Celebrating the Arrival of Celebrate Recovery By Maggie Jobson

few weeks ago, an article ran in Northland News announcing the kickoff of a ministry called Celebrate Recovery. When I saw the headline, I was filled with excitement – a ministry so close to my heart would be starting at Northland! You see, my journey to freedom in Christ includes Celebrate Recovery, and it continues to be a passion of mine in all that I do in my home and in my ministry, as I work alongside my husband in his role as minister of the Oviedo site. Ten years ago, I was a sold-out college student at my church in Tampa. Anytime the doors were open, I was there serving my heart out. I attended a Baptist church at the time, so I was there a lot: Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, during women’s Bible studies and at other times. Everything I did was out of what I truly believe was a pure love for Jesus … but I was dying on the inside. If you would have known me back then, you might not have noticed, but in the quiet, at the end of the day, after hour-long quiet times pouring over Scripture, I still had an ache, an emptiness inside.

he men of Mount Dora are going on a fishing expedition. Not for fish, though … for people. For the next few months, the Tuesday morning Men’s Bible Fellowship will consider Jesus’ invitation to become fishers of men. It all began with a passage in Luke 5. Jesus is teaching about the Kingdom of God to a huge throng of people. A few fishermen are nearby, cleaning their equipment after a fruitless night on the job. Jesus borrows Peter’s boat, suggests they go to deep water and orchestrates such a miraculous catch of fish that Peter is convinced that Jesus is God. Then the Lord gives Peter his assignment: “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men” (Luke 5:10b, NIV). How do Peter and his coworkers respond? They follow Him. And they learn to catch men. Is Jesus inviting the Mount Adorables to become fishers of men? The Mount Dora Men’s Bible Fellowship thinks so. Every Tuesday morning, we will convene to study the Scriptures. We are counting on the Word to teach us how to fish for men and the Holy Spirit to give us both the desire and the opportunity to do so. Along the way, He will help us with our fear of rejection and our insecurity in our knowledge. God will show us that He wants us to be in partnership with the work His Spirit is already doing in the lives of those around us. We will learn to be clear PVC through which the Living Water can flow. The
The truth was that my “theology was not my reality,” as Beth Moore says. I knew so many verses telling me I was a “new creation,” that the “old was gone and the new had come,” that my sins were now as “white as snow,” that “where the Spirit is there is freedom,” … I could go on and on. The disconnect, however, was that short journey from my head to my heart. You see, my heart had been shattered. Not broken, but shattered. Years earlier, my life had been filled with hurt, shame, trauma and darkness. When I had come to Christ, I thought it would all just go away, and I would just serve my heart out in order to prove my worth. Then Jesus stepped in. The great Shepherd led me to … talk. This was His plan to help me sort through the darkness and climb out of the pit I had been in. Corrie ten Boom says, “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.” Jesus not only led me back to my pit; He hopped in with me to help me make sense of it all. One of the tools He used was Celebrate Recovery. It wasn’t just the materials the ministry offers; it was sitting across from other precious people (whom I had known and served with) and hearing for the first time that they struggled too. The closeness and community that grew out of Celebrate Recovery was phenomenal! I wasn’t a former inmate. I wasn’t on the street as an alcoholic. I was in church serving, just like some of you. I was hiding behind a smile and not understanding why I wasn’t getting it. Our Lord doesn’t ever do anything halfway, and I believe that His conquest of my heart was so that I would
be fully His – free from my past, from my hurts, hang-ups and habits. Free to love, free to truly serve, to give back what I had been given. Celebrate Recovery opened me up to a whole new world of hope where my Higher Power, Jesus Christ, would ignite in me a fire that still burns strong today. I write this to encourage you to not view Celebrate Recovery as something for “those people.” As far as I can tell, we are all addicted to sin and have our own hurts, habits and hang-ups. We all need to sit at the cross and feel the weight of what He did for us there, and then get up and move out for His glory. I now serve out of freedom! I don’t love or give or serve out of shame or guilt, but because I can’t imagine not giving back what I’ve been given. One of the thrills of my life is walking through hard times with other women and watching Jesus come in and set them free, because that is who He is, and that is what He does! As Celebrate Recovery begins here at Northland, commit to pray for this ministry, that it will be used in the lives of many Northlanders to set the captives free! Gain freedom from life’s hurts, habits and hang-ups. If you are challenged with chemical dependency or co-dependency, or are the parent of a prodigal, you will benefit from this course, which begins this Friday, November 6. Simple, Not Easy JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e should get to know our neighbors? That was one of the resounding comments after the neighborhood connection two weeks ago. We have had such an incredible response to that simple, but not easy, notion. We live near each other, we walk past one another on Sundays, we sit at traffic lights together, but it just isn’t that easy to go and meet the people in our neighborhoods. There are lots of reasons; many of them are legitimate, but none of them are good enough to not meet our neighbors. Why? Because in the verse we are looking at this week in Pastor Joel’s sermon in Matthew 28, we learn that meeting our neighbors is exactly what Christ told us to go and do. Both in Matthew and in Acts, Jesus tells the disciples their mission, which is still our mission today! Let’s listen to His words more carefully: “You will be My witnesses (Acts) by going into all the world (Matthew), but starting right here at home (Jerusalem), into all of Orlando (Judea) and even the parts you may not want to go to around here (Samaria – remember the Jews did not like the Samaritans), and even to the ends of the earth. By the way, all authority on heaven and earth has been given to Me, and I will be with you always, so don’t worry too much!” See, being great neighbors is the first thing he lists. Why? Well, it is kind of like being a good husband/father or wife/mother in the home, not just around town. If it is not happening there, the potential impact everywhere else is weakened. If I talk the talk at the different men’s meetings I am in but then at home am not walking the walk, the talk

Same sort of thing here; if we go to Africa and work all around the world for Christ, but then our own neighbors don’t know who we are or what we believe, then we have truly missed the greatest impact we could be having. Here it is in a nutshell. He told us to do it. We want to do it. It is simple; it is just not easy. So we are stepping in to make it even easier. Sign up now in one of the 12 neighborhood connection groups so you, too, can get to know those you live around. Eat together at some point next weekend from Friday through Sunday; we want everyone to have broken bread with their neighbors. Then we want to share stories about the new friendships formed. A
re you one of those people who like the time change? Do you prefer longer days or shorter days? I know I like the change in time because it seems like the weather changes with it. After a hot summer and a schedule that keeps you on your toes, the change is welcomed in my house. The cooler weather seems to bring on new energy for the Novak family. But I know many of you would be just as happy if it could stay the same year round. But think about what this time of the year means. From fall festivities to Thanksgiving to the Christmas season, most of these events include friends and family. And as we are learning more about relationships and making a difference in the lives of those around us, can you begin to see yourself as a leader, a minister, loving others and giving your life away? Can you see yourself at family events or events where you are with others, doing things that would reflect Christ to them? Is this what it means to be the church wherever you go? Maybe this year the holidays can take on a whole new meaning for you. Maybe you can be involved in something over the next four to five months that focuses on others. You can make a difference! But you have to make the decision for yourself. This is a time of the year when you can help others and know it made
a difference. As a part of the Freeze Warning team, you can help the homeless by giving old blankets and pillows, cooking a hot meal, or spending time with them as they are given relief from the cold temperatures outside. If you would like to help in this ministry and have not signed up yet, please e-mail me or sign up after the service over the next few weeks. You also can serve others by providing food for the Faith Neighborhood Center. We will collect food next week during the Northland food drive, but if you would like to donate food after that date, please feel free to bring in food, and we will get it to the center the next day. Again, these are ways you can make a difference personally. We also are looking for volunteers to serve one (or all) Friday night(s) in November at the House Blend Café in Ocoee. This is a great opportunity to serve our community as a couple, and House Blend Café is offering a very nice meal for $2.99 per person. If you have an interest in serving on a Friday night from 5:30 to 8 p.m., please let me know as soon as possible. Or, if the idea of taking advantage of this incredible deal sounds good to you, then join others in our community for a nice meal and evening out with friends. Don’t let the shorter days or cooler weather drag you down this year. Put on a sweater, and do something that will encourage others and at the same time make a difference in your family, your community and the world! T
he big news this month concerns our community development efforts and specifically the youth of Five Rand Camp. The municipality has authorized the sale of land to Leadership Outreach Namibia for the purpose of building a youth center. This is a huge blessing since many people have been waiting years for the right to buy a plot. The sale should be completed before we return to the States in late November. We will immediately erect a security fence around the property to prevent the community from continuing to use the property as an informal dumping place. Soon after, we will begin construction of a steel structure on the property. This will provide a roof suspended on steel pillars. Later, we will use mission teams for pouring the floor, building walls, doing plumbing and electrical work, working on interior spaces and so on. A rough estimate of the total construction cost is $80,000, assuming we are able to enlist lots of skilled and unskilled volunteer labor. We will use the building and property for leadership training, practical skills training, tutoring, youth gatherings and sports, such as volleyball, netball and basketball. This is the most exciting ministry news we’ve had in many years. The possibilities are endless, and this property will become the nerve center of all future ministry efforts. The property is located adjacent to the school sports fields where we will play soccer, baseball and other sports needing lots of space.
Book Progress Report As most of you know, I am writing a book. Several of you have been urging me to write it for years, and I have finally responded to your pleas. I began the project in earnest while in the States this summer, and I have continued my writing now that I am back in Namibia. My writing mentor, Eva-Marie Everson, will be pleased to hear that I am obeying her first commandment: “Write every stinking day.” As a result, the book is nearing the halfway mark. Who knows what the title will be once an editor latches onto it, but my working title is The Leap: One Man’s Journey Into Faith. It tells the story of how God led Val and me to Africa and how He has taught us the value of trusting Him with everything in our lives. I’ll keep you posted. My goal is to finish it before the end of the year. It will be my Christmas present to myself.
In the Namibian News Squatter homes are a reality throughout Africa, and Namibia is no exception. They are an embarrassment to the cities, but people with little or no means have to live somewhere. This reality creates a constant tug-of-war between municipalities and residents who are occupying government land without paying rent or receiving any government services. The city of Windhoek recently demolished 34 shacks in Otjimuise, leaving squatters with nowhere to go. Angry citizens continue to demand land of their own from the municipality, but have no means to pay for it. The city insists such moves are necessary to “set up the proper infrastructure, such as ablution facilities and street lights, before allowing people on the municipality’s waiting lists to move in.” However, the squatters only see their meager homes being demolished when they don’t have an alternative place to live. Many claim they have been on waiting lists for years, yet still need to provide homes for their families. The 34 families claim they were given no advance warning before the police carried out the demolitions. One resident
Concerning my health, we are pleased to announce that there is not much to report. I continue to feel absolutely healthy. The pain that first alerted me that Gollum (the name we have given to my rectal GIST tumor) was lurking in my body has disappeared. I am experiencing no side effects from the medication I am taking. I have slightly less energy than I used to, but that could just be old age. We are trusting that by December, when I have my next MRI, Gollum will have disappeared. Shortly before returning to Africa, I made rockets out of Lego-like toys with Calvin, my grandson. Now, whenever we video-Skype back to the States, Calvin jumps in front of the camera and yells, “Hi, Opa! Wanna play wocketships?” Grandchildren are such a blessing. We return to Denver on November 23, just in time for Thanksgiving and the birth of our second grandchild. Hopefully by then, Gollum will have disappeared and the surgery will be canceled. If so, we will travel to Orlando in late January or early February. We hope to see many of you then. We also want to thank all of you who have encouraged Val and me during our cancer journey via phone, e-mail and Facebook. It is such a blessing to have friends willing to travel with us on this journey. For the most part, we have refused to let Satan discourage us with this challenge, but there have been some days when we’ve needed the emotional support you’ve given us so lovingly. Thank you so much.
