“The idea is not that we do work for God, but that we are so loyal to Him that He can do His work through us – ‘I reckon on you for extreme service, with no complaining on your part and no explanation on Mine.’ God wants to use us as He used His own Son.” - Oswald Chambers

ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

New Transitional Home for Women Is a ‘Dream Come True’ for Volunteers By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Print and Public Relations

I

news@mountdora

n Central Florida, highly motived women looking to make a successful transition out of the prison system back into society now have a place to call home. Jessica’s House, a transitional living facility for women, officially opened its doors with an open house on June 20. A partnership between Northland and the True North Foundation, Inc., Jessica’s House will provide housing for eight women who voluntarily commit to a nine-month program designed to help them learn valuable life skills and begin building a new life of faith and service to the community. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), two-thirds of all parolees are re-arrested within three years—most within the first six months after release. “Without adequate preparation and support for life after prison, the chances are great that inmates will return to their former lifestyles,” the CDC reports. “This may lead to drug use, possible infection with HIV, re-arrest and return to prison.” Gretchen Kerr, Northland’s director of life crossroads, who also leads the church’s Prison and Jail Ministry, explains that many inmates leave prison or jail with no savings, no stable housing, no health or unemployment benefits, and very limited job possibilities. “Many people leave prison with the best intentions,” Gretchen notes. “But if they don’t have a plan, they’ll eventually go back to what

orthlanders in Mount Dora are praying. Each month we meet for Gathering 2:42, an evening of food, fellowship, worship and prayer. At the May Gathering, a leader of Debbie’s Doorstep asked for prayer for the granting of its 501C3 application by the Internal Revenue Service. Without this critical designation, a nonprofit organization is hindered in its fund-raising efforts. The application had been submitted for quite some time with no response from the IRS. The board members were anxiously awaiting the IRS’ decision. Soon after Northlanders

they know, even if it might land them behind bars again.” She says that Jessica’s House was a dream of many women at Northland who volunteer with female inmates: “The relationships we forge with these women are so deep. We wanted to help them not only while they’re in prison, but after they are released ... we wanted to see the process to completion.” The women who live in Jessica’s House will be carefully selected. “We’re looking for highly motivated women who want to change their lives for the long term. This isn’t a quick fix, it’s a step-by-step process, and the women who agree to this process have to be committed to seeing it through,” Gretchen says. Days at Jessica’s House will be highly structured. Residents will work four days per week at Northland Church, volunteering within a positive environment and building healthy relationships

with others. A live-in “house mother” will guide residents during their stay at Jessica’s House. Additionally, each resident will have several mentors assigned to help them, teaching valuable life skills such as a money management, health and nutrition, homemaking and more. Northland began holding live worship services for inmates back in December 2008. Armed with a computer, projector and sound system, a small team of volunteers held an inaugural worship service via live webcast with more than 50 inmates. The church now holds live worship services at both John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford; and the 33rd Street Correctional Facility in Orlando. Your help is needed to make Jessica’s House a success. For more information, contact Gretchen Kerr (407-949-7190 or gretchen.kerr@northlandchurch.net). The True North Foundation, Inc. was started to help the church fund efforts outside its walls for the benefit of the community and the betterment of the world. To learn more about the Foundation and how you can be involved, contact Marc McMurrin (marc.mcmurrin@northlandchurch.net or 407937-1810).

Volunteers stand in front of Jessica’s House. This four-bedroom home will provide a safe and healthy environment for up to eight women, who voluntarily commit to a nine-month program.

