a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Perspective From The Cross
“The Blood Poured Out” by Clay Dunklin BY Teresa McCaskill Creative Producer, Worship
T
his week Pastor Joel begins a miniseries on intellectual challenges to Christianity. As you probably know, the team that plans the worship services every weekend takes its cue from Pastor Joel’s topics and tries to create a worship environment that will support the preaching of God’s Word as well as the creating of an environment where the congregation can express its praise to God. Every step is prayed over, discussed, examined, reexamined and reexamined again! As we looked at this new series and talked it over, we realized we’d like to try something a little different for the next five weeks. One of our five worship interns from The University of Mobile in Mobile, Alabama (more info on page 14), Clay Dunklin, happens to be a fine artist. He created the piece of art on the front page this weekend. This piece is the first in a series of five. Each week Clay will create a work of art that will be displayed on the platform during our worship times. A reproduction also will be on the front page of this paper each week so you can take a closer look and see details you might not see from your seat or online. For those of you at our Longwood site, you are also welcome to come up and see Clay’s artwork before or after the services. Each panel will connect with Pastor Joel’s sermon topic for the weekend. At the end of the series, we will print all five of the panels alongside one another in the newspaper. Clay had to create this artwork with the end in mind (a perspective known to those of us who have listened to Pastor Joel through the years!). Below, Clay talks about how he came up with this idea, as well as more about art in the church.
Clay: I wanted to portray something that spans time, life and all reality. The cross is a testament to Christianity and how God works. The rest of the series will point back to this symbol of God’s love in action, the cross. Teresa: So it’s perfect that we would be celebrating the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper this weekend! Clay: Yes! I wanted to portray the reality of the blood of Christ spilt and poured out for our sins. Jesus used the imagery of the cup filled with wine to symbolize His blood poured out for the forgiveness of sin. In my piece, I have painted a bottle that has been broken and used shards of glass affixed to the canvas to portray Christ’s suffering on the cross. You’ll notice the scrolls of red paint on the canvas, reminding us that Christ’s blood brings redemption and cleansing to all of our life. Teresa: What else do you want us to notice in your piece? Clay: You also can see light pouring in at the top of the canvas. Jesus is the Light of the world. He brings understanding to us when we don’t understand. Even this light is seen in the light of the cross. The cross is rustic and natural. I’ve added pieces of wood to make it more realistic.
Teresa: How is your piece different from a painting? Clay: I guess it’s different in my use of mixed media. Along with the paint on the canvas, I’ve added glass and wood. When Pastor Joel mentioned the benefits of incorporating different perspectives and views along with the old and the new into our understanding, I envisioned this piece being more 3-dimensional in its design. I love paintings, but I also like there being an element that is tangible, something you could touch and feel like it is in real life. This makes it more personal and realistic. Teresa: That makes me picture Jesus with His disciples at the Last Supper. I can imagine Him touching the cup of wine and handing it to each of the disciples. It makes it more real. Clay: Right! My main purpose is to give a visual image of Communion, to bring it into reality more. When we talk about and take Communion, sometimes it feels kind of distant – something we’ve done for so long. I think bringing it into reality and having a tangible visual reality is the idea behind this panel. Teresa: Have you ever tried to do anything like this before? Clay: Well, I’ve never done anything this fast, especially this big! It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever painted – in less than a week. Teresa: When did you know you were an artist? Clay: Art is the only thing I’ve always done. Kids always say what they want to be when they grow up - a fireman, a policeman, ... Well, I wanted to be an artist. I was always drawing. I took art classes in middle school and high school – that’s when I got into mixed media. Music I had to work at. Art feels more natural. Teresa: What is your desire for art in the church? Clay: I’ve always had a desire to see the visual arts as a worship form in the church, in the body. I believe art has fallen by the wayside. I’ve had a desire for art to come back into the church in a way that would help us focus on who God is and what He has done and bring glory to Him.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” –Colossians 3:17 (NIV)
Serving Jesus and enjoying friends – it doesn’t get any better than that! Adults at Northland at Mount Dora love to serve Christ as well! Take Jonathan and Melony Bailey, for example. This couple serve regularly at The Carpenter’s House for Children in Leesburg. Jonathan offers his talent and time to the Lord as Mount Dora’s lighting tech on Sunday mornings. And now they are following Christ’s lead in their newest serving venture, a Distributed Journey to Brazil. Jonathan and Melony will join the August Brazil team and offer their skills in painting (Jonathan) and hair styling (Melony). The Lord has certainly called them to go and has given them the precise abilities they need to be effective on the trip. Going where God calls you to go to do what He
T
he youths at Northland at Mount Dora love to serve Jesus! On June 20, middle and high school students (and some parents) gathered on the farm of Brent and Melanie Williams to prepare for the Mount Dora site’s Fourth of July party. The barn was cleared out, lawn furniture was cleaned up, and cattle were herded to another pasture (yes, cattle!) – all to get ready for the Mount Adorables to come together for fun on the Fourth. These youths worked hard and afterward ate pizza, doused each other with water, and slid downhill on a Goliath-sized Slip ’n Slide.

“…, so that …” JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
I
have I have often thought a word study of “so that” would be great because it always seems to come at a time of important direction or explanation. There are almost 1,000 occurrences of that term in the NASB translation. Why is it such an important set of words? According to one English website, “so that” is used as a subordinate clause to “show a cause producing an effect.” That means we must pay attention to the cause and the intended effect, not just one or the other, or we may miss the whole point. Today’s text has this clause and is a great example of the importance of paying attention to both parts of the sentence, the cause and the resulting effect. We learn about Scripture itself, how it was created and why we are to believe it. It is “God-breathed,” or “inspired by God.” The Holy Spirit supernaturally presented the Word of God to and through men in such a way that it would reveal who God is more fully than the Hebrew Scripture had done, unveil His plans and fulfill His work in creation. Awesome, but the verse goes on to say that there is a reason He did this: because Scripture is useful for several things – teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Those are all important aspects of not only the Christian life, but the Christian life in community, the body of Christ as an organism. They are relationship verbs, implying the relationship between the Word of God and the reader, and also the many readers of the Word of God together, as a collective group. Again, amazing, but why? That is where “so that” comes into play.
“So that” the man of God will be thoroughly equipped for every good work the Lord has in store. Wow, that is a powerful transition. The Word of God is useful for all of these things “so that” we may be “thoroughly equipped” for “the work” that lies ahead. God in heaven gave us His Word so we would be prepared, trained and ready for the work that He has planned for us, thoroughly. As I said last week, we are all different. In Crazy Love, Francis Chan says, “God is a creator, not a duplicator,” so what He is thoroughly equipping me for is different from what He is thoroughly equipping you for, but be sure of this: He is thoroughly equipping all of us for the work He has for us to do. Notice I keep repeating the “thoroughly” part. He is not doing it half-heartedly. It does not say that His Word is useful for “kind of” equipping us or “possibly” equipping us. There is no such thing as sideline or part-time Christianity. This brings me to the last point. This verse says that this is all true for the “man of God.” His Word is useful for the man of God to be fully equipped to do the work. Are we men of God? Are we in His Word? Are we doing the good work? This is not works salvation; this is salvation works. It is by grace through faith that we are saved, lest any man should boast. Those who have been saved become, by Christ’s work, men of God, reconciled and renewed and as such need His Word to be fully equipped to do the good work. These don’t seem to be options as much as imperatives, but that is another English lesson for another day! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

news@westoaks Called to Freedom TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
H
ave you ever asked yourself the question “What did Paul mean when he wrote, ‘You are called to be free’ in Galatians 5:13?” I think many of us see ourselves as free today because we live in the United States of America. But I think what Paul is getting at is the freedom found in Jesus Christ from the bondage of sin. Even though there is freedom in Christ, that does not give us permission to continue sinning. This freedom Paul describes in this passage is the freedom to love and serve one another – not get caught up in the law that held the people captive. He sums this new freedom up ironically in the term “servant” or “slave.” We should use this freedom to serve others. We have been set free not to think of our own wants and desires (wow, is this something I need to work on in my own life!). The truth in this passage is we have been set free from selfishness so that we can truly love our neighbor. Before we had a relationship with Christ, we were lost in our selfishness, but now we are free to participate in God’s love for all people through our service. And here is when I say, Thank you for expressing your freedom through loving and caring for your neighbor. I am not only talking about the service projects you participate in regularly, but also the individual people you invest your
life in. I see your love and compassion for the mom who just started coming to our West Oaks site, and the support you have given to her and her daughter blows me away. And there are many people and families who are now a part of our West Oaks community because you loved them and cared for them. I also know how important it is to hear the stories of the people you are sitting next to right now. When we read about and hear the statistics of where people are today, it is hard to imagine that one out of every eight people are going to bed hungry every night. Look around! Do you know who they are? I am encouraged to hear many of you talking about what you are doing, and have done, for those you know in difficult situations. Thank you! This is what Paul is saying in this passage. It has nothing to do with keeping the law, and everything to do with experiencing a love that can only come from experiencing Christ in your life. I am thankful that as Paul talks about the difference between being absorbed with yourself –Galatians 5:13 (NIV) (and all the ways that is reflected in our world today) and loving others more than yourself, it is clear you are experiencing the latter. I see the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in many of you every weekend. I think this is evident in why so many of you stick around after the service for 20 to 30 minutes. All of these gifts are only truly experienced when we sacrifice ourselves for others. We only truly know love and joy when we give to another. And to all of you in our West Oaks family – you are doing that! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Keep being the hands, feet and voice of our Savior, and let freedom reign! Remember, you have been called to freedom.
“ You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.”

Local Partner Spotlight:
The Carpenter’s House for Children (A Northland-supported organization) By Ann South
T
heir faces are bright. Their stories are compelling. They are the rescued children, brought to this remarkable family at The Carpenter’s House by the Lord’s guiding hand from orphanages and life-threatening poverty in third-world countries. They’ve come with serious medical conditions and from near starvation in desperate need of health, comfort, love, hope and a new life. They’ve found all of that, and more, in this amazing household. One child is unable to walk due to cerebral palsy; another suffers from serious, frequent asthma attacks. Yet another, who was born with a cleft palate that has been corrected, now needs speech therapy. One child has Down syndrome. Another has an incurable condition that will severely limit her life expectancy and slowly rob her of her physical and mental abilities. And one child is deaf, with limited vision and limited mental capability. Sixteen children grace the halls of this home. Their lives are now marked by love and laughter, nurture and joy. They share bedrooms – bright, sunny rooms. They share chores – there are lots of mouths to feed and a home to keep up with – and life lessons from the usual challenges of growing up with siblings. They share their parents’ attention; even with all the activities of the day, one-on-one time is always available, with a hug, a listening ear, a word of encouragement. Most of all, they share the Lord’s love, displayed by their parents and taught and “caught” every day. They know Him as their Friend, their Source of all blessings, their Rescuer. Northland has reached out to The Carpenter’s House for Children since 2007, offering financial support and volunteers. A couple who attend the Mount Dora site brought this ministry to their site as a local outreach. The Carpenter’s House has since provided ministry opportunities for kids, teens and adults, who volunteer during big “project” days or on a regular basis. Their experiences sum up the ministry best: My daughter and I are from the Longwood site, but we were very blessed to help at The Carpenter’s House. We encourage more folks to go there and be encouraged by the work being done at the house. You can only explain it as God’s work. – Heidi Whatley, Longwood site What an honor it is to serve our Jesus by helping at The Carpenter’s House. The amazing thing about this ministry is after each time I serve there, I am the one who walks away blessed. They are an amazing family, and we have a blast together! – Tara Dufrene, Mount Dora site All of the children at The Carpenter’s House are special. Whoever visits or volunteers will be blessed beyond words. While you are there, take a minute to meet Sophie. Sophie doesn’t walk, and she doesn’t talk. But Sophie does sing! Sing a line of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” “My Darling Clementine” or “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” and Sophie will join in with the biggest smile you have ever seen. And if you look closely, you will see Jesus in that beautiful smile. – Page Patnode, Mount Dora site
I’ve been out to The Carpenter’s House a couple of times. Each time I leave there thinking how blessed those kids are that Pat and Linda have committed to the calling of the Lord to raise those kids in their home. I was really taken aback when Linda told us they have raised 140 children, including three of their own! There is always so much that can be done there to help them (you can just imagine). They are very special parents and so appreciate any help they receive. A real sense of accomplishment is felt when I leave there. – Mike Heaton, Longwood site The Carpenter’s House is supported by donations. Financial donations are needed and are tax-deductible. Volunteers are necessary to help with lawn work, laundry, meals and activities for the children. If you have a business and can offer a service such as printing, painting, cleaning, home repairs, grant writing or another service, it is welcomed. More information about the ministry can be found on its website (www.thecarpentershouseoflakecounty.com). Contact Ann South, volunteer coordinator (352-267-3388 or south4@ comcast.net) for information on how to donate your time or resources. Remember, it’s not about us.

Sharing Christ
D
o you want to go deeper? Do you want to walk away from a serve project even more fulfilled? When is the last time you asked someone on your Serve team how that person came to know Christ? Or when did you last ask someone whom you were serving if the person had a prayer request? Or when did you talk about what your beliefs are and how God has touched your soul and encouraged you to serve others? This is a call to go deeper. This is an invitation to learn how to open up with your story and learn how to share your faith with others.
Join us July 18, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Student Ministries and Care Center, Fellowship Hall. Learn how to tell the stories of God through your own life stories as you serve others in all of your relationships. You will discover how to use your natural styles, gifts and abilities to be a witness and share Christ with others.

Answer: IS ALL OF THE BIBLE TRUE?
IS ALL OF THE BIBLE TRUE? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 God has breathed life into all Scripture. “Scripture” means the words in the Bible. Every word in the Bible is from God. It was written down by people, but God showed them what to write. Scripture will always be true and always have meaning for the lives of all those who read it. Scripture is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right. By using Scripture, a child of God can be completely prepared to do every good thing.

Interns Gain Experience, Bring New Perspective BY JENNY SHAW Worship Team and College Coordinator, Student Ministries
A
distributed church is a church that centers on God and revolves around others, rather than insisting that the particular church is the center of the universe. As you very well know, Northland believes in the intentional distribution of the church, with the end goal of ultimate connection through deep relationships that build the Kingdom and reflect God’s image. Throughout the year and especially over the summer, practicing the distributed church often looks like teams of our congregation participating in Distributed Journeys both locally and all around the world, building relationships and doing Kingdom work. This summer as part of continuing the practice of distributing, Northland is welcoming new interns into our family. One of the core values of our church is intergenerational leadership, and one of the ways that this value has been carried out is through the inclusion of interns. This has looked differently throughout Northland’s history, but the goal has remained the same: to create a dynamic learning experience that equips interns to distribute the church. The practice of intentionally pursuing summer interns began last year in the worship department. Last summer four students from Mobile, Alabama, committed their summers to participating in an internship in the area of worship. Through their involvement and experiences over the summer, the value of their voice was recognized. Not only did they gain technical, musical and leadership experience from working along with our staff and volunteers, but the worship department and our church as a whole were challenged and changed because of them. These students brought a younger and wider voice, a greater perspective and a whole new pool of versatile ideas. After their eight-week internship, the leadership of Northland recognized this program as an essential element for the growth of our body and necessary for the greater good of the church as a whole. This summer we are welcoming 17 new interns in the areas of worship, service, Student Ministries, and audio/visual engineering. They are Bethany Case, Taryn Moorhead, Lauren McLaughlin, Courtney Walmer, Kailey Copeland, Jack Droppers, Clay Dunklin, Mike Tracey, Kaley McCann, Chelsea Crisp, Jessica Haussmann, Jen Beres, Thomas Kurz, Katie Wilcoxson, Danielle Ussery, Kyle Fredricks and Brittany Diacheysn. Several of the interns are local Northlanders who for the next six weeks are committing to a deeper level of involvement and service. The others are from universities around the country. Besides their day-to-day tasks, preparation and practices, the goal of their training is to gain a deeper understanding and application of the principles of a distributed church, including the teaching of the philosophical foundation of Northland’s vision and mission. The benefits gained are unquestionably mutual. While the interns will help with the planning and execution of worship services, student events and service projects, Northland will grow from the new and versatile perspectives these students bring. As a church body, we have a unique opportunity to be intentionally influenced by this group of extremely talented individuals. Join us as we welcome these new members of our church family!

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
