ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Perspective From The Cross

“Faith and Science” by Clay Dunklin

news@mountdora

BY Teresa McCaskill Creative Producer, Worship

A

s you know, Pastor Joel is in a series where we are taking a look at various intellectual challenges to Christianity. This week he is focusing on the connection between Scripture and science. As we explored this idea in planning these worship services, we decided to try something we haven’t done before. We have asked one of our interns from the University of Mobile, Clay Dunklin, to create works of art to coincide with each sermon topic in this series. This weekend you’ll see on the front of this newspaper (and online) the second panel in a series of five. At our Longwood location, you can see both panels side by side. We will add a new panel each week during this series, and you will be able to take home the complete collection at the end of the series. You’ll notice as you look at the painting the colors and suggestion of a landscape. The scrolls of blood from Clay’s artwork from last weekend spill over into this image of God’s creation, and the broken glass symbolizes the need of all creation for the redemption that comes through Christ’s blood shed on the cross. Rising up out of creation is a symbol of science, the periodic table. Clay chose this because it is a scientific tool. This is something recognizable, not just a picture of the reality. This scientific table is used to help us understand the elements that make up the matter that exists in God’s creation. Once again, Clay has given this piece of art a three-dimensional quality. He has crumpled up the paper holding the periodic table, glued it on the canvas and then painted on top of it to give it a textured look. This draws you in and causes you to look closer. It echoes the real glass and wood from last week’s panel. Have you ever thought of God as an Artist? Can you imagine His joy in creating the earth, the sky, the sea? The different species, the myriad varieties of flowers and birds, the colors of the rainbow. We are surrounded by God’s presence in creation. Psalm 19:1-3 (NIV) tells us:

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Remember when God promised Abraham he would have a son in Genesis 15:4-6, and Abraham had trouble believing this could be true? God told Abraham to look up into the night sky and see all the stars He had created. “Try and count them,” He said. “That’s how many descendants you’ll have – more than you can count!” God used His creation to inspire and stimulate Abraham’s faith. Abraham believed God as he looked up at the stars. He believed that God was big enough and powerful enough to do the impossible. This is something science and creation can do. They can inspire our faith. They can help us understand God better. They communicate God’s truth through our senses of smell, taste, touch, hearing and seeing. The more we learn of God, the more our faith grows stronger. This God who created the universe, the ultimate Artist, is personal. He is not a Creator who put things together in a haphazard way. He is not a Creator who created His artwork and then moved on to something else. He is intimately involved in and with the world He created. This includes you and me. “He loves each one of us as if there were only one of us” (St. Augustine). Week 3 – Constant Presence

Unity Among Brothers Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

G

od sure is keeping the Mount Adorables busy this summer! On July 18, we will paint the home of a single-parent family in our community, and with a project such as that, the prep work is considerable. So on Tuesday, June 30, a handful of Northlanders gathered at the home to cut back bushes and pressure clean the house. Pictured are the three men who did the work. Notice that each of us is part of a different generation: I was born in the 1960s, Jack in the ’20s, and Micah in the ’90s. We are brothers in the same Lord who came together to serve Jesus by serving this family. Jack cut back the shrubs, I loaded the clippings in the truck, and Micah pressure cleaned. After a couple of hours, we stopped to rest awhile and began trading stories. Jack shared an experience in Europe during World War II. I described my call to vocational ministry. Micah spoke of school, sports and a time when the Lord protected him from certain disaster. We prayed together, we joked around a bit, and we enjoyed the unity of fellowship and service. I love the unity that grows up when Christians serve together. It’s one thing to come together for our mutual benefit; fellowship among believers provides that. And it is another, deeper thing to come together to meet the needs of others. No one expresses this better than God Himself as He does in Psalm 133:1: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” (NIV). Good and pleasant indeed.