prayed for this breakthrough, Debbie’s Doorstep received its 501C3 designation! This victory puts Debbie’s Doorstep one step closer to Debbie’s goal of providing a godly haven for abused women and children in Lake County. Prayer puts us one step closer to intimacy with our loving Father. He gives us a burden, permits a need, or inspires a vision, and then bids us to come to Him for the healing, relief or fulfillment that we seek. This summer, the Mount Adorables are meeting each week to pray as a family. Join us from 6 to 7 p.m. in the War Room to pray for our leaders, for our communities, for God’s church and for each other. Then continue in that sense of prayer by fasting with us on Thursdays. Fast from food, fast from entertainment, fast from something upon which you truly depend, and pray. Allow the Holy Spirit to draw you one step –Isaiah 56:7 (NIV) closer to Him as you fast and pray. For more information about prayer at Northland at Mount Dora, contact me (352-434-4116 or bill.chapman@ northlandchurch.net). Spread Out or Piled Up? JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

I

just finished reading Crazy Love, by Francis Chan, with our small group. We did the small group study video segments (available for any of you who are interested) and discussion questions along with the reading. Maggie and I read the book last fall, and it has been a catalyst for many conversations in our home, with our friends and family, and in the various ministry settings we find ourselves in ever since. Our group took a while to finish the small group study because we occasionally did fellowship gatherings, served together and have been preparing to leave for a mission trip next week to Swaziland, Africa. It has been a wild ride this spring going through this experience together. Our group has been meeting for about a year and a half, and we have done marriage, finance, video and book studies, but this one really drove it all home for us. Why? Crazy Love is about being overwhelmed by a relentless God, who, once correctly perceived and understood, rightly deserves obedience and worship in love. The God of Abraham, Jacob, David and Christ is our God, and He has revealed Himself in Scripture to us today. He has not changed; He is as immutable, omnipresent and all-powerful now as he was at creation, the flood and resurrection, and will continue to be in all eternity. The question the book raises over and over is, What are you going to do about that here and now, in your own life? Once you have heard, seen and felt that truth, are you just able to go back to your life the way it has always been? Can you truly just exist, or is there more? Will you just put the book down (Crazy Love or, more importantly, the Bible) and simply say, “Good book,” but not actually be different?

STUDENT MINISTRIES–SUMMER 2009

Details: Erica Emler (407-687-8571 or erica.emler@ northlandchurch.net)

I loved Chris Tomlin’s comment in the foreword to the book. He says that Francis Chan “is one of those rare people you come across in life who leaves you wanting to be better.” I pray that is what each of us here at Northland at Oviedo is – that kind of person for each other. I pray that we inspire and encourage one another to be the best versions of ourselves possible, now here is the catch – not by our own will or strength or power, but by surrendering ourselves to Him more and more in our simple, daily lives. How? By passionately pursuing Christ, seeking to know Him and make Him known, by loving Him and loving others, using words only if necessary. As that happens, He is lifted up, glorified, and works more and more through us in ways we could not imagine or possibly do on our own. See, He loves us with such a “crazy love,” a love that sent His own Son to the cross to die to redeem the creation that had been lost, that we might have eternal life. The only response is to love Him back with a “crazy love” that is not controllable, predictable, safe or manageable, but is simply obedient and willing, no matter what it asks. Here is the best part: That looks different for everyone. The end of the book brings it all home when it says that “God is a creator, not a duplicator,” so you “must learn to listen to and obey God” to hear what He is calling you to do. But be sure of this: He is calling you! Today’s sermon is focusing on the work of the Kingdom all around the world and the unique opportunities we as Northlanders are given to serve, from the various teams here at the Oviedo site, to those around CFL, to others around the world. Please pray about where God may be calling you to serve others and participate in His Kingdom work. I want to leave you with this thought from the end of Crazy Love that I love and think paints a clear picture of how important it is for us to be sent out: “Christians are like manure: spread them out and they help everything grow better, but keep them in one big pile and they stink horribly. Which are you? The kind that reeks around which people walk a wide swath (to avoid)? Or the kind that trusts God enough to let Him spread you out (no matter what)?”

Family Time Is the Best Time

A

fter being consumed with circumstances out of my control, getting back to the basics of family life is a treasure. I don’t know if you can identify with what I’m talking about (though I am sure most of you can) – spending time with family is such a simple thought, but is so important. There are so many ways you can spend time with your family, but having time to create that special moment with family members can be just as exciting and can actually last a lifetime.

