NORTHLAND, A CHURCH DISTRIBUTED
| www.northlandchurch.net
“…no person is beyond redemption, no human stain beyond cleansing. We live in a world that judges people by their behavior and requires criminals, debtors and moral failures to live with the consequences…even the church finds it difficult to forgive those who fall short. “Grace is irrational, unfair, unjust and only makes sense if I believe in another world governed by a merciful God who always offers another chance…
When the world sees grace in action, it falls silent.” – Philip Yancey, Rumors of Another World

ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

re we there yet? It’s a question that all of us have asked or been asked at some point in our lives – usually on a long road trip. It’s good to know that you’re making progress when you’re traveling. Similarly, as a believer, it’s good to know that you’re making progress toward spiritual maturity. It can be hard to tell sometimes, especially when you’re doing all of the “right things” when it comes to your relationship with God. You go to church every weekend, pay your tithe, say your prayers. Still, you’re not entirely sure where you’re going, and you’re starting to disengage from the process. You wonder if you’ll ever reach your destination. (“Are we there yet?”) It’s time to tap the brakes and take your life off cruise control! Your relationship with God can be so much more, and your journey through life can be a beautiful one, filled with opportunity, excitement, and purpose around every turn. Whether you’re on spiritual cruise control and need to be roused from the routine you’ve established, or you’re in a ditch and need to get back on the road, or you just need encouragement as you travel the “High Way,” Inner State 80, by Dr. Joel C. Hunter, was written for you. The book was developed from a 10-year preaching series designed to help people along on the journey toward spiritual maturity. It captures both the rich teaching and the winsome storytelling that characterize Dr. Hunter’s preaching. The chapters in this book are called “Exits.”
There are 10 Exits in all, divided into 80 short readings, or “Miles,” which combine strong biblical teaching with inspiring, educational and even lighthearted stories. Each Mile can be completed in about 10 minutes, so the book can be a great road map for your daily devotions. But how you proceed on the journey is really up to you: You can do one Mile every day over the next few months, or one in the morning and one at night over 40 days. Or you might want to read in long stretches, from one Exit to the next. The choice is yours. As you travel through these Miles, you’ll discover some of what we tend to miss when we speed down the congested road of Christian routines. Will you have chosen a relationship with God that gave you a profound degree of spiritual depth, or will there be milemarkers you missed because you were unengaged, letting spiritual cruise control set the pace of the most important aspect of your life’s journey? The journey to Christian maturity and real spiritual depth leads away from error and regret. When you follow the High Way, your “Inner State” will take you toward a fully confident faith, bringing you to a place where you can bless and encourage others. Inner State 80: Your Journey on the High Way is available in the bookstore and at www.innerstate80.com. The price is $14.99. But for those who wish to purchase the book during its inaugural weekend, September 5 to 7, it is being offered for just $10. All proceeds benefit Northland’s facilities.

very special family lives among Northlanders in Lake County. The 20-member family of The Carpenter’s House for Children consists of Pat and Linda Manfredi, Linda’s parents, and 16 former orphans, who today are their sons and daughters. Pat and Linda for three decades have been following the Lord’s call to take in orphans. To date, they have raised more than 140 children who have gone on to adulthood (and some have gone home to be with the Lord). In the same way that the Manfredis have taken these children to become their own, God has taken us in to become His children. Ephesians 1:5 reveals that “he predestined us to be adopted as his sons
through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will” (NIV). Through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, you and I were taken into God’s house to become His family. And it is His pleasure to do so! What is better in life than to be chosen for love by the Living God? So we who have been adopted by God into His family are called to serve these 16 orphans, their parents and grandparents. In August, a group of Northlanders from the Mount Dora and Longwood sites convened at the Manfredi home to spruce it up with fresh paint. They were joined by a contingent from a local building company, and in just a few hours, they gave the house a bright new interior. They also enjoyed lunch and time connecting with one another. There are many ways you can serve the Manfredi family, from household projects to finances to game time with the kids. If God is tugging at your heart, contact Ann South, a Northlander and volunteer with The Carpenter’s House, (south4@comcast.net or 352-267-3388). Come, serve and be encouraged by the Carpenters among us. >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Tension
we were facing and the minimal impact and effort we were having on any of it. I ended up with two verses, in tension in my heart and mind. Both Scriptures are true, and both are abused by many of us in the church to justify our behaviors JEREMY JOBSON either way. Northland at Oviedo The first verse is Acts 3:4, 6. A crippled beggar asks Peter Site Minister and John for money, and Peter replies, “Look at us!” then says, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. Here we see the response so many of us give with confidence to those who are in need, “They need Jesus, not a handout, food or clothing.” That is accurate; we all need Christ in have been writing a series of articles in our lives. Local Partner Spotlight: Debbie’s Doorstep A Northland-supported Ministry A letter to the congregation from Debbie’s Doorstep founders Brad and Kelly Verkaik
H
ello, Northland! What an honor and pleasure it is to have an opportunity to share our hearts with fellow Northlanders. We’ve been members of Northland for almost 10 years, and we found it more and more difficult to stick with our routine Christian lives. Initially, we had a pretty good thing going. Do the church thing on Sunday, rock out with the worship team, hope to hear Pastor Joel tell us how to make our lives better, and sneak out the back to beat the Northland traffic jam. Well, it wasn’t long before we realized that Joel usually wasn’t talking about how to make our lives better. Instead, he always seemed to be talking about how we can make the lives of others better. Jesus had similar tendencies. Guess what most of Jesus’ sermons covered? Serving His people, particularly those who are poor, alone, hungry, homeless, abused, or physically or emotionally challenged. Along with letting us know that He was the Son of God, Jesus almost always spoke about our responsibility to tend His sheep. Obviously, the Holy Spirit was talking to us through Pastor Joel, but the Spirit also began moving in our hearts and minds directly. As a real estate investor, I began feeling led to help hardworking, low-income people to purchase their own homes, as opposed to renting for the rest of their lives. At the same time, Kelly was being called in what seemed like an unrelated direction. Kelly’s mom, Debbie, died five years ago of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). From the day she was diagnosed, we wondered why God would allow this to happen. Debbie was a kind, caring servant of Christ. When she died, we hoped God would show us a reason or at least an example of how Debbie’s death furthered His Kingdom. So we waited. And waited. And as it turns out, God was doing the same thing. He was waiting on us to honor Him and to honor Debbie’s life by serving those in need. In Kelly’s back-and-forth with God over the passing of her mother, the Holy Spirit clearly spoke to her and encouraged her to turn the home that Debbie had left behind into a safe place for abused or disadvantaged women and children. When I told Kelly that the Holy Spirit had been encouraging me to help people buy their own homes, God’s plan came together. It’s called Debbie’s Doorstep. Debbie’s Doorstep is designed to empower abused or underprivileged women who have little or no support system in their lives. We will help
span the gap between short-term shelters and independent living. We believe that by meeting the long-term physical, emotional and spiritual needs of abused or disadvantaged women, we can help start a healing process in their lives. This will be accomplished by providing approximately one year of free housing for each resident. During that year, each woman will save a significant portion of her income into her own housing fund to be used as a down payment on a home in her name. After the year is up, Debbie’s Doorstep will help maximize each housing fund by assisting the resident throughout the home-buying process. We will use existing government and private programs to assist the candidates with financing and home renovation if needed. In addition to providing a gateway to home ownership, our goal is to also use the year of tenancy to empower the candidates through education and counseling. With the help of a live-in transitional manager, we will help provide guidance in areas such as spiritual growth, job training, parenting, financial management and abuse recovery. Residents will not be required to be Christians to participate; however, they will be encouraged to become involved in church and the community, to study the Bible and to seek a relationship with Jesus. Instead of giving our residents a short-term solution, God asked us to change their lives on a much bigger scale, to give them a second chance, as Jesus does with us on a daily basis, to break generational habits passed down by their parents and to let them know they are valued and loved members of God’s family and society as a whole. We will seek to build relationships that will allow us to have an effect and influence for years to come, and to let them know that Jesus died to save them and that it is His love that flows through us.
How You Can Help This Ministry
In July, the IRS approved our 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status, and we are almost finished preparing the house for our first residents. Below are some of our current needs: • We are in need of ongoing financial support (taxdeductible donations). One way is through our primary fundraiser of the year, The Fall Gala, to be held Saturday, October 24 at Lake Receptions in Mount Dora. • We have volunteer renovation and maintenance opportunities in and around the house. • In addition, we are seeking a single female transitional manager to live in the house with the women and children, who is willing and able to speak the truth with a loving heart, to lead other women in the ways of Christlike living, and to encourage perseverance when times are tough. This is an important part of Debbie’s Doorstep. • We are seeking an unceasing amount of prayer.

Serve Wholeheartedly Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically. – Romans 12:11 (NLT)
O
n the weekend of August 22, as I rolled out of a warm bed at 6 a.m., there was one thought in my mind: “serve enthusiastically.” For me, one of the greatest parts about Northland is Saturday morning serve days. On this particular serve day, more than 80 Northlanders joined in prayer at the Longwood site. While standing in parking lot 3, we discussed the many serving opportunities ahead of us that day: • Deliver backpacks to some of the families of Nathaniel’s Hope. • Help Destiny Foundation with sorting and stacking food. • Paint the children’s rooms at the Rescue Mission. • Help the Boys and Girls Clubs to decorate and paint before the new classes begin. During the movement of the morning, we prayed and distributed ourselves out to serve, and then joined together for a lunch as a group. If you have a heart to serve others and are looking for a team opportunity, join a Serve Team. All opportunities are listed on the website (www.northlandchurch.net/serve). If your initial response to hearing about this ministry is a desire to get involved, contact us. We have learned through launching this ministry that the Holy Spirit often can be found in our initial instinct to act when people are in need. We love you, Northland! Thank you for your prayers and support. This ministry was born from the encouragement and instruction of Northland’s leaders and is nurtured by the love and support of the congregation. You are all truly appreciated. Details: www.debbiesdoorstep.com or debbiesdoorstep@ mac.com

Who is important in God’s kingdom? Luke 7:24-28 In the book of Malachi, it says, “I will send My messenger ahead of You. He will prepare Your way for You.” John the Baptist was that messenger who prepared the people’s hearts for Jesus. He showed everyone that Jesus was the Savior the world had been waiting for. Jesus invites anyone who believes in Him to belong to the Kingdom of God. Because of everything John did for Jesus, it seems like John would be more important than others in God’s Kingdom. But Jesus explained to the crowd that everyone in the Kingdom is very important to Jesus. “I tell you, no one more important than John has ever been born. But the least important person in God’s Kingdom is more important than he is.”

Engage now. (Northland on Wednesdays) Join us this week for the start of the first session of Northland on Wednesdays! We will meet in the sanctuary (and online at now.northlandchurch.net) for a time of extended worship and class introductions.
This new midweek experience also offers a fun, exciting learning environment for the kids, called Now.Wow!
Theology THE DOCTRINE OF MAN
Led by Dr. Joel C. Hunter in the sanctuary at Longwood. Find your purpose as you learn why God created man and what sets you apart as a believer in Christ.
Christian Living GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
Led by Michael Van Huis (with guest speakers Donnie Scearce and Ted Esler from Pioneers) in rooms 4213-15 in Longwood. Ask, “How can I be Jesus in a global world?” Learn perspective and cultural engagement for the church today.
Bible BIBLE BASICS
Led by Sean Cooper in rooms 4206-7 in Longwood. Explore the basic foundations of biblical thought. How did we get the Bible we read? What is the difference between inerrancy and authority of Scripture? How did church leaders decide which books to include in the canon?
First- through third-graders will be in classes taking a deeper look at what they’ve been learning during weekend worship in Children’s Church. Because this age group learns best through repetition, they’ll be revisiting Bible stories but with new worship, interactive games and crafts that help really bring the stories to life. Fourth- and fifth-graders will be engaged in a hunt to discover God’s Truth. As a team, they’ll be putting on their detective hats, decoding secret messages, solving puzzles and playing games that lead them right to the Truth! (Individual workbooks for the children will be available at a suggested donation of $8.) Child care will be available for children ages five and under. All children (fifth grade and younger) must register at now.northlandchurch.net.
Visit now.northlandchurch.net to learn more.

RELEVANTREADS
B
elow are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that reflect the focus of this weekend’s worship service.
Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist, by John Piper Scripture reveals that the great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. Now revised and expanded, Desiring God reveals how delighting in God can motivate us to glorify Him through worship, stewardship, loving our neighbor, rejoicing in suffering and other “duties.” John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn’t truly exist: Delight is our duty. Discover how to lay a biblical foundation for a life of celebration by truly desiring the Lord. The Pursuit of God: The Human Thirst for the Divine, by A.W. Tozer In the muddle of day-today life, have you somehow forgotten that Christianity is a living, vibrant relationship with a personal God? In this classic bestseller and recipient of both the ECPA Gold and Platinum Book Awards, The Pursuit of God reminds and challenges you to renew your relationship with your loving God. In each of the 10 chapters, Tozer explains one aspect of hungering for God and ends with a prayer. The Dangerous Duty of Delight, by John Piper This condensed version of Piper’s popular Desiring God emphasizes the importance of strengthening your relationship with your Creator by enjoying Him and His creation. Piper’s now classic ideas are presented here in an accessible size that will allow you to absorb and apply them quickly — leading you to a dramatically different and joyful experience of your faith. Filled with biblical reasons for living a life of celebration, this life-changing read helps you discover not only why, but how to delight more fully in the Lord. When I Don’t Desire God: How to Fight for Joy, by John Piper Explaining how to become a “Christian hedonist,” a bestselling author offers guidance on how to find spiritual joy to readers who are unsure of where to seek it. God’s Pursuit of Man, by A.W. Tozer Although written two years after the publication of The Pursuit of God, Tozer’s God’s Pursuit of Man sets forth the biblical truth that before man can pursue God, God must first pursue man. A “prequel” of sorts, God’s Pursuit of Man speaks fervently of God’s desire for man to be saved and the action He takes as He “invades” the human soul. Tozer then explains how it is through the power and promise of the Holy Spirit that we can truly understand the mystery of the Triune God.

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Challenges to Christianity: I Have My Reasons “I wouldn’t be good at Christianity.” Scripture focus:
Luke 7:24-28 (NASB)
Worship focus:
..................................................................................................................................................
......................................................................
When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces! But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.’ I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
Worship God today for His sacrificial love. Because we were not worthy, He paid the price for our redemption. Because of His love, He guides us by His Word and His Spirit. Because of His love, He is transforming us into His image day by day.
Notes:
Summary prayer: ......................................................................
“The house of my soul is too small for You to come to it. May it be enlarged by You. It is in ruins: restore it. In Your eyes it has offensive features. I admit it, I know it; but who will clean it up? Or to whom shall I cry other than You? Cleanse me from my secret faults, Lord, and spare Your servant from sins to which I am tempted by others.” — St. Augustine, Confessions
NEXT WEEKEND: Pastor Leon Oosthuizen, Vredelust Church, Cape Town, South Africa | A Miracle Story | Mark 10:46-52
