ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

nvironments are important to God. Within the opening words of the Bible, we see that, before He created us to worship Him, God created the environment within which we worship. Creation itself is a reminder of who God is and what He has done. It points us to God and focuses us on Him as we worship. At Northland, we view the spaces He has given us as the opportunity to create environments for worship, to fill the spaces with audible and visual elements that focus us on Him, to see who He is and experience what He has done and is doing. As we built our facility in Longwood, we specifically designed the space for creating immersive and varying environments, both for the people in the room itself and for the people experiencing the environment in other rooms. Each and every weekend, several staff members and volunteers work together to create these worship environments. For everyone involved, even the creation of the environments themselves is an act of worship, long before the first service of the weekend begins. Our volunteers are vital to these

n Tuesday mornings, several Northland men convene to study the Word of God at the Mount Dora site. In two years, these brothers have worked their way through the books of John and Romans, and are now in the home stretch of Acts. I have watched them grow as men of God and am deeply proud of them. We wrestle through the Bible together, we apply God’s wisdom through the filter of our experiences, and we seek to cultivate a Spirit-filled lifestyle throughout the rest of the week. Not too long ago, the Lord sent a missionary to Mount Dora. She spoke of her call to reach unbelievers in a faraway city in Eastern Europe. The
Mount Dora men’s Bible study group felt led to become one of her monthly supporters. So each week, as men arrive with Bibles in hand, they place a dollar or two in an envelope, and at the end of the month, one of our leaders gets the money to the missionary via her sending agency. In this way, the Mount Dora men’s Bible study group is applying the equipping we receive from the Scriptures in the service of Christ. Equipping and service go hand in hand. Bible study (both individually and in groups) is made complete as you do what the Word says and serve others. Paul elegantly encourages us, “In view of God’s mercy, ... offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1, NIV). This is our goal in Mount Dora – that the variety of equipping venues we have help us put the Bible into practice by serving others in love. Do you attend a Northland Bible study, a recovery or grief group, or a home group fellowship? Add fuel to the fire of God’s Word in your life by serving others with the love of Jesus. Mow the lawn of a single mom, cook meals for a family with a newborn, feed the poor or serve on a Helping Hands project.
environments coming together each week and for creating the window into these rooms for thousands who connect with us live around the world. On Sunday, October 4, you are invited to join us for Volun-Tour, an opportunity for you to learn about the process for creating worship environments, to see the technology we use to create them, and to learn how you can be part of the team. Just as Volun-Tour implies, we will begin with a complete tour of the creative and technical areas of the Longwood site as well as time to get to know one another. You will learn about our process for preparing for the worship services and the opportunities to serve as a volunteer. You can ask questions and explore all you wish. From there, if you wish, you can stay for more indepth conversation and training opportunities. This event is for anyone, experienced or not, interested in learning more about the creative media team and how to be involved. Volun-Tour takes place Sunday, October 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. A detailed schedule and event registration are available at volun-tour.northlandchurch.net. Advance registration is preferred, but not required. Details: Sarah Mattingly (407-949-7170 or sarah. mattingly@northlandchurch.net)

When We’re Running on Empty, God Provides! JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
T
oday we are showing a short video and hearing a testimony right after service as a close to this series on our African mission trip. We were being the church everywhere, every day as Pastor Joel has preached today. Please stay after service and interact with each other as the body of Christ. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us to do this (go read it). The last story happened the last day, on our way out of Africa. We had been there almost nine days. I learned a lot about being rather than doing. I watched people be led by the Spirit in a way I have rarely experienced. I observed that presence, listening and eye contact were better at communicating than words. I uncovered just how much I don’t know, believe or have faith in yet. It was a revealing journey that I am still only now beginning to unravel. But it was all good, knowing the Lord loves me so much that He would gently nudge, woo and lead me to places I had not gone, or did not want to go, so He could develop in me something I did not have. A process I know goes on and on. I am reminded of one of my 4-year-old, Zoe’s favorite songs, “Trust and Obey, there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” Want a practical example? Sure! As we were heading down the long desert-like road toward the airport, ready to head back home, I looked down at the gas gauge and realized we were almost on “E.” I noticed this the day before, but a South African friend said, “You still have 100 kilometers when
