300-plus Congregants Trained in Disaster Relief By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Print and Public Relations
L
ast Saturday, The Disaster Response Team at Northland, in partnership with ACTS World Relief (Active Community Teams Serving), trained more than 300 congregants in disaster relief. Volunteers trained in teams, which during times of crisis will assist with everything from medical care and food distribution to setting up temporary pet shelters. ACTS recently donated two mobile units to Northland, which the church will deploy during times of emergency. The Mobile Medical Response Unit will be manned by medical professionals, and the Mobile Kitchen Unit is capable of serving 30,000 meals ... per day! The units also will be used at community events to be held once per month, which will provide food and care to people in need, as well as hands-on experience that will help volunteers to prepare for emergencies. Want to get involved? Contact Gretchen Kerr (gretchen.kerr@northlandchurch.net or 407-9497190).

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then you were made for the blessedness and delight and fruitfulness that the psalmist writes of. I can think of no better complement to your daily meditation than to study that Word with brothers and sisters in Christ! Come join the Adult Bible Fellowship on Sundays! Details are below. >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1 (NIV)
J
esus Christ is the Word of God. We come to know Jesus through the written Word of God and the Holy Spirit’s application of that Word to our hearts, minds and lives. Last weekend Pastor Joel taught us how to study this Word daily. A critical component of personal one-on-one time with God is Bible study in the company of friends. We in Mount Dora have a brand new venue for the study of the Word on Sunday mornings! The Mount Dora Adult Bible Fellowship begins meeting this weekend, at 9:30 a.m. in the conference room. Larry Martin will lead this group. Larry is a retired U.S. Army chaplain and serves in the chaplaincy with Hospice of the Comforter. Larry is passionate for you and me to learn the Word of God and to be shaped by that Word. This Bible study is designed for just that purpose. Psalm 1:1-3 reveals a crucial truth about our lives: “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”

Oviedo Getting Better Equipped to Serve JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
T
he results of the Summit Meeting are in, and you have been heard! The leadership, staff and 50 other people from the Northland at Oviedo site met August 29 to pray, talk and pray some more about how we can be the body of Christ better together. The three main takeaways were: more connections, better communication and more entry points. All three of these were related not only to the Sunday gathering and the many smaller gatherings throughout the week, but also to serving in our church, in the community and in the world. All three also were linked to our being better equipped to worship God and serve others everywhere, every day. Since then, the leadership team and staff already have implemented several initiatives and have many more on the horizon, and I want to take a minute and share them with you. More Connections More connections to each other and others is a common theme we hear in almost all of our conversations, so it was no surprise that it was readily present in each breakout session. From more time to connect, pray and get to know each other locally on Sunday, to more creative ways to do these things the other six days of the week, the desire was clear: We need to get to know each other better. We have many creative ideas in the works for in-service local connections in worship, prayer and communion that will help foster this on Sunday. Plus, we are very excited about the surprise we have in store for you October 18 after both the 9 and 11 a.m. services. This is a direct response to
this heartfelt need and should be lots of fun! We also loved the response to Forum in the Foyer, with 12 new couples getting connected to others through groups in our community! There will be more opportunities like this coming up: the Wednesday night, October 28 gathering for worship, prayer and pumpkin carving, and the night of Thanksgiving and Prayer in November. Keep up to date with what’s going on, which brings me to the next item … Better Communication In response to the need for better communication, we have developed several tools--the Month-at-a-Glance flier and our regular e-mails with updates and hyperlinks to fliers, events, our Facebook page and more. We also have instituted the now famous green sheets, which are designed to be your easy-to-use resource with all the details and contact info you need to go and be the church this week in Oviedo. We also have a new blog system on the main Northland website, with updated articles, happenings and more. We also recently created a YouTube account, which you can access easily through our Northland at Oviedo Facebook page. This is a great place to watch video diaries from our leaders as well as congregant comments that we are capturing on a regular basis, helping you get to know each other better and hear what God is doing in all of our lives. More Entry Points Creating as many entry points as possible for each of you to be engaged in the Christian life is one of our core passions. It is why we have social events, service opportunities, small groups, classes and so on. From small groups and classes to get connected, to serving opportunities like the upcoming Luke 14:13 Project, we desire to see each of you enter into a deeper relationship with the Lord, one another and those not yet included. Please let us know how we can help you get connected in any of these ways. We have something for just about everyone, including you! Thank you to all those who have been praying and continue to pray for our site, our church and our community as we try to respond to what God has called us to be in this manifestation of the body of Christ known as Northland at Oviedo!
We have a surprise for you!

