“ The mere reading of the Word of God has power to communicate the life of God to us mentally, morally and spiritually. God makes the words of the Bible a sacrament, i.e., the means whereby we partake of His life. It is one of His secret doors for the communication of His life to us.” – Oswald Chambers

ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................
a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................
Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.
Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

PetPals Ministry Offers Treat to Residents By jim hammersley PetPals Ministry member

news@mountdora
he PetPals ministry, part of the Community Care program at Northland, shares the joy of pets with residents of local assisted-living facilities and nursing homes. People who have a heart to fellowship with residents of such facilities, through PetPals, currently visit three facilities weekly: Southland Suites in Longwood, Tuscawilla Nursing Home and Rehab Center, and Savannah Court Cove (formerly Palms at Maitland). Visits range from 45 minutes to several hours. A regular highlight of our visits is seeing the twinkle in a resident’s eye when the resident gently pets or lovingly runs his or her fingers through the fur of the pets. “You will never know how much it means to the folks here when you visit,” a resident said during a recent visit to Southland Suites. “Some of them do not have many visitors, and it really brightens up their whole day.” When departing the facilities, we often are asked, “Will you be back soon?” The connection to the people and the contact with our pets creates a combination that often brings a tear of joy to eyes that have a lifetime of memories. The PetPals ministry is not limited to dogs –
part of the PetPals ministry is that you always go home with your furry friend knowing that the giver is just as blessed as those who were given to. Seeing the twinkle in someone’s eye, the smile on someone’s face and the lifting of someone’s spirit is always enough to confirm that the unseen visitor in the group was God. Details: Becky Yeager (407-699-4903 or leahyeager@aol. com)
far from it. Although our canine friends make up the majority of the non-human visitors, our furry friends are sometimes of the feline persuasion. I once observed a 20-pound kitty with the demeanor of a sloth. It would simply lie on its back in the residents’ laps and wait to be stroked. A rabbit made a wonderful companion for residents when paired with its lovely 11-year-old owner on summer break from school. Several curiously linguistic parrots made the rounds for a time and brought refreshing smiles from those who greeted them. PetPals recently held a picnic to gather all those involved in the PetPals ministry. Once a year or so, we come together to meet, eat, greet, and let our dogs run together with wild abandon, all 30-plus of them, from squirrel-sized pups to dogs large enough to pull a sled. It is amazing to observe how well they all get along. Even a miniature horse arrived! To get involved with PetPals, you need not have a pet; there are plenty of pets willing to be shared. All you need is a willing heart for service. If you do have a pet, however, we would be happy to welcome it into the PetPals family. There are a few The furry visitors bring great joy to the residents. requirements: You will need a copy of your pet’s vaccination record showing that your pet’s shots are up to date. Your pet needs to have a calm and friendly disposition, and to be able to get along well with the other pets. Your pet will be on a short lead (four feet) at all times. Please refrain from using retractable leashes. Just use your God-given wonderfully friendly personality to introduce your pet to the residents. rothers and sisters in Christ, the Night of Power was awesome! A huge thank you goes out to James Li and John, Adam and Abby from Fortress Hill martial arts school. The Mount Dora family is so grateful for your sharing both your skills and your hearts with us! From the weapons displays to the salvation testimony of James, we Northlanders at Mount Dora were encouraged and challenged in our own faith in Christ. Togetherness brings power. Togetherness with Christ brings a Holy Spirit power that protects and directs our lives. Togetherness with Christians brings a family power that fills us with closeness and motivates us to love. Jesus said, “How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings” (Luke 13:34, NIV). Though the rest of that Scripture is a lament for those who refuse Christ, the picture for believers is clear: the “wings” of God shelter and shape us and draw us into a closeness that bonds us together in worship and service! I invite you to experience the togetherness of Christ and His people in Mount Dora. You may already be an integral part of the ministry, or you may not have moved in that direction yet. If God is stirring you, then you just need to venture out in faith. Check in at the Mount Dora information desk on Sundays, or contact me (bill.chapman@ northlandchurch.net or 352-434-4116). Hancocks to Share Jesus in South Asia BY JAKE HANCOCK Missionary heading to South Asia
began making arrangements for our departure. It has been more than a year in the making, but we have finally made it. On October 8 at 3:10 p.m., Melissa and I will board a plane bound for South Asia. There, we pray that God will use us as vessels of the message of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We wanted to say to all of you who have been involved with Melissa and I throughout our journey, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your friendship, love and encouragement. We must admit, it is hard, not only to leave our family and friends, but to leave our home at Northland at Oviedo as well. However, we know that we are in your prayers, as you are in ours! God has been so good in arranging what we believe to be divine friendships at Oviedo. Starting with Melissa’s parents’ small group, to the worship team, where Melissa served, to the setup/takedown crew that Jake served with, we have met so many people who have become very dear to us. believers to take the Bible seriously! What does that mean, and how do we do that? Talking about our faith with the passion some of these men do is where I believe we all desire to be as we take the Bible seriously. This passion is not coming from Francis Chan, or his book, but from the truth of the Scriptures. God’s Word is a love story that is filled with passion and an obsession for you to know that kind of love personally. One of the ways I have challenged the teenagers is to take time to try and grasp what that love is like. How can they grasp that if they are not familiar with God’s Word? The goal of the leaders of the Student Ministry is to reflect that love letter in many different ways as they are spending time with teenagers during the meeting and also outside our gathering. This is why
few weeks ago, during our youth ministry meeting (“One Thing”), I asked the teenagers if they have ever said the words “I love you more” or “I don’t think you understand how much I love you” to someone they loved. It seems like all of us at some point have wanted someone we love to know exactly how much we love that person, so we use words, or gifts, or whatever we can think of, and it still doesn’t feel like the person understands. You might have said, “I love you so much more than you love me” and really meant it. You feel like your love is stronger or deeper because of the ways you express it. But as I have shared with the teenagers, our love cannot compare to the love God has for you. And how do we know this? Because it is written throughout the Scriptures, His love letter to you. And the truth about God’s love for us is it is a crazy love. Talking about crazy love, it has been encouraging for me to hear how the men’s group that meets on Saturday mornings is responding to Francis Chan’s book Crazy Love. In many ways, Chan’s book challenges The first gathering of students for “One Thing”

