Rich Mullins: Always an Inspiration

ver the past 20 or so years, Pastor Vernon Rainwater has been a blessing to us in many ways. Hairdresser is not one of them. But for Rich Mullins, a Christian singer/songwriter known for his songs “Awesome God” and “Step by Step,” it would have been just fine. In fact, in their sole encounter about 20 years ago, in the green room before an event where Rich Mullins was to sing and Vernon was to speak, the musician asked Vernon, “Do you think I should have gotten a haircut?” then proceeded to ask Vernon to cut his hair. That was a perfect example of Rich Mullins’ humility, says Vernon, who kindly told him he thought that having him cut his hair might be a mistake. So, “He found some scissors and went into the bathroom and whacked off his hair. The thing that struck me was how little he focused on himself. He was a selfless guy and an Our friend, Rich Mullins. amazing performer.” As talented and well-known as this musician was, his life was never really about him. It was about God, and being honest before God. “Despite all his success, music was more something that enabled him to love people,” Vernon says. And it showed in everything he did – or didn’t do, like wear shoes. Vernon notes, “He’d sometimes show up in concerts barefoot to keep people from putting him on a pedestal.” He’d also confess his

sins in front of an audience as if to say, “Don’t put me up on a pedestal here; I’m just a guy,” Vernon says, adding, “he really did have an unusual perspective on what it meant to follow Christ.” With seven successful Christian albums and 12 Dove awards, he lived simply and gave proceeds from his albums to church. In 1995, he moved to a Navajo reservation in Arizona to teach music to children. And he felt that it was OK to ask God questions and be honest in his relationship with Him. Tragically, he died in an automobile accident in September 1997 at age 41 on his way to a benefit concert in Kansas. But while Rich Mullins is no longer on this earth, we still all can learn a lot from him and how he lived his life: for Jesus. This weekend, Vernon is performing the song “Hard to Get,” written by Rich Mullins. The song reveals his honesty before God, which, Vernon says, is something that when practiced can strengthen our faith. “Rich Mullins was one of the guys not afraid to take the really hard questions to God, trusting God with the hard questions. That’s one of the things about him that I really admire,” Vernon says. “He didn’t feel like he had to figure it out by the end of the song – he was trusting God to figure out how to get him where he needed to be. “Rich was a huge inspiration in my life.” As we enter into a new sermon series, “Challenges to Christianity,” let us allow our skepticism to lead us to God for answers and help us grow more mature in our faith. Let us be a fraction of the inspiration that Rich Mullins was to all whose lives he touched, and show others what an “awesome God” we serve. — Melissa Bogdany

However little or much of the picture you can see, believe me when I say that God wants to use your life to bring great blessings to you and to those around you. The Bible tells us that we are “living stones ... being built into a spiritual house” by Christ (1 Peter 2:5, NIV). Every stone is necessary to build the house. Each one is important. Notice as well how the stones touch each other. Touch others! Open up and allow the Holy Spirit to direct you to a Northland Bible study. We have several in Mount Dora. n just 24 hours, two conversations with Mount Dora Northlanders reminded me of something very important. Several people in this circle were inspired independently at the same time by the same Holy Spirit. They eventually came together in a symphony of service that took this home for orphaned children to the next level in its calling from God. Each person and every family plays a part, and the Holy Spirit is the Orchestrator of it all. A second conversation confirmed the first. A Northland man ministers to a coworker reeling from the death of a child and the divorce it produced. He is pointing the man toward Jesus. Now God brings a couple into the picture, one that also has lost a child, but labors to preserve the marriage. Both look to our Northlander for encouragement. Pray for Jacob and Melissa Hancock, who have answered the call to be They don’t know each other, but are connected missionaries to India.

