Christians are like the flowers in a garden,

that have each of them the dew of Heaven, which, being shaken with the wind, they let fall at each other’s roots, whereby they are jointly nourished, and become nourishers of each other. – John Bunyan

The People JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

L

ast weekend was our big surprise event. I pray that each of you who could did go and share a meal with someone. Maybe there was a group of you. Maybe you knew each other. Maybe you found out you were next-door neighbors. Maybe you learned you work by one another, are from the same hometown, or know similar people. Maybe you weren’t able to go last Sunday, but you heard all about it and signed up for the next one. Whatever the case may be, we wanted to share with you the “why” behind this idea. First and foremost, we need to be in community with one another, and to do that, we need to get to know one another. We are called to be “like Christ,” transformed into His image, bringing glory to the Father, while being the good news. Church is not a building we go to; it is a people we become. To become something, one has to participate in the process in an ongoing fashion, most often with the help of others, like a pitcher becomes a big league pitcher with practice and a coach. “Becoming” is not a passive, occasional process; it is an intentional process that involves others. So we wanted to help move that along by introducing you to one another and creating an opportunity to connect, and with everyone’s busy lives, we thought, What better time to do that than right after church, and who doesn’t like to go eat on Sunday? Another reason we did it this way, geographically segmenting the congregation, is because oftentimes when we don’t know what to do, we do what we know, so we talk to, connect with or reach out to people like us. We often do this by gravitating toward people like us, but we wanted to encourage another way of doing this, by connecting with

people we live near, because you have more of a chance of creating seven-day-a-week community, accountability and relationships when you live near someone. You might see each other at the store, the stoplight or the parent teach day. This creates a community of believers looking out for one another, encouraging one another, praying for one another and even looking out for the needs of those you live near, like a neighbor who lost a job or a spouse and needs help around the house. Being equipped to be like Christ through Bible studies, small groups and shared life experiences as well as being like Christ through serving becomes part of your community life together. The first-century church functioned like this. It was groups of people who met in a larger gathering to learn about their faith and worship God, and who also lived near one another and met in one another’s homes, praying for and edifying one another in the faith and meeting the needs of those around them. This was a life of worship in community. Acts 2:42-47 explains it like this: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. It’s the church being done simply: by living, loving, serving and worshiping together in large and small gatherings, in their neighborhoods and in the “church.” Sunday worship is key, but so is getting to know one another in a way that encourages relationships with one another all week. That is why we did what we did last Sunday – we want you to know one another, preferably those you see throughout the week, so together you can grow in the faith, serve and live the Christian life. We will do it again soon; if you need to sign up, let me know, and we will connect you!

ast weekend was one of those weekends that refresh you after a long, hot summer and get you excited about the upcoming holidays. The weather was ideal, and the Spirit seemed to be present in such a powerful way. And for me, that is the beginning of preparing myself for the next few months. What I would love to see happen is every child having a paOne of the ways West Oaks is preparing for this Christmas season is by preparing a Christmas musical put on by the children of our West Oaks community. This is always a highlight for us, seeing kids telling the Christmas story through songs. I would love to see every child have a part in this musical, whether it is singing with the group, saying lines or being a part of acting out the story. We need kids of all ages, from toddlers to grade schoolers. The older kids will have a huge role to play, as they are able to memorize lines and sing solos, if need be. So for all of you who have grade schoolaged children, you can get in touch with Derika, and she can fill you in on the details. I also would encourage you to invite your friends who have children to be a part of this. Many times, this is how people from our communities end up being a part of who we are, because they plugged into something like this. So be praying for whom you could invite to be a part of our Christmas Musical. I would like to thank Beth Constantini, Heddy Frank, Derika Hacker and Bridget Murphy for making this happen for our

West Oaks congregation. It takes many hours of rehearsals and practices, tons of patience and an incredible heart to serve kids and their families this way. So as you see these women around the church, or at rehearsals, please thank them for their desire to put this together for all of us. If you would like to help in any way (with practices, building props or another way), please let any of these women know. I am sure they would be more than willing to talk with any of you and receive any help you offer. This is just another way you can give your time and talents to be the church to our community. Serving is so much more than just being there. It has to do with who you are and why you are doing what you’re doing. So if you are encouraged in any way to be a part of this, please let us know. I know, in the end, all of us will be blessed as the children share the Christmas story with us!

