Rejoice … With Thanksgiving JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e are gathering together this week on Wednesday night to spend some time before Thanksgiving in thanksgiving, as the body of Christ! Why? We have truly experienced another incredible year as the Northland at Oviedo family passionately in pursuit of God. We saw the launch of our Missional May with Compassion International and the sending off of foreign missionaries, beach and pool baptisms, local adventurers sent on mission trips to Jamaica and Africa, the Luke Project and Women’s Tea, the launch of our Neighborhood Gatherings, multiple small groups formed and multiplied, lots of new faces, from congregants to babies, babies and more babies. Even in a time when there are a lot of struggles, hurt, loss and suffering, we all still have much to be thankful for, from our salvation because of His sacrifice, to our brothers and sisters in Christ who are here with us, “spurring one another on in love and good deeds.” Having lots to be thankful for is reason enough to take time out before we begin to eat too much food and fall asleep watching football, but Paul gives us a much, much better reason, the greatest reason of all. Read this for yourselves from Philippians 4:4-9: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to

God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Paul’s reason is more compelling than the list of things for which we have to be thankful. Even in a time when things are hard for many, these verses give us a clear picture of why we are to spend time in thanks to the Lord! In fact, it seems like Paul is actually saying something like, “There is all the more reason to be thankful when things are bad, because He is going to give you what you need to get through it.” Bring it all to Him, always – the good, the bad and the ugly – and then, guess what will happen? “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I want more of that. How about you? “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding” sounds pretty awesome. How do I get that? By bringing my whole life, all of it, to Him, in prayer and supplication (humble petition or request). Do not be anxious about anything (see Matthew 6:26). He promises He will be with us always, and although our situation and circumstances may not disappear, we will be strengthened to endure and glorify Him as we do. Join us at the Tuesday Thanksgiving service at FUMCO in Oviedo at 7 p.m. (details in the lobby) or at the Wednesday night prayer and thanksgiving, or serve others at the FUMCO Thanksgiving dinner (details in the lobby)! Breaking Free: Mission to Georgia March 6-13
T
hank you to all those who served this past weekend at the Build a Basket Local Serve Day. More than 250 baskets were assembled and delivered to families in need this Thanksgiving. Join us Saturday, December 12 at 7:45 a.m. at parking lot 3 for prayer with Pastor Joel C. Hunter before getting down to the task of packaging food for families and individuals in need. You will be given the name of a family in need, for which you get to “build a basket.” All the supplies will be provided. You’ll just move down an assembly line, placing items like potatoes, canned vegetables, a turkey, brownies, cookies (from the Cookie Drive!), a Bible and a DVD about the story of Jesus into the basket.

Adding to the Church – now. By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development
that Friday afternoon and told her I wanted to be saved and wanted to know how all this went down and what the process was. (I grew up in the Catholic church and assumed there had to be some kind of set date for such an act.) She informed me we could do it right there and grabbed my hands and prayed to the Lord almost verbatim the prayer Joel said at the end of worship on Monday. It’s the greatest and most difficult thing I have taken on in my life. The learning and excitement of new knowledge is like going back to college for me. The deciding factor that I wanted to be saved came after I attended Northland at the last service Communion was offered and the pastor stated something about only take this offering if you are a follower of God and had been saved by Him. I was so taken aback that I could not take on the blessing of Communion. When I heard Ulrika’s story at worship on Monday evening, I was in total shock because that was exactly how I had felt. So, I just wanted to thank you for helping me make the decision to take that step to be closer to God and learn about Him and become a Christian. It has been a lifechanging experience. Thank You with all my heart!

Preaching the message this weekend: Pastor Adrian de Visser
Adrian de Visser is the founding pastor of Kithu Sevana, A Church Distributed near Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. Kithu Sevana, which means “in the shadow of the cross,” is the hub for 10 partnering churches and more than 60 ministries, with several thousand members, most first-generation followers of Christ, in many locations across the country. Adrian and his wife, Ophelia, are actively engaged in discipleship training with a new generation of church planters that seek to start 5,000 churches in Sri Lanka in the next 10 years. The de Vissers also are caring for orphans and widows in a holistic ministry both at their church and their camp that is outside of Colombo. Adrian is a pioneer thinker related to Asian theology and ministering to the poor of Asia. Prior to his visionary leadership as senior pastor, Adrian was on the staff of Youth for Christ, where he was saved as a teenager. Adrian is also active with Asian Access as vice president of development and the Lausanne movement as director of Thilini, Prashan, Adrian and Ophelia de Visser. evangelism for Southern Asia. Adrian completed his Master of Divinity at Columbia International University. He has written the first book published in the Sinhalese language on healing from emotional pain. Ophelia manages many of the widow and orphan ministries in Sri Lanka. She and Adrian have two children. Prashan, their oldest, recently graduated from Gordon College in Massachusetts. Prashan, who recently moved back to Sri Lanka, is seeking to build a reconciliation movement across Sri Lanka starting with young people from all backgrounds to unify the country. Thilini, their second child, just started her sophomore year at Biola University in California.
