preacher this weekend is Dr. Steve Brown, president of Key Life Network, a Christian radio network. Key Life’s 15-minute daily radio broadcast, as well as the one-minute “Think Spots,” are heard throughout the United States, Canada and internationally, featuring the Bible teaching of Dr. Brown. In addition to the radio programs, Key Life also offers cassette tapes, CDs and publications that teach and help listeners grow in the knowledge of God, producing life-changing results. “What makes this program unique,” according to its website (www.keylife.org), “is Steve’s humor, illustrations and practical application of Scripture, all with the focus on our freedom in Christ.” Dr. Brown also is a seminary professor and author. He previously served as a pastor for more than 25 years and now devotes much of his time to the radio broadcast. Dr. Brown has a variety of experiences and a unique perspective on life, but refuses to be a “guru.” He gives, in his teaching, the freedom to think. Overall, Steve has become known for his refreshing and practical biblical applications. Currently, Dr. Brown is serving as a professor of preaching at Reformed Theological Seminary in Oviedo. He sits on the board of the National Religious Broadcasters and Harvest USA and is the author of several books, including Born Free, When Being Good Isn’t Good Enough and When Your Rope Breaks. His articles appear in such magazines and journals as Leadership, Decision, Plain Truth and Today’s Christian Woman. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. BROWN, VISIT WWW.KEYLIFE.ORG.
