Wenotare born again by pain, necessarily pain to ourselves any more than our natural birth means pain to us. We are born into the realm where our Lord lives by pain to God, and the pain of God is exhibited on Calvary. We have to learn to take up pain and weave it into the fabric of our lives. – Oswald Chambers NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
.............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Sri Lanka Unites Promotes Reconciliation BY JENNY SHAW Worship Team and College Coordinator, Student Ministries
F
news@mountdora
or nearly 15 years, Northland has been developing a close relationship with Kithu Sevana church in Sri Lanka and has partnered alongside the work and ministry of its pastor, Rev. Adrian de Visser. As this relationship has continued to grow, Northlanders have come to know the de Visser family well. Adrian has preached at Northland on a number of occasions, and both of his and his wife, Ophelia’s children have sung with the weekend worship team while visiting the United States. Adrian and Ophelia de Visser’s eldest child, Prashan, is a recent graduate of Gordon College in Massachusetts and an active advocate of reconciliation work in Sri Lanka. Prashan is a selfless, hardworking 24-year-old with a heart and passion Prashan de Visser for peace and unity within his nation. In collaboration with several other young people who share his vision, Prashan started Sri Lanka Unites, a unique and revolutionary movement to reunite the war-torn nation of Sri Lanka. The beautiful and culturally rich nation of Sri Lanka has suffered from brutal ethnic and religious divisions for more than two decades. These divisions have led to escalating violence
and armed conflict between the religious and ethnic groups and years of political chaos and economic crisis. The hatred between warring groups has become a generational scar, and Sri Lanka Unites’ purpose and vision is to abolish the plague of long-standing hatred and hopelessness. One of the main objectives of the organization is to bring together young people from every religion, ethnicity and region for a weeklong conference promoting reconciliation. These National Future Leaders Conferences provide a safe environment to begin breaking down negative stereotypes, increasing mutual understanding of each individual’s cultural and religious backgrounds, identifying potential leaders, and instilling hope and inspiration in young people. The Sri Lanka Unites movement represents the choice of Sri Lanka’s youth, from all ethnic and religious groups, to rise up and provide a new voice for the future of their nation. This year’s National Future Leaders Conference will be a four-day residential conference, gathering around 500 students (ages 15 to 18) of all ethnic and religious groups from across the nation. The conference will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from July 23 to August 2, and several Northlanders, including myself, will have the incredible opportunity to participate. Our role is simply to be “international cheerleaders” for the efforts and initiatives of Sri Lanka Unites. We, in collaboration with other volunteers from across the United States and around the world, will show our support for the mission of Sri Lanka Unites and its vision for peace and unity in that nation. We will not be leading the conference or speaking at the conference. We realize that by volunteering our time and efforts, we have the privilege of being a part of the turning of the tide in Sri Lanka’s history. Though our team that will travel to this island nation on July 23 is small, we want all of you to join with us in this opportunity to show support for a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka for present and future generations. To complete this journey, our team will travel from Orlando to Colombo, Sri Lanka—a distance more than 15,000 kilometers! But we have an opportunity for you to participate simply by traveling five kilometers.
Lots to Pray About Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
T
hese days, there is lots to pray about. Opportunities to help unbelievers come to Christ, pain and struggle in our communities that need the loving touch of Jesus, trials and uncertainties in our own lives, even the financial challenges we face together as God’s church at Northland. There are indeed many things to pray about. In 2 Chronicles 20, God’s people of another era had much to pray about, too. Jehoshaphat was the king of Israel, and he was a good king. He led the Israelites to love and worship the Lord. Despite their devotion to God, an enemy force approached them from the desert, bent on defeating the Hebrew army and taking Israel for its own. When the king heard of this approaching force, he “resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah” (v. 3). Israelite families from all over Judah came to Jerusalem to pray together. They sought the Lord, and the story of the divine deliverance that followed was nothing less than astounding. As they marched out to defend themselves, the Lord incited a battle within the enemy force, and they ended up annihilating themselves without God’s people ever having to draw blood. Northlanders in Mount Dora are standing together in the face of our enemies, just like our distant brothers and sisters did under King Jehoshaphat. We will be gathering each week to seek the Lord’s leading and intervention in our lives, in our church and in our community. We will seek Him for healing, protection, provision,
comfort, direction and blessing. Come and pray with us each week during the summer from 6 to 7 p.m. in the War Room at Northland at Mount Dora. If you want more info about this, call or e-mail me (352-434-4116 or bill.chapman@ northlandchurch.net). I’ll see you there!
On Saturday, June 13, you and your family are invited to join with this initiative and “run for reconciliation.” Sri Lanka Unites will be hosting a 5K Fun Run right here in Longwood to raise funds for this year’s National Future Leaders Conference. The 3.1-mile course will begin and end in the Northland church parking lot and will loop around through the beautiful streets and shady neighborhoods of Longwood. The money raised through registration fees will be used to provide scholarships for the hundreds of students attending the conference in July, assist in covering general conference costs, and help fund our team. So gather your family, your small group, your coworkers and your friends, and let’s run (or walk) together! (Continued on page 14.)

Living a Missional Life, Part 5 Right Here, Right Now ... JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
ow, what an amazing experience this has been, each week connecting with people in the foyer and throughout the week about ways each of us can answer the call to live a missional life, made by Christ in his last instructions here on earth (Matthew 28 and Acts 1). We met international mission workers (www. gemission.org and www.pioneers.org) that will be going to the ends of the earth with the Gospel, giving their lives to the call. We also have been introduced to international outreach ministries that bring the Good News of the Lord in the form of food, water, health care and safety through Compassion International (www.compassion.org) and With This Ring (www.withthisring.org). We came closer to home and focused on those in our congregation who are going on short-term mission trips called Distributed Journeys this summer to Swaziland, Africa; and Jamaica to see how each of us can “be a part of it” with them by providing prayer, materials and support for the teams and those they will serve (www.northlandchurch.net/ main/journey). Then we turned our attention to those doing the outreach work of the Lord here locally. We heard about outreach to youth through our ministry partners Young Life (www.seminolecountyeastorlando.younglife. org) and Boys Town (www.BoysTownCentralFlorida. org). We also were invited to partner in local ministry with our friends at the Sanford Crisis Pregnancy Center (www.sanfordcpc.com) and the Hope Foundation (www.helpforthehomeless.net), who bring Jesus to people in need, giving hands and feet to the Gospel in tangible ways. That brings us to this week, the last week of our focus on “living a missional life.” Our goal at
Northland at Oviedo is simply to provide as many avenues and opportunities as possible to inspire and encourage you to passionately pursue Christ in your own lives, seeking to know Him and make Him known by loving Him and loving others! We do that best in community and most powerfully when it starts as close to home as possible. For some of us, that means being better husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. For others, it means being a better roommate, neighbor, tenant, employee, boss or citizen. For all of us, it means being better disciples of Christ, followers of Jesus, passionate pursuers of the Way, the Truth and the Life. Now, I don’t mean in our outward appearance or behaviors, although that should be the end result. I mean “[loving] the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37, NASB). See, the greatest commandment puts the order right. If you do the second-greatest commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (v. 39), before you do the first, it will not be as right as it should be. It may still do good and be nice, but it will lack the power of doing them in the right order. Now, interestingly, you cannot do the first commandment correctly and not be doing the second; it is what happens when you do the first one fully. You love others because of the love you have for the Lord, which works back through you and out to others. I know this is a paradox, but surrender, sacrifice or even death is necessary to truly do anything with God’s power (Romans 6). The more we die and are removed, the more He shows up and does His work through us. We must pursue Him, reorient our lives around Him, and not give Him an hour here or minutes there. The Creator of the universe does not accept leftovers. We will better understand that when it is too late (Matthew 13), so please, “be a part of it” with us, with Him. Get connected, join a small group or Bible study, serve on Sundays or in the community, support kids in another land, support a missionary overseas, help bring life into this world … These are all things we have been called to do as a result of our love for Him. Participate in your faith! Spend time with Christ; develop a real relationship with Him by reading His Word and praying. Be like Christ in your home, your office, everywhere, every day! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

LifeHope Connects Those in Need With Others, Resources BY LAURA YOUNG Administrative Assistant to Pastor Gus Davies and LifeHope
W
e are deeply committed to serving people in our congregation and community and have daily opportunities and challenges to talk with people God brings to us. Our passion and goal is to care for people’s spiritual and longterm situations while helping them with their current needs. We do this by listening, praying and connecting them with church and community individuals and resources through which they can be loved and cared for, worship God, be equipped and, in turn, serve others. The LifeHope team is made of volunteers who work in collaboration with Pastoral Care and Congregational Services staff. They are available to love, listen to, pray with and serve the seven to 14 walk-in guests, 10 to 20 call-in guests and three or four appointments each weekday, helping to assess their priority needs and eligibility to be considered for financial assistance. Each team member has his or her own unique gift mix, skill set and abilities, and uses these, along with a heart of compassion, to serve our guests in various ways. Some of these include customer service skills, listening and discerning, knowledge of and ability to connect individuals to church and community resources, prayer, spiritual guidance and counseling. Other skills involve guiding guests through our financial application process; verifying documents, references and stories; data entry; preparing reports; and follow-up action plans. “When you serve in LifeHope, you forget your own problems, and your focus is on God, who will surely care for you!” one LifeHope volunteer said. We really depend on and are so thankful for our volunteers, who contribute an average of 30 to 40 hours each week. Whom do we serve? Single parents, families, and people who’ve had their work hours cut or who have lost their jobs and simply can’t pay bills come to us with various needs. We work hard to find where we can help them connect to people and resources for these needs. Over the past year, there has been a 70 percent increase in the

number of people seeking assistance from us; 60 percent are women, and 40 percent are men, with a pretty equal number of Northland and non-Northland attendees. On average, 40 percent of those seeking financial assistance do qualify. In the past months, of those seeking financial assistance, 25 percent were between the ages of 21and 35, 43 percent were 36 to 50, and 26 percent were over 50. Also, on average, of those seeking financial assistance, 36 percent were single, 24 percent were married, 10 percent were separated, 4 percent were widowed, 24 percent were divorced, and 3 percent were engaged. It is because of your generosity as Northland congregants that we are able to help so many. Thank you for giving. Lives are changed daily! Our team asks you to pray that God would give us the discernment, wisdom, time and knowledge of the church and community life and resources. If you are part of a small or home group or Bible study, we invite you to consider adopting an individual or family whom you can encourage, support, assist and help connect. It is in these small groups of closer connection that people change the most. We’d like to share a few stories of people that you as a congregation have helped. A single mom with children who left an abusive relationship came to us with no other options. We helped her with some monthly expenses, and connected her with DivorceCare. Recently, she returned to thank us and discuss ways she could help connect people through her own place of work with Northland. She shared her determination to become self-sufficient and how she acquired a job at a local fitness club, where she quickly excelled at what she loved doing. She said that God’s Christmas gift to her in 2008 was allowing her to become self-sufficient. She pushed forward through her circumstances and now seeks to serve and connect others in need. Another woman in her 20s who had been married for five years and recently gave birth to a baby boy, experienced her husband’s unexpected death last summer. While she worked part time, her husband was the main breadwinner. She found herself with insufficient means to make the monthly bills, and her husband’s leased vehicle was being taken back. We were able to help her with rent and, due to the generosity of a Northlander, gave her a car, for which she is so grateful, and she can now get to work and take care of her son. A husband and wife with eight children came to us seeking assistance because his car detailing job was not bringing in enough work and they were getting behind on bills. Though he diligently sought additional work, planned ahead, and went to his extended family, friends, church and other agencies for assistance, they still weren’t able to cover the bills. We helped with some of their monthly expenses and connected them to Peacemakers and Project Homeless Connect. As a leader in his church, he has a passion to reach out to others, so he told his friends and church about Project Homeless Connect and encouraged them to be part of it. It was an honor and great investment to be able to help these family members, who, though they were struggling, continued to seek how they could serve others. As we desire to be good stewards, we strive to follow the principle C.S. Lewis gives in his book The Four Loves: “The proper aim of giving is to put the recipient in a state where he no longer needs our gift.” If you are inspired to serve with us, complete one of our “Serve” brochures. Someone from our staff will contact you for an interview. We will assess your best fit based on your gift mix, skills, competency and chemistry with our team. Orientation, coaching and equipping will be provided as we serve together. Details about LifeHope: Laura Young (407949-7165 or laura.young@northlandchurch.net)

Serve Team Makes a Difference at Give Kids the World!
O
n May 16, more than 20 Northlanders joined a serving project at Give Kids the World, serving lunch to children with life-threatening illnesses. Serve teams gather occasionally to serve a meal to the children whose families have been chosen through the Make-a-Wish program. These families travel to Orlando to have one week of time completely taken care of, from their travel arrangements, to their food, to Disney park tickets and more. Serve team members have expressed how life-changing it is to be around these families, to see the smiles on the kids’ faces and the joy that happens when serving those in need. It’s a wonderful serving experience. Consider joining the next team as it makes breakfast for children July 25. Register online today!

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to the Beehive! I’m Buzz. Stick with me during our family worship service, and we’ll learn more about who God is and what He has done!
Today we worship Jesus for His strength. His strength helps us in our weakness. When we have lost hope, His strength gets us through hard times.

Answer: WHY IS THERE PAIN?
Why Is There Pain? Job 6:10-14 Job’s friend Eliphaz told him that Job’s pain was a punishment from God. But Eliphaz spoke without knowing the truth. He was wrong. Job said, “I haven’t said no to the Holy One’s commands. I’m so weak that I no longer have any hope. Things have gotten so bad that I can’t wait for help anymore. Am I as strong as stone? Is my body made out of bronze? I don’t have the power to help myself. All hope of success has been taken away from me. A man’s friends should love him when his hope is gone. They should be faithful to him even if he stops showing respect for the Mighty One.” When our friends lose hope, we must love them no matter what.

Challenges To Christianity Discussion Groups Starting Soon By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development
D
r. Joel C. Hunter’s current sermon series, “Challenges to Christianity,” has sparked a lot of interesting dialogue for Northlanders this summer. In response, beginning in June at Longwood and other sites, we will have the unique opportunity to hear from our governing elders on these topics. Governing elder Peter Katauskas has agreed to take the lead in facilitating one of these discussion groups. Other elders will join in the conversations, as they delve more deeply together into these struggles of faith and address questions in a more personal setting. Governing elder Peter Katauskas will be facilitating a group on Sundays at 11 a.m. in rooms 4206-07. Peter and his wife, Connie, have been
actively involved at Northland since 1990. Their three children grew up participating in Northland’s Student Ministries program, and their son, Brian, is now on the Student Ministries staff here. Peter is owner and president of Alexander Financial Group, an insurance and financial services firm. He also serves as secretary and treasurer on the Board of Elders at Northland. Connie is passionate about Bible study, her faith and their family. These discussion groups will continue throughout the summer, ending August 30, 2009. The topics will follow Dr. Hunter’s summer preaching schedule through three mini-series: “The Challenges of Christianity,” “Intellectual Challenges” (which will explore the questions about contradictions in Scripture), and “Personal Hurdles” (which will explore relational challenges and resentment and the obstacles they can be to faith). For more information, see the Become section of this paper. No advance registration is necessary for these groups.

RELEVANTRESOURCES
T
he following resources are available for use from the Northland Resource Library to any family, group or individual who wants to grow in the faith through Christ-centered studies: The Faith: What Christians Believe, Why They Believe It, and Why It Matters, by Charles Colson and Harold Fickett (Six week study) The word “Christianity” conjures up many pictures, depending on who defines it. But Chuck Colson asserts that the faith “given once for all” is an invitation to a wonderful vision of life, open to all who will come. The Faith invites all who will – whether believers or skeptics – to explore the basic doctrines of Christianity and find out for themselves what it really means to be called a disciple of Christ – and how to live as a disciple. A free copy of the 66-page study can be downloaded at www. breakpoint.org/generic.asp?ID=7455 The Life You’ve Always Wanted, by John Ortberg (Six-session DVD plus workbook) If you’re tired of the status quo – if you suspect there’s more to Christianity than what you’ve experienced – John Ortberg invites you and your small group to join him on a road to transformation and spiritual vigor that anyone can take. Designated to help you make the journey together, The Life You’ve Always Wanted (Zondervan) guides you down the ancient path of the spiritual disciplines. Cultivate new intimacy and confidence in prayer. Discover the freedom of secrecy. Taste the benefits of slowing life’s frenetic pace. Learn how to be guided by the Holy Spirit ... and more.

Moving Through Your Problems Toward Finding God, by Dr. Larry Crabb (Six weeks, workbook plus video) In today’s psychological culture, we have become a people more concerned with solving our problems than finding God. Whenever we place a higher priority on solving our problems than pursuing God, we become immoral. Finding God leads the way to real freedom and joy by insisting that looking for God in the middle of our problems, rather than requiring God to provide solutions to our problems, is the path to life. “LIQUID” — Fork in the Road (Story of David) A fork in the road always begs the question “Which way will you go?” It requires a decision. Sometimes the decision is well-thoughtout. Other times we’re forced to decide in a split second which direction to take. We’ve all had forkin-the-road moments, just like King David, a great man of God. Sometimes he chose the road to greatness; occasionally, his choices took him down the road of heartbreak. Just like us ... life had a way of leading us to a fork in the road. Designed specifically for your small group, LIQUID is a DVD-based experience that features five 10-minute episodes in each series, along with a reflections guide. This modern-day film series mirrors ancient biblical stories with emotionally provoking videos, introspective questions and tips for leading a small group.
For information on how you can check out materials from the library, call Suzanne McCutchen, Resource Library Coordinator (407-971-2050). Items that are reserved can be picked up at and returned to the Student Ministries Activities and Care Center reception desk.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Worship focus:
Challenges to Christianity: Brief Answers to Common Questions If God Is Good, Why Is There Pain?
................................................................................
Scripture focus:
Worship Christ today as our Source of strength. Summary prayer: ................................................................................
Job 6:10-14 (nasb)
..............................................................................................................................................
“But it is still my consolation, and I rejoice in unsparing pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One. What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that I should endure? Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze? Is it that my help is not within me, and that deliverance is driven from me? For the despairing man there should be kindness from his friend; So that he does not forsake the fear of the Almighty.”
Incline Your ear to our pain, Lord. Rescue us quickly; Be to us a rock of strength, a stronghold to save us. For You are our Rock and our Fortress. (From Psalm 31, a psalm of David) RELEVANT RESOURCES ARE NOW ON PAGE 10.
