The Best Gift You Can Give Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister
W
hat is the best gift you have ever given at Christmas? I am sure it was well-thoughtout and made a tremendous impact on the receiver. God designed us to be givers, and great pleasure comes when we give of our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of others. What is the greatest gift you can give this Christmas? You can give of yourself! The psalmist was inspired to write these words: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:13-14, NIV). Was this Scripture only for David? Did David write this because he was a really holy, perfect guy? The answers are no and no! These verses were inspired by the Holy Spirit with you and me in mind, too! And the “fearfully and wonderfully made” part comes not because we have it all together, but because He has set His affection upon us. Moses spoke to the Israelites: “Yet the Lord set his affection on your forefathers and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations, as it is today” (Deuteronomy 10:15, NIV). Wow! If God cherishes us so much, we must really have something to offer others – especially in your Northland at Mount Dora church family! What keeps you from moving toward your brothers and sisters in Christ? Do you feel too shy? Too busy? Too afraid to be known? If you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” then you have something to
give. As a matter of fact, you have something that others in your church need! The Holy Spirit has invested all of us with spiritual gifts. Each gift (and talent and passion) is a reflection of the perfect nature of God, residing in you. Mercy, healing, leadership, administration, discernment, service … the list goes on and on. (I encourage you to review the Scriptures that mention spiritual gifts, including Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 and 1 Peter 4). If God has manifested Himself in you by giving you a gift, you should use it to bless others! There are so many places you can plug in at Northland at Mount Dora. A partial list is located on this page. To help, I will be teaching a four-week Bible study on spiritual gifts. It is titled The Gifts That God Gives and will be held on Wednesday evenings at the Mount Dora worship site. Here are the details:

Merry Christmas to You … and to Your Congregation JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
The Gospel message is very simple. John 3:16 states it simply as, “Whoever believes in him shall not perish” (NIV), and in most of Romans and Hebrews, and more specifically in Ephesians 2:8-9, we are told that it is by grace through faith that we are saved, so none of us may boast. Jesus Christ did it all! We must believe, and then He will even do the work of transforming us into the likeness of Himself (2 Corinthians hat we see and hear today and in most 3:18). Now, we have a role in this, but it is responsive. sermons from Pastor Joel, what is at the Simple, but I hear and experience myself often how difficult heart of Northland’s very DNA and is the this really is. Why? essence of the Christmas story itself, is a very simple Let’s look at the Christmas story to see if we can get some message. But let me just say that too often people clarity. The plan was, well, simple: rescue all of creation from associate simple with easy, and the truth is they the effects of sin. It was declared as such in Genesis 3:15. See, have very little to do with each other. A bat hitting a it is that far back where the simple became complicated. Read ball is a simple concept, but Genesis 1 and 2, and For it is by grace you have been saved, it is far from easy. Another see how simple it really example of simple, but not was. Then read Genesis through faith – and this not from easy, would be reading a 3, and you can watch yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by speech to a large group of the easy disappear works, so that no one can boast. people. Oftentimes it is and be replaced with – Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) the surrounding context or complication, difficulty circumstances that make something simple, and and toil, as it says in Genesis 3:17). This is where the make it not easy at all, complicated and nearly juxtaposing of simple and easy originated. This is why we see impossible. The heart of Northland — the Christmas the simplicity of the Gospel and Pastor Joel’s sermon, but story and the Gospel itself — is just like that, simple, feel the challenge of living it out day by day, because things but not necessarily always easy. are not as they should be, as they were designed to be! Northland is, by definition, a church distributed. But God has been in the redemption business since that We have spent a long time listening to Pastor Hunter very time too. See, for God, it could have been simple, a snap share with us the simplicity of the reality that of the “fingers,” right? He spoke it into being; He could have we are the church; it’s not a building or a place, corrected it just as easily. It could have been simple, but He but God’s people. We have been reminded and chose to unfold that plan in a way that seems so complicated, encouraged to go and “be the church, everywhere, so not easy. He chose a people through whom He would every day.” My favorite line from Dr. Hunter is demonstrate to the world who He was and what He was doing. simply, “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, But it kept getting knotty. Now, I don’t mean because He where you are right now!” These are all simple, but couldn’t do it simply or was surprised or did not see all that I hear from congregants time and time again that coming. I mean He, in His divine wisdom, allowed it to appear this is not easy. Why? to us as not so simple, not so easily done. He was building

