Leaving a Legacy: The Jack Eggers Story By Marc Mcmurrin Executive Director of Operations

f you’ve been coming to Northland for very long, you know how important stories are to this church. Our pastor, Dr. Joel C. Hunter, loves to tell stories. I recently read one that I’d like to share with you about a man named Jack Eggers. Jack was a beloved school janitor from a little town in Indiana. He didn’t have a family of his own, so he “adopted” the students, in a way, as his very own. When any kind of problem appeared, the kids would scour the halls looking for Jack. They respected and cared for him the same way he cared for them. A no-frills sort of guy, he never subscribed to cable, didn’t drive his car much, preferred to grow his own food and steered clear of the big city — never straying far from the tiny Indiana town where he was born and raised. In 2003, Jack was diagnosed with a brain tumor. In the winter of 2004, he died at age 69. A year later, Jack’s

generosity was revealed to everyone in a most unexpected way. Jack, who never bought fancy clothes or nice things, had amassed a large amount in savings. When his estate was settled in early 2005, the school where Jack had worked received a whopping sum of $80,000 from his will. He also left an undisclosed amount to his local church and another $120,000 to a local community foundation. With this final act, Jack not only provided for the community that he loved; he left behind a legacy of kindness and generosity that will live on. Jack’s story made headlines, and it is inspiring to me for so many reasons. He didn’t have much, and he wasn’t a financial expert, but he was a faithful steward with what God had given him, and he used that to make a big difference in the world.

“ Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” –Malachi 3:10 (NASB)

An Untapped Well of Good

All of us, as followers of Christ, are called to be faithful stewards — both with our tithes that He instructs us to return to Him (Malachi 3:10) and with our offerings. Like Jack Eggers, you too can plan ahead and leave a legacy that lives on ahead of you. To help you do that, Northland has started The True North Foundation (TNF),

o you feel at times overcome by the pain and struggling around you? Homes are going into foreclosure, businesses are failing, and those around you are gripped with fear. Are you worried about your future and even your present? When calamity comes, our natural tendency is to turn inward and hunker down for the storm. A long time ago, a widow and her young son were facing certain death. A severe famine gripped her town and her entire country, and she had exhausted all of their food savings. She was out gathering wood to make a fire to cook their very last meal when she met a man. The stranger asked her for bread and water. Isn’t it interesting how God presents you with others’ needs at times when you are worried about meeting your own? “I don’t have any bread — only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it — and die” (1 Kings 17:12, NIV). Obviously, their situation was desperate. But God was about to break into her life. You see, the man she had met was the prophet Elijah. The Lord had sent Elijah to her town. Elijah had been sent for her. He said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something

for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land’” (vv. 13-14, NIV). And guess what? She gave first to the man in need, and from then on, God continually replenished her supply of flour and oil! Against all odds and her own fears, she trusted God, and He delivered her! As you read this, I hope your situation is not desperate like hers. I hope and pray that God is amply supplying for all your needs. I know many who currently have just enough. Are you making some room for the stranger, the hungry widow or the young orphan? You can’t solve the problems of the world, so you shouldn’t let yourself be overcome by them. And yet, as you consider those needs, what is God asking you to do? Maybe Jesus wants you to give to the Mount Dora Love Collection. Since February, several Mount Dora families have contributed food and household supplies. Each month these donations are given to local ministries that feed the hungry. For the month of November, the Love Collection will provide for the needs within our own body. In Acts 6, we see the church exploding in size and influence. Yet, great needs were present within. The apostles wisely ensured that physical hunger within the body was addressed while the spiritual hunger outside the church continued to be met. So this month, when you give nonperishable food items to the Mount Dora Love Collection, your gift will go to a brother or sister in Christ who lives, serves and worships in Mount Dora. Just bring your offerings with you on Sunday morning and lay them on the Love Collection table in the foyer. Caring servants will ensure that they are received by needy people in the Northland at Mount Dora family. For example, leaving a gift to charity in your will may reduce the estate tax burden on your heirs significantly. We’re blessed to live in a country where the tax laws are actually designed to encourage these gifts to charities, including churches. There are even methods that allow individuals to make a gift now, while still retaining an income for life. What Are You Doing Next Weekend? JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

How do we get people more involved in one another’s lives and, as a result of those relationships and people’s common relationship with Christ, more involved in the lives of others all around them?

