ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

.............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Following God’s ‘Will’

Former Inmate Makes Good On Promise to Northland’s Jail Ministry Team By GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads

W

news@mountdora

e first met Will in the Seminole County jail during our morning worship time. He is a gentle man, someone who had hit bottom. But he was hungry for the Lord and wanted to change his life. We prayed with him and connected him with a mentor. We say to every inmate, “Please come and worship with us once you get out!” Will promised that he would. For him, this was very important. He saw it as a first step in his recovery. On Monday, June 8, when I arrived at church, there was Will in the lobby of Northland, waiting for the evening service to begin! Much to everyone’s surprise, he had been to court that day and was released on time served. He was released at 5 p.m. By 7 p.m., Will was shaking hands with Pastor Joel and telling him how grateful he was to be at Northland. In the lobby, a few women overheard his story and generously gave him a gift card to Nature’s Table Café so he could get a bite to eat. What a glorious time we all had worshiping with Will that night! There were five members of Northland’s Prison and Jail Ministry surrounding him with the love of Christ and worshiping with him. He wept during the service, and as we were leaving, he said he was coming back to Northland. A heating and air-conditioning tradesman, Will plans to find work and also to volunteer in the community. He said that seeing pictures during

worship of people giving back to the community stirred in him a desire to do the same. “I can do that!” he said with enthusiasm. Will’s plans — developed with his Northland mentor when he was in jail — are to travel to his hometown of Kansas City, where his truck and tools are located, then to return soon to Longwood and “his church family,” as he calls us. Several of us from the jail ministry team recently took Will to the bus stop. We gave him a ticket and packed up some groceries for the 28-hour bus ride and told him we would see him in a few weeks.

Sue Newman, orientation coordinator for Northland’s Prison and Jail Ministry, said goodbye to Will at the bus station.

n 1967, The Turtles came out with the smash hit song “Happy Together.” Just as the boy and the girl in the song were happy to be together, we Christians can enjoy the happiness of being together as well! At the birth of the church, followers of Jesus were continually gathering, devoting “themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42, NIV). Whenever two or more are gathered together in Jesus’ name, for worship, service or fun, He is there, enjoying

What made Will the happiest? How warmly he was welcomed once he arrived at Northland. He was so fearful of being rejected based on how he looked. (When he was released from jail, he only had the dirty work clothes that he was arrested in.) But to him, keeping his promise to us was far more important than how he looked. Thanks to such a wonderful and welcoming congregation, Will felt right at home. We eagerly await his return! To learn more about Northland’s Prison and Jail Ministry, contact Gretchen Kerr (gretchen.kerr@northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7190).

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER Himself among them. He tells us so in Matthew 18:20. We are joined together by the blood of Jesus and the power of His Spirit, in a way that no “toss of the dice” can break! How cool is that? Cool enough to celebrate! And celebrate we will. The Mount Dora Youth Group, CREW352, invites all Northlanders out to a Mount Dora congregational Fourth of July party! All Northlanders are welcome. We are gathering together at the home of Brent and Melanie Williams. Come relax on their farm, and enjoy the open space, the farm animals and an unrestricted view of the fireworks in both Mount Dora and Eustis. Bring a lawn chair, a side dish or dessert to share, and an open heart to connect more deeply with your spiritual family! See the ad on this page for the time and address. news@westoaks The Best Job in the World! TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister

O

ver the past few weeks, I have had plenty of time to think about my role as a dad as I have been sitting waiting on my own dad to recover from the complications he has experienced after his open heart surgery. What kind of dad am I today to my four daughters and am I still willing to grow as a father are questions I have been asking myself. I am challenged to be a dad that reflects the kind of love Christ has given me. So what does that look like? Like I wrote a few weeks ago, the time flies and you only have a short time to make the impact on a child’s life that you want them to be like, and then they are graduating from high school. So here are some of my thoughts: 1) Take time to be with your kids. Take them with you when you go to the store, or play that game they ask you to play with them. This is what they will remember! 2) Spend time reading the Bible and praying with them. This will leave an imprint on them that will last their entire lifetime. It can be the foundation on what they build their own lives on. 3) Tell them how proud you are of them. Kids don’t hear enough that. Their lives are surrounded by competition and the idea they don’t measure up. You have the opportunity to build them up in a world that naturally tears them down. Look for things they do, no matter how small or trivial they seem (I am proud of you for putting your plate in the sink, or for the decision they made, or for listening the first time I asked you to do that!),

and let them know you are proud of them. 4) Love them unconditionally. Your children need to know you love them no matter what they do. Even when they make mistakes, you don’t condone the behavior, but you love them through it. Again, in the culture they are living in today, they are loved because they are good at something, or they look the part, or they have something others want. But very rarely are they loved just because! Remember, this is how you are loved by Jesus! He loves you just because He loves you. You do not earn His love. So reflect this kind love to your child. There are so many more thoughts I have about being a father, but what I wanted to do was give you the opportunity to think about your own ways of loving your kids. I encourage you to continue taking every chance you get to show your kids how much you love them and hopefully they will get a picture of how much Christ loves them. Finally, I want to say to all you dads out there that are working on being a great father, we notice that! We notice that in your children; we notice that in your wife (and in her countenance); and we notice that in YOU! You have been given a gift(s) in your children and so I encourage you to treat them that way. Now, getting back to my dad! As I have spent time by his bedside in the ICU, I have been so grateful for his life. I have been grateful for the things he has taught me and continues to teach me. He is a great dad! I am also grateful for all of you at West Oaks. Last weekend was one of those moments, as you gathered around me and my family and prayed for us, and my dad, that I will cherish for the rest of my life. It was a clear picture of Heaven that we heard so clearly about from Pastor Joel. Thank you for loving me and my family so powerfully. YOU are truly a blessing and I grateful for you! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Choose to Wait Shows Youths That God Will Never Leave or Forsake Them Jos and Sylvia Holtzhausen are Northlandsupported missionaries serving with Christ’s Hope International. Jos is the international director, and Sylvia works with the Choose to Wait ministry, serving as a teacher and trainer, and in curriculum development.

C

hoose to Wait is not merely an abstinence program. It aims to give biblical truth foundations for all of our choices in regards to sex, gender and marriage. Our curriculum has outgrown our original Choose to Wait book, and I am now tasked with writing a new edition that includes the new curriculum. I have been in Namibia, Botswana and the UK recently. All the time, in between these travels, I keep working on the new edition of the book. I progress slowly, but very surely. It is an arduous task because I am not just writing a book filled with information, but producing a tool that can be used in the hands of youths and teachers to guide them to discover for themselves the biblical Jos and Sylvia Holtzhausen. truths about sexuality, love and marriage.

Conversations in Namibia, April 2009 I asked God to send me help as I work on the book. He answered my prayer in an unexpected way. When back home in Namibia, I really enjoy the times I get to visit with the young people from the various clubs I have run over the years. They are my helpers. Our conversations about their lives and struggles are my inspiration to make sure that the issues surrounding sexual purity that they face will be addressed in the new book. Of all the many girls and guys I had conversations with, 70 percent say, “My father doesn’t love me.” Some do know who their fathers are, and others have never met their fathers. Most live in deep poverty with single mothers or grandmothers, while their fathers live within a few kilometers of them and pay them no attention at all. This is a great tragedy. Precious human beings, procreated by the sexual relationship of their parents, made in the image of God, who believe, “Because I am not worth the love of the one who gave me life, I am not worth anything.” Boys say, “I am so angry. I am not able to get the future I long for, so I will settle for the short-term rewards I can grab now.” Girls desperately trying to find love end up single mothers abandoned by the guys who said, “You are beautiful. I love you.” They look for the next one who will love them – for