Bible Study (Middle School)

As the summer gets into full gear, I want to encourage all of you to look for different opportunities that are offered to spend time together. And by this, I mean spending quality time with your West Oaks moms and their children enjoy being together at Dr. Phillips Splash Pad. immediate family as well as your church family. Derika, with the help of many others, has done a great job putting together a calendar of events for the summer that brings our church family together. Many of the moms of West Oaks, with their children, spent last Friday at the Dr. Phillips Splash Pad, enjoying the day in the sun and playing in the water. And what I heard from them was that it was encouraging and fun to be together with their friends and family. I think the busyness of life can be overwhelming at times, so again, I encourage you to not miss the opportunities the summer offers you and your family. How different this summer can be from past summers is up to you. You have the choice to make your family members a priority and invest yourself in them, or to continue doing the same thing and miss what God has for you. If you have different ideas for the summer, where others can join you, please talk to Derika and see if you can get it on our West Oaks calendar of events. I look forward to seeing how we can connect with each other this summer. Remember, we are the church, and God has big things planned for us! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Answer: WHAT IS MY OFFERING TO GOD?

WHAT IS MY OFFERING TO GOD? Micah 6:6-8 God’s people asked what God wanted as an offering of worship. They wondered if He just wanted riches and treasures. But God wants us to worship Him not only with our riches, but by the way we live our lives. Micah answered, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” • TO ACT JUSTLY is to treat everyone fairly. • TO LOVE MERCY is to be glad when someone is shown kindness and forgiveness instead of the punishment they deserve. • TO WALK HUMBLY with God is to not show off or be proud about who you are or what you have done.

What about Jenny?

Draw a picture of yourself showing mercy to someone. Remember, mercy is kindness and forgiveness.

Challenges to Christianity Class Discussion Week 3 Participant’s Guide for June 28

of why we allow suffering back to us. In what ways is the question of evil similar? • If hell is not God’s rejection of people, but people’s rejection of God, it is the result of our own choices. How do you evaluate the choices in your life to see where they are taking you? When we talk about evil in the world, and why God doesn’t do something to end it, what we usually have in mind are the huge, obvious, ongoing kinds of evil, like the evil perpetrated by ruthless dictators and terrorists, or the evil of genocide. In her book Creed or Chaos?, Dorothy Sayers makes the point that each of us is a carrier of this disease of evil. When we ask God to eradicate evil, we don’t understand that we are asking for our own demise. “The problem of sin and evil is, as everybody knows, one which all religions have to face, especially those that postulate an all-good and all-powerful God. ‘If,’ we say readily, ‘God is holy and omnipotent, He would interfere and stop all this kind of thing’ – meaning … wars, persecutions, cruelty, … or whatever large issue happens to be distressing our minds at the time. But let us be quite sure that we have really considered the problem in all its aspects. “‘Why doesn’t God smite this dictator dead?’ is a question a little remote from us. Why did He not strike you dumb before you uttered that baseless and unkind slander the day before yesterday? Or me, before I behaved with such cruel lack of consideration to that well-meaning friend? And why, sir, did He not cause your hand to rot off at the wrist before you signed your name to that dirty little bit of financial trickery?” – Dorothy Sayers, Creed or Chaos?

The Big Challenge: If God is good, why do evil, injustice and hell exist? Bible engagement: (30 minutes) Scripture openly acknowledges the struggle of evil. One of the best examples is in Job 21:7-16. Ask your class members to read this passage at their tables. Then, together as a class, discuss the following questions: • Why does it cause us to struggle when we, like Job, see the wicked prospering around us? • If you were in charge of the universe, how would you run things? • How do you explain injustice in the world? • In his sermon on suffering, Pastor Joel made the point that God could turn the question

Imagine Yourself Debt Free Financial Peace University PREVIEW CLASS: Sundays July 12, 10:45 a.m., rooms 4213-15 STUDY: Sundays, July 26 through October 18, 10:45 a.m., rooms 4213-15. Details and registration: Rich or Jana Haussmann (407-333-0960 or rhaussmann@cfl.rr.com)

