NORTHLAND, A CHURCH DISTRIBUTED
The fact that we are allowed to live as real human beings and to love the real person beside us is founded solely on the incarnation of God, on the unfathomable love of God for humankind.

Distributing Resources to People in Need
From Longwood to Northern Africa and beyond ... your tithes and offerings are being used locally and globally to bring others into God’s family. By Marc Mcmurrin Executive Director of Operations
your tithes and offerings go to local and global communities that feed the hungry, protect the innocent, heal the sick and distribute the church. You support 68 missionaries, 35 mission organizations, such as Campus Crusade for Christ and International Justice Mission, and 20 church partners around the world. Since you may never meet these individuals face to face, I want to tell you how your prayers are being answered and how your tithes and offerings are being used to serve people worldwide in the name of Christ. Northland. His name is Brother Philip. Actually, that’s not his real name. I can’t tell you his real name because he works in a part of the world where the Gospel is not openly preached. Brother Philip opened the Ambassador’s Missionary Training School, in one of the restricted countries in North Africa, to equip church planters, with a special focus on unreached people groups – people who have no churches among them and no active witness for the Gospel. The first generation of students will graduate December 17 and will head out to the field to plant house churches and to do other kinds of outreach in Northern Africa. In addition, Brother Philip’s two orphanages provide food and housing for 43 boys and girls who have been rescued from poverty and slavery and are now cared for and taught about Jesus Christ. His two medical clinics also see 30 to 40 patients every day, opening the door to many opportunities to share the Good News. “At the medical clinic working in a Muslim area, you can share the Gospel with two or three people every day out of that number of patients,” Brother Philip says. “There’s an openness like never before.” (Continued on page 14.)

The Ark and Immanuel, “God With Us” JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
T
he Ark of the Covenant was a pretty big deal. Sometimes we think of this in terms of a lost item that Indiana Jones was looking for, or we imagine this ornate object we have seen pictures of in a book. Although Indie was searching for it, and we can see representations of it, we are merely seeing the object, and that was secondary to what it represented. Its physical being was secondary to its overall purpose. It was what housed the stones of the covenant, but it was so much more than that. It was the place that the High Priest alone would go to offer sacrifice once a year, at Yom Kippur, for the sin of the people, but it was even more than that. It was the place where the God of the universe chose to come and be present with His people. Second Samuel 6:2 and Psalm 99:1 say that it was between the winged cherubim that He made His presence real for His people. And although He cannot be contained in a building or place, He chose to make this place special. He chose to come there and bless them; He chose to come and be with them. That is what we are preparing for at Christmastime – the miracle of an infinite God who chose to set aside his infiniteness so He could dwell in a specific place, this time a human body, so He could be with His people, so He could bless them, so He could save them. That is a pretty big deal. It was then; it is now. That was the declaration of the angels at Christ’s birth, prophesied in Isaiah 7:14 and recounted in Matthew 1:21-23: “‘She
will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ – which means, ‘God with us’” (NIV). Take some time this Advent season to prepare your hearts to remember what He did for us – leave everything heavenly behind and take on the form of a servant, obedient even to death, it says in Philippians 2:8. I often think the harder part must have been coming here at all, whether it was to the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant or to the manger in Bethlehem; it was a sacrifice before ever suffering at the cross. He chose to come and be with us so we could be with Him not just in eternity, but here in the unfolding rescue story of the redemption of all of creation! Merry Christmas! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. —2 Peter 1:2-3 (NIV)

he goal was to serve 1,100 meals to those who needed them for Thanksgiving, and that goal was met. Many people from our West Oaks congregation, as well as from the Longwood site, came out and delivered food to those in need. As Maxine Hammerstein said last weekend after our service, “I went to be a blessing and was blessed myself.” As Max and her husband, John, went into one of the homes, they were blessed by a teenager who just wanted them to know she reads her Bible every day. Marilee Foreman also talked about the language barrier, as she and her husband, Todd, with their two daughters, Katie and Rachel, delivered food in Winter Garden. But she went on to say, “There is no language barrier when you’re loving and caring for someone else.”

