ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Stepson of ‘Narnia’ Creator Teams With The Shack Author for The Chronicles of C.S. Lewis Conference By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Print and Public Relations

D

ouglas Gresham, a stepson of C.S. Lewis and co-producer of the Narnia films, is coming to Northland to host The Chronicles of C.S. Lewis conference on August 14 and 15. This twoday conference will explore Lewis’ creativity and imagination as a Christian apologist, as well as ponder the beauty and mystery of the heart of God. Joining Mr. Gresham for this exciting conference will be renowned speakers and authors Jill Briscoe and William Paul Young, as well as musical guest Sara Groves and New York actor Tony Lawton. “I am thrilled to be speaking at this conference,” says Mr. Young, author of The Shack — a modern-day classic and New York Times bestseller with more than 7 million copies in print. “The works

and

amazing

life of C.S. Lewis have deeply shaped my life and my thinking.” Douglas Gresham is an accomplished author and co-producer of “The Chronicles of Narnia” film series, including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia. He is currently working on the next installment in the series, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, scheduled for release in late 2010. Mr. Gresham is the author of Lenten Lands: My Childhood With Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis, and a biography of Lewis titled Jack’s Life: The Life Story of C.S. Lewis. Mr. Gresham will talk about how C.S. Lewis has influenced his life, both through his writings and as an adopted member of Mr. Lewis’ family. Born in New York City, the son of writers William Lindsay Gresham and Joy Davidman, Mr. Gresham moved to England with his mother and his brother in 1952 after his parents divorced. His mother married C.S. Lewis in 1956. After Mr. Gresham’s mother lost her battle with cancer in 1960, Lewis — who had adopted Douglas and his brother in 1956 — continued to raise them. When Lewis died, his estate, including the rights to the popular “Chronicles of Narnia” series, went to his stepsons. Mike Fernandez, director of the conference, says attendees will leave with a new and deeper appreciation for Lewis’ works. “You can read about C.S.

Lewis, but it’s another thing to know him personally,” he explains. “You’ll get to hear from someone who was actually close to the man. Douglas Gresham has insights that nobody else would.” To register for the conference, go to the Northland website (www.northlandchurch.net) and click on the “Events” tab. Registration is $38 in advance or $45 the day of the conference. Student and group rates are also available.

Northland at Mount Dora Cares Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

“Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.” –Philippians 2:4-7 (NIV)

A

couple of weeks ago, a Northlander from Mount Dora showed up to serve at the Lake Cares Food Pantry. A queue of hungry families lined up to receive food and personal care items. By the time the doors were closed, he and the other volunteers had served well over 100 men, women and children with basic items that would carry them through the next few days. Some had lost their jobs; some were homeless. Some were sick; many were hurting deeply. He fed them. He prayed with them. He loved on them. And in the process, this Northlander met some great fellow servants in the community. For our friend, that morning was humbling and rewarding at the same time.

Lake Cares was created by residents of Mount Dora who saw the mounting needs in the community and decided to do something about them. Some founding members are Christian; some are not. Lake Cares seeks to be a strategic resource to support the needs of hungry families hit by unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances. This is a venue where Northlanders can indeed make a difference. How can you take “the very nature of a servant” and look “to the interests of others”? You can contribute to the Mount Dora Love Collection. Each week Northlanders donate food and personal care items at the Mount Dora worship site. Those items are then distributed among Lake Cares of Mount Dora, Loaves & Fishes of Apopka and The Carpenter’s House for Children in Leesburg. We have been encouraging Mount Dora congregants to add $2, $5 or $10 to their weekly grocery bill and purchase items for the Love Collection. Northlanders from other worship sites can drop their donations off at the Longwood information desk or with their local site minister. This is a great and easy way that we can serve the hungry and hurting of Central Florida. Some of you will be led by the Holy Spirit to go beyond regular food donations. Perhaps He will inspire you to get physically involved with Lake Cares. The pantry is open on Saturdays to serve the community, but also has needs for volunteers during the week. You can give a tithe of your time to help with client intake, food sorting, prayer, whatever the need of the moment is. Thanks for caring for those Jesus cares about! Nothing We Want, Everything We Need JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

