Conversations Women’s Gathering Set for May 8 By Lauren Geiger Conversations Team

t’s amazing what begins with a simple conversation. Conversations, a series of gatherings for women, first came about during a casual conversation between friends over lunch at Nature’s Table café, where the question “What if …?” gradually led to months of planning about new ways to encourage and connect the women of Northland. After a successful kickoff event in January, featuring a talk by Becky Hunter, the next Conversations event is set for Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Rink. The featured speaker is Michelle Alexander of the Northland worship team. “It has been so exciting to watch what God is doing at Northland, especially among the women of our church,” said Kristen Alderman, a participant in the initial lunch conversation. “Our desire is to plan gatherings where women can get to know one another, worship together, and hopefully find encouragement in the stories that are shared.” Personal stories play a big role in Conversations. “These gatherings are meant for more than just coming and listening to a speaker, which is why we allot 30

Missional Suffering

an we suffer if we know that God will bring a greater good out of it? Scripture demonstrates that God permits suffering in the lives of believers so that we will become more like Christ. It also reveals that God uses pain to bring unbelievers into eternal relationship with Him. If those two concepts are true (and they are!), then we can rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that God is bringing about a greater good in our lives and in the lives of people in our circles of influence. With this great encouragement, we can suffer missionally. You see, God is a missionary God, and every day, He invites His children (that would be us) along on His mission. We can join Him in His mission to reach a world that “waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed” (Romans 8:19). This weekend’s sermon in Mount Dora is about just that. The primary text we will use is Romans 8:15-25. We will also consider Scriptures such as Mark 11:13, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 and 1 John 3:1-3. I pray that God applies His Word to our hearts so we will become missional in all of our ways!

Hospice of the Comforter

(a Northland-supported organization) Organization Meets Needs Through Volunteers Like You By Desmond Jordon

ot only is Northlandsupported Hospice of the Comforter a place that offers resources and help to you and your loved ones during your time of need, it is a place through which you have an opportunity to make a difference for God’s Kingdom. Founded in 1990, Hospice of the Comforter is the only nonprofit community-based hospice serving patients facing incurable illnesses in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. Hospice of the Comforter is driven by its mission statement: “We are compassionate people providing compassionate care. We are guided by the highest ethical principles while expertly caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families facing an incurable illness.” What Hospice Provides Hospice of the Comforter’s free services to the community include expert hospice care, educational resources and grief support. Those who receive care live in their homes, assisted living facilities and longterm care facilities. The costs of hospice care are covered under Medicare, Medicaid and/or private insurance, and Hospice of the Comforter will never turn away a patient for his or her inability to pay. Hospice of the Comforter team members work to provide individualized care for patients and their loved ones. Patients receive pain and symptom management related to their illness to help ensure a higher quality of life. Caregivers benefit from education and support, including a licensed nurse who is available by telephone 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer questions and provide support. Also, the setup and delivery of medications, medical equipment and supplies related to the hospice diagnosis are provided at no cost.

Also, educational resources, such as speakers or resource materials about end-of-life issues, are available to the community. Hospice of the Comforter offers extensive grief-support programs to anyone who has experienced a loss, regardless of whether he or she used hospice services. Family, friends and community members have access to grief support at no cost, whether they are seeking individual counseling, support groups or access to resources. The organization also offers a children’s program that provides grief support in schools to children who have experienced the loss of a loved one. How You Can Help Not only is the emotional, physical and spiritual support provided by doctors, nurses, chaplains, hospice-certified nursing assistants, counselors and social workers, but also by trained volunteers. You can make a difference for God’s Kingdom through this organization in many ways, from interacting with patients and families during their difficult time, to sharing God’s love and His many promises with them, to doing administrative work in the organization’s offices. Specific serving opportunities at Hospice include: - Respite for caregivers - Companionship and friendly support to patients and families, as well as bereavement support to surviving loved ones - Eleventh-hour support during the last 48-72 hours of life - Visitation to patients at home or in facilities - Gardening and landscaping projects - Clerical support and data entry for virtually every department - Telephone support and administrative help - Much more! Make ’m Smile Celebrates Kids With Special Needs