the light comes on. Don’t worry; you will be fine.” I am not worried; we are fine. The light goes on. I am still not worried; we are fine. I look around and know that we are in the middle of nowhere. I have eight people in this van. There are NO gas stations to be found, nor are they readily present, and we need diesel. Still not worried; we are fine. Two gas stations come and go, and by that I mean a gas pump outside a small shack, NO diesel. I look down, and the gauge has quite rapidly dropped to the “E” line and is nudging below. I am a bit worried, not sure if we are fine. I mention this to my friend, who simply says, “If we need gas and the Lord wants us to have it, then a station will appear with diesel.” I think to myself, Yeah, that sounds great, but … I offer a suggestion: “Please lean forward as we go down the hills; I am putting the car in neutral and coasting.” They do so, and a hush settles in as they all start to process what running out of gas in the middle of Swaziland with a bunch of tourists might actually mean. Down a hill, up another. Again. We come up on a building with people outside and a greenhandled pump, DIESEL. A roar of cheers breaks out! I hit the brakes, and the van following us nearly hits us. We both make the turn in, and I pull up to the pump. Praises by all who have avoided whatever troubles they saw in that potential other ending to the story. “One hundred rand in fuel, please!” The guy working walks back to pump and quickly returns, requesting that we back up a bit so he can reach the handle. “Sure, no problem!” I turn the ignition, and the van will not start! Silence falls over the van, then an eruption of cheers and praises even greater than before! God provided exactly what we needed, when we needed it, not before, and not more! We got our fuel and headed home. A long journey with each other, with new people, and most of all, with HIM! The last line in that hymn Zoe likes to sing says it all: “What He says we will do, where He sends we will go; Never fear, only trust and obey.”

news@westoaks A Hunger to Help the Needy TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
F
or many of us, over the past few years, we have given bags of food to the “brown bag Sunday” ministry that supports Faith Neighborhood Center, faithfully. For others, you have given when you could. And still others of you have given to John Barabe’s Ton by Ten Food Drive. John’s ministry collects food every month, and then he donates whatever was given to any one of many food pantries in the local area. Because John has collected so much food, he has doubled his goal for the year. He wants to collect two tons of food by the year 2010. For all of you who have given any food to those in need, thank you! I asked Brian Kraus, chairman of the FNC board of directors, to share some of the stats associated with the FNC. Here is what Brian had to say: In the month of May, the Faith Neighborhood Center received more than 22,000 pounds of food from the U.S. Postal Food Drive in Clermont to add to its inventory. What a blessing! Unfortunately, while receiving additional food donations since the food drive, FNC has distributed almost all of its supply to needy families—an average of over 10,000 pounds per month! FNC calls the people they serve “clients.” Due to the increase in clients, FNC had to reduce the amount they give each time clients stop by. They now receive a generous two-day supply versus a three-day supply and can only receive food from FNC once a month. The FNC facility is only open 15 hours a week, or 60
hours a month. The average family size has been figured to approximately 3.2 people, even though over 75 percent of the families are single moms. In August, FNC served 880 families, which is approximately 2,816 people. Imagine serving 880 families in 60 hours. I do not have the stats for how many single people were served in August. The food FNC receives from Northland at West Oaks is greatly appreciated. It is fair to say that each bag of food will help a needy family for two days. Another way to help FNC is through financial contributions. When the supply of food runs out, FNC uses the money it has available to purchase food from BJ’s, Sam’s Club and Second Harvest Food Bank. FNC does a good job of spreading the wealth. Second Harvest food is purchased at approximately 20 cents per pound. A $10 contribution can go a long way. In an effort to raise money each year to help support the purchase of food, FNC has its annual Charity Golf Event. This year the event will be held at Sanctuary Ridge on Friday, November 6. I realize that many of us are on tight budgets and are making do with whatever we have. I also know that presented with an opportunity to give, all of you in our West Oaks community will give. We will continue to collect food on the third Sunday of every month until there is no longer a need. This is not to put pressure on anyone, but to allow those of you who can give the opportunity to do so. If for any reason you forget or the timing is not right, we can give to the FNC anytime, so feel free to bring in food any Sunday during the month. Thank you again for giving so generously to those in need in our communities. Your food donations go a long way in feeding the hungry. You are a blessing to so many! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Losing Games, Winning Hearts BY nathan clark Director of Digital Innovation, Media Design
Y
woman midway through one of the Twilight novels! In the afternoons in the villages, we played against the village teams. With village pride at stake (they didn't want to lose to a bunch of Americans) the village men played tirelessly and skillfully. Without the physical advantages we'd enjoyed when playing the youth teams, we found winning hard. (That's a nice way of saying we lost.) Perhaps it was also because of the increased physical demands that during these games we started suffering more injuries. Injuries weren't new to our team. I pulled a hamstring in Manaus, and we all picked up scrapes, scratches and bruises. But during our three days along the river, I pulled my other hamstring ruling me out of a few games, Kasey Brennan twisted her ankle so badly she couldn't play again the rest of the trip, and Aaron Martin picked up a series of nasty wounds and blisters that eventually kept him out of our last game. The idea of suffering during the trip wasn't foreign. As we prepared for this trip we knew there would be costs: Paul's admonition to offer our bodies as living sacrifices as acts of worship had echoed through my head for weeks leading up to the trip. But as we limped our way back from the villages back to Manaus for our final games, the cost of offering our bodies seemed to be realized. Our first night back in Manaus, the injury trend continued and while playing soccer with youth from IPM, Kristin Urichko was badly injured. On our last day we went into our final game of soccer with more injured than active players— only Christian, Dallas and James played unhurt.
ou may know that English is not the most widely spoken language in the world, but you probably don't know what is the most common language. No, it's not Chinese … it's actually soccer. Not only is soccer the ultimate world language, but it was also a tool used to break down cultural barriers and share the Gospel during a distributed journey in August. Our team of eight traveled to Manaus, Brazil, to join with Northland's partner church Igreja Presbyteriana De Manaus (IPM) in ongoing soccer ministries. IPM is a remarkable church with hundreds of church plants throughout the Amazon region, as well as numerous ministries in Manaus. We played together, prayed together, and shared the Good News together. One of the ministries IPM supports is Athletes in Christ, a soccer program that trains and coaches at-risk youth in Manaus. Athletes in Christ provides a refuge and offers a community of faith for the youth of Manuas. The majority of our trip was spent with them playing soccer, hanging out with the youth and sharing in worship and teaching with them. The soccer was competitive, just like we'd expected — after all, Brazil is home to the world's most talented soccer players. We had a unique composition to our team. Six of our teammates were from Central Florida, but we had two players we'd not met prior to our trip. James was from Night at the Amazon Fort Lauderdale and though Friday, October 2, 7 p.m., Student Ministries and Care Center, fellowship his cousin was on the trip, hall, Longwood site. Come enjoy an evening of worship, Brazilian food and the the rest of us first met him exciting news for next year’s Distributed Journeys to Brazil. Hear from Pastor Djard, in the Atlanta airport on the one of the mission pastors from our partner in Brazil, the Presbyterian Church of way to Manaus. We also had Manaus. Participants from past trips will be there as well to share their experiences an Egyptian on our team, in a warm atmosphere of fellowship. RSVP by September 25: Felipe Santos (acts1.8@ Nader, who met us in Brazil earthlink.net or 407-756-0537) after 30 hours of travel from Cairo. We were blessed to be a distributed team on our distributed journey, but prior to our first game we'd never played as a team before. Our hosts were kind and our first game was against 14-year-olds. We quickly realized what we thought was kindness was actually just a statement of Brazilian skill. While we managed to beat the young team, when they promoted us to play against older youth, we didn't fare so well. Fortunately our trip wasn't about winning games as much as bearing the image of Christ and supporting the ministries in Brazil. Winning or losing didn't matter (as much) because we were really there to encourage the ministry leaders and the youth. We received some encouragement of our own when we worshiped at IPM during their Sunday night service. After the service, we set off down the Black River on a boat to spend a few days at villages IPM ministers to. During the mornings our team split in half to visit villagers in their homes. We prayed with people and shared our faith in Jesus. Our translators, Rev Djard and his son Daniel, from IPM, handled introductions and invited people to join us for afternoon soccer. Most of the villagers we met lived in tiny homes and slept in hammocks. They kept chickens and grew fruit to augment their diets and relied on boats for all travel. But it wasn't just an experience of differences — there were similarities as well. Everyone had mobile phones, talked about Michael Jackson (he'd just died) and we even ran into a 70-year-old
With any journey, the experience echoes long after returning home. For our team that echo was especially loud. Kristin's injury turned out to be a broken foot and the recovery and rehab will prevent her from trying out for her high school soccer team. Christian Eissele, healthy and uninjured during the trip, picked up an infection in a small cut he picked up during our time in Brazil and spent most of the first week of his senior year in the hospital. (He has recovered fully.) But the echoes weren't just in the injuries many of us bore for weeks after our return. We all brought back a part of Brazil with us. We all returned affected by the joy exhibited by our friends in Manaus and along the river. We were changed by the faith demonstrated by our friends at IPM who ministered alongside us through our trip. As much as we hope God used us to change others, we know he used others to change us. You can read more about their trip, see more images and a video at http://www.northlandchurch.net/blogs/category/91/.