Distributed Church We are so thankful for Linda Frodesan from Ramona, California, who just completed a three-week sewing workshop for the ladies of Okahandja. We are so grateful that she answered God’s call to share her abilities with African women. We have gained a faithful friend and ardent supporter, and Linda fulfilled a long-term dream that God had placed on her heart. We look forward to her return soon. We invite many of you who have similar yearnings to follow Linda’s example and come share with others the knowledge and skills that God has graciously given you.
A Slice of African Life Very few people on earth get quite as excited about rain as Namibians. We get so little of it, it is quite an event whenever it rains. We don’t run inside; we run outside and dance in it. The rain clouds disappear in late April and may not return until the following December or even January. It is, therefore, the cause of great celebration when we get early rains in September. It happened this year. Our garden and our water bill are very grateful. So we were delighted the other day while returning from Windhoek when it began to rain. It is customary for poor women to gather seed pods from the ground, bag them and then sell them along the roadside to passing farmers seeking fodder for their livestock. When it rains, they all grab their merchandise and head for drier ground. It was quite a sight watching several ladies carrying four or five large fodder bags on their heads as they hurried to escape being drenched by the otherwise welcome rain. I saw one very frustrated man trying unsuccessfully to drag his bags away since only the women seem adept at this hauling art. Moments such as this are distinctly African.

or children, it is NOW/Wow! Grades four and five will continue to learn to be Bible detectives as they learn to study Scripture for themselves. Grades one through three have the opportunity to look further into the weekly Children’s Church stories with new games and learning activities that reinforce the concepts they are learning. Child care is available for children age 5 years and under. No registration is required. Middle school students can continue to join ABS — NOW, as they focus their Bible study on the Lordship of Christ. High school students have the opportunity every Wednesday to participate in Doulos, Northland’s student leader training that meets each Wednesday in the Rink. n ABS NOW, we talk about things that are important to middle school students. Over the past few weeks, we’ve had a lot of conversation about feelings of inferiority. As we read about Jesus’ life, we could see that He always accepted everyone. One of the big realizations for our students has been that if we are good enough for Jesus, then we should be good enough for anybody. This really resonated with one girl in our class. I gave the students a challenge as we closed the lesson one week. I told them that whenever anyone gives them a hard time about being different, they should remember how Jesus sees them. This girl really took my words to heart and followed through. She was walking through the halls of her middle school one day that week when someone began mocking her about something she was wearing. She responded by saying that Jesus loves and accepts her, so she doesn’t try to live up to the standards of others. The student who was making fun of her got very quiet and just walked away. I am so glad that she learned that her self-worth is found in Jesus. ACCESS MINISTRIES While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. These efforts are being led by Laura Lee Wright, Northland’s Access Ministries team leader (407-937-0549 or lauralee. wright@northlandchurch.net). We can best accommodate your needs if you arrive early for service. LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you. Details: Laura Young (407-949-7151) LifeHope Hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, at Northland’s Student Ministries and Care Center.
Special Needs Seating: People with wheelchairs, walkers or other special needs have designated seating areas throughout the sanctuary if needed. Lyrics for Visually Impaired: Printed lyrics are located at the Welcome Center. Sunday School: Classes for children through fifth grade with special needs is on Sundays at 11 a.m. Buddy Breaks: With Nathaniel’s Hope, we offer respite for parents of kids with special needs. Check the Belong section in the Northland News for details. Assistance for Those With Hearing Loss: Signed worship service is Sundays, 9 a.m. Sound amplification aids are available at the Welcome Center.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR.
