VOLUME 10, ISSUE 34

The Father has no desire to punish His children. They have already been punished excessively by their own inner and outward waywardness. The Father wants simply to let them know that the love they have searched for in such distorted ways has been, is, and always will be there for them. — Henri Nouwen

ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Come to the Water And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. –1 Peter 3:21 (NIV)

even people were baptized recently at the home of Ken and Diane Watkins, with Pastor Gus Davies officiating. You, too, may be baptized by immersion or sprinkling as a public profession of your personal faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life (Matthew 28:19). The next baptism is Sunday, September 13. See page 12 for details.

The Night of Power Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

“I

am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26, NIV). Strong words from a strong Savior. Words of power that demand a response. Northland at Mount Dora exists so that those who have not yet chosen to be included can believe in Jesus and never die, and that the included can live out His resurrection power. Come join us on Wednesday, September 9 for The Night of Power. World-renowned martial arts expert James Sang Lee will perform feats of power, strength and skill on the Mount Dora stage. Mr. Lee brings a thriving faith in Jesus Christ, a God-given prowess in martial arts and a powerful testimony of the love of God in his life. He has served on the stunt cast of many a Hollywood film and has won numerous victories in the world of competitive martial arts. He loves the Lord and longs to use his gifts to bring others to know the One who is “the resurrection and the life.” This is a special youth event (but adults are welcome, too!). If you have a child in grade, middle or high school, you need to bring him or her to The Night of Power. Invite your friends from other churches. Invite your unchurched friends and their kids. They will be entertained, encouraged and challenged to turn to Christ. Folks from all Northland worship sites are welcome. Come and let God speak to you and the ones you love on The Night of Power. The event is free. Child care is not provided. Event details: Bill Chapman

Reality JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

I

t has been about a month now since the mission trip to Swazi, and I have to say it has been hard coming back for many reasons. It was hard getting good sleep again, hard not seeing the people I spent so much time with, hard not having such quiet and darkness at night, and hard not hearing the voices of the kids singing in the morning. And although that is all true, I have been surprised at how quickly I have gotten swept back up into life here with e-mails, meetings, bills, deadlines and so on. Things that seemed so insignificant while there have somehow become overwhelming again. I am a foreigner in my own body and mind, a person who has been somewhere, seen something and wanted this, but is now being drawn to, sucked in and propelled toward that. A life that was being marked by compassion, empathy and prayer has already started being marked by tasks, efficiencies and accomplishments. I feel crazy inside; which of these perspectives is real? What am I supposed to do with this experience and the realities it exposed me to? I, like so many of us, am experiencing disillusionment on a very personal and grand scale.

I am disillusioned by me (my faith, my walk, my impact) and by the world I live in, the people I love and serve. Both of these experiences, the one serving in Africa and the one living here in America, and all the ones in between are aspects of the life that God has allowed me to live, here for now. I do not decide which is more real than the others. They are all real. I am called to bring them together in myself and quilt them into my life as a soldier of love, servant to all and son of God. That was the gist of the talk I gave as a morning devotion the second day we were there. I was asked the night before to do this, which was probably good since it made me more in need of the Spirit; it was not something I was able to craft and try to make great. Wait a minute … maybe that is the key! My life is not something I am crafting to make great; it is something I am asked to live in pursuit of Christ, by the power of the Spirit, open to whatever and wherever He takes me, confident that “He who began a good work in [me] will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6). He does not need Africa to do this any more than He is limited by processing expense reports; He can and does use them all. Beloved, do not be disillusioned by all the sin and failure, but be full of hope and prayer in the promises of God to make all things right. Do not let others tell you that their own, your or anyone else’s failures are keeping them from God; He is using them all to reveal Himself to everyone! Scripture is full of stories (Joseph, the prodigal son, Christ) that could result in disillusionment, but instead show how evil and selfishness can be used to display greater acts of love than if they had not been allowed to happen. He is real; He is reality!

Do not let others tell you that their own, your or anyone else’s failures are keeping them from God; He is using them all to reveal Himself to everyone!

news@westoaks Freeze Warning Ministry Doesn’t Let Others Feel Out in the Cold TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister

A

s the summer comes to an end, vacations are over and kids get back to school, many of us begin looking forward to the cooler weather. But there is a part of our West Oaks community that dreads the change in temperature. My hope this year is that those who are homeless and lacking a warm place to stay will find a place right here in our own community. I have been meeting with other folks with the “Church of West Orange,” and we have come up with a ministry called “Freeze Warning.” Whenever there is a local freeze warning, we are hoping to provide a warm place for the homeless to stay, care through the night and a few hot meals. This is where all of you come in! There are five different opportunities in which to be involved, including: preparing and serving a hot dinner, preparing and serving a hot breakfast, staying with the homeless in a church (talking with them and listening to their stories), cleaning up after they leave the church in the morning, and washing linens, blankets and sleeping bags to get them ready for the next “freeze warning.” The plan over the next few months is to get each of the churches involved to get people to sign up for one of the opportunities to serve when there is a freeze warning, and

the final lists will be gathered and coordinated and a leader for each group will be identified. My hope in this ministry is that all of you looking for a place to serve “the least of these” will find a place and plug in. You can sign up beginning today in the foyer after the worship service. Other ways to be involved — and this is where we really can see 100 percent involvement — are bringing in standard pillows, standard pillow cases, plastic zippered covers for standard pillows, blankets, sleeping bags and large plastic storage containers. In order to be prepared for the first “Freeze Warning,” we will collect these items on Sunday, October 4, before and after our worship service. This will give all of us time to search and find great deals for these items at yard sales, clearance sales and so on, so we can provide a warm night at a crucial time of the year for the homeless. As we have prayed about this and come up with a purpose for this ministry, the verse that stands out is Matthew 25:3536: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (NIV, emphasis added). Let’s join together in prayer and ask God for His will to be done and to use us as He has gifted us. I really believe our community will be different because of our working together for His purposes. If you have any questions about this ministry, or how you can be involved, please grab me after the service or call me (352-090-7378). Thank you for your partnership in serving our Lord and Savior – it is truly a blessing!

NEXT WEEKEND! CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES TRAINING AND LUNCH Sunday, August 30, 10:30 a.m., Fellowship Hall, West Oaks site. Northland Emergency Response Teams Getting Prepared

Local Service Projects

Medical Reserve Corp: Medical professionals needed for leadership roles. We will build two teams of 35 each using nurses and medical professionals, plus other support personnel who need no experience.

n September 19-21 during all worship services, the plans for the training and future deployment of Northland Emergency Response Teams will be revealed. Northland is excited to have established a partnership agreement with Active Community Team Services – World Relief (ACTS-WR), which will provide the volunteer training, deployment requests, mobile feeding and mobile medical units for our use during deployed disasters. This equipment also will be available to our teams to conduct regular handson training and drills in the local community. During this preview event, everyone interested in serving on one of the Emergency Response Teams will have an opportunity to have questions answered about participation plus register for the simulation and training that will take place the following Saturday, September 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. At the Longwood location, the congregation will have the opportunity to climb aboard the 18-wheel mobile feeding kitchen. You will see the professional kitchen fully equipped, which has the ability to feed as many as 30,000 people a day during a disaster. We will be looking for chefs and others interested in food service to register for this team. Also on display will be the shell of the mobile medical unit that will be used to provide basic medical services in times of disaster. We will be looking for medical professionals, doctors, physician assistants and nurses to assist in this exciting new ministry. Many non-professional roles will be needed as well. There will be numerous areas where professionals and non-professionals alike can participate on the Emergency Response Teams. We want to build the following teams and will look to recruit a chief and two deputy chiefs for each team:

Emotional/Spiritual Care: Mental health and spiritual professionals for leadership roles needed plus interested community volunteers. We will build seven teams of seven people each. Transitional Pet Shelters: Veterinarian and animal professionals needed for leadership roles. Support volunteers will be trained. We will build three teams of seven people each.

There will be numerous areas where professionals and non-professionals alike can participate on the Emergency Response Teams.

Kitchen/Food Service Team: Food service professionals for leadership roles needed. We build three teams of 35 each; no experience necessary.

The Story of the Lost Son Luke 15:11-32 Jesus told a story about a father who loved his children very much. He planned to give all his riches to his two sons one day. One son didn’t want to wait, so he asked for his share of riches right away. He left home and spent all the money foolishly. He had to get a job feeding pigs. The son decided to go home and ask for a job from his father. While he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with tender love, the father ran to hug and kiss his son. The son said, “Father, I’ve sinned against heaven and against you. I’m no longer fit to be called your son.” But the father gave his son a ring, sandals and the best robe. He had a big dinner to celebrate. He said, “This son of mine was lost. Now he is found. Let’s celebrate!”

NOW to Help Develop Foundational Knowledge of Life in Christ But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. – 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV)

H

ave you ever noticed how often the most important things in life are the easiest to put off? Making new friends, growing in wisdom and knowledge of God ... it doesn’t have to be hard to pursue some of the great things in life. In fact, it can be easy and you can start NOW — Northland on Wednesdays ... From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose to bring believers to maturity in Christ — working to provide resources that prepare believers for their spiritual journey. This year, that purpose is manifested in NOW. It’s a curriculum for everyone wanting to develop a foundational knowledge of life in Christ — developed to help you put into practice the daily habits that lead to transformation. The elders have approved a three-year curriculum of 27 courses in three subject areas (nine Bible, nine Theology, and nine Christian Living). Each year there will be three NOW four-week sessions — the first of which begins September 9 at 7 p.m. Slated to eventually be archived on Northland’s web site, these courses will initially be offered at Northland at Longwood and streaming online (now.northlandchurch.net). Each session will consist of three electives: one course in each of the subject areas. Each course includes a daily homework assignment of Bible reading and prayer. Some teach new tools for understanding and applying Scripture and all aim to draw us closer to God and in fellowship with one another. Each four-week session will kick off with an evening of extended worship, punctuated by an introduction of each of the electives. NOW is a family learning environment. Children will have their own track: NOW/Wow! Child care will be available for children ages 5 and under and grade school children will be engaged learning how to study the Bible in fun new ways. Middle school students have the opportunity to go to their own Bible study class, and high school students can attend Doulos, Northland’s student leader training.

Challenges to Christianity

Christian Living: FOLLOWING JESUS IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD Michael Van Huis, Northland’s executive director of Service, will facilitate this class. Ask “How can I be Jesus in a global world?” Learn perspective and cultural engagement for the church today. Guest speakers will include Pioneers’ Donnie Scearce and Ted Esler. This course will meet in rooms 4213-15 and will also be available through online classrooms.

Bible: BASIC BIBLE Sean Cooper, a minister of Service and Equipping, will teach a Bible Basics course that will explore the basic foundations of biblical thought. How did we get the Bible we read? What is the difference between inerrancy and authority of Scripture? How did church leaders decide which books to include in the canon? This course will meet in rooms 4206-7 and will also be available through online classrooms.

Redefining Purity

I

Sundays, 11 a.m., rooms 4206-7

Facilitators: Governing elders Peter Katauskas, Ed Wood and Paul Rahill Peter Katauskas

Matthew 10:34-39; I John 4:7-12 r. Hunter’s sermon series “Challenges to Christianity” has sparked a lot of Ed Wood dialogue for Northlanders. In response, we have the unique opportunity to hear from our governing elders on those topics. This is an opportunity for you to delve deeper into the struggles of faith, and to address questions on these issues in a more personal setting. No Paul Rahill registration is necessary. Just show up. Details: Jamila Millette (jamila.millette@northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1832)

D

Theology: THE DOCTRINE OF MAN Dr. Joel C. Hunter will teach a theology course dealing with the Doctrine of Man. “Who am I in God’s design?” Find your purpose as you learn why God created man and what sets you apart as a believer in Christ. This class will meet in the sanctuary and will be available via Web stream and iPhone. Pastor Dan Lacich will serve as the online pastor to address questions and comments from online participants.

PurityWorks Class

Discussion group now meeting! This week’s challenge: “Believing in Christ would hurt my relationship with those I love.”

