‘ I N M e . I N YO u . ’ “Lent, as we will experience together soon, designs to interrupt the comfortable patterns of life that so easily lull us to sleep. However, one of the great challenges of Lent is its very longevity in the tradition of the Church. In some ways, the tradition designed to interrupt the pattern has become the pattern that needs to be interrupted. “Lent is a fire alarm, a wake-up call, a closer brush with the death that leads to life. The secret lies in the way we approach the season. Don’t approach it as an interesting tradition, a spiritual exercise or worse - a contest, a rote giving-up-chocolate thing every year. That’s the pattern. “We are looking for a way of practice that narrates us into the Story of stories. Beyond the notion of spiritual disciplines, we are searching for what we like to call ‘story immersion practices.’ Story immersion practices are those curious ways and means that re-orient our own stories inside of the grand story of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” (J.D. Walt, Asbury Theological Seminary)

“ H O W TO ”

“I

n Me. In You.” Northland’s Lenten study, traces Christ’s journey from the wilderness to the cross. Woven into the readings of Christ’s story are ways to practice spiritual discipline. The study itself doesn’t teach much about the disciplines, but by following the daily suggestions, you will be practicing them along the way. Below are some elements that will be included in the study. Consider participating in any or all of them as a wake-up call for your soul. DAILY READER: Read it - every day. Talk about it with friends. PRACTICE THE STORY: Individual exercises are interspersed throughout the Reader. Short, simple, non-threatening, with clear instructions – these are ideas for active, personal worship. STORY IMMERSION PRACTICES: If “practicing the story” exercises are like swim lessons, “story immersion practices” are more like going off the high dive. But don’t be afraid to get wet! God will honor everything you attempt! WEBSTREAM: If you cannot attend the midweek services, log in and join them live on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. through April 8. PODCAST: If you are unable to participate in the Wednesday family worship services in person or online, you can watch them on Northland’s website as podcasts, available the following weekend. Just go to the study, “In Me. In You.” VIMEO: There also will be very thoughtful elements added to the daily reader online periodically for viewing. Watch for them. WORSHIP: Worship on site or online each weekend. Dr. Hunter’s sermon topics will be laying a broad foundation for Christ’s journey to the cross, as outlined in the Lenten study. MIDWEEK FAMILY SERVICES: Take advantage of additional worship opportunities each Wednesday at 7 p.m. through April 8. These will be unique experiences. See the schedule in this issue. FAST AND FEAST: each week, consider choosing something from which to abstain. Then on Sunday, feast on that from which you fasted. Let it remind you that we serve a God of joy and goodness. His nature, and therefore His economy, is not one of scarcity, but one of plenty. Think about that great feast we all anticipate—the marriage supper of the Lamb. CELEBRATE: Remember the joy of the season. each Sunday is set aside to practice the discipline of celebration. PARTICIPATE IN A LENTEN CONNECTION GROUP: While practicing the story is a very personal endeavor, it is both encouraging and an essential part of discipline to come together with other believers. If you wish to join a Connection Group, registration can be completed online at Northland’s website (www.northlandchurch.net). If you do not have access to a computer, on-site registration will be available at the Connection Center, located in the lobby, at all locations before and after services on the weekends of February 21 to 23 and February 28 to March 1. ABOUT NORTHLAND ..............................................................................

A............................................................................................................................................................ WELCOME TO FIRST-TIME VISITORS

OUR VISION To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (ephesians 1:2, NIV).

OUR CORE VALUES Worship, Spiritual Formation, personal generational Leadership and partnership.

Please pick up a visitor card from one of the ushers or at the Welcome Center so that we can learn more about you and help you to connect to the many classes, groups and opportunities to serve with others. Ministry,

Word Weavers Welcomes Writers BY Cheri Cowell Published author and Word Weavers participant

S

cattered across more than seven rooms in The Rink, small groups of eight to 10 nervous and excited men and women gather to critique one another. They’ve been meeting together for more than 10 years, although their numbers have mushroomed in the last two. They come for different reasons—some for encouragement, some for the spit and polish only a serious group like this one can offer. All come because they’ve been called — called to be writers. In 1997, a handful of Northlanders gathered around a kitchen table. They talked about their hopes and dreams and how they might support one another as each answered their call to be a Christian writer. From that small group Word Weavers — a Christian critique group now recognized as one of the premier Christian writers’ groups in the nation — was born. Within two years, the group had grown from five to 25 and began meeting at the Seminole County Public Library on Oxford. As the group grew, so did its members’ publishing successes. Yet, the leadership continued to take new writers under their wings. This emphasis on “giving back” is at the heart of what makes this group tick. “When you’ve been given so much, it’s only natural to want to turn around and give to someone else,” Linda Rooks, a published author and a founding member of the group, says with a smile. Today, the group exceeds 100, with three “sister groups” meeting throughout the state. At 9:30 a.m. the second Saturday of each month, the doors to the fellowship hall, located in The Rink, swing open for people from as far away as Tampa

Lousy Economy, Loving Community “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10 (NIV)

