4 Awarded Joel C. Hunter Scholarship
T
his year the Joel C. Hunter Scholarship was awarded to four Northlanders: Barbara M. Coffee, Alyssa Gantt, Kaley McCann and Gabriel John Rodriguez. The Joel C. Hunter Scholarship was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. Below is a little about each of this year’s recipients.
Barbara M. Coffee
give her greater credibility as she continues to work in child advocacy. She serves on the Citizen’s Leadership Committee for the Central Florida Advocacy Center and is open to any opportunity that reveals itself to continue to volunteer or even to take a government position that assists in child advocacy issues. “I have more than book knowledge about the injustices that prevail worldwide in the child protection systems in place for abused and neglected children,” she wrote in her application. “I have a dream and gifts that I know are not an accident,” wrote Barbara, who speaks five languages and one dialect. “I know God will provide a way for me to accomplish His plans. “My life is dedicated to God. He is the only reason I am here, why I have the gifts I do. ... I know God creates amazing things out of bad things and built my character to be able to be ready for whatever task He has for me. I know nothing in my life is an accident.” Barbara, who has been attending Northland for a dozen years, started the Divorce Recovery Ministry at Northland. She is receiving a $1,000 scholarship to assist in her studies.

Barbara, of Winter Park, has applied at Northcentral University, in Prescott Valley, Arizona, to pursue a doctorate in psychology with a specialization in marriage and family issues. She has a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor’s degree in business and languages from Florida State University. Barbara, a psychotherapist, has had a private practice in Winter Park since 1993 with a focus on marital and family therapy and trauma. A doctorate degree in psychology, she says, will
Alyssa, an Oviedo High School graduate from Winter Springs, is headed for the University of Florida this fall. At college, she plans to major in English, a passion of hers, and minor in international studies, with a goal of attending law school. “International studies would benefit me in my dream to work for
International Justice Mission,” she wrote. “Ever since [IJM President and CEO] Gary Haugen came to Northland to speak about IJM, I’ve felt a strong calling to join the cause. I believe God is calling me to be active in any form of human rights law.” Alyssa has been a youth leader for the middle school girls at LUGRox for the past three years and was part of the setup crew her freshman year. She has been on four Distributed Journeys with Northland: to Jamaica in summer 2006, and to Egypt in summer 2007, 2008 and 2009. “On the mission trips I’ve participated in, I’ve learned that God’s Word must be shared, and can be, even in playing sports like on the Egypt trip,” she wrote. “But most of all, I’ve realized that I am nothing without Him. My goal as I enter the next chapter of my life is that I can be that ‘light’ and that I can effectively share the awesome love of Jesus Christ.” She received $2,000 toward her studies.
Kaley McCann Kaley McCann, of Longwood, is entering her sophomore year at Flagler College in St. Augustine this fall. Kaley, who attends Northland and is an associate member of Good News Church while away at school, is pursuing a psychology degree with a double minor in youth ministry and sociology. “Lord willing, my goal is to become a Christian counselor and pursue a graduate degree,” she wrote in her application. “I feel that Christian counseling is what I am called to do. I want to become a Christian counselor because I truly

‘Well, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?’ JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
T
his is the second Africa article written in preparation for our upcoming “Story-sharing Sunday,” September 20 after both services, where we will show pictures and videos of the trip we went on and the work we were involved in so you can begin to pray about your involvement, as part of the Oviedo congregation, in next year’s trip as a fellow sojourner, prayer warrior or supply gatherer. The title, “Well, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?” is from a statement made by one of the CHE (Community Health Evangelist) women we met there. Maggie and I had been doing home visits each day with these women who are a part of this CHE team that goes home with the children attending the school in an attempt to get a better idea about their family life and home situation, what the real needs are and so on. These women go out three or more times a week and visit homes in the community that they live in themselves, and sit with the mothers or grandmothers there, talking with them about their life and hardships, and delivering them the message of hope that is in Christ. Maggie and I were humbled each time we would go and amazed by the boldness these women had, always speaking truth in love, but never afraid or hesitant to speak it. We were forced to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, words, even to fight back tears and fears in a way we never have before. We were strained to seek what the Lord is doing all around us, even when it seems impossible to understand. We were hard-pressed to find the hope and faithfulness in Christ that these women had in the face of suffering and desperation. But we found Him there, in the smiles and song of the families and
children we visited, and in the Good News they shared with us about their Savior. We learned about an entirely different kind of faith in Christ, a faith that is “sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1, NIV). Maggie had mentioned to me, and we talked at great length about how these women were modern-day apostles, walking the streets of the town ministering to the sick, widows, orphans, the hungry and the poor. One day while returning from a visit, Maggie and I shared this thought with them, and as simply and humbly and matterof-factly as one could be, one woman responded, “Well, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?” And she just kept on walking to the next house. Maggie and I just smiled at each other and realized we had just heard the voice of Christ himself. “Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded” is the last part of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:20). So what did He command us to do? Love Him, then one another! “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:40). Then He tells His disciples that it is by the love they have for one another that others will know that they are His (John 13:35)! Pastor Joel is sharing today from 1 John 4, and I love the petitioning in verses 11 and 12: “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us” (NIV). These women get that, in its simplest, purest form. Love rules! So my question for each of us is, Are we? Are we, as Nike coined, just doing it, or are we getting caught up in the who, where, how and when logistics and not doing it at all? Are we being led by the Spirit in such a way that whatever He is leading us to do is what we are after, or is that too supernatural and unrealistic? Before you answer that, think about this: When we asked the women how they planned their days and weeks out, which kids to go home with and which houses to visit or return to, their response came just as quickly and honestly as the last one: “We get together each morning and pray about it. We ask the Lord to lead us, and He does.” I thought, What? Huh? And while I was trying to figure that out, they just kept on walking and doing the work I so often only plan, or talk or read about – the work of Christ!