Living a Missional Life, Part 2 International Outreach JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
L
ast weekend we launched into a monthlong journey of rediscovering what it looks like to live a life with mission, a missional life. My sermon focused on a few key verses that described the mission of God as the redemption of His creation through His Son’s work and the fact that we have been invited into that work with Him. It is happening all around us, and we are called by Christ for no other purpose. We heard the simplicity of the command: “Repent and be baptized … follow me … with the power of the Holy Spirit … teach them to obey all that I have commanded … make disciples of them …” “Disciple” simply means “learner,” so we talked about being constant learners of Christ, following Him, being transformed into his likeness, entering into His mission more and more. We remembered that love is the key to obeying all He commanded, and it is the way they will know we are His. Then we met in the courtyard, ate and fellowshiped with each other. We talked about the application of this in our lives, we saw that at work in the Children’s and Student Ministries, and we met two couples who have responded to that call in a very tangible and radical way, by being long-term overseas missionaries. Awesome! Then on Wednesday night, many of us gathered just to worship God for who He is and what He has done in our lives, our church, our community and the world. It was tremendous and won’t be the last time we do it! Check out photos on our Facebook page and the blog! This weekend we shift our foyer focus onto the international outreach aspect of living a missional
life with two ministries near and dear to our family’s heart. One, Compassion International (www.compassion.com), is an incredible ministry reaching children all over the world with the Gospel by meeting real needs right now. Says Compassion’s website: “Sponsoring children in need is breaking the cycle of poverty. Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.” Compassion, founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education, health care and Christian training. Today, the organization helps more than 1 million children in 25 countries. With This Ring (www.withthisring.org) is another unbelievable ministry laid on the heart of a woman from California, Ali Eastburn, who came and shared her story with us about six months ago. With This Ring uses money from the sale of merchandise and jewelry to build wells in villages in Africa that do not have clean water. “This is loving others as ourselves,” according to the ministry’s website. “We still have 19 more wells to go. That’s $180,000 to save the lives of 30,000 people in Yendi. That’s $6 a life—the cost of a latte and a cookie! We take to heart the command of Jesus when He says that we should sell our possessions and give the money to the poor. We believe that if we can learn to give radically, we can literally change the world for Jesus. Together! There is no greater gift than standing hand in hand with an African child when the welldrilling rig hits water. But the real beauty is this. When that child looks me in the eyes and asks why I’m doing this, I get to say, ‘Because there are people in the world who love you so much they’re willing to sell their wedding rings to give you clean water. And you know where that kind of love comes from? It comes from Jesus Himself, who died on the cross so you could live. That’s the power of love we have in Christ.” Please stop by the Living a Missional Life table and learn more about ways you can partner with international outreach agencies that are doing the work of Christ here and now. being at every event they had (and having four daughters can be very tricky, but they knew their mom was going to be there). And even to this day, sitting on the bed and listening to them after they had a bad day or when they are struggling with their friends (boys and girls!). I am so amazed when I see this from a dad’s perspective, and I am grateful my daughters have the mom they have. I am certain many of you have seen or experienced the same things from your mothers and/or wives. So to all you mothers, thank you for giving your lives away to your children. You reflect who Jesus was and is in so many

Are you so obsessed with overwhelming your mom with blessings that you have been thinking about this day for a long time, or do you feel like it is an Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live obligation for you to do something for your mom? 5-Day Opportunity to Be the Church Help Incoming Teams Serve Local Families vanessa puleo Northland Local Service Projects Coordinator
A
n amazing five-day opportunity to be a local servant is available to individuals, couples or parents with a teen in June. Northland is looking for 100 servant coordinators for the week of June 21 to 26 to serve locally and join the One Heart, Many Hands organization in its efforts to mobilize more than 3,000 volunteers on 160 local needs. Volunteers will come from all across the United States and even from other countries to participate. These volunteers will come to the Orlando area to serve and work on more than 160 local families’ homes – and you have the opportunity to be their “local contact.” You will have the opportunity to connect with local families in need, build a relationship and even talk to them about serving others! This organization obtained referrals from Orange County or the city of Orlando. The organization sat down with both Mayor Crotty and Mayor Dyer and asked them what they could do to serve the community, and they have given us a list of projects. The homeowners who were referred are homeowners that they have already identified as needing help, but at this time, they have no means of helping. The end result of these visits will be a priority list of repairs, a detailed list of those repairs and a list of materials needed to complete those repairs. Most of the materials will be purchased in advance and stored in a warehouse (but as with any project, small or large, we will always need to make a trip or two to the hardware store). A servant coordinator serves the homeowner and the team assigned to that particular project. The coordinator is not the “boss,” but someone there to serve. This person meets the homeowner before the team arrives on site, coordinates the transportation of the materials for the project from the warehouse to the project site, and serves the team by giving team members guidance as to the priorities of project, purchasing miscellaneous materials needed to complete the job (resources will be available to purchase needed supplies), and helping the team to build relationships with the homeowner.
What is the time commitment? Before the project: • Meet and get to know the homeowner and the project. • Deliver project materials to the project site. During the project: • June 21: Meet with your assigned team leader and attend kickoff rally. • June 22-26: Serve at project site full days and a half day on Friday. The project concludes at noon Friday with a community picnic for all volunteers, homeowners and community partners. PLEASE NOTE: This is a five-day project, good for those retired, off work or wanting to take off work for a trip locally.
What are the qualifications? • A willing heart to serve others. • The ability to commit to the timeline. • The ability to either transport or coordinate the transportation of materials to the project site. • A good spirit and a willingness to communicate well with others. • The ability to meet with the homeowner prior to the project to build a relationship. • The ability to communicate with team members prior to their arrival in Orlando.