Gift Trees in the Foyer! BY SARAH MATTINGLY Northland Executive Assistant Service
F
rom December 5 to 14, two gift trees will be set up in the foyer to help the Northland congregation meet the needs of those in our communities who are struggling financially this Christmas. Representatives from Christian HELP and The Sharing Center (both local partners of Northland) will be in the foyer during all worship services this weekend and next to talk more about how you can help! Christian HELP — Dove Tree The Dove Tree program helps our neighbors in the community who are experiencing difficult times due to job loss as well as other circumstances, such as poor health, by providing gifts for their children at Christmastime. Simply take a dove card off the tree, purchase the gift listed on the card, and place it in Christian HELP’s collection box, next to the tree in the foyer. Christian HELP will collect those gifts and deliver them to the families who registered for Christmas assistance. Details about Christian HELP: www.christian help.org
The Sharing Center — Children’s Christmas The Children’s Christmas program focuses on providing gift cards for parents and guardians that are financially struggling so that they can use them to purchase needed shoes and socks in the right size for their children. Simply purchase gift cards to an affordable shoe store of your choice (such as Payless or Rack Room Shoes), bring them to Northland, and place them in The Sharing Center’s collection box, next to the tree in the foyer. The deadline for donating the gift cards is December 14. Details about The Sharing Center: www. thesharing center.org
Share Christ This Christmas
T
his Christmas season, you have an easy and effective opportunity to share Jesus with others in a way that will touch their hearts! What if you had a DVD that shared the life of Christ in 16 languages, so you could share it with a neighbor regardless of his or her native tongue? We currently have 500 copies of The Jesus Film that we would like for you to share with your friends and neighbors that do not know Christ. This film is produced in 16 languages, all on one disc. To complement the DVD, we also have 500 copies of Northland’s Christmas worship album, Where God Wants to Be, that we are pairing with The Jesus Film as a special gift! Stop by the Welcome Center behind the Welcome Desk after any worship service and pick up the complimentary DVD and CD, and share them with
someone who is in need of hearing the Good News this Christmas. Consider writing a personal note or baking cookies to deliver with this great gift! Knock on a neighbor’s door, or give this gift to someone at Jesus with followers in The Jesus Film. work. Take this time to extend the life of Christ in a meaningful and simple way so that God can touch people’s hearts through you!

How God Moves Through His People BY vanessa puleo Local Projects and Partnerships
T
hanksgiving Day may be over, but I am still giving thanks for all of you amazing, giving, big-hearted, faithful followers of Christ. I received this e-mail the other day, and I just have to share it with you. It’s a reminder of why we follow this amazing King of ours. Last Wednesday, on the day before Thanksgiving, I was at the grocery store, and I struck up a conversation with one of the ladies who work there. We talked about how we were so grateful for what we had because there were so many who had so little. I mentioned that my church had served a Thanksgiving meal the past Monday night to a large number of homeless families and how neat it was that several of the children had joined us in Children’s Church that night. She asked me where I attended church, and when I told her it was Northland, she told me how one of her coworkers had unexpectedly been provided a basket of food for her family’s Thanksgiving meal. She said her coworker did not know how they knew they had no money for the holiday meal or who had given Northland her name, but that it was delivered to their home, and the only thing that was asked of them was to allow the person who delivered it to pray with them. They were so amazed that a church would do so much for so little in return. The lady I was talking with got a little teary and said it had touched her so much when she heard about it, and she was so glad to meet someone from that church so she could tell that person what a difference Northland had made in her coworker’s life. That was her first impression of our church, and it really touched her and her coworkers. It made me so proud to be a part of a serving family of believers. Blessings, Mary Lee Carter

is a fun game of football that offers students an easy way to invite friends into a nonthreatening environment. This year the seniors and freshmen teamed up to take on the juniors and sophomores. It was a fight to the end, with the senior/freshman team winning the game. Meanwhile at the bake-off, there were some very tempting treats, including Praline Pumpkin and Touchdown Truffles. The bake-off winning dessert was titled Jack: King of the Pumpkin Patch. The canned goods collection brought in more than 300 nonperishable food items for LifeHope. One person brought in an amazing 51 items. This spring, Student Ministries will be introducing the Kickball Classic, which will be a great time for students to invite friends to get involved. If you have a student (middle or high school) who is not yet involved in Student Ministries, check out the rest of the articles on this page to find ways of plugging in your students.