dependence into us. He was making us know we needed a Savior! A baby? That is the simple answer to the complicated problem? Why? That does not seem simple or easy. But God has been doing something else since the dawn of creation; it is His essence, His being, His purpose. First John 4:8 and 16 tell us what that is, simply: God is love! See, love is simple, yet so complicated. It is simple, but not easy. It is simple. He is love! And someday, forever the simple and the easy will be one again, and you and I have been invited, and it all began here, in a manger, with a baby. read an article in the West Orange Times, written by Chris Silveira, about the Service Project at House Blend Café on Thanksgiving Day. Here is a portion of the article that I thought would be great to share: On Thanksgiving Day last week, lines began to form in the afternoon at two different locations less than a mile apart from each other in Ocoee. One line was at the Best Buy on West Colonial Drive, where people — many who had earlier in the day enjoyed a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal with their family — gathered with lawn chairs, mattresses and blankets, ready to camp out for the night in hopes of being one of the first to enter the store on Black Friday to get a deal on a laptop computer or bigscreen HDTV. The other line was at the House Blend Café, also on West Colonial, where a group of homeless men and women were treated to showers, haircuts, clothing and a candlelight turkey dinner before heading back to their campsites in the woods surrounding Ocoee and Winter Garden. “We had a guy here for dinner tonight who was blown away that we actually had real silverware and
china to serve the meal on,” said Josh Taylor, general manager of House Blend. “We wanted to do everything we could to make this a really special evening, to look somebody in the eyes and say, ‘You matter.’ We wanted to make it a special day for them.” While the number of volunteers serving meals and handing out clothes outnumbered those most in need, the positive impact of the day reverberated with both groups. If you would like to read the entire article, you can go to: http://wotimes.com/articles/2009/12/01/news/top_ stories/news01.prt. The amazing things about this event were the number of volunteers that showed up and served as well as the amount of clothing and other donations that blessed those in need. Some people weren’t even needed because they had too many volunteers. Thank you for your willingness and heart to serve. This is a great problem to have during a time when many of the needs are so great. I say this all the time, but I truly believe we have some of the most amazing followers of Christ I have ever known. When there has been a need, many of you in our West Oaks community have served and given in such a sacrificial way that it gives a clear picture of Jesus’ words in John 14:12 when He said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father” (NIV). As long as we continue to love Christ with all that is in us, and love others as we love ourselves (the two greatest commandments), we will be a part of the Kingdom of God
here as it is in heaven. Thank you for loving and serving our King in such a powerful way. As a reminder, please stick around after the service today (at West Oaks) for a brunch to celebrate Christmas together and also to celebrate with Alan and Tywonn their first year in Africa. Everyone is invited to stay, so please join us! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Serving Others: A Lifestyle, not a Project BY vanessa puleo Local Projects and Partnerships
A
t times I wonder if the word “project” makes us think that serving others is a one-time event or a “task” to check off the to-do list for the week. Oftentimes when I am preparing a Local Serve Day or many of our activities outside the walls of the church, I sit and really think about what God would want the focus to be. He is so clear that we are to serve. And I often am reminded that the word “project” is rarely, if ever, used in that sentence. Here you will find testimonials from others throughout the year on how serving others has become a part of their lives, and as this season is upon us, let’s consider the many ways we can make serving others part of our lifestyle, and not simply a project! “We are so blessed to have been given so many opportunities to serve the Lord! Going out to homes, churches, schools or wherever needed has been so incredibly rewarding. Northland gives us an endless variety to choose from. Some serve projects can include the kids, which has taught them how good it feels when you serve Christ by offering your time and talents to others in need. Preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald House or serving ice cream to families at Give Kids the World has been a couple of the kids’ favorites. In every one of the projects we have worked on, I can say without question that we are the ones who come out feeling blessed. God is amazing! Thank you, Northland, for extending these opportunities to serve!” — Rick and Mindy Geer
“When Northland started getting very involved in local serving projects, my family was excited because now it was so easy to be a part of a group serving others. We had been very involved inside the church walls, but didn’t know how to get involved in larger projects in the community. It’s not always easy to serve others. There are times when it truly feels joyful and times when it is tough to get going to a project. We are teaching our daughters that the Lord wants to see that our hearts are in the right place, and sometimes that means serving even when we are tired or busy. Our priorities have changed in what we decide to do as a family. Today, looking for ways to incorporate serving the Lord is not what we do, but who we are. Northland has been instrumental in this process because of the importance it has placed on serving, teaching us to do the same. The Lord is still teaching our family things about ourselves and about Him by weaving serving opportunities into the fabric of our lives.” — Rick, Lucee, Ciera and Ryanna Price “I love serving through Northland! There are so many different opportunities to further the Kingdom! This past year, I served on the cooking team at Southwind when it was made wheelchair-accessible, and I got to deliver Thanksgiving baskets to families. I can feel God’s smile when He uses me to bless others.” — Susie Davis “‘You get more than you give,’ as the saying goes … and how true it has been! My personal experience with Helping Hands and being a member of the Serve Team has grown me personally and spiritually. Seeing the community changing and transforming is great, and all of the folks that we are serving are so appreciative, it makes me want to do more!” — Joanne Puleo

Answer: Christ the Savior is born.