Teammates Kristin and Nader have a close encounter of the bird kind.

Answer: RELATIONSHIPS
Where Two or More Come Together Matthew 18:19-20 When the disciples asked Jesus about the Kingdom of Heaven, He taught them to respect children. Then He taught them the godly way to solve disagreements. Then He said, “Here is what I tell you. Suppose two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for. My Father in Heaven will do it for you. Where two or three people meet together in My name, I am there with them.” To gather in His name means to gather to focus on Him. Believers gather in Jesus’ name at church, at home, at school, in the neighborhood, at sporting events — everywhere, every day. Jesus is with us in a special way when we gather to tell of His goodness, to comfort and encourage others, to pray and to generously give others whatever they need.
Really?

Northland Goes ‘Wild’ for 2009 Alpha Conference By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Print and Public Relations
F
ollowers of the Discovery Channel reality program “Man Vs. Wild” are used to seeing the show’s star, Bear Grylls, taking on the elements in some of the toughest places on earth. Soon, Bear will take on some of the toughest questions life has to offer when he comes to Northland for the 2009 National Alpha Conference on October 20 and 21 in Longwood. Bear will speak both at the conference and during a citywide evangelistic crusade the evening of October 21. Joining him will be Nicky Gumbel, leader of Alpha International and senior pastor of London’s Holy Trinity Brompton, and Christian songwriter and worship leader Brenton Brown. This amazing gathering will bring together hundreds of individuals from churches across America who share the vision to reach their communities with the Good News of Jesus Christ via The Alpha Course. Started in London in 1979 as a brush-up course for rusty churchgoers, The Alpha Course has become a worldwide phenomenon. More than 13 million people in 163 countries have attended Alpha, with more than 2 million people in the United States participating. A recent study showed that in New England alone, 28 percent of all new converts were reached through Alpha. The Alpha Course comprises 15 sessions held over 10 weeks and is free and open to everyone.
No question is out of bounds, and participants are free to say as much or as little as they wish as they make up their own minds about the teachings of Jesus. Spirited discussions often ensue on topics ranging from “Who is God?” and “Why am I here?” to “Why is there suffering?” and “Is God a delusion?” According to Barna Research, more than half of all those who attend the course make decisions for Christ. Bear Grylls cites Alpha’s pressure-free approach, where no question is out of bounds, as a key to its success. “I have seen so many people find a personal relationship with God and a quiet strength in their lives after doing the course—myself included,” Bear explains. “Alpha is such a non-pressured and fun course, and it shows us how Christianity can be relevant and empowering to our lives.” At the national conference, participants will discover how to use The Alpha Course to address these and other challenging questions in a variety of settings—churches, prisons, the military, workplaces, university campuses and many other places. Alpha has just released a new, three-minute commercial starring Bear Grylls, which is available at Alpha’s social media newsroom (www.alphausapress.org). To learn more about Alpha, or for information on the 2009 National Alpha Conference, visit www.alphausa.org. You are invited to a special Alpha preview course hosted by Pastor Gus Davies on Sunday, November 1, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Longwood, room 4213. Whether you just want to learn more about the course or are interested in hosting or facilitating a course, this preview course is for you. For more information, contact Laura Young (407-949-7165 or laura.young@northlandchurch.net).