Participate in Northland’s Church-wide Food Drive All Sites to Give to Local Organizations vanessa puleo Coordinator, Local Projects and Partnerships

F

rom November 7 to 9, all Northland locations will participate in a church-wide food drive to support various food pantries across Central Florida. We continue to hear about the bare shelves and the increased need in all communities, and we want to step up and support these organizations in this time of need. This food drive comes at a critical time for many of these organizations. It will be easy to donate food. When you come to worship, simply bring your bag(s) of canned goods and other nonperishable foods, and leave the bags behind your car. During the first part of service, volunteers will pick up the bags. Last year more than 9,700 pounds of food were donated! Here’s where your donations will go:

• L ongwood donations will support The Sharing Center, ChristianHELP, Life Hope, Harvest Time and to help fill food baskets for families in need. • Mount Dora will collect food for an amazing “basket of love” project. • Oviedo will donate all items to the HOPE Foundation. • West Oaks donations will go to The Faith Neighborhood Center.

Food Drive: 3 Easy Steps 1 Bring a bag of canned goods and other nonperishable foods to church the weekend of November 7 to 9. 2 Leave the bags behind your car before you go in to service. 3 Volunteers will pick them up during service.

A Cost-free Way to Help Fight Hunger

A

ll across America, the cost of groceries and the number of Americans unemployed are on the rise. As a result, food banks are struggling to feed the growing number of people who are at risk of hunger. There are hundreds of children, elderly and working poor in our community that will go to bed hungry every night. The number of homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless continue to grow every month. Many people do not realize that these days, we have people feeding their children from trash bins. This is unacceptable and unsafe. Adequate nutrition is critical to good health, functioning and quality of life. You can help us feed the many hungry children, elderly and working poor in our community in a simple, cost-free, yet effective and noticeable, way. Three of the major supermarkets (Publix, Albertson’s and Winn-Dixie) where we shop for our groceries weekly offer a variety of foods and personal products at “buy one, get one free.” We encourage you, next time you go grocery shopping, to look for those products to purchase what you need and share the free item with those in need. You can bring these items to your favorite local food charity – or bring them to the November 7 to 9 food drive! – Gerry and Sandy Kleiner

This year you have the opportunity to help a student go to Christmas Camp 2009. By sponsoring a seat, multiple seats or even a bus, you provide an opportunity for a student — or multiple students — to travel to SharpTop Cove Camp in Jasper, Georgia. Each year more than 150 high school students make the trek up to north Georgia to take a break from life and hear from God. Students make life-changing decisions over these four days, and many of them come back with a new or renewed passion to serve Jesus. We want to provide the opportunity to as many students as possible, and you can help!

Answer: SOVEREIGN

Jesus is the Christ Matthew 16:13-18 Jesus went to the area of Caesarea Philippi. There He asked His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” Then Jesus asked, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ. You are the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! No mere man showed this to you. My Father in heaven showed it to you. Here is what I tell you. You are Peter. On this rock I will build My church. The gates of hell will not be strong enough to destroy it.” How would you answer if Jesus asked you, “Who do you say that I am?”

A-men!

Draw a picture of Jesus talking to Peter about the church.

A great plan!

How to Start a Connection Group

Weekend Bible Study Options

S

ince you went to the trouble to get up, get dressed and make your way across town to Northland to worship, why not get more for your trouble? Connect with other believers by attending one of the ongoing classes available at Northland at Longwood on Sunday mornings, before or after your preferred worship service: 1 Peter Bible study Sundays, 9 a.m., room 4213. This Bible study, led by Dr. Dan Lacich, will help you live out your faith with new vigor. First Peter was written to Christians who were struggling with how to live for Jesus in the midst of a culture that considered them to be outcasts. They found themselves to be out of step with a world that was increasingly hostile to the Gospel. Sound familiar? Peter’s words are practical and timely for Christians living in a post-Christian America. Details: Jamila Millette (jamila.millette@ northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1832)

Philippians Bible study Sundays, 10:45 a.m., room 4213, 15. Led by John and Carolyn Jones, this study of the book of Philippians will add more joy to your life as you learn God’s secret of content. Written by Paul while imprisoned in Rome, Philippians is a thank-you letter and a teaching all in one. Much of Paul’s goal was to correct damaging doctrines that had arisen in the new church. The book of Philippians is both practical and encouraging to us today, just as it was to the Philippians. Details: John and Carolyn Jones (407-831-5822) Answers to Prayer book study Sundays, 11 a.m., room 4204. Led by Mickey and Cindy Mallin, this book study will challenge you to learn to pray expectantly and trust God moment to moment as you read the classic writings of George Mueller in modern language, which teach trusting in God alone to provide for every need in every circumstance of life. Details: Mickey and Cindy Mallin (407-322-6101)

or children, it is NOW/Wow! Grades four and five will continue to learn to be Bible detectives as they learn to study Scripture for themselves. Grades one through three have the opportunity to look further into the weekly Children’s Church stories with new games and learning activities that reinforce the concepts they are learning. Child care is available for children age 5 years and under. No registration is required. Middle school students can continue to join ABS — NOW, as they focus their Bible study on the Lordship of Christ. High school students have the opportunity every Wednesday to participate in Doulos, Northland’s student leader training that meets each Wednesday in the Rink. For adults, there is a new lineup of classes to choose from. All classes also will be available through our online classrooms and will be archived for later viewing.