a while, at least. For these young people to become cyclebreakers is a long, uphill battle. The Choose to Wait program leads them to the One who says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. Fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by my name. You are mine.” Conversation in Botswana Even as I write the new edition of the Choose to Wait book, the old edition is being used to great effect. Last year, the Choose to Wait book was given to many students around the world. The response has been amazing: “Please, can we have more of these books? It is one of the very best booklets about sexuality and doing things God’s way that we have seen.” In early May 2009, 22,000 Choose to Wait books went to a church that is making sure that every senior secondary student gets a book as part of the student’s AIDS prevention program. In Botswana, I met a man who asked for books and more books for his colleagues at work. He was worried about his young daughters working in the fields with their grandmother and caregiver while he works in another town. “I am afraid they will be molested by those foreign men who are working in the fields. I am afraid for my daughters, but I don’t know how to speak to them about such things.” Here is a father who does love his daughters but has no skills in protecting them. Conversation in Nottingham, United Kingdom, May 2009 I went to a women’s friendship evening. We had all brought our favorite piece of music and shared why we liked it. Our choices varied from Greig to Bruce Springsteen. One woman had not brought any music. She sat beside me and listened attentively when I was asked to explain, in about 10 minutes, what I do and why I do it. I told of the huge challenge of these words, “My father doesn’t love me.” She asked if she could say something: “My father died when I was young. My mother told me and showed me that she did not love me. I was broken up inside. I left my country to make a life for myself here. I found healing for my soul and forgiveness for my mother because I met the God who is the Healer of my soul. I know that I am loved and precious in His sight. When I have children, I will never repeat the pain for them. I will love and cherish them. Please tell these young people in Africa that they have a Father who will never leave or forsake them.” This shy woman’s testimony was probably the most beautiful music we heard that night. Through Choose to Wait, we are showing our God to the young people we work with, and showing them that they do have a Father who knows their name.

Answer: WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE MEAN?

Why are some people mean? Job 22:1, 7, 9, 21-22; Romans 2:1-4 When Job was having a very hard time, Eliphaz had a choice to be kind to Job or to try to blame Job. Eliphaz made the wrong choice. He should have chosen kindness. Paul explained it this way: “If you judge someone else, you have no excuse for it. When you judge another person, you are judging yourself. You do the same things you blame others for doing. We know that when God judges those who do evil things, He judges fairly. Though you are only a human, you judge others. But you yourself do the same things. So how do you think you will escape when God judges you? The best way is to be kind to everyone and watch for the good things God will do!”

You can’t judge a bee by his cover.

Draw a picture of Eliphaz blaming Job.

arriages are under a lot of pressure these days. It seems that during difficult times, pressure takes its toll on even the best of relationships. This unique marriage course provides couples with the opportunity for focused conversation together around guided topics. Each class begins with the couples gathering in a candlelit room for a meal that they have provided for themselves. Together the large group views a video teaching, and then couples disperse to work through the evening’s material together. There is no group discussion – only discussion between husband and wife. The course gives married couples tools to build a strong and healthy marriage that lasts a lifetime. When: Thursdays, June 25 through August 13 (8 weeks), 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. (Child care provided upon request) Where: Northland at Longwood, room 4206 Cost: $10 registration per couple plus $10 for 2 workbooks Details and Registration: Barb Olsen (barbara. olsen@northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7183) Who could benefit: • Those who want to enhance their marriage • Those in the first years of marriage • Those in challenging stages in their marriage • Those struggling with issues in their marriage *Privacy as a couple is always respected. inancial Peace University is about to start up again. Don’t miss this opportunity to turn your finances, and your life, around! Here’s what participants are saying... I can’t believe what an impact this is having on my life! I view everything from such a different perspective! I’ve done my monthly cash flow/ budget for June and am using envelopes — amazing how your spending changes when you’re handing out cash versus a debit card. I’ve re-arranged my monthly spending and savings/retirement contributions to go full speed ahead on debt snowball. This is a freedom journey. I’m excited about seeing results. This is such a paradigm shift — some parts are easier than others. I know it sounds crazy. We have one credit card (not using it out of wallet), but can’t cut it up yet. I am holding onto it from a security perspective, which is the crazy thing, even as I type that. We have $3,500 in our emergency fund. I guess as that fund gets built up and I see the results happening and much prayer, I can cut that thing up! Again, I know this is a journey in more ways than one. Challenges to Christianity Class Discussion Week 2

B

The Big Challenge If God is good, why is there suffering? If God is good, why is there pain?

3. According to Jesus, why was this man born blind? 4. What does Jesus’ answer reveal about His view of man’s pain? 5. With whom do you identify most in the story – the disciples, the man who was healed, the parents or the Pharisees? 6. This incident was an opportunity for healing of spiritual blindness for everyone involved in this story. How many had their eyes opened that day?

Governing elder Peter Katauskas

Bible engagement Read the story from John 9 about the man born blind. This was a man who knew something about suffering. Not only did he suffer the consequences of his physical limitation; he also suffered social ramifications because of his condition. Based on the beliefs of that day, he was condemned and considered an outcast. 1. Do you think that the man born blind, or his family, thought his condition would ever change? 2. What belief lies behind the disciples’ question in verse 1?