news@westoaks Your Story Is Part of His Story TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
O
ver the past few weeks, we have spent time hearing each other’s stories, and I have been so encouraged to hear how God is working and moving among all of you. I am one who believes all of us have something to say about who God is and how real He is in our lives. As some of you are seeing God do miracles personally and others of you are actively seeking God every day, I want to encourage all of you to continue telling your stories to one another. As we are learning to be the church everywhere, every day, I see so many of you have a head start in what that looks like. I know I have seen the men’s group that meets on Saturday mornings not only care for a specific family that needed help, but also serve locally at the Second Harvest Food Bank and do projects for local families. The men have met regularly. They have shared meals together. They give to anyone who has a need, and God is using each one of them to reflect His Kingdom to everyone he or she spends time with. This is the church being the church! And what I appreciate is their
willingness to talk about their faith, what God is doing in their lives, and how they want others to be a part of what they are experiencing daily. It is their story, but it is also God’s story! I also have seen many of you sharing your lives with others and giving to anyone who has had a need. From taking care of a specific family need, to helping and feeding the homeless, to listening to one another’s story, you are being the church. As I talk about these things that you are doing faithfully, I realize many of them come directly out of the Scriptures. In the book of Acts, we see what the church was doing to reflect who Christ called them to be, and how they cared for each other whenever they had need, no matter what that need was. It was their stories that they kept sharing and the things they kept doing that caused many to be added to their numbers daily. My question is, Who would not want to be a part of a community like that? In talking with many people outside the church over the past few weeks, what I have experienced is how much they want someone just to hear their story. As I listened to them and talked with them, my thought was how important your story is to their story. Where they are looking for hope, you have the answer. It’s not about convincing them of the hope you have, but sharing your life with them, allowing them to

see and hear the hope that is in you, loving them as Christ loves them is what it means to be the church. Thank you for sharing God’s story while you share your life with one another. As we do this more, I do believe God will add to our numbers. And not so that we become big, but so we would make a big impact in our community! What a privilege to know our story is a part of God’s story! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

