ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

xcitement continues to build for NOW — Northland on Wednesdays — which begins September 9 at 7 p.m. in Longwood and online at now.northlandchurch.net. This is the first time in more than a decade that the church has had a regular midweek gathering!
Many people are asking, “What will NOW be like?” and “How will it be different from church on the weekends?” and most importantly “How will my life be changed as a result?” First of all, unlike weekend services, adults will experience NOW together in a classroom setting where we can interact with teachers and one another. Courses will be dynamic, and the teachers, engaging as they dig deep into three categories: BIBLE, THEOLOGY and CHRISTIAN LIVING. But that’s just the beginning … NOW! has also been designed as a family learning environment that offers something for everyone in your tribe. As you are engaged in your classrooms, your children (6 and up) will be busy studying the Bible in fun new ways in their own course track called NOW/Wow! Middle school students will have their own Bible study class, and high school students get to attend Doulos, Northland’s student leader training. Of course, child care will be available for children age 5 and under, as well. NOW is definitely a family affair! “What most excites me about NOW is that it will provide a long-term curriculum resource for everyone wanting to develop a foundational knowledge of life in Christ, and to put into practice the daily habits that lead to a
transformed life of service,” says Pastor Joel C. Hunter. “The icing on the cake is that the whole family can come together as a church family midweek for the encouragement found in fellowship.” Dr. Hunter will be actively involved in NOW, teaching a THEOLOGY course called “The Doctrine of Man,” designed to help you find your purpose as you learn why God created man and what sets you apart as a believer in Christ. Dr. Dan Lacich, one of Northland’s pastors and executive director of sites development, will serve as the online minister for the class, helping to answer questions from online participants. Michael Van Huis, Northland’s executive director of service, will lead a CHRISTIAN LIVING course on “Following Jesus in a Globalized World.” Michael explains, “In the world we live in today, the opportunity for engagement with people who are different from us has never been easier or more urgent. The goal for each person who attends the class would be together to have our perspectives on the world broadened so that we can each find the unique way that God is calling us to engage with the world.” Joining Michael throughout the course will be Donnie Scearce, a gifted motivator and speaker whose personal passion for God and missions has challenged thousands to serve; and Ted Esler, who has lived the life of serving others with his wife and five children in war-torn Bosnia. Sean Cooper, Northland’s minister of service and equipping who recently spoke to us during worship on “Becoming a Serving Society,” will lead a class on “Basic Bible.” Sean explains, “Each session will look at the dynamic nature of God's revelation through the Scriptures and provide practical application for your life today. You will learn both factual and historical information while also discovering the power of the Word, incarnate through Christ, and made alive in believers through the power of the Holy Spirit.” “Bring your Bibles and come ready to interact on the greatest writing the world has ever seen!” he adds. Learn more on page 10 or at now.northlandchurch.net. No registration is necessary. Just come prepared to connect with others and grow in the faith … NOW!

BE vs. DO JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
A
s we were being handed out our primary jobs in Africa, I was stunned to see that I was on the home visit team. This team would go out with the Community Health Evangelists (CHE) who were ministering to the families of the kids at the school. I saw that and thought, Wait a minute, I am a good-sized guy – aren’t they building stuff this week? Isn’t there construction work to do? I thought for a moment and then remembered many conversations I have had with Pastor Dan over the last two years about ministry. He has shared with me that the do part of ministry, the make-stuff-happen, task-oriented, check-the-box stuff of ministry was not what ministry was all about. It was somewhat easier for me; that is my gift set, but it was not what ultimately mattered. It was the be part of ministry that was the point. The do stuff really only had value as it pertained to its impact on the opportunity to be. Well, now it made sense; this was a be, not a do. It was ministry at its core. Go out with people you don’t know, who speak a language you don’t understand, and just be present with them as they minister.
That is as clear as mud. Where is the box to check? There wasn’t one. I leaned over to Pastor Dan and said, “Did you do that? Did you put me there so I could work on the be of ministry and not the do?” He just laughed and said, “Nope, didn’t have anything to do with it. That was all God!” Come to find out, he really didn’t have anything to do with it. God wanted me in a place of complete dependence upon Him, of absolute certainty of only one thing: that I didn’t have a clue what to do or how to do it. See, one of my lifelong lessons in the faith has been God’s relentless pursuit of me and His desire for me to simply desire Him, not what I can do for Him (as if there was such a thing) or what I think He wants me to do for others (ditto), just my desire to be His. I started to become overwhelmed with what I was seeing every day, the apparent hopelessness and despair closing in all around me, the reality that I was not changing anything for anyone, and I prayed, “Lord, I want to know what You want me to do. Father, I want to know what You want me to say.” I heard softly in – Psalm 37:7 (NIV) my ear, “I want you to just know Me, not the answers to any of those questions!” Ahhhhh, be! Psalm 46:10 says it like this: “Be still, and know that I am God”; Exodus 14:14 says, “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still”; and Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret” (NIV). Do you know and believe that He wants you to be His, and in so doing, He will do all He wants in, to and through you? Just like the thief on the cross in the main Scripture text today, we are to only believe in Him, and we will be with Him! It is like my favorite Oswald Chambers quote on prayer: “Prayer is not preparation for the greater work; it is the greater work.” Being is the greater work and, when correct, results in powerful doing! Be a part of this with us here at Northland at Oviedo!
“ Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret.”

