when dissolved in water, may disappear, but it does not cease to exist. We can be sure of its presence by tasting the water. Likewise, the indwelling Christ, though unseen, will be made evident to others from the love which he imparts to us. –Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889-1929)

You’ll Grin and “Bear” It
From crusades to couples nights: How God is using The Alpha Course at Northland By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
S
news@mountdora
o it’s official ... “Man vs. Wild” star Bear Grylls is going to prison. No, Grylls hasn’t been arrested. He’s bringing a message of hope to inmates when he comes to Northland for the 2009 National Alpha Conference, Oct. 20-21 in Longwood. While Bear has braved some of the world’s toughest terrains, including his famed climb of Mount Everest in 1998, the

E
very Christmas season, the city of Mount Dora hosts a beautiful spectacle titled Light Up Mount Dora. On Saturday evening, November 28, the heart of downtown will be illuminated with more than 2 million Christmas lights! This event truly enhances the Christmas spirit for those of us who call Lake County our home. But there is another light that shines in our community — the light of Jesus Christ. It shines with brilliance through the lives of Northlanders at Mount Dora. One man, a salesman at a local business, touches people time and time again with the light of Jesus. Hundreds of his customers have received encouragement and prayer through this faithful man. Another Northlander lives next to an elderly couple who have difficulty getting out of the house. Each morning she brings their newspaper to their door so they don’t have to walk to the street. A third Northlander is employed in a local business that now buzzes with stories of the work of God in the lives of her clients and coworkers.
Discovery Channel mainstay says his greatest adventure has been as a believer in Christ. “I have learned over the years from numerous expeditions, close calls and hairy moments, that it takes a proud man to say that he never needs any help. And I have yet to meet an atheist in the Death Zone on Everest or in a lifeboat,” Bear says. In the weeks leading up to his visit to the prison, episodes of “Man vs. Wild” are being played in the prison chapel on DVD to help introduce inmates to Grylls who, in turn, will introduce them to The Alpha Course.
What Is Alpha?
If you have a passion for winning people to Christ, then you’ll want to check out Alpha. Started in London in 1979 as a brush-up course for rusty churchgoers, The Alpha Course has become a worldwide phenomenon. More than 13 million people in 163 countries have attended an Alpha course, with more than 2 million people in the U.S. participating. A recent study showed that in New England alone, 28 percent of all new converts were reached through Alpha. The way it works is a lot like the early church. During a 10-week period, people are invited to relaxed dinners, which are followed by discussions about the Christian faith. No question is out of bounds, and participants are free to say as much or as little as they wish as they make up their own minds about the teachings of Jesus. Spirited discussions often ensue on topics ranging from “Who is God?” and “Why am I here?” to “Why is there suffering?” and “Is God a delusion?” What excites me most is how the course attracts people from so many different backgrounds: atheists, those revisiting their own faith, even people from different religions. It’s a great opportunity to invite people you may not otherwise even talk to!
Another Mount Adorable has such a passion for people to come to Christ that he takes prayer walks in local parks and talks with strangers as the Holy Spirit prompts him to. He has personally led several unbelievers to the Lord in this manner. These are just a few examples of the ways in which Northlanders at Mount Dora are bringing the light of Christ to their families, neighborhoods and places of work. How can you be a light in your world? First, nurture your relationship with Christ. Read the Word, pray, confess your sins, and worship Him. Second, ask Him for opportunities to be His light in your world. Third, act when He presents them to you. Visit a sick neighbor. Have lunch with a hurting coworker. Invite a school buddy to youth group. Help a friend solve a problem. The needs are there, and the chances to shine are everywhere. Let there be light – God’s light – in Lake County, and Central Florida, and everywhere that Northlanders gather for worship and service! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

More than half those who attend the course make decisions for Christ. Bear says Alpha’s pressure-free approach is a key to its success: “I have seen so many people find a personal relationship with God and a quiet strength in their lives after doing the course—myself included.” Not only is this a great way to introduce your friends and family to Christ, it’s a great way to help grow our congregation. Many churches offering The Alpha Course report that their attendance has exploded as a result.
Alpha: The Beginning
Many in our congregation, including our own Pastor Gus Davies, have been involved with Alpha for years. At the National Conference, you can learn how to use The Alpha Course in a variety of settings—at church, at work, in prisons, on college campuses and many other places. Learn more by clicking on the “Events” tab on Northland’s website. You can hear Bear both at the National Conference and during “Bear Grylls LIVE!”, a citywide crusade the evening of October 21. This will be a great, non-threatening way to share the Gospel with the people in your life who aren’t yet included in God’s family. By the way ... if you want to see for yourself how the Alpha course works, Pastor Gus has scheduled an “Alpha Preview” night, Sunday, November 1, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Longwood, room 4213. For more information, contact Laura Young (407949-7165 or laura.young@northlandchurch.net).
Want a Date Night?
In addition to the conference and the crusade, Alpha also offers The Marriage Course, which is held at Northland throughout the year. This class gives married couples tools to build a strong and healthy marriage that lasts a lifetime. Each evening begins with a candlelit meal, brought by the couple attending the class, followed by a video and discussion. Topics covered in this class range from resolving conflict and healing past hurt, to knowing how to make each other feel loved and having fun together.

Be the Church During the Luke 14:13 Project JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
I
n today’s sermon from our guest preacher, David Loveless, we are focusing on the role we have been called to, being like Christ in the world, both in character and behavior. As Pastor Joel has been building the case for us in this series, we are all called to be the church everywhere, every day, and that means more than attending a service on Sunday for about an hour, occasionally reading a devotional, or joining a one-time service project. Those are all good things, but we are talking about something more. We are talking about reorienting your life, your eyes and your ears to the call of the King, and the expansion of His Kingdom into this world, in and through each of us! In the main Scripture verse today, Jesus calls His followers to be a light, a city on a hill. This idea of a people being a beacon of hope, comfort and rescue to the lost and weary traveler was powerful for them and potentially world-changing for us today. What would happen if we were this kind of church, all of us, all the time? The kind of church that people saw from where they were, and knew could bring them welcome and warmth, protection and provision. What would happen if we were the church, and it was no longer a building people went to, but a people we had become? The Luke 14:13 Project, this Saturday, October 17, is an example of exactly this – being the church where we are, with what we’ve got, right now. A group of women have been meeting since June, planning and praying in response to God’s Word in Luke 14:13-14: “But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous” (NASB). They have
partnered with other churches in the community through our relationship with the HOPE Foundation and are throwing a banquet for the women in our community who are in need. If you want to be involved and haven’t been, contact Terry Tinsley (tatinsley@mac.com) or Maggie Jobson (mjobson@cfl. rr.com) and be a part of this with them. Christmas in the City, another example of this “church without a building” mentality, is coming in December. Last year, people through this event fed a hot meal to more than 1,000 people, gave gifts and gift cards to more than 600 kids, and provided a Christmas meal to more than 400 families. The event involved partnerships across our community to meet real needs people had together, as the body of Christ. These are just two examples of the many ways that you, the Northland at Oviedo congregation, have displayed Christ to our community, and although they are both service-oriented events, they are also both full of potential relationships between the body of Christ and the wandering, lost travelers in our community. Keep your eyes and ears open for the next opportunity God has for you to be the church, right where you are, with what you’ve got. We have lots of surprises in store for you to continue to engage with this concept and its real implications for the church, in this building, in our community and throughout the world. >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET
Pumpkin, Potluck and Worship Wednesday, October 28, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., NOCC. Bring a dish to share and a pumpkin to carve! Site Minister Jeremy Jobson will then talk about the class he will be teaching on Wednesday nights for the next three weeks at the NOCC called “Sharing Life Stories.” Developed by Pastor Gus Davies, this class will teach you how to tell the stories of God through your own life story and help you discover how to use your natural styles, gifts and abilities to take Christ into the world every day. Details: Amanda Hartley (407-222-7374 or amanda.hartley@northlandchurch.net)

It will be a very nice meal (i.e., shrimp scampi, fettuccine Alfredo, and so on), with the purpose of giving people in our community an opportunity to go out for a nice meal but not have to spend a fortune. Participate in Distributed Journey to Cuba in February
Local Service Projects
by Dusty and Corinne Cooper vanessa puleo Northland Local Service Projects Coordinator
I
sleGO Missions, one of Northland’s ministry partners, has been blessed for many years to take short-term mission teams into Cuba for humanitarian and/or religious purposes. We travel under a current license from the U.S. Department of the Treasury that gives us permission to legally assist the church in this great island nation. The connection between the church in Cuba and Northland has been tremendously mutually beneficial. Our teams are a catalyst of hope for the people of God in Cuba and allow them to dream about how God might change the face of this Caribbean nation. It is an intense week of ministry, connection, relationships and blessing as we participate in worship services with the local church as well as meet with small groups in the home of one of the church members. Spanish speakers are always a blessing, but we have translators available for each of our teams so communication is never a problem. Ready to go? Here are the details:

Answer: LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Be a Light Matthew 5:14-16; Acts 10:37-38 Jesus taught the crowd, saying, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill can’t be hidden. No one would light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine for others. They will see the good things you do, and they will praise your Father who is in heaven.” Peter saw how the good things Jesus did pointed people to God. Peter said, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Jesus went around doing good. God was with Him.” God is with you, too. Jesus’ light can shine through you, pointing others to God everywhere every day!
That’d be de-LIGHTful!

The Body: What it means to be God’s people, by Chuck Colson (Three weeks, workbook plus video) In this new video series, based on his Christian Book of the Year, Charles Colson addresses the growing discontent with the superficial views of the body of Christ. He offers a fresh vision of the church and its role in the world today, providing practical answers as to how the church can reassert its biblical identity and become, once again, light in the darkness. As Christianity faces a hostile world, there is a deepening hunger among believers for a real faith, unbound by culture and free to change lives and society. You’ll experience the insights, impact, energy, challenges and life changes. You’ll press beyond popular notions and stereotypes of Jesus to obtain fresh, uncluttered perspectives on

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Portable Church Scripture focus:
Matthew 5:14-16; Acts 10:37-38 (NIV)
..................................................................................................................................................
Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Acts 10:37-38
You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached – how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
Notes:
NEXT WEEKEND:
Worship focus: ......................................................................
Worship Christ today as the Light of the world. He is the true Light who came into the world and enlightens every man. (John 1:9) Summary prayer: ......................................................................
God of all truth … Ours is a seduced world, where we call evil good and good evil, where we put darkness for light and light for darkness, where we call bitter sweet and sweet bitter where we call war peace and peace war, so that we rarely see the truth of the matter. Give us courage to depart the pretend world of euphemism, To call things by their right name, To use things for their right use, To love our neighbor as you love us. Overwhelm our fearful need to distort, That we may fall back into your truth telling about us, That we may be tellers of truth and practitioners of truth. We pray in the name of the One whom you have filled With “grace and truth.” Amen. —by Walter Brueggemann, Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth
