Volunteer as an Online Missionary By Dr. dan lacich Pastor

decision for Christ or that they have a question about following Jesus, they are contacted by a volunteer online missionary. The volunteer provides a personal contact and helps the person with his or her next steps and prayer requests. My first day as a volunteer took about 15 minutes of my time. In that 15 minutes, I replied to a message from a young man from Uganda who had just given his life to Christ and wanted prayer so that he could be stronger in his faith. I also replied to a young man from Detroit who was recommitting his life to Jesus after walking away for a time. I was able to direct both these men to some online resources to help them get closer to Jesus, as well as pray for them. It is a truly amazing experience to be able to encourage these new believers as well as to pray with some of them to become believers in Jesus. People who serve as volunteer online missionaries find that they end up growing through the ministry in ways they never anticipated. There is a confidence that they gain in their faith for the everyday world as a result of serving in the virtual world of the Internet. Many people are afraid to share their faith face to face because they are worried that they won’t have the answer or will say the wrong thing. The beauty of this ministry is that you have time

ne recent Sunday morning, I ran into a fellow Northlander as he walked into the lobby in Longwood. He had a huge smile on his face, so I asked how he was doing. “Great” was the reply. “This morning, I prayed with a girl in Algeria to give her life to Christ.” Now, you tell me, would you like to have that as something you accomplished before breakfast one day? Thanks to Northland’s partnership with Global Media Outreach, you have such an opportunity. Global Media, or GMO, is an Internet-based evangelism ministry that has been growing by leaps and bounds. Last year, GMO had more than 3 million people indicate a decision to follow Christ on one of their more than 90 different websites. Of those 3 million, nearly 750,000 provided contact information so someone could follow up with them. So far this year, more than 5 million have indicated a decision for Christ. The people who visit the GMO sites come from countries around the world, including many that are closed to the Gospel. They speak numerous languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, German, French, Swedish and Chinese. Many of them do not have access to a church or another Christian, though many do. On June 3, our entire staff learned how to be a volunteer online missionary. On June 4 and 6, 280 Northlanders attended an orientation to learn about GMO and how to be involved in its ministry. Since then, many of them have taken the 20 minutes needed to sign up with GMO, and once approved, they have to take an additional 20 minutes to read the training materials and get started. It really is that easy. Our goal is to get as many Northlanders as possible serving in this ministry. There is a need for all languages, especially Spanish speakers. Blessed to Be a Blessing JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

ast week Jeremy wrote about the “In Her Shoes” tea that took place Saturday, May 30. The tea culminated with the call to put on an event for women in our community who find themselves in hard times. Thirty-one women signed up to be on a team coming together this summer to plan and implement the vision we have received from Luke 14:13 (please read). Jesus Himself laid this idea of serving the least of these as a basic quality of those who would follow Him. The Old Testament, too, is filled with commands of this nature. Isaiah 58 is one of these places in Scripture where we hear the voice of God the Father telling His people what it is He asks of them. “And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday. And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail” (Isaiah 58:10-11, NASB). In a world fraught with self-help books, seminars and people obsessed with their own darkness, the passage above holds such a powerful truth. Lest you think me to be insensitive, let me preface this thought with one of personal testimony. My own life has been riddled with personal tragedy and struggle, but as I came through those experiences,

I realized the power of being outward-, not inward-focused. The verses that largely led that season told me, “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32, NASB) and that “it was for freedom that Christ set us free” (Galatians 5:1, NASB). Free for what? Free to “give [myself] to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted.” We are blessed to be a blessing. We are given much in order to give! Not to hoard and spin in our obsessions. Isaiah 58 is a desired reality for me, and I believe it can be for you, too. Our God has promised that His Word will accomplish what He means it to. So when He says “give yourself … then your light will rise,” you can take that to the bank. Do not misunderstand – this is not about being a worker for God; this is about following Jesus, working with Him. Do not belittle the work Christ did on the cross by thinking you might be able to somehow earn your “gloom [becoming] like midday.” Again, He calls you to follow … in His power, for His glory and for your ultimate satisfaction both in this life and in the one to come. I know that many of you are in the midst of “scorched places.” But notice in this passage, He does not say, “and I will take you out of your scorched place and satisfy you”; He says, I will “satisfy your desire in scorched places.” Wherever you find yourself right now, reach out to Him. Do not do what human nature urges you to do and withdraw and become angry. Accept your “scorched place” and find Him there as you get out of yourself and give. Beloved sister or brother, find Him in the midst as you give yourself away, and may your life abound with the deep satisfaction that is known by following Jesus. Join us as we begin to pray and plan this outreach event where we will serve, love, listen, walk with and encourage women from our community who are in need. God Himself tells us that this will not go unnoticed; it will be richly rewarded by Him in the place where it matters most – eternity! ave you ever found yourself sitting in a waiting room at a hospital? What was that experience like for you? A week and a half ago, my dad had openheart surgery, and there I sat, with my family, waiting. But what I found out is there is so much more going on than just waiting, as many of you probably already know. Spending time with family and friends in a time like that offers the opportunity to talk about things that are important, and to reminisce about the past, funny things that happened when we were young, and even about the way life is today. You see the significance of relationships and how they have impacted your life. However, there is also more to a waiting room experience than just waiting and spending quality time with your family and friends. You also have the opportunity to be used by God in other situations as well. In my case, family members were waiting to see what was going to happen with their dad/brother who was battling cancer in its final stages. It is amazing to see what will happen when you allow God to use you. The emotions were strong, and I asked God to use me if He wanted in that situation. A door opened as the family came through the waiting room, and