Giving Treasures Exodus 25:21-22; Matthew 2:10-11 God told Moses to make a golden box to hold special treasures for God’s people. The box was called the Ark of the Covenant. Two goldenwinged creatures called cherubim were carved and placed on the box cover. God said, “Place the cover on top of the box. I will give you the tablets of the covenant – the Ten Commandments. Keep them in the golden box. I will meet with you above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the Ark.” Hundreds of years later, God came to meet with us in a different way. He came as baby Jesus. When the wise men saw Him with His mother, Mary, they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and gave Him gold, incense and myrrh.
A perfume from the Mmm, wise men. smells nice!

The History of St. Nicholas By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development
I
t is one of those questions that all parents expect, but hope won’t come this Christmas. With any answer to the question, there is a lot to lose. At risk is a child’s confidence in his parents’ honest answers, but also the childlike imagination and faith in goodness that want to hold on to such tales. Is there an answer that preserves all the best of such childish wonder? When asked if there is a Santa Claus, one possible answer is to say that Santa Claus is a legend based on the true life and generous acts of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was born in AD 270 in Turkey. During his life, St. Nicholas dedicated himself to serving God, caring for the sick and the poor, and performing acts of charity. He developed a tremendous following during and after his death.
ADVENTRESOURCES
In the Catholic churches of Russia, he is still considered one of the favorite saints. December 6 is celebrated as St. Nicholas Day in many countries, including Belgium, Greece and Germany. “The first Europeans to the New World honored St. Nicholas in the form of cathedrals and ports; however, the steadfast tradition of St. Nick materializing into the American Santa Claus began with New Yorkers paying tribute to their Dutch roots in 1804. John Pintard, founder of the New York Historical Society, credited St. Nicholas as the patron saint over the society and city. Four years later on St. Nicholas Day, Washington Irving published a fictional satire referencing the jolly character St. Nicholas. Since that time, images and descriptions of his life evolved into the imaginary children’s icon.” (catholic-saints.com) Listening to legends like Santa Claus can be fun, but legends also serve a useful purpose in society. They promote the things that matter to us. The legend of Santa Claus began to instill the value of generosity and faith in goodness in children. So see Santa Claus as a legend. But learn from the real life of St. Nicholas how much influence a generous life can have. Some people, in the spirit of St. Nicholas, still perform generous acts at Christmastime. Will you?

Family Advent-ure Make this a meaningful Advent season by celebrating in new ways with your family. Make an Advent wreath (together!) for your home. 1. Gather evergreen branches, or use colored paper and cut out paper leaves. 2. Arrange the greenery in a circle on a table. 3. Place four candles in candleholders on the circle, and one in the center. 4. Choose a day and time for your family Advent candle lighting. Dinner is a great time. 5. Check this page each week for suggested Advent readings, songs, prayers and family discussion starters.
Week 2
1. Choose a time when your family can gather. Dinner makes a great time. 2. Light the second Advent candle. 3. This candle represents “joy,” the joy of Christ to the world. 4. Read together Luke 1:26-38, or read the story of the angel’s visit to Mary from your favorite Bible storybook. 5. Talk about the things that give you joy at Christmastime. 6. Think of some things you could do as a family to bring joy to others. 7. Pray together, thanking Jesus for the joy He gives us.