LifeHope – Northland’s Benevolence Ministry The Needs, Challenges and How You Can Help BY LAURA YOUNG Administrative Assistant to Pastor Gus Davies and LifeHope
J
ob loss. Foreclosure. Vehicle repossession. Disabilities. Medical issues. Depression. Broken relationships. Life tragedies. Many of you can identify with one, if not more, of these. LifeHope at Northland exists to provide relief to people in our church and community who find themselves in challenging situations such as these. People call, walk in or e-mail LifeHope about their needs and to find out what help may be available to them financially to help with such things as mortgage, rent, utilities, car repairs, reliable transportation, gas and other staples, such as food.
People Whom LifeHope Has Served A gentleman who is a coach and attended here years ago approached us in desperation with his need. At the time, his family was living in separate places until he could sort out their situation. We communicated that our goal was not to just assist his financial need, but to reconnect him to worship. One of his two daughters has special needs. Each week when he brings his daughters to church, he is able to worship freely, and he and his family are served in various ways through our special needs ministry. They also attend classes and are rebuilding and reconnecting. He wonders why he left in the first place. Another woman who comes from a non-Protestant background has always been in a position where she has been able to serve many. She recently found herself in a place where she needed to be served. She began caring for her grandchildren while her daughter serves in Iraq. Caring for her grandchildren contributed to the depleting of her resources. Because she is in a relationship with a church member, that
great people skills, knowledge of community resources, a social work background and direct client contact experience to be advocates for those seeking help. These types of gifts, talents and resources, along with a passion to connect people to worship, community and resources that will put them in a position where they no longer need our gift, would be an incredible gift of listening, learning from and serving our church and community! Do data entry. We need people with data entry expertise to help us capture and store information that we gather to help us more efficiently and effectively engage and serve our guests. Donate a vehicle. If you have a vehicle that is unused or you are thinking about selling one, consider donating it through Northland’s LifeHope ministry for someone who has lost his or her vehicle, or whose current vehicle is no longer working and who is doing everything he or she can to meet financial needs. Call Bud Abt (407-949-7160) if you have a car to donate.
Facing the Challenges Together The staff and volunteers in place to respond to those of you facing rough times have incredible hearts of compassion and benevolent spirits, and have gone through pretty tough times at one point or another also. Many of you in our congregation continue to tithe, which enables us to help others facing financial challenges. We thank you so much for this, as do the recipients of your generosity! With great and extensive needs comes the need for wisdom, discernment and much prayer. Our motto in LifeHope has become a quote from C.S. Lewis: “The proper aim of giving is to put the recipient in a state where he no longer needs our gift.” At first blush, my thought about this was that it is next to impossible to accomplish this goal in one, two or three sittings, which seems to be about the number of times we initially interact with those seeking assistance. After many interactions over time, we noticed some commonalities among those who struggle the most: isolation, lack of community, limited family, broken relationships, life tragedies, limited education and limited life skills. We began to talk about how the financial issues many are facing are simply the tip of the iceberg with all of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues under the surface and much more extensive. Simply addressing financial needs wasn’t meeting the goal of putting people in need where they no longer need our gift. Therefore, the way we serve those who come to us is by connecting them to a place of worship and to opportunities to be equipped and serve others. Through these, people are getting connected, building relationships, developing a sense of belonging and feeling a sense of purpose as they serve others. Oftentimes, the resources they need in their lives come out of the community that they develop along the way.
“ The proper aim of giving is to put the recipient in a state where he no longer needs our gift.” — C.S. Lewis church member guided her to come here. Her grandchildren, who are from a different religious tradition, thought they would be rejected here. They “tested” Northland in their own way and, to their surprise, discovered people who loved and listened to them, served them, accepted them and cared for them. They now beg their grandma to bring them here when she has them. Some of our guests have connected with Crown Financial Ministries, Financial Peace University or one-on-one financial counseling to help them become better stewards and stretch what they do receive. Others have connected with the Peacemaker course to help them deal with and resolve conflict. Still others are served through Grief Share, His Way, the marriage ministry and so many more. There are so many ways those who lead courses, Bible studies and ministries are serving the guests we send their way. Lives are being changed!
How You Can Volunteer to Face the Challenges With Us Be a friend. You can help us put people in a place not just “where they no longer need our gift,” but where they may not even need our gift, because of your influence in their lives. You can engage those you may see every week at worship or in your small groups or ministries. Most people in need aren’t going to shout out their needs to just anyone, but are more likely to with those who love and care for them. Resources often arise out of relationships. Be an advocate. We are looking for those of you with
Help in other ways. Other Northland attendees who are serving in LifeHope include a mom and son who come in two hours weekly. She returns calls from people who are asking for assistance to help discern their needs and how they can address their situation long term in addition to their short-term needs. Her son helps enter information into our database. Another woman comes every Monday to verify documents, check references and return calls. Another professional woman enters data one evening a week. A young woman from India helps us create reports and do special projects. Yet another young woman is training other volunteers how to enter data into our database. She is looking forward to when she can start meeting with people. A husband and wife come once a week to file documents. A woman from one of our partner churches comes in once a week to return phone calls. Others are joining as well. If you are interested in serving, complete one of our “Serve” brochures to the attention of “LifeHope.” Someone from our staff will contact you for an interview. We will assess your best fit based on your gift mix, character, competency and chemistry with our team. Orientation, coaching and equipping will be provided as we serve together.
For Those in Need You may call our LifeHope office (407-949-7151) if you are in need. Thank you for your patience as we handle requests in the order they are received. See LifeHope on page 15. Details about LifeHope: Laura Young (407-949-7165 or laura.young@northlandchurch.net)

Answer: RIGHTEOUSNESS
Be a Leader 1 Timothy 3:1-2a This world has many leaders. There are men and women who are leaders of nations, companies, armies, schools and families. There are boys and girls who are leaders in their teams and clubs. In Bible times, Paul wrote this to Timothy about church leaders: “Here is a saying you can trust. If anyone wants to be a leader in the church, he wants to do a good work for God and people. A leader must be free from blame. He must be faithful. He must control himself. He must be worthy of respect.” Even if you never give directions or orders to anyone, you can still lead people closer to Jesus by the way you love them and the choices you make.

Northland’s Children’s Curriculum Used Worldwide, Leading Kids to Christ By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Print and Public Relations
F
or Debbie Blahnik, Children’s Ministries director at Northland’s Longwood site, it was a valuable lesson. One Sunday morning after worship, she asked a little boy about that day’s Sunday school lesson on David and Goliath. “Did you learn how David defeated that big ol’ giant with just his little slingshot?” she inquired. Crossing his arms, and with full 4-year-old authority, he answered, “Well, actually, Miss Debbie, God did it!” It was an affirming moment for the children’s curriculum team at Northland, which is helping kids here in Florida and around the world to grow in their relationships with God, and in the knowledge of who He is and what He has done. The team has developed a systematic, Godcentered study for children, covering Bible stories from Genesis to Revelation. A dedicated team of staff and volunteers has created hundreds of teacher's guides, games, crafts, discussions, puppet sketches, dramatic illustrations, Bible Memory Verse Songs, videos, storybooks and take-home devotional studies—all connected to the Bible stories the children are learning each week. Best of all, these materials are free to absolutely anyone at www.childrensministrywarehouse.com. Along the way, a significant partnership has developed between the Children’s Ministries team at Northland and the Children’s Ministry team at Iglesia Presbiteriana San Andrés, in Argentina. Since 2006, Iglesia Presbiteriana has been faithfully
translating the curriculum into Spanish each week, both for its own Sunday school program and for Spanish-speaking churches around the globe. Camilla Vilcinskas, Children’s Ministry director of Iglesia Presbiteriana, explains: “We used to just teach whatever a teacher knew, but not the entire Bible. Now our children are getting many, many stories, and are systematically progressing through every book of the Bible. It has made a huge difference in our church.” Besides our Argentine partners translating the curriculum into Spanish, Northland also has teams working on Russian and Arabic translations. The team also has plans for a Chinese translation. Dr. Margi McCombs, executive director of Equipping for Northland, concludes: “God gave us this vision for the curriculum as a ministry tool to be used all over the world, and we’re following His lead in getting us there, but we’ll have to wait until heaven to discover its full distribution and impact.” To learn more about how you can support this vital ministry and help reach children around the world for Christ, contact Margi McCombs (margi.mccombs@northlandchurch.net or 407-949-4032).
The children and teachers in Argentina are learning even more Bible stories using the tools Northland has made available on the internet.

Leading Character, by Dan B. Allender Most of us would agree that character plays a vital role in leadership. But does that mean the best leaders are nearly perfect people and have to present themselves that way? Or are leaders those who recognize their weaknesses and allow those shortcomings to be transformed into strengths? Developing the Leader Within You, by John C. Maxwell As he explains how to lead and not just manage, this noted author of Be All You Can Be shares the principles behind the leadership skills he has developed over the past 20 years, and offers readers the benefit of his expertise in motivation, communication, problem-solving and managing change. Organic Leadership: Leading Naturally Right Where You Are, by Neil Cole Is it possible that the division between the clergy and the laity is unnecessary and, in fact, harmful to the church? In Organic Leadership, Cole fervently says, “Yes.” But rather than doing away with the clergy, Cole argues that the answer is to develop organically grown leaders from ordinary Christians, realizing they are “clergy.” Using examples from modern cinema, personal experience and the Bible, Cole sets out to change our view of what a leader is and how one is formed.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
The Church: Everywhere, Every Day, Every One (1 Corinthians 16:19) Authority: Your Character as a Leader Scripture focus:
1 Timothy 3:1-2a (NASB)
..................................................................................................................................................
It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then, must be above reproach…
Worship focus: ......................................................................
Worship Christ today for His righteousness. He is the final standard, the ultimate example, for all that is right. As believers, it is Christ’s righteousness and His sacrifice that God sees when He looks at our hearts — not our own worth.
Notes: Summary prayer: ......................................................................
Father, we come before You today knowing that without You, we are unclean; all our best efforts at righteousness are as filthy rags. Yet, LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay. You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand. Do not be angry beyond measure, and do not remember our sins forever. Look on us and work in us, we pray, for we are Your people. (Isaiah 64)