Four kids had gone through a six-week study on baptism, led by Susan Hartnett, and every one of them knew the significance of what he or she was doing and why he or she was doing it. In addition to the baptisms, we shared Communion together to remember Christ and the reason we get baptized. As we shared Communion together with the five that were just baptized, there was an overwhelming sense that God was present and real to all there. And we all know when that happens, amazing things take place. We see that frequently when we worship together on the weekends. But seeing kids and families sharing Communion together allows us to see how God wants to bring the family together to reflect His Kingdom. W
e came to the Dominican Republic to build a church for the people. God had prepared our hearts and our bodies to serve Him. The first day, the sound of hammers, saws and drills filled the area like music. Most of us did not know what we were building, only that the pieces of wood had to be cut to certain lengths, some with angles, and then the pieces started fitting together. Some people would hold the pieces in place, and others would fasten them with screws and nails. Mistakes were made and corrected. Everyone worked together. On the sixth day, all the pieces that we built were loaded onto a truck, and the whole group traveled by bus following the truck. As we arrived, Dominican children gathered around to watch while we assembled the pieces one by one. First the side panels, then a window and a door, then the roof panels. In about six hours, we finished, and that is how we built a church. But let me back up a little and take a closer look. While we were assembling a church building, God was building the church. He was showing us that we do not need to know everything that He is doing; we just need to do our part. He showed us what it looks like for the body of believers to work together and that if we are assembled in just the right way, we are His church. He showed that when we make mistakes and admit we are weak, He is strong, and that if we work together, we can accomplish more than we can apart. He showed us that it is more important to work together than it is to just get it done. Even if it takes longer, the church He is building in us will have a stronger foundation. Finally, He showed us that all He needed us to do is say, “Yes, I will go!” He did the rest. It would be impossible to describe all that He did, but some people in our group have written a few words that I would like to share with you all. Thank you for praying and giving. If you see Karl and Lori Droppers at church, let them know you appreciate their leadership for so many years to our middle school children by leading this trip.

Did you know… …when surveyed, believers indicate that they engage in Scripture an average of not more than once each week? And yet, according to statistics, it requires at least four times per week of Bible engagement to produce real life change? This fall, the focus of Northland’s equipping program will be to provide opportunities for Northlanders to engage in God’s Word in new ways together. In a joint venture with the American Bible Society, on the weekends of August 28 to 30 and September 5 to 7, a Bible Engagement Center will be set up in the foyer for all congregants to experience. I want to be able to speak the truth to my clients.” Kaley has served the middle schoolers at LUGRox as part of the setup crew and as an Area Bible Study trainer. She also led a weekly Bible study for a group of middle school girls. Her senior year, she served as a captain and led a Bible study. Since 2006, she has worked in child care and Yah Zone for Northland, and has returned for the summer. Kaley has a servant’s heart, and is on the worship team for Good News and rehearses with Northland’s worship team while home. “I began searching for other ways to serve the Lord with my talents; singing automatically came to mind,” she wrote. “I have a heart for worship and would love to be able to minister to people in that way. In order to serve others, I look for opportunities to use the resources God has given me, whether it’s through singing, dancing, playing my violin or picking up trash after the LUGRox middle schoolers. “Whether it is serving through watching children or singing for His glory, I find a peace in Him that can never be thwarted.” Kaley is receiving $1,000 toward her schooling.
Gabriel John Rodriguez Gabriel, a Northlander from Orlando, will be a junior at Wheaton College in Illinois this fall. He attended Southeastern University in Lakeland from August 2008 till this May. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business/economics. “I chose this major because it develops skills that I will utilize in pursuing my life goals,” he wrote. “After college, I wish to work cross-culturally, preferably in a developing nation. In line with the book Great Commission Companies, I wish to create or develop a Kingdom-driven business that helps the locals and ministers to the whole person. I wish to take part in the emerging role that business has in missions to maximize the effectiveness of my life’s ministry internationally.” His service has included volunteering in a monthly homeless outreach partnering with Lighthouse Ministries, assisting with the creation of an India exhibit in Exposure, Southeastern University’s annual mission conference, serving on the leadership committee of the 2008 5k for hurricane relief, and participating in Fusion community service projects. If Gabriel wasn’t in church, he could often be found on the streets of Lakeland serving the homeless. “My future ambitions are oriented around this,” he wrote. “I do not want to see others in pain and simply feel sympathy. I want to do something and suffer with them through their brokenness. I want to create things that will outlive me and implement ideas that will impact lives way beyond a lifetime’s span. I want my hand in a variety of areas – business, missions, public policy and economics. I wish to do hard things for the supremacy of Christ.” Gabriel received $1,000 to help him pursue his studies. – Melissa Bogdany

LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you. Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” 1 John 4:7-12 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