I went over to ask if I could pray for them. The truth is if we ask for open doors, God usually opens them, especially if it has to do with helping others. From the outside, nothing seemed to change for them after I prayed. But then there were times when I passed the son during the day and he told me what that meant for him and his family. What I learned was that it doesn’t matter what you say or do, but that you do something when you get that nudge from God. So the waiting room is not just for waiting; it’s about hearing God’s voice and acting on it. I believe many of us

Pathways to Care Helps Homeless Recover BY SARAH MATTINGLY Northland Executive Assistant Service

f you have a heart for serving the homeless, volunteering with Pathways to Care, a Northland-supported organization, may be just right for you. Pathways to Care, a 40-bed not-for-profit respite center, provides health, housing and hope to Central Florida’s most vulnerable homeless. The organization provides short-term recuperative care and support services for homeless adults in need of temporary housing in order to recover from an acute medical illness or injury. Pathways to Care opened July 1, 2003, as a licensed assisted living facility with a goal of supporting its residents to achieve greater health, self-sufficiency and housing stability. Clients are urged to develop and complete a social recovery plan devised to solve the root causes of their illnesses, homelessness and joblessness. As such, Pathways to Care goals are farreaching on an individual and a community level. Its specific goals for the coming year are: • To serve at least 230 poor, medically underserved adults. • To provide social services to every individual referred to Pathways to Care. • To complete medical recovery for 67 percent of the individuals referred to Pathways to Care. These goals are accomplished through Pathways to Care’s caring and talented nursing, case management and resident life staff, as well as through a large network of volunteers. The staff is knowledgeable about the resources available in the region and connects Pathways to Care clients accordingly. Staff and volunteers work one-on-one with clients to teach them life skills and self-care, educate them about their illness or injury, and provide spiritual and social support on an ongoing basis. On average, Pathways to Care has a 68 percent success rate of relocating individuals with family or achieving other independent living options through Pathways to Care’s links to numerous social service and housing providers and its strong community support network. Pathways to Care became a program of CCCF in January 2007. Collaborating with various community partners, including local Catholic and Protestant churches, regional homeless agencies and hospitals that serve Orlando, and Seminole and Volusia Counties, PTC is able to fulfill its mission to care for a particularly vulnerable part of the homeless population, serving the greater community at large. How You Can Help Pathways to Care owes much of its success to the volunteers who serve. The opportunities are numerous, and there is never a moment when a volunteer’s help is not needed. There are two ways to serve: 1. Sign up for a local serving project at Pathways to Care. Each month, we send a team from Northland to serve a meal at Pathways to Care. Serve team members have a great opportunity not only to work in the kitchen, but also to spend an evening with the patients, getting to know and love

Serving Blesses Pathways Volunteer Pastor Joel has always espoused that God’s purpose for our lives is not primarily comfort. God is primarily interested in our relationship with Him and the character, strength and service that result from that relationship. Prior to actually getting involved in serving others, I found myself echoing adages such as, “I’m glad I’m not him/her,” or, “I can count my blessings that’s not me,” but through service, these thoughts have faded away. My relationship with God has grown significantly, and my faith continues to mature through serving others. Serving is not about elevating yourself, or your situation or circumstance, or about feeling somehow superior, or even “lucky”; it’s about realizing that we are all equal in God’s eyes. It’s about setting aside titles, labels, age, gender and ethnicity, and reaching out to a human being who, like myself, is a child of God. Nothing more. Nothing less. And in reaching out to others, you find the other person reaching back to you with wisdom, faith and love that far surpasses your own. These times are so incredibly humbling and so powerful and provide us with a nanosecond of insight of what God’s intent for us is – unconditional, unadulterated love for one another. God is not so much interested in our circumstances as He is in our character. How can your life not change after sitting across the table from a man who is homeless, is in poor health, has no possessions, is a recovering drug addict with no source of income or job and only wants one thing: prayers and intercession for strength to endure that which awaits him after he leaves Pathways? He doesn’t complain or ask, “Why me?” He doesn’t ask to be removed from his situation; he only asks to be improved by his situation. Experiences like these from serving have developed my character by allowing me to see and interact in the world as God has always intended for me to do. “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Thank You, Lord, for the privilege to serve You by serving others. And thank you, Northland, for your giving heart, which makes these opportunities all possible! – Jim Coleman

Life without God Job 21:13-16 God made heaven and the earth and everything in it. He made all people. Many people love God. Some people do not believe in God. Others know that God is real, but they do not want to worship or obey Him. Job said those people told him, “Leave us alone! We don’t want to know how you want us to live. Who is the Mighty One? Why should we serve Him? What would we get if we prayed to Him?” Those people may seem like they have a good life, but they have the most difficult life of all because they live each day separated from God. Even when terrible things happened to Job, God was always with him. That is truly like having heaven on earth! Believers never have to go through life without God.

LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you.