‘I’m So Mad I Came!’ By Laurie Copeland
W
e had reached the final moments of an incredible 11-day Distributed Journey to Ukraine. As we choked out our goodbyes, hugged our orphans and piled into the van, a team member humorously tossed out, “I’m so mad I came!” We laughed through our tears. Each one of us understood exactly what he meant. His life — all our lives — had been changed. We had fallen in love with these precious little ones. We ached for their sorrows. We couldn’t predict their futures or know if we would ever see them again. During those 11 days, we passed most of our time loving, sharing the love of Christ and being loved in return. Hugs, prayers, conversations, devotionals, crafts, bubble blowing, sidewalk chalk, Bible lessons, photos, skits, praise songs, UNO, fingernail painting, ball games, hand communication and little gifts (both given and received) filled our days. As the hours sped by, we did so much smiling we thought our faces would never recover. And it never felt so good. In 11 short days, our lives were knocked silly out of our repetition, our complacency, our utter selfishness. And it never felt so good. God created us so complex that I’m too simpleminded to understand this phenomenon. Why do we lull ourselves into what’s comfortable, only to know deep down what we need: to be loved senseless. To be knocked over the head with Christ’s better plan. To go. To be made uncomfortable. To love unconditionally. To risk. And it feels so good!
This was my eighth Distributed Journey. To be honest, every year there’s a part of me that dreads going because I have to get out of my comfort zone. (And I even lead the trip!) And every year, an unexplainable awareness tells me I need to go. So I do. And I’m so glad I go! But then, after we get back and we witness this phenomenon, we are left with a question or two: How do we process our experience? What do we do with what we’ve learned? We can’t return unchanged. Should we strengthen our love? Deepen our appreciation for God’s gifts? Take our relationship with God more seriously? Write letters that extend the message of Christ’s love? Pray for the new relationships and the Christians who will continue the work? Act on what we’ve experienced? Allow Him to continue to shape us? All of this and more. None of it will be easy. Am I mad I went? Never been happier.

Serve Team Assists Christ’s Hope in Germany
T
Twelve Serve Team members traveled to Germany last month and had an amazing time renovating a missionary training center for Northland partner Christ’s Hope International. The Serve Team installed bathrooms, tile, bedrooms, more than 80 pieces of Sheetrock and so much more. Christ’s Hope desires to mobilize teams that will educate children as well as adults on the widespread AIDS epidemic. This center in Germany is a training area where those who are called into service for Him will go and be trained in all areas of their field positions. Get ready for more Serve Team opportunities next year to take a small trip and extend our local serving teams!
Laurie shared the love of Christ with orphans in Ukraine on her Distributed Journey. Do you think she’s glad she went?
Would you extend the Ukraine Distributed Journey by praying for some of the orphans? Learn about these precious orphans below. Galina: Every time we saw each other, she and I shared a big hug before she glued herself to my side. This little girl believes in God and eagerly accepted the Bible I gave her. “I love you, and God loves you” were the last words I handsignaled her way. Tears filled her beautiful amber eyes as she nodded vigorously, clutching her Bible to her chest. Pray that her future will include a relationship with Christ. Kolya: I believe this handsome 14-year-old boy is struggling in his search for God. Most of his friends snuck behind the buildings for a smoke. Kolya was different. I gave him a Bible, which he began reading that night. But he still doesn’t know if he believes. One evening, he stood looking back and forth between Nina (a Christian team member who spoke Ukrainian) and his friends as she told him, “You don’t need to go with them.” He said, “You don’t understand,” turned and left. Kolya knew his friends would be with him longer than these Christians from another culture. Pray that Kolya finds the love that lasts for eternity. Stanislov: He was not a camper but visited every night from the village. He wanted to come and talk to an American, although he didn’t know what to say. I took the opportunity to ask him some questions. When the conversation turned to God, I asked if he wanted a Bible. He did. When I went to find one, a Christian Ukrainian cautioned me that teenagers like to rip out the pages for cigarette papers. When I warned Stanislov, “No ripping pages for rolling cigarettes,” he told me, “No, no; I am very interested in reading this.” Pray that Stanislov will read and know Truth. Katia: The first night, I felt a playful dig at my side, and there she was. Tickling was Katia’s means of overcoming our language barrier. After that, she and I had many great tickle wars together. Pray that others will share the love of Christ with Katia. Sasha: He is a town boy around 10 years of age who taught himself English by reading books. Sasha can carry on a conversation quite well and is now teaching his father English. When I brought out a U.S. map as a gift, he acted as though he had received a precious treasure. Pray that Sasha will add the knowledge of God to his learning.
Peter: His perpetual smile made this orphan boy stand out. He also loved playing foursquare and UNO with us and was very gentle with the kittens we found in the woods. Pray that Peter will discover the joy and tenderness found in Christ. Vova: This little one is an 8-year-old bundle of love. He loves to hug, smile and hug some more. He and team member Jessi forged a great bond as he hopped up to beg for piggyback rides. Pray that Vova will know a love beyond understanding.
And yet some more… Yarik prayed the prayer, “Lord, change me” when offered salvation. He needs support and follow-up. I met sweet, cute and lovable Roxanna the first day. When she saw me give a Bible to Galina, she took one, too. I sensed she was more interested in a gift than in the Scriptures, but He does not allow His Word to return void. Tiny Ulia and Vika loved to hug, play UNO, play hopscotch and draw on the sidewalk. Vika seemed very interested in the tract I gave her. I was impressed with kind Masha, who gave me her little pink jacket to sit on one day after a rainfall. Shurya gave me a beautiful bunch of wildflowers one day. Jenya was loved by the entire American team. Fourteen-year-old Anita has a boyfriend. She seemed aloof and uninterested in our Bible lessons. After we left, the Ukrainian team had a small breakthrough with her before their departure. Anita’s friend Anya seemed a bit more interested and friendly. When she came, she listened. Nastia always talked loudly as she entered our Bible studies. She plopped onto the floor and became a nearly constant distraction. Jane, a Christian from the Ukrainian team, began gently rubbing her shoulders to calm her down. Winking, Jane looked over at me. She knew exactly what she was doing. When Nastia was calm, she would listen! Natasha, Masha, Masha, Ulia, Ulia and Alina are six very sweet girls. They would smile and listen intently. Ira hung around three friends. Ira is strikingly beautiful with pale, piercing blue eyes. She was one of the older girls to attend our Bible studies and seemed very interested in the daily topics. Vlad was our Mr. Personality. He could be rambunctious, but seemed interested in the Gospel. Pray that each of these orphans will know the Father’s everlasting love through His Son.

Answer: PARADISE
The Thief on the Cross Luke 23:32-43 When the soldiers put Jesus on the cross, there was a thief on the cross to His left and another on the cross to His right. As they hung on the crosses, one of the thieves made fun of Jesus. He said, “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself! Save us!” But the other thief scolded him. “Don’t you have any respect for God? Remember, you are under the same sentence of death. We are being punished fairly. We are getting just what our actions call for. But this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “What I’m about to tell you is true. Today you will be with Me in paradise.” Jesus saved that thief because he believed!

The Marriage Course
Next class begins: September 17
M
arriages are under a lot of pressure these days. It seems that often during difficult times, the biggest impact is felt in our relationships. Northland is offering a unique opportunity for couples to improve their marriage by spending time in focused conversation together around guided topics. The Marriage Course is being offered for the second time this year. Recently, 40 couples completed the course. Below they share how it impacted their marriage: “You will never know what a help it was to have that marriage time on Thursdays. My husband and I have only been married since February, and we have had a lot of struggles, and now things are finally getting back on track. Thank you so much for spending time with us and the other couples. The class was not always easy, but we were always able to come to a quicker resolution than before.” “I think this class gave us the opportunity to communicate about things we don’t always think to talk about. It has opened the lines of communication …” “This class gave us a foundation of effective communication and understanding of each other’s needs.”
“My wife is the most important person in my life besides God, and [I learned] that I should treat her likewise.” “This class taught me to deal with my past hurts and those of my partner. We must solve them to have a good marriage.” This is a seven-week class that begins each week with the couples gathering in a candlelit room, artfully decorated with the theme of the week. The group shares a meal that each couple has provided for themselves. This can be peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, takeout from your favorite restaurant, leftovers from home or something from Nature’s Table Café. Together the group views a video teaching, after which couples disperse to work through the evening’s material privately. There is no group discussion, only discussion between husband and wife. The course gives married couples tools to build a strong and healthy marriage that lasts a lifetime. If you missed the first session, or if you are just now hearing about the wonderful impact this course has had on the couples who participated during the summer, now is your chance! Don’t wait to register, as class size is limited. The class is being held Thursdays, September 17 through October 29, 6:15 to 9 p.m. in the Student Ministries and Care Center, The Rink. The cost: $10 registration per couple and $10 for two workbooks. Child care is available with registration. Details and registration: Barb Olsen (407-9497183 or barbara.olsen@northlandchurch.net)
“The chapters on communication and resolving conflict were very beneficial.”
“I found a tool and a method to improve my marriage, which are easy to understand and put into practice.”

Christian Living: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

Bible: BIBLE BASICS
Led by Sean Cooper in rooms 4206-7 in Longwood. Explore the basic foundations of biblical thought. How did we get the Bible we read? What is the difference between inerrancy and authority of Scripture? How did church leaders decide which books to include in the canon? Visit now.northlandchurch.net to learn more.
Pastor Gus Davies
“This is the first time I’ve ever written my story. I realized I was still carrying some baggage that I needed to give to Christ. Thank you!” “Hearing those around me share their stories publicly, hearing about the different styles of serving.” “Seeing other believers wanting to grow in their faith.” “Learning I have a story, but not in the traditional sense. Christ was always in the car of my life, but I had Him locked in the trunk for several years. It’s a story I can now tell with practice.”
“We should know that it is not what we say that matters; it is that we continue to say what God led us to say, regardless of the outcome. It is not by our words that others are saved. God will save them even when we say the wrong things if they believe by faith in grace through the power of Jesus. I love you all, and I love Northland!”
“This class helped us to set a marriage time on a weekly basis to share our thoughts and feelings with each other.”
The first session of Northland on Wednesdays is September 9, when we will have a time of extended worship before these classes begin the following week and last until September 30:

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Challenges to Christianity: I Have My Reasons “I tried God, and it didn’t work.” Scripture focus:
Luke 23:39-43 (NASB)
Worship focus:
..................................................................................................................................................
......................................................................
One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
Worship God today for His life-giving power. When we acknowledge and serve Him, it is His power that sustains us, through His Word — not our own strength.
Notes:
Summary prayer: ......................................................................
My ego is like a fortress. I have built its walls stone by stone To hold out the invasion of the love of God. But I have stayed here long enough. There is light Over the barriers. O my God — The darkness of my house forgive And overtake my soul. I relax the barriers. I abandon all that I think I am, All that I hope to be, All that I believe I possess. I let go of the past, I withdraw my grasping hand from the future, And in the great silence of this moment, I alertly rest my soul. — Howard Thurman