we are calling the Monday night event for teenagers “One Thing”! The One Thing we want them to know is how much God loves them and then how to respond to that kind of love. I feel so incredibly blessed with the leaders we have because at the end of the night, we make sure that everything we did reflected that One Thing. Jail Ministry Helps Inmates Get Back on Their Feet By Josh Mannen Jail Ministry Mentor/Volunteers
P
icture yourself walking through the dank corridors of a jail compound, constantly catching the eyes of inmates peeking out at you through the reinforced windows. You can’t help but feel nervous as you get to your destination. It’s not until right then that you notice that the escorting guard has left you, closing you in alone with 35 inmates in a small room. It’s also not till then that you feel the most inspired you have felt in your entire life. This is what the Jail Ministry and Mentorship men and women do every week. What we do with the ministry and mentoring program is a three-step process. First, we attend a worship service every Sunday morning or Monday night; both are offered to allow for the large number of requests from the inmates. Then, on Wednesday mornings, we offer a group advising session, where the guys all come together and discuss their times of release, situations at home, court dates, new things in their lives and so on. We all work together to try to get each other back on track, focusing on what they’re doing that keeps them in jail and what they need to change to stay out. The final piece of the program is the one-onone mentorship we offer to the inmates who apply. This consists of meeting with one of the guys for
about an hour a week while he’s still in jail, focusing on a much more intimate approach to understanding his situation. We try to really get to know them, to be their friends and help them through their hard times. Then, when they are released, we set up a time to meet for a minimum of an hour a week. This can be at a church, at a coffee house, over the phone, whatever; it’s just to stay in touch to let them know that they have a shoulder to lean on. It also provides support and holds the inmates accountable, which is something many of them have never had. Ever since I began the Jail Ministry and mentoring program in January, I have met some of the most genuine and down-toearth men I have ever met. These guys who come to worship Sunday mornings and Monday evenings could not be more deserving of mercy and grace. Seeing 20 or 30 inmates crying with their hands in the air is one of the single most powerful experiences of my life. When people think of what all inmates are like, they think of society’s outcasts. They think of them as the people who don’t deserve to be out on the streets with the rest of us. This could not be more absurd. Many of these guys are in jail for the 10th to 20th time, and have been in and out of jail and prison for 20 to 30 years. The sad thing is many of them don’t have the option of truly getting back on their feet. Too often they are released with literally nothing but a T-shirt, shorts, and a bus pass. Most
of them have no job prospects, no place to go, no home, really nothing. So many end up just loitering somewhere on Highway 17-92 until the cops come and throw them back in jail, where they at least have something to eat. The main goal of our mentorship program is to give the guys the ability to get back on their feet running. We try to find the best possible organizations that give job opportunities, housing opportunities and food. Many times, the inmates are struggling with addictions to drugs or alcohol and have never given rehab a real shot, so we speak with many of the great rehab centers to try and find a spot for them. We all have our problems, whether addictions, family issues or other problems. The truth is probably many of us have deserved to be in jail at one time or another; the men and women that are there now were probably just unlucky enough to get caught. They’ve simply strayed off the path and need a shove back in the right direction. That’s where all of us come in. If those of us who think, Hey, wouldn’t it be great if the world was just a little better? actually want to follow through with it, we truly can. If you feel like you want to change someone’s life for the better, including yours, then jail and prison mentorship may be for you. If you would like to inquire about joining the team, e-mail me (JMANNEN@ rollins.edu), and I will respond as quickly as possible. You absolutely will not regret it.
“ Seeing 20 or 30 inmates crying with their hands in the air is one of the single most powerful experiences of my life.”
Reflections from Seminole County Correctional Facility Family By GRETCHEN KERR Director of Life Crossroads
E
ach weekend for the past year, a group of Northland volunteers from the Prison and Jail Ministry have had the privilege of serving and participating in worship with the men at the Seminole County Correctional Facility. Sunday mornings and Monday evenings, more than 160 men experience live webstream worship in the facility. The worship service inspires the men in various ways; we receive drawings, poems, letters and their heartfelt thoughts in response to worship. We wanted to share a few examples with you …
Excerpt from “Speak to Me,” by Andrew G. Inside my head a voice began to slowly speak A fire started to burn and I couldn’t stand the heat So I got to my knees but forgot how to pray. “Father, I’m sorry” is all I could say, Take me back, Lord, I want to be saved! Please forgive me, I fell so forsaken He said, “I am still protecting you on this road you’ve taken All down this path you’ve never been alone For the Lord your God is everywhere you have roamed I still loved you just the way you are Trust in Me, son, I’ll never be far.
“Always,” by George B.
Drawing, by Joseph O.
This feeling I have This tug oh so slight This team in my heart Telling me to do right Often I hear its whispers Soft as an ocean breeze; Yet the temptation of this world Keeps bringing me to my knees. When will I stop to listen? It’s probably too late to care ‘Cause this other little voice Says I shouldn’t even dare Look at all the wrong I’ve done God would never take me back… That’s the devil’s best lie It’s his biggest trap No matter the sin I’ve committed Nor how far I’ve fallen back God’s always been right here Longing to take me back! His love is unconditional Like none I’ve ever known When your will is done, Lord, I’m ready to come home.
Each week Joseph is inspired by Dr. Hunter’s sermon and reflects during his personal time of worship. This is one of his interpretations of how the Holy Spirit moved in him.
Excerpts from a thank-you letter, by Joseph O.
Andrew G.
Andrew has been transferred to prison … upon his departure, he shared with us that although he was incarcerated, he has never felt so free. Praise God!
The [ministry] work that Northland performs in the Seminole County jail is a beautiful example of true spiritual inspiration. The Holy Spirit is truly bearing fruit through your labor of love! Your efforts to instill a moral relationship with God are superlative. He gives us life as we overcome. Your ministry conveys to me the patience God gives, like an image of an immensely strong rock withstanding all the onslaughts of the world…