Christ the Savior is Born Isaiah 9:6; Luke 2:6-7, 11 Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, Isaiah told us about God’s promise to give us His own Son to be our Savior. He would come to us as a baby. Nine months before Jesus was born, the angel Gabriel told Mary she would be the mother of this promised Savior. Gabriel told Mary to name the baby Jesus. When the time came for Jesus to be born, Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem. Mary gave birth to a baby boy. She wrapped Him in large strips of cloth. Then she placed Him in a manger. There was no room for them in the inn. Mary and Joseph named the baby Jesus, just as the angel had told them. God came to be with us and to save us through His Son, Jesus – just as He had promised!
Thanks!
Draw a picture of baby Jesus lying in the manger as Mary and Joseph watch over Him.

A Season of Peace
January 10 through February 14 9 a.m. Sundays, Northland at Longwood, room 4209
T
his time of year, people around the world seem to be especially mindful of peace, but knowing how to approach conflict is difficult for all of us. Learning and applying the biblical principles of relationship not only make the process less stressful, but also give real meaning and purpose to those relationships. Here is one young woman’s story: While taking a weekly Bible study on biblical peacemaking, Kristen had a major “blowout” with one of her best friends. As a result, they weren’t talking. Hurtful things had been said, wrong assumptions were made, and there was serious damage to their relationship. After a painful and anxious couple of weeks, Kristen approached me and asked about “taking the log out” when the other side was really at fault. I told her that her part (confessing her own contributions to the conflict) was not conditioned in Scripture by the other side going first. We reviewed Matthew 7:1-5 and prayed about how to approach her friend.
The next week, Kristen came to the Bible study with a big grin on her face. “I did it,” she exclaimed. “I called my friend, and we met for a long drive, and then spent a couple of hours in her driveway, just talking. I told her how much I appreciated our long-term friendship and wanted to work it out. I told her I made some serious, mean-hearted comments, and that I was sorry for the damage it caused. Cindy responded with, “You weren’t the only one; I made some serious mistakes, too. Can you forgive me, as well?” They were quickly reconciled, rather than “winning” the battle. Two years later, Kristen was married, and one evening when we had a few moments to reflect on all the changes in her life, she thanked me for the Bible study on peacemaking. It had set the standard for how she and her husband handled their marital differences, and they had learned to honor God in how they handled conflict. Northland’s Peace Seeker Ministry team is offering a newly revised six-week class beginning January 10 at 9 a.m. Come and learn to approach others in a spirit of reconciliation, and steward conflict in a way that honors God and brings peace!
New Bible Studies for 2010 Gospel of Mark Bible Study
Sundays, beginning January 10 9 a.m., Northland at Longwood, rooms 4213-15 The message of the Gospel of Mark is to present Christ as a Servant. It focuses on the ministry years of Christ, beginning with His baptism. It may have been written in response to the fire that destroyed Rome in 64 AD. The Emperor Nero blamed that fire on the Christians, severe persecution ensued, and it was to these believers that Mark writes. He calls on his readers to take on the nature of Christ as they endure sufferings while continuing to be faithful servants. Come and join this yearlong study, taught by Pastor Dan Lacich. answers to prayer
Sundays, beginning January 10 11 a.m., Northland at Longwood, room 4204 Do you want answers to prayer? Don’t miss the next session of this in-depth prayer study using the classic book by George Mueller. Mueller lived in England in the 1800s and is famous for the
orphanages he established. He determined from the beginning to trust in God alone to provide for every need and never tell a single person. This book is George Mueller’s written journal, in which he recorded his prayers, his thoughts and details of his faith journey. We will be using a new, updated, paraphrased version of the book. You will receive free weekly chapters; you do not need to purchase a book. This book will change your life! You will never again be able to pray as before. You will be challenged; you will challenge others. Class facilitators: Mickey and Cindy Mallin. Details: Mickey or Cindy (407-322-6101)
Ephesians
Sundays, starting January 10 10:45 a.m., Northland at Longwood, rooms 4213-15 The book of Ephesians, one of the letters written by the apostle Paul from prison, is unique among Paul’s letters. It appears to have been written to a group of predominantly Gentile churches in what is now western Turkey – quite possibly John’s “seven churches” (Revelation 1:1). Come and study the book, as the early believers did, to learn God’s purpose and plan for the body of Christ. Details: John and Carolyn Jones (407-831-5822)