Discussion: (10 minutes) In his book Disappointment With God, Philip Yancey gives an overview of the trinity and the distinct role of each member of the Godhead. While it is easy to see God, the Father, as distant – He sent His Son to come near to us. And it is the Spirit of Christ that indwells us and walks with us – that is the guarantee of our inheritance. • How has your view of God affected, or been shaped by, your experience with evil or injustice? • How has the Spirit made His presence known during times of disappointment with God? Have the class members read together Romans 12:9-21. • According to this passage, what is an appropriate response to evil for a believer? • How can we overcome evil in situations in our lives, even when we cannot stop or control the evil actions of others? • When have you experienced this kind of victory? Details: Barb Olsen (407-949-7183 or barbara.olsen@ northlandchurch.net)

elow are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that reflect the focus of this weekend’s worship service:

A Life Well Lived, by Charles R. Swindoll What does God expect of you? Delving into the book of Micah, Swindoll reminds us that what "honors the Lord is a heart that beats in the same rhythm as His, a spirit that values the same qualities that define Him. He wants people who do what is right, who love kindness, and who walk humbly with Him. Do as he says, and you will not only honor the Lord you love, you will live life well." In A Life Well Lived, Swindoll explores these three pillars of God-pleasing character, discussing the means and motivation to achieve them as well as stumbling blocks to watch out for. Violence and Theology, by Cheryl Kirk-Duggan Many people of faith tend to say that they espouse peace and believe the essence of Micah 6:8, which states that we ought to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Violence and Theology introduces the pervasive, stark reality of violence that weaves through general and religious culture in the West: including Scripture, classic literature, and nursery stories; history and politics; music, sports, television and video games; and even theology itself. From this persistently honest analysis, Kirk-Duggan then leads us to explore themes of justice, conflict resolution, holistic and cultural health, and spiritual and theological wellness, as ways to overcome violence today. Humility, The Journey Toward Holiness, by Andrew Murray When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of a servant," He modeled for all believers' true humility. Murray calls this "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature of discipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility--as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written.

Preaching the message this weekend:

Sean Cooper, Minister of Service and Equipping

Sean Cooper is the minister of service and equipping at Northland. After attending the church while in college, he grew interested in Northland’s passion for intergenerational leadership and the opportunity to equip a new generation of Kingdom leaders. In 1996, he initiated overseas trips that would eventually integrate the Student Ministries into an international network of student leaders. Having grown up in Brazil as the child of missionaries, Sean thrives on the diversity of cultures—especially the opportunity churches have to learn from each other in expanding God’s Kingdom. When not traveling or working on overseas projects, Sean is often found among college students and young adults, discussing cultural anthropology, social justice issues or the band U2. He and his wife, Addie, are parents to a daughter, Emerson, and an infant son, Wyatt. Sean says the “community that celebrates Jesus” was what first drew him to Northland. “This church is a catalyst for sending us back into the community to share the Good News of Jesus with others.”

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Worship focus:

Becoming a Serving Society

.....................................................................................

Scripture focus:

Micah 6:8 (nKJV)

...................................................................................................................................

He

has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

Worship God today for His mercy. His mercy means His goodness to those who deserve only punishment. When we reflect His nature, we show goodness to others, without asking what they, or we, deserve. Summary prayer: .....................................................................................

APPLICATION: ...................................................................................................................................

Teach us, Father, to serve You with humility, and with gentleness and patience, let us take Your mercy, love and justice into the world every day. Let us vindicate the weak and fatherless, help the afflicted and destitute, and rescue the weak and needy. Deliver us all from the hand of the wicked.

Where do you see injustice in your day-to-day world? Who do you see in need of mercy in your neighborhood, at the office or on the playing field? What could you do to effect change for those people in those situations?

You can participate in Sean Cooper’s call to action at www.northlandchurch.net/respond.
