Northlander Takes Former Inmates Off the Grid, Puts Them on the Path to Rehabilitation “A lot of these guys ... they’re scared. They don’t want to be in a place where they have access to drugs and alcohol. Living off the grid gives them a chance to get their lives together and learn new skills before they rejoin society.” At Omega Ranch, affectionately dubbed “Stan’s Ranch” by the guys who live there, residents learn handyman skills, construction, animal husbandry, farming, plumbing, electrical work and more. M
ount Dora, I am proud of your hearts to serve, and I am proud to be your minister. As I scrolled through photo after photo of you as servants in action, I was awed by your faithfulness in 2009. After washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus said, “Do you understand what I have done for you? ... You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet” (John 13:1214, NIV). In short, the pathway to Christ-following is being servants. Mount Dora, you have served Jesus well! These photos testify on your behalf. May they cause you to rejoice at the impact you have made this year for Christ and inspire you to do even greater works in 2010!

2010: Be a Part of It JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e had a pretty amazing year at Northland and here at Northland at Oviedo. Northland’s mission statement says, “To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.” This year was exactly that! Do you remember? Service: Together we experienced incredible service to our community and beyond with our Missional May, Luke Project, summer mission trips to Swaziland, and Christmas in the City, just to name a few. Ask someone about them if you don’t remember; they were all amazing ways our congregation impacted people here in Oviedo and all around the world! Worship: Our worship of God corporately took on new forms this year with several worship and prayer gatherings at the Northland at Oviedo Community Center (NOCC) and the growth of our Sunday worship team locally, including new guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, percussionists and singers. I look forward to seeing this team continue to grow as it leads us on Sundays and through our other events in the worship of God together. To know and follow Christ: This is my personal passion for each and every one of you. I know that the closer we are to Him, the more power everything we do will have, the more useful we will be, and the more glory we will bring to God. This year I saw some incredible transformation in people’s lives. I saw strength in loss and

suffering, I saw faithfulness in confusion, and I saw love in the midst of pain. I also witnessed people loving God, others and their community in new and exciting ways. I saw people get connected to each other in small groups, the new Neighborhood Gatherings, classes and many other ways. I hear more and more about the power of community, focused on being like Christ, together! Personal time with the Lord, Scripture reading and prayer all became not just concepts we know, but practices we participate in and hold each other accountable to for the health of the body of Christ! Yes, this has been an amazing year, but as Pastor Joel has been sharing, I truly feel like we have our best days ahead of us. As long as we continue to place our eyes on Christ and seek to know Him and make Him known, we will continue to have growth and power in our midst. There are some very exciting things coming this year, but community is my own personal favorite: seeing more and more people in life relationships with one another, learning from one another, “spurring one another on in love and good deeds,” as the writer of Hebrews tells us to do, all the more as the day approaches. Well, the day in one way or another is always approaching, so let us be alert, stand firm and hold fast to the faith we have been given, and let us do that together! May 2010 bring a renewed sense of commitment to the Lord, to our families and to one another. Will you make yourself available to all God has in store for you and through you for others? Will you get connected to someone, somewhere, somehow, not only because you need it, but because he or she does? Will you stand up and say that this year you will be the one who leads and does not allow the never-ending litany of excuses to get in the way of your faith, your obedience to God, and the abundant life He has in store for you? Will you make resolutions and changes that have an eternal impact? You are not alone; will you “be a part of it” with us? >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

A Little Drama at Doulos On December 16, the Doulos Drama Group took the stage along with the Doulos Worship Team to share with friends and family Perspectives from the Christmas Story. It was a beautiful night of performances. The Drama Group was created to give students with an interest in drama a chance to use their passion and gifting to share Christ. This performance was an awesome reminder of the amazing way God came to earth and some of the questions that people must have had. The Drama Group will continue to meet to hone skills and prepare for upcoming events. If you have a student who is interested in drama and has a passion for God, contact Laurie Copeland (lauriecopeland@cfl.rr.com) about meeting times and location.