B
elow are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that reflect the focus of this weekend’s worship service.
The Connecting Church: Beyond Small Groups to Authentic Community, by Randy Frazee I once heard a pastor say that while “community is the one thing contemporary people want, it is also the thing they are least prepared to receive.” He went on to discuss how individualism has divided our communities, ambition has taught us to value competition over cooperation, and our schedules leave little time to invest in the lives of our loved ones and the common life of our communities. In The Connecting Church, Frazee paints a beautiful portrait of biblical community and talks about the sacrifices we will have to make in order to experience life together. Real Church: Does It Exist? Can I Find It? by Larry Crabb In a culture filled with so many different types of congregations — seeker, Bible, emergent, liberal, evangelical — why are many lifelong churchgoers dropping out? Learn why Crabb believes it’s time to rethink the entire foundation and focus of what we know as “church.” In his most honest and vulnerable book to date, Larry Crabb offers a compelling vision of why God designed man to live in community with Him and others, and what the church he wants to be a part of looks like. Organic Community: Creating a Place Where People Naturally Connect, by Joseph R. Myers Community is a fundamental life search and one of the key aspects people look for in a congregation. But community can’t be forced, controlled or easily created. The problem, says Myers, is that churches are too focused on developing programs – such as small groups – but should instead be concentrating on environments where community will spontaneously emerge. Organic Community challenges key leaders to become environmentalists – people who create or shape environments. Outlining nine organizational tools for creating a healthy environment, Myers shows readers how to diagnose their current situation and implement patterns that will develop healthy community.
NEXT WEEKEND! Sharing Life Stories
RELEVANTRESOURCES Looking for resources for your friends or small group? Here are some suggestions that will make great complements to Dr. Hunter’s current preaching series: The Body: What it Means to be God’s People, by Charles Colson (3 weeks – workbook plus video) In this new video series, based on his Christian Book of the Year, Charles Colson addresses the growing discontent with the superficial views of the body of Christ. He offers a fresh vision of the church and its role in the world today, providing practical answers as to how the church can reassert its biblical identity and become, once again, light in the darkness. As Christianity faces an increasingly hostile world, there is a deepening hunger among believers for a real faith, unbound by culture and free to change lives and society. Inside Out, by Dr. Larry Crabb (12 weeks – workbook plus video) Spiritual growth involves change, becoming more like Christ and less like our old selves. But occasionally, we fill in with a little pretending. The problem is real, and change will never occur until we decide to live honestly and allow God to expose our selfprotective patterns. If you want a more vital union with God, a richer relationship with others, and a deeper sense of personal wholeness, let Larry Crabb help you look inside yourself. Discover
how God works real, liberating changes when you live from the inside out. Life in the Spirit, by Robertson McQuilkin (12 weeks – workbook plus video) A Christian can aspire to a special quality of life – characterized by a deep and loving relationship with God, effectiveness in personal living, and ministry – that makes a difference in our world. This study helps one experience that through the power and fellowship of the Holy Spirit. The Life You’ve Always Wanted, by John Ortberg (6-session DVD plus workbook) If you’re tired of the status quo – if you suspect there’s more to Christianity than what you’ve experienced – John Ortberg invites you and your small group to join him on a road to transformation and spiritual vigor that anyone can take. Designated to help you make the journey together, The Life You’ve Always Wanted guides you down the ancient path of the spiritual disciplines. Cultivate new intimacy and confidence in prayer, discover the freedom of secrecy, taste the benefits of slowing life’s frenetic pace, learn how to be guided by the Holy Spirit, and more.

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Church: Everywhere, Every Day, Every One (1 Corinthians 16:19) The Church: Christians Gathered Scripture focus:
Matthew 18:20 (NASB)
Worship focus:
..................................................................................................................................................
......................................................................
“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
Worship Christ today as the Spirit of Unity. It is only through Him that we can be one. It is through His Spirit that the world may believe in Him. (John 17:20-23)
Notes: Summary prayer: ......................................................................
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen. (Book of Common Prayer)
