ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Perspective From the Cross “Heresy,” by Clay Dunklin BY Teresa McCaskill Creative Producer, Worship

L

ast week we all joined together to create a work of art! Here you see the finished panel, titled “Constent Presence.” I spoke with Clay about the creation of this piece, as well as thoughts behind this week’s artwork (seen on the front cover), titled “Heresy.” Teresa: How did the contributions from the congregation affect the finished product? Clay: Practically speaking, I used their art as a textured element. I was able to create a multimedia project as I drew from their perspectives, adding textures and elements besides just the paint on canvas. The experience was something that was intended as worship, and the idea that will be reflected in week 5: We are one as we worship God and all of us contribute. The elements from the congregation are embedded into the panel. This is how our perspectives build on one another. There is a corporate contribution, which makes for layering and learning from each other. Our perspectives are broadened in the process. You see an explosion of color. The whole idea of this panel is not to necessarily have a visual representation of anything in particular, but more of an experience that is the culmination of the participation, contribution and involvement.

ith eloquent prose, the apostle Paul unfolds the redemptive plan of God for His people and His world. Romans 1-11 tells this story in penetrating passages. Then in the rest of Romans (chapters 12-16), Paul lays out the road map of response to God’s great grace. Read his introductory challenge to us: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1, NIV). Think about it – our response to the mercy of the cross is to offer our bodies as worship. Service to Christ is worship of Christ! When we serve Jesus and the people He loves, we are worshiping our Lord. Our prayers, our attention to the Word and our singing are completed by our service to Jesus. More than that, our faith is demonstrated through our service. Listen to James’ version of this theme: “I will show you my faith by what I do” (James 2:18b, NIV). The Holy Spirit has built such an incredible culture of service at our church. Many Northlanders are giving of their time, talent and treasure to serve Christ. And yet, many remain on the sidelines, hesitant to commit to serve Jesus. That you are reading this column should tell you something: Either it is confirming what you already experience through service to the Lord, or it is exhorting you to step out and commit a little time and energy to give back to the One who has given everything to you. There are so many ways you can serve Jesus at Northland’s Mount Dora worship site. Are you handy with a paintbrush? Join us on August 15 for a painting day at The Carpenter’s House for Children. Do you have a heart for kids? Take part in Northland’s backpack program for needy children or sign up

Teresa: Were you surprised by anything you received? Clay: I didn’t expect so much artistry, so much expression visually. I kind of expected a lot of written responses, but it was about 50-50. I was surprised by the number of pictures people drew. They were so detailed, and some would even explain in writing what they had created. It was so different for everyone – including me! I’ve never painted live in a worship service before. No one said or drew the same thing. There was such a wide variety of things they turned in. There were pleas, cries for help, praises, definite truths of God, a total spectrum. Teresa: So, on to this weekend. Talk a little bit about week 4’s panel on the front of the newspaper.

Clay: Since Pastor Joel is preaching this weekend on how to spot heresy, I wanted to reflect the darkness of heresy in my piece. This panel is designed to make you a little uncomfortable, to stir your emotions. It is also designed to fit within the finished work as a whole. By next week, there will be five panels, but let me walk you through the emotional response I am seeking to evoke in each panel. Panel 1 has more of a solemn and reflective attitude because of its emphasis on the sacrifice represented by the cross and the importance of Holy Communion. Panel 2 focuses on God’s creation and has more of a refreshing tone. I sought to portray the idea of what everything was intended to be, what it would be like if we were in the Garden of Eden, the Continued on page 14.

one thing is, I encourage you to talk with one of the folks who will be helping lead this ministry. Currently, our Student Ministries leadership team consists of Marcela Benitez, Marilee Foreman, Jon and Maxine Hammerstein, Brian Kraus, Bridget Murphy and Patti Novak. I am hoping others of you will see how you can plug in and use your gifts also. There will be many ways you can serve in Student Ministries, and if you have any questions or you would like to serve, talk to me after our worship service or call me anytime (352-989-7378). I believe God is going to do some incredible things in the lives of these teenagers, and I am thrilled to see how it unfolds on a weekly basis. Thank you to all who are willing to share your lives with teenagers. I am confident you will be blessed and encouraged daily.

s a team of adults have been meeting together for the past few weeks in order to begin a ministry to our teenagers, I have been very encouraged. They have a strong desire to have something significant for both the teens at our West Oaks site as well as the teens in our community that will encourage and lead them to a passionate life for Christ. We have been looking at what kind of ministry we want for teenagers and talking about what it will take for us to get there. The thing we have been most excited about as we have met is looking at the one thing we want for these kids. Can you remember the movie City Slickers? Three New York men head west for a cattle drive, hoping to find that one thing that satisfies. Upon arriving at the ranch, an old cowboy named Curly greets them. While they are out on the trail, Mitch (Billy Crystal) seeks the advice of Curly about the meaning of life. Curly responds by holding up his index finger and replying, “It’s all about one thing. Just one thing.” The rest of the movie, Mitch is on a quest to find out what that one thing could be. I believe an effective student ministry is all about sticking to one Student Ministries leadership team (l to r): Maxine and Jon Hammerstein, Marcela Benitez, thing. If you would like to find out what that Bridget Murphy, Patti and Tommy Novak, and Brian Kraus. (Not shown: Marilee Foreman).

Fill a Backpack for a Child in Need

Leave It Behind Your Car During Service August 8-10 for Pickup vanessa puleo Northland Local Service Projects Coordinator

T

he weekend of August 8 is already proving to be an amazing weekend of supporting children in need throughout Seminole County. All Northland locations, along with many other churches, organizations and places of faith, have come together for a time of collection and reflection. This month is a time to collect supplies for our children in need and also to reflect on the families going through hardships that could use a hand. Do you know the impact of your donation this month? More than 1,000 children are homeless in Seminole County alone, not to mention the families that are struggling financially to gather clothes and the necessary items for their children to be prepared for learning this year.

Consider filling a backpack and delivering it to your site of worship the weekend of August 8. At the Longwood site, leave the backpack behind your car, and it will be picked up. Do you have children? Make a day of it. Have them pick out the items, and talk to them about Christ’s love for others and the ways we show love by helping those in need. It is a great time to minister to those little ears around us! Do you need some ideas on what to get? Here are great items to put inside the backpack: * 12-inch ruler (plastic or wood) * Scissors * Crayons * Standard glue sticks (0.2- to 0.3-ounce) * Standard eraser * Pack of No. 2 pencils * Pocket folders * Wide-ruled filler paper * Subject, 150-page spiral notebook * Pencil sharpener * Washable markers * Colored pencils * 8- to 10-pack medium ballpoint pens

Do you or anyone you know have a child in need of a backpack this year? Contact Vanessa Puleo (407-949-7156 or vanessa.puleo@northlandchurch.net)

Leave your filled backpack donation behind your car during the worship service you attend for pick up.

Please Pray for Our August Distributed Journey! Brazil: August 6-16

T

he next Distributed Journey team to head out is traveling to the Amazon state in Brazil to play soccer in Manaus (the capital city of the Amazon state) and in several villages along the Amazon River. Northland has an ongoing partnership with Igreja Presbyteriana de Manaus, one of the largest churches in the Amazon. Igreja Presbyteriana de Manaus has some amazing ways to care for people through soccer, and we’re privileged this summer to be a part of their ministry. At the beginning of the trip, the team will travel by boat up the Amazon. In rural villages, they’ll hold smaller soccer tournaments, play games and spend time with the families who spend their lives near the banks of the world’s largest river. The second part of the trip, they head back to Manaus to support a pretty amazing ministry to street kids. Every week a former pro runs a soccer camp that attracts thousands of kids. Many of the players are living on the streets, and this program, supported by our partner gives them continuity and

hope and love. They have a place to hear about the hope bigger than soccer, found in Christ, and every week they get to see Christ’s love manifest through the tireless care given them by the volunteers running the program. The goal throughout this trip is to use the team’s presence to try to attract larger crowds, so that Igreja Presbyteriana de Manaus has a chance to serve and care for even more people than usual. Team members: Nathan Clark (team leader), Kristen Urichko, Nader Emile, Aaron Martin, Kasey Brennan, Dallas Winstead, James Turner, Christian Eissele Please pray for: • financial support for the team members. • the people they will be playing soccer with. • the safety and health of the team members. • the villagers in the Amazon and the kids in Manaus.