Answer: BELIEVE IN JESUS.
BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE “FAMILIES” Ephesians 3:15 God gives each of us a family. Every family is different and special. Some families are small, and some are large. Families might have brothers, sisters, parents, cousins or grandparents. Sometimes friends become part of our family. Our families help us learn to love others. They help us grow. If you believe in Jesus, you are blessed to be a member of another family, too: God’s forever family. Paul is the member of God’s family that said, “From the Father His whole family in heaven and on earth gets its name.” God is the heavenly Father to all who believe in His Son, Jesus. God, our Father, gives us what we need. He shows us we are loved and that He will take care of us. It’s a great family!
Draw a picture of your family.
That’s Avalon.

To the hundreds of volunteers that serve every week in Children’s Ministries — you are wonderful!
This week, think about the people in God’s forever family. Thank God for the ones who are already in heaven. Pray that the ones here on earth will show everyone the Father’s love.

Some of my favorite childhood memories include visits with my grandparents. They would sit with me and tell me wonderful stories. We would play games together and gather around a large table to enjoy a homemade meal that had been prepared just for me. I will never forget those special family times. As I think back on all that God has done over the past year in the hearts of the children at Northland, my most precious memories include watching the family of God work side by side to plant seeds of faith and show God’s love to every child that walks through the doors of our ministry. Through the gifts of your time and talents, God is creating lasting memories for His family. Our Northland children will have favorite memories of the teachers who would sit with them and tell them wonderful stories from the Bible. They will remember the games, meals and special moments from the daddy-daughter dance, Family Fall Festival, summer movie events, Prophets and Promises celebration, Young Believers classes, NOW-Wow classes, baptism ceremonies, induction ceremonies, Buddy Breaks and Little Hands projects. Jesus took time for children. He said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14, NIV). Thank you for taking time for our children as you teach them the stories of Jesus and create a love in their hearts for the Truth. May God richly bless you and your whole family this coming new year! now. Winter Session
Make it one of your New Year’s resolutions!
B
eginning January 6 with a “fireside chat” with Pastor Joel Hunter, session three of NOW is a great way to get the new year started off right! This midweek experience offers in-depth, interactive classes for adults AND a fun, exciting learning environment for children called Now.Wow! First- through third-graders will take a deeper look at what they’ve been learning during weekend worship in Children’s Church. Because this age group learns best through repetition, they will revisit the weekly Bible story, but with new worship songs, interactive games, and crafts that will bring the stories to life. Fourth- and fifth-graders will engage in a hunt to discover God’s Truth. As a team, they’ll put on their detective hats, decode secret messages, solve puzzles and play games that will lead them straight to the Truth! (Individual workbooks for the children will be available at a suggested donation of $8). Lot 9—NOW is for middle school students. They’ll gather at the Welcome Center before going out to Lot 9 of the parking lot for a time of games, fun and fellowship. They will wrap up the evening with a time of Bible study. High school studentS have the opportunity to participate in Doulos, Northland’s student leader training in the Rink.
Theology The Doctrine of christ
Led by Dr. Reggie Kidd, Longwood, sanctuary How do we know that God exists? And even though we believe in Him, having a deep inner sense of His reality, how do we express that belief to others? How can we know if we have an accurate biblical view of who God is? And how can we really know Him and have a personal relationship with Him? Dr. Kidd will teach on these and other related issues. Dr. John Frame, professor of theology at RTS, will join him for week 3 of the session. Child care will be available at no charge for children ages five and under. The importance of prayer and that prayers are eternal. How to relate Scripture to my daily life, understand the Bible in relation to everyday events. How to become closer to God. I have had new doors open up to me. More awareness of the world’s pulling me in multiple directions at the same time and how I must stay focused on Christ to live. To be more aware of the distractions so I can learn to discern between worldly versus Christian ways.

Yes, I recently started to grow my relationship with Jesus. This has helped me understand the at my “beginner” level. Most definitely. I feel a sense of belonging and being with God. Yes, it made us think more carefully about media choices and was very informative. Yes, it surprised me by how relevant it was. It exceeded my expectations. The presenter was knowledgeable and prepared, and made the content entertaining and applicable.

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Building Heaven-Like “Families” “…from whom every family in heaven and on earth…” Scripture focus:
Ephesians 3:15 (NASB)
..................................................................................................................................................
Ephesians 3:15
...from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,...
Worship focus: ........................................................................
Worship the Father today for His goodness. Out of His goodness, He puts people in our lives that show us His love. Summary prayer: ........................................................................
For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:14-21, NASB)
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Building Heaven-like “Families” | “Our Father…” | Matthew 6:9-10