W

hat an awesome summer we have had at Northland at Oviedo. But for me, all has been overshadowed by the incredible experience of going to Swaziland, South Africa, with my wife, most of our small group, Pastor Dan Lacich, our own Marianne Testa and many other Northlanders from Longwood. We are working on putting together a short video that we will show after service in September with multiple objectives: sharing the story of God and His work in the world, raising awareness of how you can be a part of the work, and, of course, encouraging specific prayer for specific people. I am going to write several articles leading up to that weekend in reflection, on other people’s comments and experiences, and some of what I believe God was ultimately revealing to me and for us. This weekend’s sermon topic fits perfectly with this, the first one of these Africa articles. Pastor Joel’s focus is on people who say they don’t believe in Christ because of the terrible example given by Christians. I love this topic because

I know it to be true. For years I would do this while I chased the dreams of the world, and I was doing exactly what so many do: avoiding the dilemma of choice. Christianity demands a decision; you cannot “kinda” be Christian. You are, or you are not; Christ is either your Lord, or He is not. You live a life in constant surrender to the One who holds rule and rights over you, or you don’t. Now I know and will say over and over again, because I need to hear it too, that this is never done perfectly, and it is only by grace through faith that we are saved, and even that the work of sanctification is done by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit alone, not by my trying harder. But that being said, there is still a clear dividing line between me then and me now. Now I know He is Lord of my life, and back then I wanted to be! Often we are looking at others to excuse ourselves, but we are told in Scripture that we will all stand before the throne of God alone. We will not be compared to others, only to Him. All our works will be judged, and we will weep over our sins, but then, He will wipe our tears away, and we will enter His Kingdom rejoicing only because of the work of His Son. Praise God! But what would happen if while we were here, we were living a life in submission and surrender to the King of Kings, allowing Him to constantly work in and through us by the power of the Holy Spirit, for His glory? What if we lived a life that said, “Jesus is Lord of my life; He is the King?” Well, that is exactly what I saw in Africa. There were so many people without anything we have, anything we think we need, but in reality, we only want, and they were joyful in and expectant of the Lord in a way I have rarely seen.

“ I saw something in Africa that I want more and more of: people who get their very life from Christ. ... Most of the people I met in Africa truly had “nothing we want, and everything we need!”

5

I heard a woman living in poverty say to me that she had nothing to worry about, saying the birds of the air do not worry, so neither should she; God provides. In nothing, she had everything. I know why Christ said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24, NASB). We who have too much have little need for the only thing we truly need: Christ. Maggie said over and over, “We all have the same ultimate need: Christ!” I saw something in Africa that I want more and more of: people who get their very life from Christ. It is not the having nothing that matters; that is asceticism, a false idol as well. It is the having everything in Christ that matters. Paul said it clearly in Philippians 4:11 (NASB): “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.” Most of the people I met in Africa truly had “nothing we want, and everything we need!” >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

news@westoaks Proverbs 27:17 Golf Classic TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister

W

hen you think of a golf outing with your friends, you normally are not thinking about accountability or sharpening each other as followers of Christ. But this is exactly what happened last weekend at a men’s retreat hosted by a group of guys, including Zack Fulmer, who want the best for their friends. The weekend included two rounds of golf, a seafood dinner buffet (I must admit, I ate my fair share!), a few messages that focused on each of these guys growing in Christ and being committed to one another, and finally, just plain ol’ fun! – Proverbs 27:17 (NIV) On Saturday night, we had the opportunity to hear from Kennan Burch, founder of Dream Builders, encouraging men to unleash the dreams God has inside each of them. As we listened to Kennan share his heart, I looked around the room, and every man was involved. I don’t know about you, but when I hear someone who is passionate about something, I could listen to him for hours. But for me, what was most encouraging was his story, and what God is doing in and through him as this ministry reaches men in a totally different way, allowing them to dream. Part of what struck me about that Saturday evening, as Kennan talked about others who are beginning to see their dreams come alive, is that this weekend began as a vision of a few guys and is now becoming a reality. I am encouraged

NEXT WEEKEND! Ladies Night Out

about this because it is exactly what I have always said to those of us at West Oaks – do whatever it is God lays on your heart to do, and we will support you in any way we can. So for Zack and a few other guys who put this weekend together once a year, thank you for pursuing a dream God has given you. Thank you for letting others be a part of what God is speaking into your heart. I think it would be great, and I know Zack would be honored to sit down with anyone who would want to hear how this vision for guys began. And I believe each of you has something God wants you to do. The heart behind this weekend is Proverbs 27:17, which says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (NIV). There is a reason we desire to be sharpened by others, and that is to expand the Kingdom of God. So the vision of this is expanding where there are many guys bringing their friends, coworkers and even family members. And even though the desire is to sharpen one another in Christ, it also gives these guys the opportunity to use this weekend as a way to bring their nonbelieving friends into an environment where they know they will be cared for and loved outside the walls of the church. As the vision for this ministry grows, I am sure you will be hearing more about this over the next few years. But I also want to encourage each one of you to pursue that ministry God is calling you into. We will stand with you as you follow through with that call. It really is an encouragement to see how God is using one of our own at West Oaks to make a difference in the lives of men. Keep on growing!

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

One Heart; Many Hands Called for Local Service By Nancy Cummings

D

r. Joel C. Hunter could not have said it any clearer than he did this past weekend. During his sermon, he stated, “How you treat creation says everything about how you love God.” How profound. And how we do love His creation – including His people, their homes, their fences and their yards! It is hard at times expressing our passion to help others build fences, hang drywall, paint homes, install smoke detectors and repair windows. Often, people simply smile and nod as we go about our way sweating, huffing and puffing, and getting as dirty as the grassless back yard. What most do not get to savor is the moment when, after a day of laboring beside each other, a home owner accepts an invitation to attend Northland, when a neighbor across the street asks to be a part of whoever we are because no one has entered his or her area to simply help those in need, when a young man, after hours of watching us from a few houses down, comes over and accepts Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior based on what he saw us do for others. A team of nine, dubbed the Northland SWAT team, did just that two weeks ago. We came together by what appeared to be misfortune on the surface. Just two months earlier, we were slated to return to Lagniappe Presbyterian Church in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Our original team of 29 individuals ranged in age from 13 to 50-something. We were really looking forward to going back to the coastal area to help in the restoration efforts as well as check on friends we have made through the years. Along the way to work one day, a funny thing happened. We received a phone call that LPC was no longer involved in construction. We had been planning our trip with great excitement for months. What would we do now? Whom could we serve on such short notice? Within hours, we were connected to Vanessa Puleo, who was assigning service coordinators for a larger outside organization, One Heart – Many Hands. After openly discussing whether a group as small and semiskilled as ours could contribute, we were officially signed up as an actual working team. Everyone was thrilled to hear that we were still going to get to use power tools! Our servant’s hearts were beating rapidly!

It took but a few short moments for our team to realize that we had been called together for something much larger than this week of service. Following our morning devotion on day one, it became apparent that God had brought together a cohort of people who truly feel called for local service, who passionately believe that intergenerational service is vital to strengthen our community and our families, and who want to answer God’s call right here, right now. Living out our team motto (Serving Willing Adapting Together) became something we wanted to do not just this particular week, but together as long as we can. As a team, we chose to preach the Gospel without saying a word (St. Francis of Assisi). We were so blessed as we were able to be the hands and feet of Christ, laying foundations wherever we went (Matthew 7:24). We are not exactly sure how our actions affected those we met, but we know the footers were dug deep and now houses can be built that will never be washed away (Matthew 7:27). Read on as we share how God moved in our hearts and lives this week. “I had a strong sense of ministry with others combined with the building mission. I feel on a local level, there is much more needed and hope more groups like ours can be started for future events.” – Tim (husband, father of two youths on team) “I enjoyed working with my family and meeting new people. Also, I liked knowing we were doing something good for other people that could not do for themselves.” – Sydney, 13

“I like meeting and making new friendships. I also enjoyed watching my family do manual labor!” – Sami, 16 “Our first day together, we boldly went before the throne of God and prayed that we would be challenged, stretched and that our faith would be increased. We met each challenge and never wavered. All we did was show up, and God did the rest. The blessings that were bestowed upon our team, on our families and those we served are yet to be revealed.” – Dawn “Our family is not known for their handyman skills, so we came into this week very unsure. ... Every time I thought, We can’t do this, God answered by saying, “I know, but I can.” We came to love the bond our group developed and believe we were all put together to do more work like this here. Our family enjoyed bonding over projects that we rarely do together. We have so many friends asking to join us next time.” – Paula (wife, mother of two youths on team)

Today we worship Jesus as the perfect Judge. He is the only One who knows what is in our hearts. When we are true to Jesus, that’s worship.

Answer: HYPOCRITES

Don’t Be A Hypocrite Matthew 23:13; 7:5 A hypocrite is someone who pretends to be a noble or faithful person, but is actually not. Hypocrites often judge others while ignoring their own actions. Jesus did not want us to be hypocrites because that can make it harder for others to put their trust in God. Jesus told the hypocrites, “You pretenders! You shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter. And you will not let those enter who are trying to.” Jesus warned about judging ourselves as better than others. He said, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” He was teaching us not to be hypocrites and judge others because we are no better than they!

First Peter was written to Christians who were struggling with how to live for Jesus in the midst of a culture that considered them to be outcasts. They found themselves to be out of step with a world that was increasingly hostile to the Gospel. Peter gave them encouragement and practical advice on how to be examples of God’s grace and purity in the midst of a society that opposed them and their beliefs. Sit, Walk, Stand, by Watchman Nee Watchman Nee takes an inspiring look at Ephesians, the book where he found the highest spiritual truths concerning the Christian life. Summarizing the letter into three parts, you’ll learn what it means to “sit” with Christ, “walk” as a Christian in the world, and “stand” up to Satan. Conviction Without Compromise: Standing Strong in the Core Beliefs of the Christian Faith, by Norman Geisler and Ron Rhodes Do you find it difficult to talk to fellow believers who hold different doctrinal viewpoints? Exploring “In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity,” the authors show you how to defend core beliefs such as Scripture’s inerrancy and disagree about issues such as women’s role in the church—all in the spirit of love. How Do You Walk the Walk You Talk?, by Kay Arthur How does a person walk the walk he talks without hypocrisy in a way that lets others see the difference that genuine faith makes in a person’s life? This is what you will see for yourself as you look at truth in the book of Ephesians and discover what God has to say about your walk—living out in practical ways what it really means to be “in Christ” with Christ in you. Becoming a Contagious Christian, by Bill Hybels and Mark Mittelberg In Becoming a Contagious Christian, you will discover why we are called to be contagious Christians, how authenticity, compassion and sacrifice help us relate to seekers, and how to clearly share the Gospel with those you love.

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Challenges to Christianity: I Have My Reasons “I Don’t Believe in Christ Because of Christians!” (The Hurdle of Hypocrisy) Scripture focus:

Matthew 23:13; 7:5 (nasb)

Worship focus:

..................................................................................................................................................

......................................................................

Matthew 23:13

Worship Christ today as the Righteous Judge. He alone sees what is in a man’s heart, and He alone has the power to forgive.

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. “

Summary prayer:

Matthew 7:5

......................................................................

“You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Keep us, O God, from all pettiness, Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with faultfinding and leave off all self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face, without self-pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment, and always generous. Let us always take time for all things, and make us grow calm, serene and gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, to be straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize that it is the little things of life that create differences, that in the big things of life we are as one. And, O Lord God, let us not forget to be kind!