This session, adults can choose from the following three course options:

t’s time to end the confusion about purity. First of all, it’s not about a condition of the body or an age; it’s a condition of the heart. We can’t help but be concerned about sexual purity. The danger of temptation in our sexualized culture is like a looming thunderhead over our children and us. And our society is growing more and more flippant about morality. Yet, sexual abstinence programs, by themselves, have been less than effective. In fact, more than 85 percent of the young people who make these commitments forget about them within 18 months. Barna’s research makes it clear that as many people inside the church struggle with sexual sin as outside – married and unmarried, young and old. What are we doing wrong? Through a simple understanding of the five senses as doors of the heart, we can evaluate (and teach our kids to evaluate) what we see and hear, how we value life, what we say and what we touch. These choices are what affect the purity of the heart. This is the foundation that connects and leads to the embrace of personal integrity, noble lives and sexual purity. Planned Purity, a class for parents, will be held on Mondays at 10 a.m. in the Rink. The first, introductory class will take place September 21, and six regular classes will follow. Materials from PurityWorks, The Princess and the Kiss, The Squire and the Scroll and their accompanying Life Lesson books, will be made available, as will many other great resources.

elow are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that reflect the focus of this weekend’s worship service.

Prodigals and Those Who Love Them: Words of Encouragement for Those Who Wait, by Ruth Bell Graham Ruth Bell Graham showcases five prodigals who returned to the Father, offering comfort and encouragement to those still anxiously waiting. Scripture, poems, hymns, prayers and Ruth’s personal witness to two of her own prodigal children make this an enduring classic. God Gives Second Chances, by R.T. Kendall Kendall looks at wrongdoing and the judgment of ministry leaders and laypeople, assuring those who’ve fallen that they can be used again—and warning those who condemn them. Exploring his own vulnerabilities, he presents a compassionate, biblically balanced case for a God of second chances. I Can’t See God Because I’m in the Way, by Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz When Christians look for a reason why they’re stuck in their faith, they often miss the obvious obstacle— their own belief behaviors. Bickel and Jantz lead readers to uncover how, when and where they get in their own way of experiencing a transforming, heart-igniting faith. The Return of the Prodigal Son, by Henri J.M. Nouwen When Henri Nouwen stumbled across a poster of Rembrandt’s “The Return of the Prodigal Son,” he began a spiritual journey that would help him understand the biblical parable as well as the story of his own life. Take this opportunity to join Henri as he leads the wayward prodigal and judgmental sibling who resides within each of us towards the openhanded, overwhelming compassion and eternal love of the Father. The Return of the Prodigal Son will transform your reading of the parable and the way you understand your life story.

Preaching the message this weekend: Vernon Rainwater, Pastor

“Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms. We have a reason for being together. It is to worship God for who He is and what He has done.” — Pastor Vernon Pastor Vernon Rainwater leads Northland in worship when we gather together for church “in these rooms.” A native of Wilmore, Kentucky, Vernon has been a part of the worship leadership at Northland for 20 years. While distributed ministry and worship are the two primary areas of his focus, his desire is to motivate each generation to live a life of worship everywhere, every day. Vernon has been a musician since he was 17, but he has worked in social work, law enforcement and served in the military as well. With a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky, he also holds graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky in social work and from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in biblical studies. Vernon and his wife, Connie, have two daughters: Claire and Mandy. Mandy and her husband, Chad Turnbull, live in Casselberry, Florida, and have blessed the Rainwaters with three grandchildren. Claire and her husband, Aaron Reed, live in New York City, where Claire attends Columbia University. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT PASTOR VERNON, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Challenges to Christianity: I Have My Reasons “I don’t believe in Christ because of my upbringing.” Scripture focus:

Luke 15:11-24 (ESV)

Worship focus:

..................................................................................................................................................

......................................................................

And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.”

Worship Christ today as our Inheritance. Because of His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope and to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading (1 Peter 1:3-4).

Notes:

Summary prayer: ......................................................................

Lord, I lay my heart before You And I pour out my very soul. Desperate, You know what I need As empty before You I go. Lord, strengthen my weary heart— Make it strong once again. For only You can meet this need, Hold me tight, my Savior Friend. I know no other way to go I’m spent beyond my measure. Fill me Lord, my Life, my Song Spin my life with peace, Your Treasure. — Author Unknown