Prayer Connection

Now there is a new way for the church to connect around prayer!

Setting up a Connection Group is simple; just follow these steps: 1. Look for a few friends, neighbors or coworkers who have an interest in getting together to study the Bible or a biblical topic and serve the community. 2. Decide what you would like to study. Resources, including books, DVDs and Bible studies, are available through the Northland Resource Library (contact Suzanne McCutchen, small group Resource Library coordinator, at 407-971-2050) or the Northland Bookstore (call 407-949-7199). 3. Decide when and where you would like to meet. A home, coffee shop or restaurant are great places to meet! 4. Contact Barb Olsen (barbara.olsen@northlandchurch. net) or Jamila Millette (jamilla.millette@ northlandchurch.net) for support, advertisement and registration of your group. Your group will be set up for online registration. An advertisement for your group will run in the Northland News for two weeks. 5. Let potential group members know about your group. Grow your group through personal relationships, and invite people as you come in contact with them! 6. Start meeting, and get feedback from your group on how it is going.

Bible IN THE SANCTUARY

Led by Pastor Vernon Rainwater, Longwood site, sanctuary Come and learn to enhance your personal worship as you study the Psalms. Loosely based on Eugene Peterson’s book Leap Over a Wall, this course will include an overview of the life and prayers of David, the man after God’s own heart. Daily readings from the Psalms will be required.

Christian Living

Finding an Ark in the Media Flood

Led by Loyd Boldman, Longwood site, rooms 4213-15 Loyd Boldman is a true Renaissance man. A member of our worship team for nearly 20 years, he is an artist, an author, a songwriter and a musician. This course, written and designed by him, will teach you how to use the clatter of the world as a teaching tool, and how to make decisions that will ground you and your family in the midst of the deluge.

Theology The Doctrine of God

Led by Pastor Dan Lacich, Longwood site, rooms 4206-7 How do we know that God exists? And even though we believe in Him, having a deep inner sense of His reality, how do we express that belief to others? How can we know if we have an accurate biblical view of who God is? And how can we really know Him and have a personal relationship with Him? Pastor Dan will teach on these and other related issues. Dr. John Frame, professor of theology at RTS, will join him for week 3 of the session.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” —Galatians 6:2 (NASB)

The Word of God invites all of us to share in the privilege of prayer. You are invited to post your prayer requests on Northland’s prayer wall, located on the prayer blog on Northland’s website. Northland’s staff regularly checks this page and will gladly add your request to the church’s prayer list. You also can see the prayer requests and praise reports of others.

Stop Dating the Church!: Fall in Love With the Family of God, by Joshua Harris Christ gave his life for the church, but many of us find it difficult to serve her for an hour or two a week. In Stop Dating the Church, best-selling author Joshua Harris boldly challenges us to stop looking for churches that suit our lifestyle and expecting churches to meet our superficial needs. Instead, we should learn to love the church and serve her sacrificially. ReJesus: A Wild Messiah for a Missional Church, by Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch In this book, Frost and Hirsch examine the practice of everyday Christian spirituality and ultimately ask if what we practice today is what Jesus passed down to his first-century followers. The authors note that many institutionalized forms of Christianity have traded the radical way of Jesus for the stability of outward religious expression. Frost and Hirsch issue a call to the church to refocus its spiritual practice upon the true author and Foundation of our faith. Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens, by Neil Cole Cole shows readers how to plant the seeds of the Kingdom of God in the places where life happens and where culture is formed — restaurants, bars, coffeehouses, parks, locker rooms and neighborhoods. Organic Church offers a hands-on guide for demystifying this new model of church and shows the practical aspects of implementing it.

GOVERNING ELDERS

BELIEVE 16

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

The Church: Everywhere, Every Day, Every One (1 Corinthians 16:19) The Congregation: Your Family, Friends, Coworkers, et al Scripture focus:

Matthew 16:13-18 (NASB)

Worship focus:

..................................................................................................................................................

........................................................................

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”

Worship God today for His sovereignty. Nothing in the universe is outside His control. He will accomplish all of His plans and purposes.

Who is my congregation?

Summary prayer: ........................................................................

Jesus Christ, we worship You today, not as a distant, uninvolved God, but as the God who knit each one of us together, knowing the days that were ahead before one of them came to be. We worship You as the God who descended, becoming one of us, reaching down in love, involving Yourself in human history and human lives. You arrange our moments, our days and our relationships. Help us to walk in them with faith in Your wisdom and power. (Psalm 139:16)