s we, the Northland at Oviedo staff and leadership, have been wrestling with that question for some time now, we have strategically designed social events, Bible studies, classes, service opportunities and the like for you over the last three years, always to this end. We want people to be in a passionate pursuit of Christ, individually and corporately, seeking to know Him and make Him known (that is the “others” part). We have been blown away by the participation of each of you in the various gatherings we have orchestrated, and even more excited about the fruit that has been born out of those kinds of things – with small groups forming on their own, and service opportunities being thought of and executed from a selfsufficient, grass-roots level. That is the result of our accepting responsibility for our own spiritual health and growth, then applying it to our lives and creating ripples of impact in the Kingdom all around us, in the lives of others!

All that being said, nothing has quite captured my gratitude to God as much as the last few weeks of response from you, the Oviedo congregation, to the smaller community gatherings idea. We were sitting at lunch with a congregant as a staff, talking about this desire to see people be more connected to each other, geographically so they would run into each other doing life. Then she simply said, “My church used to do this thing called Agape Meals – would that work?” So we started kicking around this idea of breaking the area up into communities/neighborhoods and strongly encouraging a congregant-led, grass-roots gathering to get to know each other better. First, we thought we would “break the ice” with this idea by creating a meet and greet, which we did a few weeks ago. We had you meet your neighbors after service right here in the room, and sign up in your area so we could connect you to one another. Well, that is what has been incredible. Almost everyone took the time to do just that. They got up, went to their area and met people they live by, some already known, and others brand new connections. We saw groups break out in prayer right there on the spot. One couple moved to help another couple right away; another couple started organizing a gathering for their community. It was awesome! That leads me to the push for next weekend. We are asking each of you to connect with those in your community by e-mail or phone and set up a meal together. At some point between Friday, November 13 and Sunday, November 15, get together and eat a meal. Have a picnic, a barbecue, breakfast, whatever. You decide, you meet, and you get to know one another. Then we will see what happens next. Maybe we will begin to see and feel the “awe and wonder” Luke tells us of in Acts 2:42-47, and maybe many will be added to our numbers daily. e have an opportunity to help families in crisis right now. Bethany Christian Services, of Chicago, has opened a Central Florida chapter, in Winter Garden. They are looking for 10 qualified families in our community that can serve families in crisis as intervention prior to children entering the foster care system. It is a chance to help families in crisis to regroup, refocus and bounce back. Many of their issues are dealing with the financial crisis of today. Bethany Christian Services is having a free informational meeting and dinner November 10 at House Blend Café to explain the program it has recently started in Central Florida. Dinner will start at 6 p.m., and the program will start at 6:30 p.m. You can help in many other ways, as the organization reaches out to the community for support. Here are ways you can help Bethany Christian Services obtain its goal for this year to get 10 families that are willing to stand with these families in crisis: • Share with friends and family the need for the 10 families by the end of the year.

• Invite those interested to come to the dinner November 10 at House Blend Café. • You can also be a family who mentors a child and/or family in crisis. I am sure we are all aware of families in crisis situations, and here is our chance to be the church right here in our own community. Everywhere you look, there are more and more people facing difficult situations. So please pray about being a family that can help out a family in its time of need. This is an amazing chance to be a home and hope to a family in crisis. The time commitment will fluctuate from family to family and situation to situation. But it will always be a temporary solution! Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Collection November 16-23 Help Minister to Children Worldwide BY vanessa puleo Local Projects and Partnerships

he Operation Christmas Child season is upon us, and you have the opportunity to bless children around the world by bringing your gifts to Northland again this year. Through your gifts, pre-packed in shoeboxes, you would minister to boys and girls who suffer from war, poverty, disease and natural disaster by demonstrating the love of God. Operation Christmas Child distributes the gifts in almost 100 countries, and works in and through local churches where possible, offering children Gospel literature and culturally appropriate evangelistic and followup programs. The shoebox gifts open doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ. National Collection Week for the shoeboxes is November 16 to 23. In recent weeks, Northlanders have been busy contacting prospective churches in the area to coordinate our collecting their shoeboxes during collection week. Our Children’s Ministries leaders, through each child, are working hard to get information to all families represented to help them fully understand the scope of this operation and how important they are in making this week work. You can drop off your shoebox already completed (instructions here), or you can volunteer to come on site and help collect shoeboxes.