Class Participants Gaining Financial Peace
Relevant Reads for Mothers …
F
inancial Peace University is making its presence known around the Northland at Longwood community. Over the last few weeks, 26 households have tackled their financial issues using biblical principles. At the beginning of the teaching series, their debt totaled $1,026,500. Together they have done everything from cut up credit cards to hold garage sales. Below are some testimonials from class members: … FPU has been a wonderful experience for (my wife and I). We have gone to a zero-based budget. We are using cash for all that we can. We got motivated to pay off my car. And it has encouraged more communication regarding finances and in a way that productively engages both of us. … Before the class, it was like we were throwing away money, and had nothing to show for it. Moving to the cash envelope system – one of Dave’s suggestions – has made the money last longer than we could have imagined. Not only that, we have $1,000 in an emergency fund. At the beginning of the class, we only had $40 in savings and were being charged $5 a month for not having more. We have also paid off and cut up one credit card and paid a smaller debt. … Financial Peace University has brought a tremendous amount of awareness to my financial life, and everything I spend money on has been or is being scrutinized. I am taking this class because I plan to leave the corporate world and a six-figure income to go back to school for a master’s in Oriental medicine. This will be a three-year program, and while I only have two debts (my car and my home), I want to learn how to be a good steward of the blessings I have. As a result of this class, I will be selling my Lincoln MKX and looking to purchase my first used vehicle ever, a Toyota Corolla. This will eliminate $711 in monthly car payments, as I will pay cash. I also have reduced my monthly expenses by $1,400 since beginning this class in January. This should be a required course for all students as well as all couples as they contemplate marriage.

For the first time, my husband and I are on the same page financially. In just a few short weeks, we have already paid off one credit card and are almost complete on our second card. We now have an emergency fund in place for the first time since we got married. With our online budget tool, we now have a plan for every dollar of our income. This is so empowering. This program has given us tangible hope for a better future. We both have really enjoyed the class and video format. The CDs and follow-along workbook help keep us focused on the class material. The online tools are awesome, easy to understand and easy to use. … My wife and I were married 11 months ago. I can’t tell you how much we enjoy being married. It’s amazing! I’m sure everyone experiences the new expenses we encountered when we got home from the wedding. A new apartment needs furniture, wedding bills catch up, and, oh yeah, we still have to eat. Neither of us had ever carried balances on our credit cards, but we knew what we were getting into when we purchased and had a plan to budget our spending and pay off our debt. It took a few months and a lot of adjusting, but in the month of September, we were able to put over $6,000 toward credit card debt! On September 19, I was also diagnosed with stage 2B Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Three weeks later, I started chemotherapy, and our efforts to fight debt were abandoned in search of remission. It gets a little worse before it gets better. In December, my wife was part of a large companywide layoff, and it was difficult for me to work on our rental renovation projects between chemo treatments that were every two weeks. Fast forward. I finished my last chemo treatment very recently. The cancer is gone. (Praise God!) My wife is already working in a new job she loves. The medical insurance she provided through her old job carried me all the way through treatment and into the new company insurance. We were able to spend most of my treatment together and travel, to Canada for a family Christmas ski trip, to North Carolina to visit friends, hike and mountain climb, and to the Bahamas on a fishing trip with my dad and my three brothers. And her last paycheck came the day she was hired with her new company. When you asked us why we were attending FPU at the first class, we said because we wanted to learn how to communicate better about finances and build a financial framework for our home. That is still our focus. The numbers will follow, but they aren’t as important as they used to be. Learning how to understand each other and build a strong marriage is the real reward of this course. Thank you so much, Rich and Jana. This class is amazing, and we really appreciate all the effort you put into it.

LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you. Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner.
