“The picture of God in the Bible is of One who suffers, and when the mask is torn off life and we see all its profound and vast misery, the suffering, sorrowing God is the only One who does not mock us. ‘He was despised, and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.’ ” – Oswald Chambers NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
.............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Resolving Conflict Biblically
Come to the June 1 Informational Meeting
W
e all experience conflict in our lives, whether at work, home, church, even the grocery store, and how we choose to respond to it can significantly impact our lives and the lives of those around us. Therefore, Peacemaker Ministries exists to help us respond to conflict in a biblical manner. Northland’s peacemaking team, called PeaceSeekers, is holding an informational meeting June 1 to answer questions and tell you more about classes, coaching and mediation services. What is Central Florida Peacemaker Network? CFPN is a voluntary association of representatives of local Christian churches, including Northland, who are dedicated to helping to build a Bible-based “culture of peace” in Central Florida. The network has been meeting for several months, and is organizing to become a resource center, offering biblically based educational, coaching, mediation and arbitration services to resolve conflicts within churches, businesses, schools and colleges, and with individuals. CFPN has adopted the educational and training materials created by Peacemaker Ministries and the Institute for Christian Conciliation. Their website, www.peacemaker.net, is full of advice on handling conflict, lists training opportunities and includes an online bookstore.

Peacemaker Stories The PeaceSeekers team at Northland had been teaching the Peacemaker seminar for several weeks. After each session, a few people always stayed after class to ask questions. One man consistently came up to one of the instructors (an attorney), asking questions about how to live out the biblical principles he was learning. After one particular class, he again approached the attorney instructor, this time with a sense of urgency. He said, “I’ve been going through a divorce.
Tomorrow morning I have to go to the final mediation – is there any way I can stop it? I need to talk to my wife. I don’t want this divorce; I want a chance to work it out.” The instructor said, “Go to mediation early, ask your attorney to talk to the other attorney and the mediator, telling that attorney you don’t want to go through with the divorce and you want a chance to talk to your wife about making the marriage work.” The demeanor of the inquiring man changed, and he had a new look of hope. He said he would go early and give it a try. Two Sundays later, at the evening service, Pastor Rainwater asked for testimonies of our Lord working in our lives. The same man who had been inquiring stood up. Sitting beside him was a woman about his age. He said that his marriage had been virtually destroyed, but he had his faith and hope restored by listening to biblical peacemaking principles. He had been given an opportunity to speak to his wife about putting their faith in Christ, and living their lives, their marriage, according to God’s will and not theirs. Though there were many issues to work through, he was going to continue to lead his family to follow Christ. Among the many joyful hearts and tearful eyes present was the attorney who had the privilege of sharing God’s Word. When we humble ourselves before God and accept His agenda for our lives, rather than our own, the possibilities are endless! Dealing With a Reluctant Peacemaker Why is it so much easier to sit through a Peacemaker seminar or small group Bible study and learn the biblical principles for reconciliation than to go put the principles into practice? Fear of man, fear of failure, gripping onto our own way of handling things, and a desire to win are frequent reasons given for not following through, but all reveal idols of our hearts. When coaching an individual in conflict, emphasizing using this opportunity to serve the other person cannot be overstated. We as Christians have developed a “learned response” to pretend a conflict doesn’t exist, smile when seen, and avoid the person or situation at all costs. We pretend that
this equates to “peace” because there is no yelling and an absence of aggressive, negative behavior. Instead, we talk to friends and others who will listen, justifying our own words and actions, while vilifying the other party, and building an alliance to support us. Peacemaker coaches have their work cut out for them, uncovering the heart issues, addressing them with appropriate Scripture, seeking confession and forgiveness. But what about the one who won’t go to the other party? The application of the Gospel is a powerful tool to help overcome reluctance. Once it is understood that approaching the other party in conflict is an act of service, of Christ’s love, the courage and motivation can be found. The same love, the same passion that Christ so vividly demonstrated to us on the cross to reconcile us to God is what motivates us to help our brothers and sisters. What cost would be too high for me in comparison with what Christ paid for me? Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40). It is in the light of Christ’s love that we can reflect Him to others. If we love our brother or sister, we do not want to see him or her caught up in sin, but want him or her to be reconciled to God and to others. If we know sin leads to one’s destruction, it is a heart of godly love that spurs us on to point out another’s shortfalls with gentleness and kindness. The next time you deal with someone refusing or even reluctant to go to the other party, go over the Gospel message, and encourage the God-honoring response and next step. Learn More! You are invited to attend the PeaceSeekers informational meeting Monday, June 1 at 6 p.m. at Northland at Longwood, room 4213. PeaceSeekers will be available to answer questions concerning personalized services to help individuals, ministries and businesses resolve conflict using tried and true biblical principles. Details: Richard Arndt (407-221-8955) In addition, the Women in Conflict Peacemaking Support Group meets Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Gonzalez home. id your mail carrier ask for donations for the U.S. Postal Service Food Drive? Do you wonder where all that food went? More than 24,000 pounds of food was received by Loaves & Fishes, a ministry in Apopka. And several families from Northland at Mount Dora went over to help them sort it all out! We worked throughout the morning hours sorting hundreds of bags and boxes of food >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET items that soon would be going home with needy families in our community. Loaves & Fishes serves more than 600 families per week, providing food, clothing, spiritual care and life skill training. Every guest is treated as Jesus would do, with dignity, respect and love. Their motto comes straight from Scripture: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me ...” (Matthew 25:35-36). For more than two decades, these dedicated Christians have been showing the love of Christ to the hungry and thirsty of our community. The Mount Dora congregation of Northland is honored to stand with them in their calling from the Lord. In addition to periodic Helping Hands workdays, the Mount Dora congregation Isaac, Britton, Gracey, Mackenzie and Danny serve the Lord together.

Living a Missional Life, Part 4
Local Outreach (Work of Christ’s Mission) JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
O
ur goal this month is to present you with as many opportunities as possible to live out the call to be on mission with Christ, to live a missional life, doing what you can with what you’ve got, where you are, right now. We have looked at the radical response and call of international missionaries, who will leave everything behind to go and bring the Good News to the lost in another land. Then we looked at aid ministries that work throughout the world meeting real needs, right now, and through those relationships bring the Good News of Christ with them, from adopting children with a low-cost monthly donation that provides education, health care and safety (www. compassion.org), to the radical giving of material things to create funds for the drilling of wells, giving life through clean water (www.withthisring.org). Then we brought it closer to home with people going on short-term mission trips from our congregation, how it has impacted their lives already, and how you can be a part of it with them (www.northlandchurch. net/main/journey/). This week’s Focus in the Foyer is on local ministries that are responding to the call of the Gospel in action, being the hands and feet of Jesus to those with needs, physical and spiritual, in our community. We have several ministries featured and encourage you to find out how you can be involved, as a volunteer, prayer partner, host home, financial partner or in another way. Young Life (www.seminolecountyeastorlando. younglife.org) We have had a great relationship with this international ministry. One of our governing elders
and several congregants and staff members have come to Christ through Young Life or been involved with it throughout their lives. This ministry is focused on meeting kids where they are, earning the right to speak into their lives and having fun with them along the way. We are blessed to have Hagerty, Oviedo, Winter Springs and University High School chapters with Monday night Clubs and small group studies. You can be involved in many ways, and your kids can too! Contact Ame See for details on local club gatherings and summer events (407-492-0215 or ame@ylorlando.com). Sanford Crisis Pregnancy Center (www.sanfordcpc.com) We have had a congregational relationship with this local agency since our beginning. Pastor Joel C. Hunter spoke at the organization’s banquet last year, where he expressed admiration for founder Andrea Kraziese. Being there for those facing unplanned pregnancy offers an incredible opportunity to be light and salt. Its website states, “Our heart is to help you gather all the facts you need to make an educated decision that will affect the rest of your life. Getting information about all your options can make what seems like a ‘dark tunnel’ of confusion much clearer.” Andrea has been an inspiration for many in our community. Be a part of it with her through your time, prayer or support! Hope Foundation, Sonshine Thrift and Food Pantry (www.helpforthehomeless.net) The HOPE Foundation, a local food pantry and thrift store, works with churches, government, businesses and people to impact homelessness in our community. Our collaborative effort with them, Christmas in the City, was a huge success, and we desire to see more people involved. The name stands for the passion to see homelessness impacted through Housing, Outreach, Prevention and Education. Their mission is “to reduce and end the tragedy of homelessness among families throughout all of Central Florida.” Krissy Todd and other congregants are leading the charge against poverty in our community. Join them! Boys Town (www.BoysTownCentralFlorida.org) We started our site in relationship with this organization.

hen I think about our Southwind weekend a few weeks ago, I remember singing “Amazing Love” and coming to these words: “In all I do, I honor you.” I thought this is what we did all weekend with all of the folks who served. From building and painting bedrails, to tearing out bathrooms, to building ramps, painting cabins, and even planting flowers throughout the camp, the team that came together did so much, but the team members were blessed even more. Find someone who went on the weekend and ask that person about the trip, and you will find out it was truly an amazing weekend of serving together for the purpose of allowing Southwind the opportunity to give kids with disabilities the same opportunities other kids might have. So thank you to those who served. You are all amazing!
5 Their website states, “For over 90 years, we have been saving children and healing families. We provide help through many modern resources and traditional youth care in our facilities.” We have participated in painting service projects, backpack drives, Friday night family events and barbecues, mentoring, on-site volunteering and more. The kids from Boys Town help on Sundays, are involved in our youth programs and are part of our congregation. eamwork is a wonderful gift. When the Serve Teams join together for one purpose, they accomplish so much for those in need. A family in Debary needed help. The owners are older with disabilities and in need of some home repairs. Our teams joined together on May 9, and for three hours, they raked, mowed, fixed a fence and helped to landscape this home. These team members gave of themselves to serve others. That’s what it’s all about.
Pulling weeds is good for your body and good for your soul.

Answer: SUFFERING
Why Is There Suffering? Job 23:2-3, 8-10 Long ago a good man named Job went through some hard times. He suffered—that means he felt pain. Job believed that God was good, so it was hard to understand why God wasn’t rescuing him. He said, “Even today my problems are more than I can handle. I wish I knew where I could find God! I wish I could go to the place where He lives! But if I go to the east, God isn’t there. If I go to the west, I don’t find Him. When He’s working in the north, I don’t see Him there. When He turns to the south, I don’t see Him there either. But He knows every step I take.” During hard times, many of us feel far from God like Job did. We want to feel near to God. We want to see good come from hard times.

id you know there are more than 2,350 verses in the Bible about money? Did you know that nearly half of Jesus’ parables are about possessions? The Bible is full of wise counsel about our financial decisions. In fact, Jesus had more to say about money than about heaven and hell combined. Crown Financial Ministries has a 30-year history of equipping people worldwide to learn, apply and teach God’s financial principles so they may know Christ more intimately, be free to serve Him, and help fund the Great Commission. A seven-week, video-based Crown Financial small group study will be offered on Sundays, June 7 through July 26, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Northland
at Longwood, room 4209. Led by Bob Shoemaker, this course teaches biblical financial management and practical tools and resources to help you manage your finances God’s way. Bob Shoemaker has been a member of Northland since 1991. He was a financial planner for 17 years and has been the area director for Crown Financial Ministries for the last nine years. The cost for materials is $16, and these can be purchased at the class: Managing Our Finances God’s Way DVD, workbook and savings package. Dear Fellow Northlanders ...
......................................................................................................................... I hope this letter finds you well. I want you to know just how much we appreciate your faithfulness in bringing your tithes and offerings to Northland. This act of worship is making a tremendous difference here in Central Florida and around the globe. While God is giving the church many opportunities to help others in need during America’s financial crisis, Northland is facing a financial challenge of its own. Specifically, we need your help with the monthly mortgage payment for our new facilities. Because you are invested at Northland personally and financially, we want you to know that the elders of the church are encouraging the congregation to fast and pray every Thursday for the next 12 weeks. The focus of this time will be our spiritual growth, the church’s finances and the needs of our congregation, as well as the ministry happening around us. For many years, the governing elders have met at 6 a.m. every Thursday for a time of prayer. For the next 12 weeks, this is being expanded to an all staff prayer time at noon, followed by a congregational prayer time from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Longwood sanctuary. We hope that you will join us as we come together before God’s throne to thank Him for what He has done and commit to Him the needs of the church and His people.
OV = Northland at Oviedo
Tithes and offerings are anticipated to meet the day-to-day needs of the church, but giving toward the new facilities in Longwood has dropped significantly. As a result, we are reaching deep into our ministry reserve to cover the monthly payments, which will eventually affect our core ministry activity. God has blessed us with a wonderful facility that provides the tools we need to minister to tens of thousands of people every month. Our mortgage payment is $178,533 per month, but we are currently receiving $126,616 per month. Wondering how you can possibly help in a tangible way? We are asking congregants to add one percent of their income to their current giving, and add it to the building fund. This will allow us to catch up on our deficit and maintain our mortgage payments. Thank you, for giving this your prayerful consideration. If every Northland family or individual will pray for God’s help and simply add one, together, we can meet this challenge as we continue ministering to those around us … everywhere, every day. In Christ,
Marc McMurrin Executive Director of Operations

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. Challenges to Christianity: Brief Answers to Common Questions If God Is Good, Why Is There Suffering?
................................................................................
Scripture focus:
Worship Christ today as the Hope of our salvation. Summary prayer: ................................................................................
Job 23:8-10 (nasb)
..............................................................................................................................................
Behold, I go forward but He is not there, and backward, but I cannot perceive Him; When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him; He turns on the right, I cannot see Him. But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. Notes:
To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in You; let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me. Turn to me and have pity on me, for I am left alone and in misery. The sorrows of my heart have increased; Bring me out of my troubles. Look upon my adversity and misery and forgive all my sin. Look upon my enemies, for they are many, and they hear a violent hatred against me. Protect my life and deliver me; Let me not be put to shame, for I have trusted in You.
