300 People Find Their Smiles at Dental Outreach

V

news@mountdora

olunteers put smiles on nearly 300 faces last weekend, providing free dental care to lowincome, uninsured adults and children at the 2009 Central Florida Dental Outreach (CFDO). Since September 2005, CFDO and its partners have provided literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in free dental services to people in need — cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals and restorations. Most of CFDO’s volunteers are Northlanders, but many others who also love Central Florida and want to give back to the community join them. People began lining up as early as midnight on

the first day of this year’s event, held annually at Greenberg Dental in Orlando. According to Dr. Andrew Greenberg, the Northlander who coordinates this outreach, many Central Floridians can’t afford dental services. “Without affordable access to dental care, the working poor and elderly suffer the most,” he says. Thanks to Dr. Greenberg and his many volunteers, CFDO was able to provide a wide range of services to participants this year, from general dentistry and dental hygiene, to specialty care such as endodontics and oral surgery. Feeling inspired to serve in the community? Click on the “Serve” tab on Northland’s website (www.northlandchurch. net) to find opportunities near you.

The Sacrament of Baptism Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

I

n the power of the Holy Spirit, Peter invites his listeners to turn to Jesus as Savior and Lord. He tells us to repent and to be baptized. When we repent, we come down off the throne of our life and ask Jesus to take His rightful place as our Lord and King. When we get baptized, we outwardly display the forgiveness of sins we have received from God. My parents had me baptized when I was a baby. But as an adult, I became convicted to undergo this sacrament again. It wasn’t because I thought I needed to be baptized in order to be saved. Salvation comes when you repent and trust Jesus as Savior. Ephesians 2:8-9 reveals, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.” You cannot perform a work (including baptism) to be saved, and you cannot lose the salvation that Christ paid for on your behalf.

Gift Card Angel Tree

Indeed, it is a command of the Lord! I wanted to be baptized again by my own choice to express my commitment to make the Lord the center of my life. So on that cold November evening in Pastor Kevin Urichko’s cold swimming pool, my wife and I affirmed our faith in Jesus Christ through the sacrament of baptism. Are you thinking about being baptized? Perhaps you are a believer in Jesus but have never received the sacrament. Or maybe your story is like mine – you were baptized as an infant, and as an adult, you long to express your commitment to Christ in this manner. If God is stirring you to do so, follow Jesus’ command to be baptized! Each month we come together as the Northland congregation in Mount Dora for Gathering 242, a night of food, fellowship and worship. On Wednesday, November 18, we will also offer the sacrament of baptism. We have a pool behind the stage, and we will — Acts 2:38 (NIV) use it to baptize all who desire to express their commitment to Jesus in this way! The events start at 6 p.m. with a potluck dinner, followed by worship and baptisms at 7. You must go through baptismal counseling prior to receiving this sacrament, so give me a call if you want to talk about it. Follow the Spirit’s prompting and commit your life to Him!

“ Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ …”

Who, Me? JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

A

s we approach Thanksgiving and gear up for Christmas, this week’s sermon really hits home for me. See, I did not start off in the call to ministry at all. I was in the business world for 10 years and a nominal Christian at best. Then God turned my life upside down and inside out. As He continued to bring me to a place of complete surrender, it was not pastors and clergy who were there ministering to me; it was people just like you. It was a guy named John who asked to start meeting me for breakfast and praying with me. He was a normal guy with a job, a wife, kids, responsibilities and way too much to do, but he knew that God had called him to minister to me, though he didn’t even really know what all that meant. He was not seminary-trained, nor was he an expert on theological issues. He was simply available to the Holy Spirit’s using and to me. It changed everything, forever. God used ministers and clergy as well, in different ways, and the church absolutely played a pivotal role. However, it was not the building or degrees or titles that made the greatest impact; it was ordinary people. That is how it has always been. We should not be surprised. Adam was made from dirt – nothing all that special. Noah was a bit of a crazy man to his neighbors; Abraham, a wanderer; David, younger than many better suited men; and Jesus, a carpenter’s son born out of wedlock. This is the great mystery the Jewish people were never able to unravel. God does not need to do things the way we think they ought to be done. He does not need common sense or even logic to accomplish

THIS WEEK! 2nd- to 5th-Grade Bible Study His purposes. He tells us this very thing in one of my favorite verses, Isaiah 55:8: “‘My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord” (NIV). He uses the foolish things to confound the wise, and it seems like He really enjoys doing it (read Matthew 11:25, Luke 10:21, and 1 Corinthians chapters 1 and 3). Why? Because then there is no doubt who is doing what. It is Him, and He gets all the glory. That is good news for us and for them. He is doing the great work. In fact, it says He has been planning in advance for us to do this (Romans 8:28; Ephesians 2:10; Philippians 2:13). Well, then, carry on, all of you ministers of the Gospel, for each of us has received the power of the Holy Spirit, and we have all likewise received the same instruction: Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:7-8. We each may have different gifts, and some may be called to be ministers, clergy, teachers and so on, but these may not be the people God chooses to effect the lives of all the people around each and every one of you. He may want to use you, as He used a regular guy like John in my life! And it may very well change everything for them and for you! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Be a Blessing This Holiday Season Service Opportunities Abound as Thanksgiving and Christmas Approach BY vanessa puleo Local Projects and Partnerships

M

any of us have felt the pinch of the tight economy this year … but the holiday season is especially difficult for some families — namely those daily struggling to make ends meet — and Scripture commands us to meet their needs. How can you give to those who are less fortunate, even when your own budget is so tight? Volunteer! Northland needs hundreds of volunteers in order to meet the needs of several projects this holiday season. We will be cooking meals, building food baskets, delivering pies, baking cookies, collecting shoeboxes filled with gifts, serving the homeless and much more. Take your pick of projects:

Operation Christmas Child Donate a shoebox filled with gifts or volunteer to help with the shoebox collection and distribution efforts. Collections are November 16 through 23. Visit www.samaritan.org for information on creating your own shoebox, or e-mail Marie Strickland (occgirl@juno.com) to volunteer.

Pie Drive Help ensure hungry families receive a healthy and delicious Thanksgiving meal! Your pie donation, along with donations from other local churches, will be used by a local ministry to serve the elderly and families in need a Thanksgiving luncheon on November 25. Simply drop off a homemade or store-bought pie at Northland’s Student Ministries and Care Center (SMCC) in Longwood on Tuesday, November 24, anytime before 4 p.m.

Cookie Drive

Friday, December 11 is the Cookie Drive. Bake as many cookies as you wish and drop them off at Northland’s SMCC. If you have time, volunteers are also needed to repackage all the cookies into individual packs.

BUILD A BASKET — LOCAL SERVE DAY

Join us Saturday, December 12 at 7:45 a.m. at parking lot 3 for prayer and thanksgiving with Pastor Joel C. Hunter before getting down to the task of packaging food for families and individuals in need. You will be given the name of a family in need, for which you get to “build a basket.” All the supplies will be provided. You’ll just move down an assembly line, placing items like potatoes, canned vegetables, a turkey, brownies, cookies (from the Cookie Drive!), a Bible and a DVD about the story of Jesus into the basket. You also have the option of being part of a team that will deliver the baskets once they are assembled. Our ministry partners and Northland’s LifeHope ministry will have already contacted the basket recipients. Teams will deliver the baskets to their doors, ask for any prayer requests and invite them to a church service. Register for these family-friendly, fun and meaningful projects at www.northlandchurch.net/serve/. As always, if you have questions, contact me (vanessa. puleo@northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7156).

This year you have the opportunity to help a student go to Christmas Camp 2009. By sponsoring a seat, multiple seats or even a bus, you provide an opportunity for a student — or multiple students — to travel to SharpTop Cove Camp in Jasper, Georgia. Each year more than 150 high school students make the trek up to north Georgia to take a break from life and hear from God. Students make life-changing decisions over these four days, and many of them come back with a new or renewed passion to serve Jesus. We want to provide the opportunity to as many students as possible, and you can help!

The Good Shepherd John 20:21-23 Jesus said, “May peace be with you! The Father has sent Me. So now I am sending you.” He then breathed on them. He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit leads us as a good shepherd leads his sheep. A thousand years earlier, David said, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

A ‘Simple’ Plan: Reach the World for Christ By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations

T

his week, Northland launched a new online tool called DoingChurchSimply.com that will connect believers globally and help spread the message of Christ throughout the world in remote places like ... Allen, Texas. It was back in the late 90s when Dan and Sabrina Reidland traveled from Allen to Orlando for vacation. They had heard about Northland from some friends and decided to check it out for themselves. Northland was still meeting in The Rink at the time, and the church made a lasting impression upon the couple. Years later, having never set foot inside the church’s new facilities, the Reidland family took a step of faith, joining the 12,000 who call Northland their church home, including 2,000 people from 30 countries who regularly worship via the Web. “We just plug our laptop into our TV and have church together. It’s amazing. We've had visiting friends who have also worshiped with us,” Reidland explains. Having recently attended a house church conference with Dr. Dan Lacich, one of Northland’s pastors and executive director of sites development, the Reidlands are now preparing to take another step of faith—starting a “simple church” in their home. “I really appreciate the way DoingChurchSimply. com addresses the practical considerations of the simple church model,” Reidland says. “It’s giving us a real shot in the arm for investigating what a simple church arrangement might look like here.”

Keep It Simple

It probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that DoingChurchSimply.com is … well, simple. When you log on to the site, you are presented with 11 short videos, which cover everything from “setting up your home as a ministry outpost” to “sacraments and the church.” There are also links to blogs and other resources that provide both the “why?” and the “how?” behind setting up a “simple church.” Nathan Clark is Northland's director of digital innovations and one of the church’s online ministers. He explains, “We designed the new site simply, on purpose, to reinforce the philosophy that anyone can do this.” According to Dr. Lacich, the simple church model is very much along the lines of what most first-century Christians experienced: “They didn’t

have a sanctuary or temple, but homes or similar locations. They couldn't go down the street to First Baptist or First Presbyterian, they had to figure out how to be the church where they were.” The new site equips people to be the church, turning their homes and other locations into “mission outposts” to reach people for Christ. “We use the term ‘simple church’ instead of ‘house church’ because some people are gathering in places other than homes. It could be a local community room, a restaurant or office, even under a tree in the park. The point is you don't need a conventional church building in order to be and do the things that defined the church.”

This summer, Northland began partnering with Global Media Outreach (GMO), training congregants to become online missionaries out of their homes. The endeavor has been hugely successful. More than 200 Northlanders now spend time every day ministering online and have replied to thousands of questions posted by seekers. But there was a challenge ... “People have been coming to Christ all over the world, but many are in countries that don't allow for regular churches to exist,” says Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Northland’s senior pastor and one of GMO’s online missionaries. “We can now resource people to be the church where they are … that's the ultimate!” These simple churches will also multiply and make other churches, Pastor Hunter says. “I believe that we can cover the earth in the next 20 years,” he predicts. “Everyone will be able to hear the Gospel and not only have an invitation to Jesus Christ but, should He tarry, have the support that they need to grow in Christ and impact their communities for Him.” An unintended side benefit to this model of church planting—it’s a lot cheaper than traditional methods.

Before coming to Northland, Dr. Lacich planted churches using “western models” of traditional church planting. “It's an expensive, time-consuming, and more often than not, unsuccessful venture,” he says. “This is putting church planting in the hands of believers who sense a call from God to minister to the people around them. It’s something most believers can do that if they just have the tools and the permission to do so.” It’s also a very effective way to plant churches, Dr. Hunter notes: “Church that starts out simply has the greatest amount of fellowship and the greatest amount of encouragement in going toward what is the mutual mission cited by Christ—not only to be serving one another, but to spread the Gospel.” DoingChurchSimply.com will also equip people worshiping with Northland online to shift from worshiping in isolation to corporate worship. More than 4,000 miles away, in Malaga, Spain, Tibor and Daniella Tatrai will use the new site to help them reach their friends and neighbors for Christ. The Tatrai’s aren’t missionaries, just Christians with regular jobs and a heart for evangelism. The couple met in Orlando—she is Brazilian and he is Hungarian—and they attended Northland regularly. Having relocated to Spain in 2008, they now worship online with the church. “We are six hours ahead, so when we watch the 9 a.m. morning service, it’s 3 p.m. here,” Tibor says. “We are still able to connect to Northland, watch the service online. Even though we’re 4,000 miles apart, it feels like just a small step away.” Thankful for the resources DoingChurchSimply.com provides, the Tatrais are hoping to bring others into God’s family. “Unfortunately people are very closed minded here in Europe, so it is hard to break the ice,” Tibor explains. “However, we are sure God has placed us here to spread His word, and so He will help us.”

Getting Started

Despite the fact that Northland has simplified simple church so that just about anyone can do it, many people will still be understandably intimidated by the prospect. But according to Nathan Clark, it’s just like any other time you’d invite somebody to your house. “Most of us have been to a Super Bowl party before, where someone invites you to their home and you engage in this experience together. It's the same thing—you call a friend, you send an e-mail, maybe have a little pig cutout that says BBQ to follow. You tell them, ‘Hey, we actually do church at our house. We connect online, and it’s amazing … and we would love to have you come over.’” As believers begin to explore DoingChurchSimply.com, Dr. Lacich hopes they will begin to realize that God has put them where they are for a purpose: to be the salt and light so that others can come to know and love Jesus Christ: “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talk to Christians who moved into a new home and were depressed because none of their new neighbors follow Jesus. Or they start a new job and they’re surrounded by unbelievers. They're stunned when I tell them how wonderful I think that is!” He concludes, “If you live in an environment where the opportunities to show people the love of Jesus are endless, that’s a great place to be.”

Last Weekend’s Food Drive: Heavy Duty!

H

undreds of Northlanders, touched by the news about the bare shelves at food pantries across Central Florida, stepped up and participated in a church-wide food drive last weekend. Volunteers had their hands full as piles and piles of grocery bags were collected in the parking lots at all sites. Well, the results are in … donations totaled a WHOPPING 14,487 pounds of food, crushing last year’s total of 9,700 pounds! Our ministry partner trucks were literally overflowing as they pulled away. Thank you to everyone who participated! There are still many opportunities to serve people in need during the holidays. Check out page 6 to learn more.

GOVERNING ELDERS

BELIEVE 16

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

The Church: Everywhere, Every Day, Every One (1 Corinthians 16:19) Everyday Ministry: From Prayer to Pastoring Scripture focus:

John 20:21-23 (NASB)

Worship focus:

..................................................................................................................................................

........................................................................

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

Worship Christ today as the Good Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep.

Notes:

Summary prayer: ........................................................................

Dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Shepherd of Your people, thank You that we, Your servants, can gather here today. Help us to be faithful in the care and nurture of Your flock, and we pray that, following Your example and the teaching of Your holy life, we may by Your grace grow into Your likeness and into the fullness of Your righteousness.

NEXT WEEKEND: Pastor Adrian de Visser | Kithu Sevana, A Church Distributed, Sri Lanka | Challenges in the Mission Field. Past, Present and Future | Acts 1:8