Discussion 1. When has an ongoing experience with pain or suffering allowed you to see Jesus? 2. When has healing brought about renewed spiritual vision to your life? 3. How do you view the purpose of suffering? 4. What struggles have you encountered in your faith as a result of pain or suffering? Challenge The best possible result of pain and suffering is to turn to Christ and to be conformed to His image. Details: Barb Olsen northlandchurch.net)

When Bad Christians Happen to Good People: Where We Have Failed Each Other and How to Reverse the Damage, by Dave Burchett Throughout history, Christians have done considerable damage to others — both independently and in the name of Christ. Targeting those who have been hurt by a believer, author Burchett outlines a new way of relating that will bring healing to the church and transform witness to the world. Bring ’Em Back Alive: A Healing Plan for Those Wounded by the Church, by Dave Burchett Every believer is a precious part of Christ’s body. When even one is missing, the church is less than whole. Whether we’re victims, perpetrators or innocent bystanders, we’re called by God to seek restoration. And when one of God’s sheep goes missing, we have no choice. Safe People: How to Find Relationships That Are Good for You and Avoid Those That Aren’t, by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend Do your “people connections” lift you up or drag you down? If you often make “wrong” choices in love, work or friendships, you can learn to find people who are good for you! Cloud and Townsend identify traits of untrustworthy people, offer practical strategies for forming healthy associations, and reveal things about yourself that jeopardize relationships.

CHALLENGES TO CHRISTIANITY CLASS SCHEDULE

Participant’s Guide for June 21 elow are the Scripture passage and questions that will begin this week’s lesson. The discussion each week will follow Dr. Hunter’s preaching schedule of the “Challenges to Christianity” series, led by governing elder Peter Katauskas. Join this group on Sundays through August 30 at 11 a.m. in rooms 4206-07 at Northland at Longwood.

his week Dr. Hunter continues the preaching series “Challenges to Christianity: Brief Answers to Common Questions” with his sermon “If God Is Good, Why Do Moral People Seem So Mean?” For many people, the circumstances of life often pose challenges to faith. But God doesn’t back down from a challenge. He is not intimidated by our doubts and fears. He will use them as the very things that bring us to a clearer knowledge and understanding of Him. Below are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that address many of the struggles with faith we experience:

GOVERNING ELDERS

BELIEVE 16

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Worship focus:

Challenges to Christianity: Brief Answers to Common Questions

.....................................................................................

If God Is Good, Why Do Moral People Seem So Mean? Scripture focus:

Job 22:1, 7, 9, 21-22; Romans 2:1-4 (nasb)

.......................................................................................................................................

Job 22:1,7,9,21-22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded, “To the weary you have given no water to drink, And from the hungry you have withheld bread. You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the orphans has been crushed. Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you. Please receive instruction from His mouth And establish His words in your heart.” Romans 2:1-4 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

Notes:

REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR BIBLE TO WORSHIP SERVICE

Worship God today as the Source of all goodness. Let us not take lightly the riches of His goodness, as evidenced by His kindness and patience, which leads us to repentance. (Romans 2:4) Summary prayer: .....................................................................................

What are you, my God? What are you, but the Lord God himself? You are the highest, the most righteous and the most powerful being. You are the most merciful, and yet the most just. You are the most mysterious, and yet the most present. You are the most beautiful, and yet the strongest. You are stable, yet incomprehensible. You are unchanging, yet changing all things. You are never new and never old, yet you are constantly renewing all things. You are always working, yet always at rest. You create great riches on earth, yet you need nothing yourself. You support, nourish and protect all. You love, and yet you are without passion. You are jealous, and yet have no fear. You recoil at our sin, and yet you do not grieve. You are angry, yet remain serene. You alter your plans in response to our actions, yet your law and purpose remain firm. You take as you find, yet never lose. You have no needs, yet you rejoice in all goodness. You have no envy, yet you require us to multiply the talents you have bestowed. You pay debts, yet owe nothing; you forgive debt, yet lose nothing. What shall I say, O my God, my life, my holy joy? What can any man say when he speaks of you? Silence offers the greatest eloquence, yet woe to him who does not sing your praise. —St. Augustine