Winter session: January 6 to 27 This midweek experience offers in-depth, interactive classes for adults and a fun, exciting learning environment for children called Now.Wow! First- through third-graders will take a deeper look at what they’ve been learning during weekend worship in Children’s Church. Because this age group learns best through repetition, they will revisit the weekly Bible story, but with new worship songs, interactive games, and crafts that will bring the stories to life. Fourth- and fifth-graders will engage in a hunt to discover God’s Truth. As a team, they’ll put on their detective hats, decode secret messages, solve puzzles and play games that will lead them straight to the Truth! (Individual workbooks for the children will be available for a suggested donation of $8.) Adult courses available this session:
Bible Old Testament Survey —
Rooms 4213-15, Longwood site. Taught by Sean Cooper. Sean is a minister of Northland in the areas of service and equipping. If you have taken his Bible Basics course, this is the perfect follow-up. What could events that happened thousands of years ago to people from completely different continents and cultures possibly have to say to you? This course will give an overview of the contents, teaching and message of the Old Testament.
Christian Living
The Crucible of Work — Rooms 4206-7, Longwood site. Taught by Dr. Sanford Shugart. Dr. Shugart is the president of Valencia Community College and a member of the Northland family. This class will be based on Dr. Shugart’s recent book by the same name. Does your work shape you, or do you shape your work? Come and get a preview of his thoughts on making your work your worship.
Theology The Doctrine of Christ — Sanctuary, Longwood site. Taught by Dr. Reggie Kidd. Dr. Kidd is a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary. He and his family have been a part of the Northland family for 20 years. He frequently serves as the online pastor during weekend worship services. What we believe about Jesus Christ is what sets Christianity apart from all other religions. What does the Bible teach about Him? Was He fully God? Was He fully human? What could that all possibly mean?
• Child care is available for children age 5 and under. • Get more information and access class archives at now.northlandchurch.net.
Family Advent-ure
Make this a meaningful Advent season by celebrating in new ways with your family. Make an Advent wreath (together!) for your home.
Week 4
Christmas Eve
1. Choose a time when your family can gather. Dinner makes a great time. 2. Light the fourth Advent candle. 3. This candle represents “peace,” the peace of Christ, who is the Prince of Peace. In scripture, peace does not mean merely the absence of conflict, but would best be defined as bringing all things to completion. 4. Read together Luke 2:8-12, or read the story of the angel’s visit to the shepherds from your favorite Bible storybook. 5. Talk about the ways that Christ has brought peace into your lives. 6. Think of some things you could do as a family to bring peace to those around you. 7. Pray together, thanking Jesus for the peace He brings. Ask for His help as you become peacemakers.
1. Choose a time when your family can gather around the Advent wreath. 2. Light the fifth and last Advent candle. 3. This candle represents Christ, the Light of the world. 4. Read together Luke 2:13-20 and John 1:1-14, or read the story of the shepherds visit to the manger from your favorite Bible storybook. 5. Talk about the ways that Christ has brought His light into your lives. 6. Think of some things you could do as a family to bring that light to those around you, even in your neighborhood this Christmas. 7. Pray together, thanking Jesus for coming as our Savior.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
The Gift of Presence — Advent Week 4 Personal Congregations Scripture focus:
Exodus 4:10, 14-15; Luke 1:39-45 (NASB)
..................................................................................................................................................
Worship focus: ........................................................................
Worship Christ today as the Prince of Peace.
Exodus 4:10
Then Moses said to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” Exodus 4:14-15
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, “Is there not your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. “You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth; and I, even I, will be with your mouth and his mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do. Luke 1:39-45
Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! “And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me? “For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.” The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.”
Summary prayer: ........................................................................
Heavenly Father, we worship You during this Advent season as the Prince of Peace. Since ancient times, no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for You. We wait for You … as we celebrate the Word that became flesh. We wait for You … as Your Kingdom comes on earth as it is in Heaven. We wait for you … for Your final return, when we will be with You in Heaven forever. Until then, expand our vision of Your nature, expand our understanding of Your grace, and let us know the power of Your presence. Don’t let us remember You as a baby in a manger. Reveal Yourself again to us, as You act on our behalf and we act on Yours, everywhere, every day.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter
