“Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord – he is God! The Lord – he is God!’” —1 Kings 18:38-39 (NIV)
would love to hear about it! The next best thing to having a personal God sighting is hearing of one from a friend. On Wednesday, October 21, the Mount Dora congregation will gather for its monthly Gathering 242. The “242” comes from Acts 2:42, a verse that reveals the patterns of the first church: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (NIV). The event begins at 6 p.m. with a potluck congregational dinner. At 7 p.m., we will gather in the sanctuary for our very own Northland at Mount Dora worship service. We will be led to the throne of God by David Willis and the CREW352 youth band, and after that, we will open the mic to hear God sightings. We want to hear from you. Share your God sightings with us so we can all be built up in our faith! Look sharp; through the eyes of faith, you will see the Lord’s work. Ask Him for your very own God sighting!

od shows up in a powerful way. It’s the prophet Elijah vs. King Ahab and 400 false prophets. Elijah counts on the Lord, and the Lord manifests Himself in such an amazing way that a huge group of pagan onlookers all declare, “The Lord – he is God!” They had a true, honestto-goodness God sighting. Has God shown up in a powerful way in your life? Has He spoken a word of encouragement, or healed a sick friend you prayed for, or revealed the solution to a problem in your life? Has He saved the soul of a coworker, or restored a broken family relationship, or provided a personal breakthrough for you? These events cause us to claim, along with Elijah’s crowd, “The Lord – he is God!” Have you experienced a God sighting? If so, we would like to hear about it. As a matter of fact, we

Front Porches vs. Garage Doors JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
I
have a favorite author by the name of Wendell Berry. He writes for The New Yorker and other magazines, and some of his work has been compiled into great books. I was assigned one of his books, What Are People For?, in a class at the seminary last spring, and it has been rocking me ever since. He writes about the exchanges we have made over the last 100 years in our country and culture. For example, he goes on and on about the tradeoffs between efficiency and quality, between variety and value, between machines and people. He draws many glaring conclusions about the many presuppositions that were made in the pursuit of “better” or “improved.” In one essay, he says we have made huge assumptions about the need for people to get off the farms as soon as they can, go get educated and climb the corporate ladder, so they can chase down all those amazing gadgets that are available and make life “easier.” He talks about the humor and irony of just those people now going out to the country to buy farmhouses to vacation or retire at. He talks about the tyranny of choices that we have today that often result in “analysis paralysis” and, more often than not, the inability to make any choices at all. But one of my favorite images he draws attention to is the transition we have made in home construction, from front porches that people would visit and socialize with their neighbors on, to walled-in communities with gates and houses that have a big metal door on the front, which opens to let the residents in and then quickly closes behind them, preventing any sort of possible connection.
I think these observations not only say a lot about our country and the kids we have running around, the politicians leading, the families falling apart, the schools rotting away, the moral fabric fraying at the seams and the individual lives wandering aimlessly, but I think they say a lot about the state of the church. I don’t mean the building; I mean the people, the bride of Christ, you, me, us! We must fight against these tendencies to isolate ourselves, or to trade in the call we have had for 2,000 years for the newest and brightest thing that grabs our attention. And, most importantly, we must do it together! That is what today and the big surprise are all about! Enjoy!
Pumpkin, Potluck and Worship
Wednesday, October 28 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., NOCC. Bring a dish to share, a pumpkin and carving tools! Learn about “Sharing Life Stories,” a course Pastor Gus Davies developed, which Oviedo site Minister Jeremy Jobson will teach. The course will teach you to tell the stories of God through your own life story and help you discover how to use your natural styles, gifts and abilities to take Christ into the world every day. A Place Where Everyone Knows Your Name
H
ave you ever been to a place where when you walk in, everyone knows your name? I am not a big Starbucks guy (mostly because I don’t like coffee enough to spend that kind of money), but I met someone there recently, and I was so amazed at how everyone knew everybody. Not only did the employees know the names of just about everyone who walked through the doors, but so did the customers. I caught myself just listening to the people there sharing their lives with one another, and I loved it. When I think about being the church wherever we are, that was a great picture you could not miss. It was not just small talk or “How are you?” kind of stuff, but more like “How was the time with your mom last night?” and “Did you work everything out with your friend last weekend?” I really did see people sharing life stories. And we all have them, but we don’t all share them, for all kinds of different reasons. This is one of the reasons why I am starting a class called “Sharing Life Stories” today and for the next three weeks at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary at West Oaks. I want all of you to know how important your story is in the story God is telling today. So if you would like to know more about how to share your life story with others, stick around after the service. There have been so many other places where I have seen people getting to know each other really well. At our recent youth leadership meeting, I heard one of our leaders mention how teenagers feel about being a part of One Thing, the youth

ministry for the West Oaks site. You may recall your high school days and how tough it was fitting in and feeling like you belong, especially from a freshman’s perspective. But they feel different at One Thing because everyone seems to be on the same level. There is no distinction between classes, and everyone wants everyone else to be a part of what is happening. And that says a lot about our leadership team members and how they are caring for and loving teenagers. If you are looking for a place to connect with others, another place I am excited about is the House Blend Café. I know I have mentioned this before, but every Friday night in November, House Blend Café is offering a great meal (only $2.99 per person) and an opportunity to meet other folks from our community who also want to meet others. The hope is that this will be a start for those people who are interested in connecting with others. But it is also an opportunity for you to go out for a nice meal and spend some quality time with a spouse or close friend. Finally, I have seen West Oaks as a place where everyone knows your name or, in some cases, is getting to know your name. I have seen you connecting not only with different ministries, but also with one another. As many of you have gone to lunch with one another, been to each other’s houses and done date nights together, I encourage you to keep caring for each other and at the same time looking for others whom you could spend time with and get to know. I know from being around others outside the church walls, people are looking for a place where everyone knows their names. And that is because that is how God created us – to be in relationship! Keep being the church wherever you are, loving and caring for others as Christ has called you to do. I am so privileged to be your partner in ministry!

Local Partner Spotlight – HOPE Foundation A Northland-supported ministry By Joan Faulkner Director of Business Development, HOPE Foundation
I
n 2006, Rick and Krissy Todd decided to reach out to a homeless family that approached them at their son’s soccer practice. The father had been laid off from his job in the construction industry, and the mom lost her job after a prolonged stay in the hospital due to gestational diabetes. Subsequently, they lost their home and ended up living in their car, which was then repossessed. They lost all their personal possessions, which left them living on the streets. Using their contacts and resources, Rick and Krissy were able to rebuild this couple’s lives by placing them into a temporary living facility, getting them clothing and food, and helping them get their personal documents. They were successful in getting this couple back on their feet. In the process of assisting this family, Rick and Krissy discovered that despite the fact that there are resources available out there, it is extremely difficult for the homeless and poor to gain access to services. This experience revealed a gap in services, especially for families. It was at this time that their vision became clear, and they established The HOPE Foundation, which now has 11 staff members and more than 350 volunteers with a heart for the mission.
What HOPE Offers
HOPE serves the community in several ways. First, we meet our family’s basic needs through the Sonshine Community Thrift Store, which provides our clients with everything they need, such as clothing, shoes, school supplies, housewares and bedding. All items are donated and are distributed at no charge to clients in need and who qualify to receive assistance from HOPE. Items donated are also for sale at our store. Proceeds from the sale of these items provide financial support to HOPE. Second, we have our Emergency Food Pantry, which provides food to more than 1,000 families per month. We provide nonperishable food, produce, meat and fresh bread to clients three days a week at no charge. The pantry is an official partner of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and The Emergency Food Assistance Program. This year, we started a summer lunch program, Kids of HOPE, and served 350 children lunch all summer at no charge to their families. The most important part of our vision is the Village of HOPE, a multifaceted facility that will offer a one-stop compendium of services for individuals and families in crisis, envisioned to include a full-service resource/educational facility offering on-site case management, counseling and employment services; educational programs; life skills training; after-school tutoring; advocacy services; and linkage and referral. HOPE will be able to increase its efficiency and expand its services to include job readiness workshops, GED preparation and testing, connecting
clients with potential employers, helping clients to access affordable housing, life skills workshops and counseling. The ultimate goal is to help unemployed and underemployed individuals have the opportunity to educate themselves, enabling them to move into better paying jobs and achieve self-sufficiency. Ultimately, the community at large will benefit, as disadvantaged citizens will be enabled to become the best that they can be and can contribute to the quality of life of the broader community. HOPE also hosts the outreach event Christmas in the City, in which churches from the community provide a Christmas for those who may have gone without. Last year we provided more than 500 families with a complete Christmas dinner, more than 600 children with two new gifts, 215 gift cards for teens and a hot meal for more than 1,000 guests. HOPE is a partner in Pathways to Home, a collaborative of nonprofit agencies focused on serving families in crisis. Northland is also a part of this collaborative and is providing the Resource Point software that will network all services.
What You Can Do for HOPE
There are many ways to get involved at HOPE, from volunteering in the Thrift Store and Food Pantry, to helping with our fundraisers and events. HOPE has volunteers of all ages, and flexible hours for volunteers. Our volunteer orientations detail available volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can choose their schedule, from coming in weekly, monthly or just for special events. Contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@helpforthehomeless.net for details. At this time, our most urgent need is monthly support from the community. We are totally funded by private donations, our thrift store and local church support. It doesn’t have to be a lot; $25 or $50 a month will go a long way in helping us continue to serve those in crisis. You can become an Ambassador of HOPE. Interested? We invite you to our facility to learn more; sign up at VisionofHope Tour@helpforthehomeless.net. We will also be hosting our “Vision of HOPE” breakfast November 4. Volunteer Testimony
I began volunteering at Sonshine Thrift Store and Food Pantry shortly after Krissy Todd and her family took it on as their ministry. From that day on, all that I have noticed a change in is the volume of everything and everybody involved. HOPE Foundation is to our community what metal is to magnets. God has provided this place and drawn the people to it. Those wanting to offer what they have to share, for their neighbor’s benefit, can begin their journey at The Village of HOPE. Those wanting access to the basic comforts of life in our society can also begin their journey at The Village of HOPE. When God brings these two causes together, He works wonders. I have experienced true joy from my time spent volunteering at this remarkable facility. No matter what I am doing, from the most menial tasks, to responsibilities that stretch me to learn more (in order for me to do the job well), there is a team of encouragers nudging me ahead. I love the equality of treatment expressed on a day-to-day basis among the staff, volunteers, “clients,” donors and administrators. There are no class or social barriers, just sincere involvement for the greater purpose of building a stronger community for all who live here. – Bebe Seabolt

This year you have the opportunity to help a student go to Christmas Camp 2009. By sponsoring a seat, multiple seats or even a bus, you provide an opportunity for a student — or multiple students — to travel to SharpTop Cove Camp in Jasper, Georgia. Each year more than 150 high school students make the trek up to north Georgia to take a break from life and hear from God. Students make life-changing decisions over these four days, and many of them come back with a new or renewed passion to serve Jesus. We want to provide the opportunity to as many students as possible, and you can help!

Answer: EVERYWHERE
The Birth of the Church Acts 2:1-11, 38-41 The church is not a building. It is the group of people from every time and place who believe that Jesus is Lord. The church began on the day of Pentecost when believers were all gathered in one place. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in languages they had not known before. People from every country in Jerusalem saw this miracle. When Peter explained that the Holy Spirit had come, 3,000 people joined the church that day. They returned to their homelands and met as the church in homes and courtyards – anywhere believers came together that was a home for the church. This is still true today. The church can meet in a building, on a field, in a boat, even up in a tree house!

Answers to Prayer: Learning Prayer and Trust Sunday mornings, 11 a.m., Northland at Longwood, room 4204 By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development
T
here is not a timelier subject for the difficult times we all are facing than Answers to Prayer, a course based on the journals of George Mueller, an English evangelist and philanthropist. Mr. Mueller, who was known in the early 1800s as “the orphans’ friend,” was a man who lived moment to moment actively trusting God’s provision. He made an agreement with God early on in his life that he would not make his needs known to people; rather, he would leave it to God to provide for him and the hundreds of orphans for whom he took responsibility. Cindy and Mickey Mallin, who are no strangers to answers to prayer, teach this inspirational class. Mickey came to Christ 3 ½ years ago, shortly after he met Cindy. They were both going through challenging times when they met at a dance in 2005. Mickey asked for Cindy’s phone number, but she turned him down. Mickey knew instantly there was something different about this woman. At 5 feet 3 inches, she stood 10 feet tall. They became friends, and he agreed to come to church with her. He recalls his first visit to Northland. When the music started, he turned to her and said, “What awesome entertainment!” She whispered, “We call it worship.” As he met her friends and continued coming to worship, he began to ask for prayer for his own faith. With a Jewish background, Mickey had lots of questions. He asked about the emotion surrounding Communion. He didn’t really understand when, on March 12, 2006, a clip from The Passion of the
Christ was shown during the worship service. They went out afterward and, in spite of literally dozens of obstacles, found the movie and rented it. By the final scene, Mickey got it. He accepted Christ that day. That December, he asked Cindy to marry him. But that was only the beginning of their answered prayers. Over time, they developed the habit of reading aloud to each other. Cindy had read George Mueller’s book Answers to Prayer more than 30 years ago, but God began to bring it to her mind. She suggested it to Mickey, and they started reading. But as this book was written in the 1800s, it is not light reading. Cindy began to paraphrase it as she read aloud to Mickey.
Along the way, they realized that this book is a treasure that has been lost because of the language barrier. They began to think and pray about how they might share this exciting story of one man’s journey of trust with others. God began to unfold the idea of offering this as a class at Northland. Cindy and Mickey met with Barb Olsen, Northland’s Adult Equipping director, and presented their idea to her. She challenged them to develop a study guide with personal study and application questions. They are learning amazing things along the way. God is proving Himself faithful to help them apply everything they are studying to their lives. He will do the same for you.
If you would like to learn a new way to live and to pray believing the Scriptures, and see the evidence of answered prayer, join Cindy and Mickey on Sunday morning. Let God pry your fingers loose from your life, and allow Him to take control. Be encouraged as you recall together the One in whom we trust.
now. Session 2: Mark Your Calendar!
Wednesdays, October 28-November 18, 7-8:30 p.m.
N
OW, or Northland on Wednesdays, is kicking off again October 28 with an extended evening of worship and a preview of upcoming class options. NOW is a family learning environment that provides each age level with its own unique activities and courses. For children, it is NOW/Wow! Grades four and five will continue to learn to be Bible detectives as they learn to study Scripture for themselves. Grades one through three have the opportunity to look further into the weekly Children’s Church stories with new games and learning activities that reinforce the concepts they are learning. Child care is available for children age 5 and under. This does require advance registration (see below). Middle school students can continue to join ABS (Area Bible Studies) – NOW, as they focus this session on the Lordship of Christ. High school students have the opportunity to participate in Doulos, Northland’s student leader training that meets each Wednesday in the Rink.
THIS WEEK!
FREE EVENT
For adults, there is a new lineup of classes from which to choose. Join us October 28 in the sanctuary for a preview of the session. All classes also will be available via e-learning and will be archived for later viewing. More than 400 gathered at Northland at Longwood to participate in the first session of NOW, with another 200 connecting online through interactive online classrooms. Read what participants had to say about their NOW courses: “This NOW class exceeded my expectations by going deeper than I ever expected.” “This class exceeded my expectations by giving me great resources online and in print to go further.”
Prayer Connection
Now there is a new way for the church to connect around prayer!
“This class was more informative and intellectually stimulating than I ever expected. It was more than what I consider a typical Bible study.” “My class exceeded my expectations by opening my eyes more to opportunities as to how I can serve.” “My class exceeded my expectations by helping me to understand the real suffering going on outside the United States as well as in our local community.” My NOW class exceeded my expectations by challenging me to expand my life experiences and gifts that the Lord has given me to share them with others.”
“Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” —Galatians 6:2 (NASB)
The Word of God invites all of us to share in the privilege of prayer. You are invited to post your prayer requests on Northland’s prayer wall, located on the prayer blog on Northland’s website. Northland’s staff regularly checks this page and will gladly add your request to the church’s prayer list. You also can see the prayer requests and praise reports of others.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
The Church: Everywhere, Every Day, Every One (1 Corinthians 16:19) The Place: Your Home, Office and Field … Scripture focus:
Acts 2:1 (NASB)
Worship focus:
..................................................................................................................................................
......................................................................
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
Worship God today for His immanence. His divine presence lives in us and goes with us wherever we go. When we are gathered together, we are the church.
Notes: Summary prayer: ......................................................................
Almighty God, on the day of Pentecost You opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of Your Holy Spirit. Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth. Grant that we would so be joined together in unity of spirit and common doctrine that we may be a holy temple, acceptable to You; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (Adapted from The Book of Common Prayer)