Answer: JESUS IS LORD!

The True Good News Galatians 1:6-12 The true Good News is that everyone who believes in Jesus belongs to the family of God forever. Paul wrote a letter to the family of God living in Galatia. People were saying things about Jesus that weren’t true. The Galatians were getting confused about the true Good News. Paul wrote, “You are turning to a different ‘Good News.’ What you are accepting is not really the Good News at all. It seems that some people have gotten you all mixed up. They are trying to twist the Good News about Christ. Brothers and sisters, here is what I want you to know. The Good News I preached is not something a human being made up. No one gave it to me. No one taught it to me. Instead, I received it from Jesus Christ. He showed it to me.”

Building a Generous Life Weekend August 1-3 Come and Learn to Relate to God’s Economy

W

hen Tropical Storm Fay struck in 2008, Rich and Jana Haussmann experienced significant damage to their home. If this storm had happened just a few years earlier, they would have been financially devastated. Instead, they had built up an emergency fund of $20,000 ten months after paying off $65,000 in debt, thanks to their participation in Financial Peace University. “FPU has been such a blessing to our family,” Rich says in the book Slash Your Debt, by Gerri Detweiler. “It feels good to be obedient to God and to know that we are good stewards of His blessings.” Doug and Colleen Allen wanted to be on the same page with their finances and learn to handle them according to biblical principles, so six months after getting married, they participated in a Crown Financial Ministries course. After they took the class, they decided to pay off their car and student loans at a faster rate and developed a budget. During their seven-year journey to get out of debt, they learned to be content with what God had provided. “Crown was so much more than a financial study, but a study that taught us to live differently than the pattern of this world, and by doing so, we have developed a closer relationship with Him,” they said. Whether your financial situation is more like the Haussmanns was, or you relate more to the Allens, or you are somewhere else on the financial spectrum, there will be something for you at the Building a Generous Life weekend taking place the weekend of August 1 to 3 at Northland. But this event is not just about money; it’s about learning to live a generous life by giving of your time, talent and treasure, says Marc McMurrin, executive director of operations for Northland. “It’s about the way you serve, and being able to affect the Kingdom and community around you.” The event is a continuation of last fall’s “Building a Generous Life” preaching series and congregation-wide study. The five classes and opportunities represented at booths that weekend meet different needs, from living debt-free, to receiving one-to-one coaching, to answers for business owners, to managing your finances, to leaving a legacy. The booths will be set up in the Longwood site’s foyer, but each site will have a representative to give information about the different classes and opportunities. Information also will be available in the “equipping” section on the Northland website. Congregants, Marc says, should come away from the weekend “knowing the church is equipping them to relate to God’s economy instead of the world’s economy, as God owns it all and wants to bless us and others through the proper management of His resources.” The financial opportunities to be represented are detailed below. FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY – LIVING DEBT-FREE Debt is all around us. More than 70 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Over 35 percent of Christian marriages end in divorce, with money problems being the number one cause. How would you like to be debt-free? Financial Peace University (FPU), a biblically based program that teaches management of money and resources in a godly way, has a long history of helping families successfully confront these problems head-on. You’ll be empowered with the practical skills and confidence needed to achieve your financial goals and experience true financial peace. How It Works This 13-week video course explains how money really works in a simple, easyto-understand style. You’ll have fun as you learn! Dave Ramsey teaches about how to save money, live on a budget,

communicate about money, eliminate debt, find bargains and experience the joy of giving. More than 650,000 families have completed FPU with amazing success. On average, they pay off $5,300 in debt and save $2,700 in 13 weeks. That’s an $8,000 change in position in 91 days! The goal of Financial Peace University is not just information; it’s transformation. Financial management is only 20 percent knowledge and 80 percent behavior. FPU helps to break the bad habits that rob people of true financial success. How to Get Started Two options are available for upcoming FPU classes: • Thursdays, August 20 through November 19, from 7 to Rich and Jana Haussmann lead the Finacial Peace University class and help many to become debt-free. 9 p.m. in room 4213-15 • Sundays, September 6 through December 13, from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. in room 4206-07 Practically speaking, the study teaches how the Bible can Look for the “LIVING DEBT-FREE” booth for details or to get help individuals succeed in the business world. CROWN FINANCIAL MINISTRIES – MANAGING YOUR FINANCES Many Christians have been taught what the Bible says about how to handle 10 percent of their income, their tithe. Although this is crucial, we need to under¬stand God’s perspective on managing the other 90 percent. Crown is an interdenominational ministry dedicated to equipping people around the world to learn, apply and teach biblical financial principles. Since 1976, Crown has taught or equipped more than 50 million people with their transforming message of faithful living. Its founder, Howard Dayton, was a member and elder of Northland as he developed this dynamic ministry.

How It Works Participants of this small group study learn what Scripture teaches about managing all of their possessions – not just their money. Scripture memorization is a key part of learning this biblical approach to creating a spending plan, establishing a debt reduction plan, and managing resources through practical exercises and accountability. Each week of the study takes an in-depth look at specific destinations in the Crown Money Map. These principles can be applied during the journey, long after the life group study is over. This study teaches more than strategy for the practical symptoms of financial bondage; it creates a long-term transformation of the heart. How to Get Started Look for the “MANAGING YOUR FINANCES” booth to get more information. Several fall classes are planned; come to the orientation for details. Orientation for Crown class participants is Tuesday, August 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Northland at Longwood fellowship hall. Crown leadership training is set for Wednesday, August 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 4204. Details and registration: Jo-Anne Holleran (jo-anne.holleran@northlandchurch.net or

TRUE NORTH FOUNDATION – LEAVING A LEGACY Have you made financial or custodial arrangements for your loved ones, should they outlive you? I know it is not something we like to think about, which is evident considering seven out of 10 people in the United States die without a will. The estates that go through probate total more than $100 billion, and the figure increases every year. Northland is providing Simple Wills to congregants through the True North Foundation.

emotions, almost a discomfort as you look at the images. Heresy can be a subtle thing. There is truth there, but it is twisted. I wanted to portray this distortion by ripping the canvas. I’ve even used ashes from burnt paper in the piece to show the destructive force of heresy. I intend it to be opposite of the feelings evoked in the first three panels. Teresa: What about next week’s panel? Clay: Next week’s panel will point us toward a future whose reality is now, God’s Kingdom coming on Earth.

Northland recently established The True North Foundation to fund special ministry projects outside the walls of Northland that support the broader distributed church. Additionally, the foundation provides legacy opportunities for the congregation through planned giving. How It Works The True North Foundation will provide attorneys to conduct Simple Wills free of charge, without conditions or requirements of appropriating any portion of one’s estate to Northland. It is the foundation’s desire to have every congregant’s estate planning in order to protect their children and the resources God has provided to their family. This is important whether you are a single parent, a young married couple or retirement age. You can sign up for the informational meeting, which will provide you with the necessary information for your next steps, and connection with an attorney to process your will. If you have a complicated estate with trusts and other tax sheltered vehicles, there would be a charge related to any additional work above and beyond a Simple Will. How to Get Started Look for the “LEAVING A LEGACY” booth and get connected with your next steps. Details: Rick Crandall (cranbarney@cfl. rr.com)

How It Works If you want someone to help you with an in-depth evaluation of your income, spending, debt, saving and giving, you can meet with a Money Map Coach. Crown’s trained volunteer Money Map Coaches will work with couples or individuals, helping to develop a personal spending plan, apply biblical principles of stewardship, build a plan to get out of debt, and achieve spiritual and financial freedom. Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Worship focus:

Challenges to Christianity: Intellectual Challenges

...........................................................................

How Can I Spot Heresy? Scripture focus:

Galatians 1:6-12 (nasb)

Worship Christ today as the Truth incarnate. Jesus came so we could know the Truth, and the Truth could set us free.

.................................................................................................................................................

I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Notes:

Summary prayer: ...........................................................................

Father, Spirit of all Truth, we know that there are other spirits in the world – evil spirits, lying spirits, spirits of confusion and deception. These spirits mislead many people by masquerading as truth. But we know that You are the Word made flesh. Give us wisdom to discern the spirits. Give us eyes to see and know Your Truth, so that our lives will bear witness to You and reflect Your love and Your life.