Are you connected to other believers in Christ? Is Psalm 133:1 simply a concept for you, or are you experiencing it now? There are ample opportunities in Mount Dora and at all Northland worship sites to experience unity in fellowship and serving. I would suggest that you ask the Lord where He wants to plug you in, and then ask fellow Northlanders to point you in the right direction. A few unity venues are advertised right on this page; many more can be found in the back of the Northland News. If you would like to help out with this painting project on Saturday July 18, contact Jack Terman (jterman@cfl. rr.com or 407-782-3944). Bring your painting equipment and an extension ladder if you have one. Jesus prayed that His people “may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you” (John 17:20, NIV). Pursue and experience this unity with your Northland family. Your life will never be the same! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Faith?!?!?! JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

I

have been looking forward to this week since I saw it on the worship planning calendar (“Doesn’t Science Make Scripture Obsolete?”). I love having this conversation with people. I am probably most intrigued by this because I have had it so many times with family members close to me, near and dear to my heart, but who are lost nonetheless. We have had this talk so many times because they believe, as the question asks, that science makes Scripture obsolete. They believe science has proved that God and religion are nothing more than a psychologically and socially constructed necessity of the human mind. Nothing more than a predictable outcome of the social organism called humanity. What I find so interesting about this thought process is not what it says, but what it fails to say. Sciences, both physical and social, have not proved these notions at all; rather, they have just attempted to replace God and Scripture with their alternative God and source of truth: man. I have come to believe, see and hear that we all have faith in something or someone. The question is not whether we do or don’t, but more accurately, who or what we have faith in. I think another reason I enjoy having this conversation with people is because I believe we are all affected by this more and more every day, oftentimes without even knowing it. We are a product of the culture and world we live in from the time we are little children. Our parents, their parents, their parents and so on were being shaped and molded by the forces of philosophy, art, culture, science, politics and theology, oftentimes, like us today, without any real knowledge of it happening. As we moved through the Age of Reason

and Enlightenment and into the Modern and Postmodern Age, we experienced a major shift in the center or source of authority. Throughout most of human history, the source of authority was external, either God or king or nature. Something or someone outside of oneself was the source of authority. We are now experiencing the consequences of placing that authority internally, within ourselves. That brings me back to the subject of today’s sermon, science and Scripture. Like Pastor Joel, I believe that science only reveals more and more of who God already is. If you were to say, “I figured out 2 + 2 = 4,” and that had been previously unknown, we would say you (internal) discovered that truth, but in reality, that truth already existed (external) and was true; we just had not realized it. In the same manner, when Copernicus suggested that the sun was at the center of the universe, or when Columbus suggested that the earth was not flat, but round, these truths already were true. Only the realization of these truths by mankind had not occurred. Science continues to reveal and discover more about the universe we live in, and every time it does, I am more confident in God because there must be a source for all these truths, and it is Him! I am not that source of or center for truth. Neither is any man, woman or scientist. We were at one point confident that the world was entering another ice age, now global warming. Once the universe was expanding, then contracting, then both. Once there was the possibility of black holes; then there were some. Now they are everywhere. These are just a few examples of the constant change that is human authority. For us as Christians, we must place our center and source of all authority in the only One who truly has it, who never changes – God the Father; Jesus Christ, His Son; and the Holy Spirit, as revealed to us through Scripture. If we do this, then we can engage science in faith as a discovery tool of the incomprehensible Creator, God Himself! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

news@westoaks Prayers of the Faithful TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister

S

ince the challenge was issued by the elders and staff to set aside Thursdays as the day for prayer and fasting for those who call Northland home, I have been so blessed and encouraged to pray with the faithful at West Oaks. Not only has this been a time to be committed to the larger body of Northland, but it has also been a time to reconnect with our Savior. I have been extremely encouraged by John and Maxine Hammerstein and Jerry and Bridget Murphy as they have poured their – Psalm 66:20 (NASB) hearts into this evening time of prayer at our West Oaks site. You have truly been an inspiration to me. I have seen this time of prayer become much more than a “let’s get in and out of there” kind of time. It has been so encouraging for me to be a part of a group of people that is passionately praying for the church in so many different ways. And you (if you are reading this right now) need to know you are being prayed for every Thursday evening. I want to encourage all of you who have been committed to this day of prayer to keep on going. I think it is easy to lose focus and give up after you have been with it for this long, but your faithfulness matters. Consider what it must have been like when Jesus was in the garden and He asked Peter, James and John to keep watch and pray

with him because the time was near, but when He returned, they were all sleeping. I hope you are like me when I say, “I don’t want to be the one sleeping when Christ comes back.” In the same way, I feel as though we have been asked to keep watch and pray. I am encouraged by all of you who have remained faithful to the challenge because your prayers are being heard. Personally, I have seen God answer your prayers concerning my dad. But I also know our church has seen a difference in the lives of many who are growing in their faith as they pursue Christ. There has also been a difference in the generosity of those who worship with us. Even as many of our prayers are being answered, I want to encourage all of us to remain faithful to our Savior. Jesus is the reason we give. He is also the reason we grow. Our desire is to be like Christ, and that means we do the things that Christ did. As I was praying with the folks as West Oaks last Thursday evening, I was overwhelmed by the fact that there are so many of you who have given, and continue to give, your lives to the work of the Gospel. You are leaders in ministry, in your workplace, and even in your home and families. You are making a difference because of your faithfulness to the call God has given you. I am so blessed to be serving alongside so many of you as you are leading others. My encouragement to you is to keep your focus on who you are as a follower of Christ. God is doing an incredible work through you and those who are the faithful!

“Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer nor His lovingkindness from me.”

Serving the Homeless

Youths Travel to Join in Outreach By Dave Mullen

W

hen Vanessa Puleo told me, “I have 30 students from Plano, Texas, who are coming to help out with the downtown homeless ministry!” my initial response was, “Great!” Silently, though, I was praying, “Lord, where are we going to use 30 people for our relatively small outreach?” God gave me peace that everything would work out fine. I had no idea that they would be such a blessing beyond our expectations. The downtown homeless ministry, formally named the Distributed Ministry to History Center Park, is an evangelistic outreach to the downtrodden and less fortunate in Orlando. We have been meeting with the homeless there for nearly six years. The ministry has grown from a few people passing out coffee and sandwiches to about a dozen or more of us ministering every other Wednesday night. When I first spoke with Casey Cockrell, the mission trip leader for the mostly junior high-aged team, I was immediately impressed by his gracious and energetic attitude. I thought to myself, Now

here is a man who has got it going on for the Lord! Over the course of a few weeks, a couple of phone calls and several e-mails, we set the game plan for the June 24 outing. Casey and his team, all members of the First Baptist Church of Plano, Texas, arrived at 7:15 p.m. in two large white vans at the Denny’s in Casselberry. The rear parking lot of Denny’s is our staging area and carpooling jump-off point. Sure enough, 30 very energetic and anxious young adults and a handful of weary, but highly alert, parents and chaperones filed out of the vans. After some quick introductions and the transferring of supplies from vehicle to vehicle, we quickly set some expectations on the evening and assigned various groups to their appointed tasks. As is our custom, we all gathered in a circle as Casey led us in a prayer for the Lord to bless the evening. Thank God, there was no rain! By 7:30 p.m., we were on the road and headed downtown. Just before 8 p.m., we arrived at our parking area, where we quickly unloaded our supplies of clothing, toiletries, blankets and bags of food. Casey’s team was a huge blessing in helping

It was a wonderful time in the Lord. We got to meet new friends and serve others, all to the glory of the Lord!

Students and chaperones from Plano, Texas, joined us for worship after serving homeless and street people in downtown Orlando.

to carry and cart the supplies half a block away to the park, in front of the Orlando History Center museum. Once there, we found around 40 to 50 homeless and street people in the park outside the museum awaiting our arrival. The homeless people consider “gator park,” as they call it due to the statues of alligators there, one of their stomping grounds. When you don’t have a regular home to go to, a place like the History Center Park is a welcome refuge from a long day of walking the streets of Orlando in the hot sun. I must say that we were impressed with the way the team from Plano pitched in to help serve the food, snacks and water. Several of the girls assisted with distributing the women’s clothes, and a group of the young guys helped with men’s clothes. Other groups helped with the toiletries, and a few guys distributed socks and new underwear. The adults were working right alongside us and them the whole time. It was special to see them interacting with the homeless and street folks just as we were. I believe the folks downtown were especially blessed to see so many young people eager to help them. I was surprised to see the group gather around one of our worship leaders, Dave Henry. Dave is an accomplished guitarist whom God has gifted with a special talent for worship. The wonderful surprise was that the mission team was here in Orlando to perform as a choir for a singing engagement. As the night wore on and the supplies that we had were distributed, the worship team behind Dave began to grow until almost the whole team was there singing with him! Dave was so blessed by them that he had pictures taken, which is rare because the folks downtown are shy about doing that. At our call to formal worship, we invited the homeless folks to join us as we praised the Lord for several songs. Afterward, one of our members, Dave Owens, delivered a beautiful message from Scripture to the folks that stayed behind to hear the Good News. The rest of us also sat in a semicircle to listen to Dave along with our friends from Plano. After Dave’s message, he invited anyone who had not yet received Christ to come forward for a prayer of salvation. Thankfully, those present professed to know the Lord already, so we opened up to pray for those who had various needs. Pastor Jerry of First Baptist Church of Plano led in praying for the people who had come forward. After we had prayed for those wanting prayer, we hung out with the street folks for a little while longer. Then we packed up our gear and headed back to our cars, bidding the homeless and street folks a good night, telling them we would see them in two weeks. Back at our cars, we passed around the hugs and good-byes to our new friends and family from Plano, thanking them for the tremendous blessing they had bestowed on us. They headed back to their hotel to prepare for their next mission adventure in Central Florida while the rest of us headed for Denny’s and home. Overall, it was a wonderful time in the Lord. We got to meet new friends and serve others, all to the glory of the Lord!

Serving at Ronald McDonald House “We were honored to serve the families there through making food. We took our young children and lots of cookies to ice and decorate for the families. We could feel the love being prepared in these home-cooked meals for those facing extreme difficulties and sadness away from the comfort of their homes. This was a way to bring some of that comfort from home as they gathered around the tables to enjoy the love poured into those meals especially for them. Thank you for the opportunity to serve with fellow Northlanders at such an amazing place, caring for those unable to care for themselves as they pour out their hearts and energy to their sick children.” — Bonnie Gamble and family

Volunteers needed Sundays Beginning Sunday, July 26, The Ronald McDonald House in Orlando at 2201 Alden Road (near the Orlando Science Center) will be joining the live webcast of Northland’s Sunday 6 p.m. service, worshiping together in a relaxed family environment. Friendly volunteers are needed one Sunday per month to serve as hosts to greet worshipers, serve communion, distribute Northland News, etc. Children are welcome! It’s a great opportunity for families to serve together. Details: Robert Andrescik (robert.andrescik@ northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7147)

So people have no excuse for what they do.” This means that everyone has the chance to know God. That’s good news!

Permission Evangelism: When to Talk, When to Walk, by Michael L. Drawing from his experience on both sides of the evangelical fence, Simpson offers a powerful alternative approach to outreach. Learn to articulate your salvation story as the amazing, compelling adventure it really is! Reason to Believe: A Response to Common Objections to Christianity, by R.C. Sproul With his trademark passion for truth and for intellectual rigor, Sproul works through 10 common objections to Christianity. This is no collection of pat answers. Sproul challenges the skeptic and encourages the believer. More Ready Than You Realize, by Brian D. McLaren McLaren’s call for spiritual friendship is at once innovative timeless. It is innovative because “modern” evangelism often seems to be focused on ideas like conversion, conquest, war, proofs, arguments and so on. Spiritual friendship focuses, instead, on ideas like conversation, influence and even dance. This is one of McLaren’s favorite descriptions, as true dance has no winner or loser, but is, instead, an interactive experience in which both parties must cooperate. McLaren’s ideas are timeless in that they share a remarkable similarity with what Jesus taught. Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality, by Donald Miller Miller’s fresh and original voice may change the way Christians view the status quo of faith and build a bridge to seekers who believe that organized religion doesn’t meet their needs.

Volunteers Make a Difference for Sri Lanka Reconciliation

M

ore than 75 people from Northland volunteered their time and talents to the 2009 U.S. Open World Championships of Martial Arts at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort recently. On behalf of those volunteers, the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) will make a donation to the Sri Lanka Reconciliation Conference. This was not the volunteers’ only motivation, though. They got to be salt and light in the world in front of more than 2,000 competitors from 37 countries in two days! That’s not all. James Li, Northland’s director of security, and his team from Fortress Hill (Northlanders Adam Lytle, Matt Jones and Charlie Beck) were part of the competition. They made it to the finals, which will be broadcast on ESPN2 on July 19. James and his team came in second place in his division, which is amazing, as he has not competed for 10 years. Congratulations, James! And thank you, volunteers!

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Worship focus:

Challenges to Christianity: Intellectual Challenges

...........................................................................

Doesn’t Science Make Scripture Obsolete? Scripture focus:

Romans 1:20 (nasb)

Worship Christ today as the Spirit of revelation. He came to reveal His salvation to us.

.................................................................................................................................................

Summary prayer:

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Father, fulfill Your promise to us in our time, that the earth would be filled with the knowledge of Your glory, as the waters cover the sea (Habakkuk 2:14).

...........................................................................

Notes:

NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Intellectual Challenges | “It’s All Just Personal Opinion” (Postmodernism)

| Exodus 32:1-6, 21-24, 35