ake ’m Smile is a community festival that celebrates kids with special needs (we call them VIP kids) and their families. It features a Buddy Stroll, in which VIP families are “buddied up” with people from around the community for a stroll around Lake Eola. Enjoy free food, entertainment, prizes and a chance to visit exhibitors that service the special needs community. This year’s event is Saturday, June 6. Buddies are needed to volunteer on this day. The Bible is God’s Word. It shows us the truth about who God is and what He has done. It shows us what God wants us to do. But it also shows us the truth about God’s heart. When the Word became flesh, Jesus left heaven and came to live with us. Through Him, we saw God’s glory—His greatness. But when we think about the reason God sent His Son to us, then we truly see God’s heart and His love for us. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. That’s love. If you want to know how much God loves you, read John 3:16.

What Is Equipping, Anyway? By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development

hat do you think of when you hear the word “equipping”? Webster’s Dictionary defines it this way: 1. to provide somebody or something with necessities 2. to prepare somebody to accomplish something So when thought of in terms of your spiritual journey, there is a lot the church has to do with equipping. The leadership at Northland wants to be certain that you have everything you need in order to accomplish the good works that God has prepared in advance for you to do (Ephesians 2:10), in order for you to worship and serve God. It is the leadership’s desire to provide you with whatever is necessary for you to come to maturity in Christ.

One way for you to take advantage of the opportunities and provisions at Northland and around the believing community is to go through the Belong, Believe, Become and Be Sent sections in the back of this paper. Each section provides a unique type of opportunity to Belong, Believe, Become or Be Sent. The Belong section lists opportunities to join ongoing Connection Groups. These may be service groups, care groups or special interest groups. They meet in various places and at various times throughout the community. The Believe section lists opportunities for Bible study, prayer and baptism. The Become section lists classes with specific start and stop dates. Many of them take place at one of Northland’s worship sites. The Be Sent section lists opportunities to serve around the world. Service is an important part of the equipping process. We learn as we see God work through us in the lives of others, and as we see Him work in us through those we serve. Take some time this week to see what is available to you as the next step in your spiritual journey.

ou may have noticed all the ads in the back section of this paper from time to time as you thumb through. It is a bit like the classified section of the local paper. Perhaps you have never thought of that section as having much to do with equipping, but it has everything to do with equipping, as all the current options are listed there. Belong section: Opportunities for group participation are listed here. Joining a group is a great way to connect in relationships that will both challenge and encourage you. But for all groups at Northland, there is a “so that.” Groups do not exist purely for the benefit of the members involved. Groups come together “so that” we can, together, be the church of Christ in the world. Groups exist for those who do not yet belong. Believe section: Opportunities for Bible studies, prayer groups and baptism can be found in this section. Become section: All the information for choosing a class can be found here, as well as current training opportunities to help you learn to worship and serve. Be Sent section: Find opportunities to serve your local community, along with all the details and contact info, here. Beyond section: Opportunities in the greater Orlando area are listed. Take advantage of some of these, and see what God does in and through your life!

CLASS SPOTLIGHT: Romans Bible Study

heology is nothing more than the study of God’s story. It is through His story that we come to know Him and can worship Him for who He says He is and what He says He has done. The book of Romans is perhaps the most concise theological work in the New Testament. If you are looking for a learning opportunity this year that is the perfect counterpart to Pastor Hunter’s applied apologetics series, consider attending the Romans class, offered by Pastor Dan Lacich on Sundays at 9 a.m. For more information about the class, see page 12.

Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Award Offered

he Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Northland’s Foundation for the Arts and Education is now accepting applications for the 2009 award. Completed application packets must be received by Friday, May 15 for consideration. Recipients will be notified by Friday, June 19. Northland News will provide bios of this year’s scholarship recipients in an upcoming issue. LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you.