Answer: THE WRITTEN WORD OF GOD
Study the Bible Every Day Acts 17:10-11 Paul and Silas traveled together from town to town telling people about Jesus. They explained the Scriptures (the Bible) to the people, but their teaching was not always welcomed. In the town of Thessalonica, the people formed a mob against Paul. As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. The Bereans were very glad to hear Paul’s message. They studied the Scriptures carefully every day. They wanted to see if what Paul said was true. So they were more noble than the Thessalonians. Perhaps their hearts and minds were ready to learn more about Jesus because they studied God’s Word, the Scriptures, each day for themselves. You can do that too!
Will do.

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
The Church: Everywhere, Every Day, Every One (1 Corinthians 16:19) The Foundation: How to Study the Bible Daily Scripture focus:
Acts 17:10-11 (NASB)
..................................................................................................................................................
The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
Worship focus: ......................................................................
Worship Christ today as the Living Word, the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us, so that we beheld His glory. (John 1:14) Summary prayer: ......................................................................
Notes:
Deal bountifully with your servant, Lord, so that I may live and observe Your Word. Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of Your Law. My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to Your Word. My soul melts away from sorrow; strengthen me according to Your Word. Put false ways far from me; and graciously teach me Your Law. (Psalm 119:17-18, 25, 28-29)