Distributing Resources (Continued from page 4.) Again, I tell you this because while you will probably never meet Brother Philip face to face, you are a silent partner in the work that God is doing in that part of the world. There’s so much more I could tell you about ... inmates finding Christ through Northland’s jail and prison ministry and live prison webcast, people with hurts and addictions gathering every Friday night at the church’s new Celebrate Recovery ministry, the new Doing Church, Simply website that is helping people to start house churches around the globe ... the list goes on and on, and you are a part of it all! THANK YOU for your financial commitment through your tithes and offerings this year, giving as an act of worship, recognizing that He is the One who provides for us. As I said, this has been a difficult year financially for the church, as I am sure it has People with hurts, habits and hangups can now find help been for your family. The current economy has at Celebrate Recovery at Northland. caused many individuals and organizations to make difficult decisions, and Northland is no exception. The elders have significantly reduced our expenses in light of our current financial situation to minimize the current deficit and decrease our budget for next year. As we seek God about these challenges, He will continue to mold us to fulfill His purposes. God has called Northland to reach the lost, bring believers to maturity in Christ, and serve those in need. It is amazing to know that God is using our congregation, staff and partners in this way to impact our local and global communities! We are prayerful that the Lord will bring the resources required, and we are looking to you (according to what you are able) to join the rest of the congregation in helping to meet the need. There is a passage in the Gospel of Matthew that reveals a lot about who we are as individuals, as it first talks about our treasure and then our heart.
“ But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will – Matthew 6:20-21 (NIV) be also.” As we grow in maturity in Christ, we understand that our heart follows where we invest our resources. Whom do we really live for? What is important to us? Who truly provides? Let us give back to the One who will meet our every need, as we hold fast to the purpose He has given us as individuals and as a body here at Northland. Last year Northland became a member of the ECFA (Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability) to demonstrate our commitment to transparency and sound financial stewardship of the resources God provides through you. We take God’s money very seriously and are driven to make sure every penny fulfills the purposes God has established for His ministry. It is humbling to know that God does not need us to do His will, but He chooses to use us, so we can experience the JOY of being a part of His great work. All gifts come from above, and we know that He will meet our every need as we hold fast to the purpose He has given us as individuals and as a body here at Northland. Thank you for taking the time to pray about what you can do to help the church financially during this difficult time to finish the year strong.

Preaching the message this weekend: Vernon Rainwater, Pastor
“Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms. We have a reason for being together. It is to worship God for who He is and what He has done.” — Pastor Vernon Pastor Vernon Rainwater leads Northland in worship when we gather together for church “in these rooms.” A native of Wilmore, Kentucky, Vernon has been a part of the worship leadership at Northland for 20 years. While distributed ministry and worship are the two primary areas of his focus, his desire is to motivate each generation to live a life of worship everywhere, every day. Vernon has been a musician since he was 17, but he has worked in social work, law enforcement and served in the military as well. With a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky, he also holds graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky in social work and from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in biblical studies. Vernon and his wife, Connie, have two daughters: Claire and Mandy. Mandy and her husband, Chad Turnbull, live in Casselberry, Florida, and have blessed the Rainwaters with three grandchildren. Claire and her husband, Aaron Reed, live in New York City, where Claire attends Columbia University. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT PASTOR VERNON, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
The Gift of Presence — Advent Week 2 God in a Box? Scripture focus:
Exodus 25:21-22; Matthew 2:10-11 (ESV)
Worship focus:
..................................................................................................................................................
........................................................................
Exodus 25:21-22
Worship Christ today as the everlasting Father, Lord of heaven and earth.
And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel. Matthew 2:10-11
When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Summary prayer: ........................................................................
Heavenly Father, we worship You during this Advent season as the everlasting Father. Since ancient times, no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who act on behalf of those who wait for You. We wait for You … as we celebrate the Word that became flesh. We wait for You … as Your Kingdom comes on earth as it is in Heaven. We wait for you … for Your final return, when we will be with You in Heaven forever. Until then, expand our vision of Your nature, expand our understanding of Your grace, and let us know the power of Your presence. Don’t let us remember You as a baby in a manger. Reveal Yourself again to us, as You act on our behalf and we act on Yours, everywhere, every day.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | THE GIFT OF PRESENCE — ADVENT week 3 | A Tent of Meeting; A House of Greeting | Exodus 33:7-9; Luke 1:26-30