How to Deliver a Completed Shoebox:

1. Use an empty standard-sized shoebox or a small plastic container (six-quart). You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. 2. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Print out the appropriate label from www.samaritan. org or get labels from the Operation Christmas Child brochure. Brochures are available at all Northland sites. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box. 3. Fill the box(es) with gifts. Gift ideas include small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, coloring books, paper, hard candy, gum, lollipops, jewelry, flashlights (with extra batteries), even hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and washcloths. Other ideas are found at www. samaritan.org. Do not include used or damaged items; war-related items, such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or other food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items, such as snow globes or glass containers; or aerosol cans. 4. You also may include a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family in a separate envelope. 5. Samaritan’s Purse asks that you donate $7 or more for each shoebox you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can write a check to Samaritan’s Purse (note “OCC” on memo line) and place it in an envelope inside your box. If you are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation.

6. Place a rubber band around each shoebox and lid, and drop the shoebox off at a collection site. ecently, I was in tears with a new Muslim friend. We had just met an hour before, as we began making sandwiches for a few homeless people waiting outside the mosque. My six-year-old daughter was with me that morning, along with a couple of friends, Kurt and Courtney. This was the second time we ventured downtown to serve some people struggling in our community. Now we have formed an assembly line inside the kitchen area of the mosque; my daughter, Emerson, zipped up the plastic bags after I stuffed them. There were probably 12 of us working. Everyone had a simple task and was overqualified for such a menial job. We hit it off instantly. When the bread ran out, we had made 125 sandwiches. Then we sat in a circle and talked about our hope for that morning. The biggest emphasis of this group was to meet some of the homeless people, encourage them and get to know their story.

The doors opened, and we set the tables with brown bags and fruit punch. A line immediately formed, and in a matter of seconds, we were handing out food and mingling with some amazing people. A variety of people were in the line: married, single, children, grandparents and young adults. My new Muslim friend, Natalie, broke down. The weight of that picture was too much for her to contain inwardly. Several of us returned inside the mosque to consider the gravity of the moment. Something connected us that morning, something stirring deep beneath the surface of handing out food. I’m not Muslim, but I have Muslim friends whose hearts break the same way mine, or Emerson’s, or Courtney’s, or Kurt’s does. There is diversity in our cultural backgrounds, our daily customs and how we pray. But I’m realizing that God has caused our stories to intersect for reasons not yet known. Two things I’m sure of, however: I’m supposed to serve my new friends in ways that show Jesus in the midst of brokenness, and I’m grateful for the gift that God has given me in these seemingly impossible friendships.

ow many Northlanders does it take to serve Communion? Literally hundreds! Since we moved into our new building, many of you have been asking when we will return to passing the trays of bread and wine and/or juice during Communion. The first weekend in December, we want to do just that. But it takes many more volunteers to serve everyone at every service in this manner. If this is to be successful, we need your help!

When we take Communion, we remember together Christ’s sacrifice and celebrate our redemption and our identity as His church. We look forward to the fulfillment of His promise to share this cup with us in heaven. The bread and the cup are symbols of our belonging, symbols of Christ’s death and sacrifice. The sacraments are an integral part of our becoming process. There is a spiritual exchange, a renewing of relationship that takes place. We are refreshed and renewed as we remember, proclaim and participate. It is a mystery of the Spirit.

ACCESS MINISTRIES While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. These efforts are being led by Laura Lee Wright, Northland’s Access Ministries team leader (407-937-0549 or lauralee. wright@northlandchurch.net). We can best accommodate your needs if you arrive early for service. Parking: The front parking lot is reserved for those with special needs.

LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you. Details: Laura Young (407-949-7151) LifeHope Hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, at Northland’s Student Ministries and Care Center.

Special Needs Seating: People with wheelchairs, walkers or other special needs have designated seating areas throughout the sanctuary if needed. Lyrics for Visually Impaired: Printed lyrics are located at the Welcome Center. Sunday School: Classes for children through fifth grade with special needs is on Sundays at 11 a.m. Buddy Breaks: With Nathaniel’s Hope, we offer respite for parents of kids with special needs. Check the Belong section in the Northland News for details. Assistance for Those With Hearing Loss: Signed worship service is Sundays, 9 a.m. Sound amplification aids are available at the Welcome Center.
