ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

A Faith on Fire Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

A

friend of mine who worships in Mount Dora has just started reading the Bible. He told me recently that he has completed the Gospel of John and is now pressing on into new books of Scripture. He said that God is really speaking to him and showing him things that he needs to know. He even shared about a dream he had of serving the Lord in a mighty way. This man’s faith is catching on fire. What is your faith like? If you are a believer in Christ, the Holy Spirit is inside you. He is encouraging, challenging, even tugging at you to commune with God through the Word, prayer, service and worship. You will not be truly content until you are seeking after God. The Holy Spirit

longs to work in and through you. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart” (NIV). Are you delighting in God? “Delight yourself in the Lord” doesn’t mean “I accepted Jesus as my Savior” or “I go to church.” It means “I love Him, I want to be with Him, and I want to share His love with other people.” Deuteronomy 30:20 exhorts us to “hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life” (NIV). Is Jesus your life? We have some great places where you can fan the flame of your faith. Whether the Tuesday morning men’s Bible study, the Wednesday evening women’s group, Mount Dora home groups, Sunday morning serve teams or projects in our community, there are venues where you and your family can grow in your faith in Christ. Go to Northland at Mount Dora’s information table for a complete menu of faith-building options, or e-mail me (bill.chapman@northlandchurch.net). Take encouragement from my friend in Mount Dora. Spend time alone with God. Read your Bible every day if you can. Talk to Jesus regularly in prayer. Get in fellowship with other Christians. Use your resources and talents to serve Him (my friend is serving at an upcoming Helping Hands project!). Make your relationship with Him number one in your life. Your faith will catch on fire! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

See, the nation of Israel had all these amazing things occur in their midst, and they still forgot who it was that was doing those things and why. They forgot who He said they were. Church-wide Backpack Drive

Help Those in Need

I

t’s that time of year when kids gear up to head back to school. It’s also time to shop for others and to teach your children about giving supplies to those in need. We will hold a church-wide backpack drive at Northland the weekend of August 8 to 10, when you can do just that. What can I do to help children in need for their school year? Fill a backpack, which will go to a family/child in need. How do I do that? Purchase a backpack and fill it with supplies. Leave it behind your car during the worship service you attend the weekend of August 8 to 10. Teams will pick them up while you are in service. What do I put in the backpack? School supplies! Pencils, ruler, paper, notebooks, anything that can be used for the school year (see suggested supplies list below). What if I have a child who needs supplies? If you are a struggling family and would like assistance in getting your child/children school supplies, e-mail me (vanessa.puleo@northlandchurch.net) to sign up as a recipient. What if I know a family in need of supplies? Contact me (vanessa.puleo@northlandchurch.net) with the family’s name and contact information so we can connect with them to find out their specific needs. SUGGESTED SUPPLIES FOR YOUR BACKPACK * 12-inch ruler (plastic or wood) * Scissors * Crayons * Standard glue sticks (0.2- to 0.3-ounce) * Standard eraser * Pack of No. 2 pencils * Pocket folders * Wide-ruled filler paper * Subject, 150-page spiral notebook * Pencil sharpener * Washable markers * Colored pencils * 8- to 10-pack medium ballpoint pens

My name is: __________________________________________________

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to the Beehive! I’m Buzz. Stick with me during our family worship service, and we’ll learn more about who God is and what He has done!

Today we worship God, who never changes. Some people will change their minds about who they think God is, but He will always be who He says He is in the Bible.

“Immutable” means never changing, or unable to be changed. People can change their minds and make up things about who God is, but God is immutable – He never changes! Bzzz. Bzzz.

Juan who?

Today’s buzzword is TRUE! I heard it _____________ times. I think it’s important to God because __________________________________________________

Answer: GOD NEVER CHANGES!

Making False Gods Exodus 32:1-6, 21-24, 35 Sometimes people make up a god in their minds and then think that it is real. That’s what happened to God’s people while they were waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments. They wanted a leader and were tired of waiting for Moses. They told Moses’ brother, Aaron, “Come. Make us a god that will lead us. Moses brought us up out of Egypt. But we don’t know what has happened to him.” Aaron let the people build a statue made of gold. It looked like a calf. They danced around it and worshiped it. The people believed that this false god was a real god. Moses could not understand how they could have made such a wrong choice against the one true God.

Draw a picture of something the one true God has done for you.

Opportunities to Prepare For Marriage or refocus on Your Existing One In our world, investments are often thought of as being strictly monetary. But as believers, we know better. God values relationship - He is one! And the relationship between a husband and wife is the anchor of many lives. So investing in this relationship makes a lot of sense. We invest in relationship when we focus on it, and give it time and attention. So if you are married, or planning to be married, invest in that relationship. Northland offers ongoing opportunities for you to plan toward, focus on, or improve your marriage.

irst Peter was written to Christians who were struggling with how to live for Jesus in the midst of a culture that considered them to be outcasts. They found themselves to be out of step with a world that was increasingly hostile to the Gospel. Peter gave them encouragement and practical advice on how to be examples of God’s grace and purity in the midst of a society that opposed them and their beliefs. First Peter may be one of the most practical letters in all of the New Testament for Christians living in post-Christian America. No registration is necessary. Just show up. Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Worship focus:

Challenges to Christianity: Intellectual Challenges

...........................................................................

Postmodernism … Isn’t It All Just Personal Opinion? Scripture focus:

Exodus 32:1-6, 21-24, 35 (nasb)

.................................................................................................................................................

Exodus 32:1-6 Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” Aaron said to them, “Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” Now when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.” So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Exodus 32:21-24, 35 Then Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought such great sin upon them?” Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn; you know the people yourself, that they are prone to evil. For they said to me, ‘Make a god for us who will go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.” Then the LORD smote the people, because of what they did with the calf which Aaron had made.

Notes:

Worship God today for His immutability. “God is unchanging in His being, perfections, purposes, and promises, yet God does act and feel emotions, and He acts and feels differently in response to different situations.” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology)

Summary prayer: ...........................................................................

We are your people and mostly we don’t mind, except that you do not fit any of our categories… We keep pushing and pulling and twisting and turning, trying to make you fit the God we would rather have, and every time we distort you that way we end up with an idol more congenial to us. In our more honest moments of grief and pain we are very glad that you are who you are, and that you are toward us in all your freedom what you have been toward us. So be your faithful self and by your very engagement in the suffering of the world, transform the world even as we are being changed. We pray in the name of Jesus, who is the sign of your suffering love. Amen. (Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth, Prayers of Walter Brueggemann)