H

as the bad economy got you down? Have you experienced lost income or employment, or are you worried it might happen to you? In the midst of uncertainty, God offers us His spirit of optimism and opportunity. Optimism comes as we press into God and believe the things He says, such as, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5), “Surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20), “I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit” (John 15:16), and, “In all things God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28). Opportunity comes as we find the ways to serve others. When you use your gifts and talent to serve others, you build loving community. A smile, an hour, a skill. God gives gifts to us so we can enjoy them and give them away to other people. And He does this in the context of our Christian community, be it in Mount Dora, Oviedo, Ocoee, Longwood or wherever you gather for worship and service. You’ve got something that others need. And the Holy Spirit is prompting you to get involved and serve.

and Gainesville to gather with fellow writers. The meetings begin with praise and worship, followed by a short time for discussing upcoming writers’ conferences and to celebrate good news offered by members. Some have finally submitted for publication consideration that piece everyone has been critiquing. Others share publication success stories. Every step of faith is applauded. While the meeting is under way, a few hardy souls divide the group into smaller critique groups. During the final two hours of the meeting, these groups read aloud and systematically review each manuscript. All genres of writing are covered in this diverse group, from fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, teen books, young adult manuscripts, “chick lit,” fantasy, humor, mystery, memoirs, devotions, short stories, curriculum and Bible studies. The meetings wrap up at 12:30 p.m. The goal of Word Weavers is to help writers serve God with excellence in whatever writing they are called to do. “Not everyone is called to publication,” Loyd Boldman, a member of the group’s leadership team, offers. “If you have been called to write your family history, that family history needs to be

written to the best of your ability, and we are here to help you do that.” But don’t let that mislead you. This group is serious about its craft, with nearly 40 published authors, several with multiple books, among the group. The Northland Bookstore has a section for these local “celebrities,” and the authors would welcome the opportunity to speak to any group about their passions. “We even have a book about us and the Word Weavers critique model,” says author and past president Eva Marie Everson. “When we attend writers’ conferences and others hear we’re a Word Weaver, the next thing said is, ‘I wish we had a group like that in my hometown.’ Now they can because we have our own book to show them how.” When one visits this group, it’s clear they have something special going on. A flurry of excitement permeates the air. These writers are finding what most of us are also looking for—a place to belong, to share their gifts, and to pass along to others the grace they’ve been given. “We welcome anyone to join us,” says Larry J. Leech II, president of Word Weavers. “You won’t find a more welcoming place if you are called to weave words.” For more information, visit www.wordweaversonline.com.

(l to r) Judy Johnson, Pete Pedersen, Karen Hanson, Paulette Velho, Larry J. Leech II and Eva Marie Everson critique a 1,500-word submission during the regular monthly meeting.

We at Northland can build a loving community by serving others. Do you love to have people over to your home? Why not host a small group Bible study? Do you have awesome power tools and the hands to match? Lead or join a Helping Hands event in your community. Do you love kids? Sign up to serve at The Carpenter’s House or in Northland’s Children’s Ministries. Is your balance sheet strong? Support a Northland missionary or increase your offering. Since the gifts of God are endless, the possibilities to build community are, too. You’ve got something that the rest of us need. And we will be better off when you give it. We can (and should) be encouraged because God promises to be with us, to train us to be useful for Him, and to use all things, even hard things, to bring eternal good for His people. You and I can trust Christ in this bad economy. Fight back against the devil and the fear and discouragement he stirs up. Don’t run and hide; serve and thrive!

A NORTHLAND NEWS INTERVIEW JeReMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

JErEmy JoBson to BE commissionEd FEBruary 22 HE BECOMES SITE MINISTER OF NORTHLAND AT OVIEDO

A

fter a year and a half as associate site minister for Northland at Oviedo, Jeremy Jobson will be commissioned as minister of our Oviedo site on Sunday, February 22 at the 9 and 11 a.m. services. As a licensed commissioned minister, Jeremy takes on the leadership role for all aspects of the site—including pastoral care, counseling, spiritual formation, equipping, empowering the congregation to serve in the community and making connections for serving in the community. previously, he had worked under the guidance of Dr. Dan Lacich, former Oviedo site minister who now serves as our distributed sites pastor. While Jeremy will now have more spiritual and organizational responsibility, he has been filling these roles quite nicely.

“Jeremy has done an amazing job of leading and expanding the ministry at Oviedo,” Lacich says. “Not only is he great with ideas, but he also has a wonderful mix of being both detailoriented and people-oriented. God has blessed him with a wonderful set of gifts for serving the Oviedo congregation.” More than 500 adults and children call Northland at Oviedo their congregation—and Jeremy is passionate about each and every one of them knowing God more. “My desire is that God would work through me in this ministry to encourage, inspire and lead others in the passionate pursuit of Christ, that their desire would be to know Him and make Him known by loving Him and loving others. The more our congregation members keep their eyes on Christ, the more change will come through us in our community and the world. This is why it is so important to be connected in small groups and not just come to service.” While leading the Oviedo congregation, Jeremy has been pursuing a Master of Arts in biblical studies at Reformed Theological Seminary, a degree he expects to receive in spring 2010. He received his bachelor’s in 1996 in history and international affairs from Florida State university. Jeremy and his wife, Maggie, helped launch Northland at Oviedo in 2006 at the Oviedo Marketplace movie theater; he became an intern for Northland’s Oviedo site that September. The site moved to Hagerty High School in spring 2007, and Jeremy became full-time associate site minister that September. Jeremy has been married to Maggie for more than four years. They live in Oviedo and have two children: Zoe, 3; and Matthew, 1. They have attended Northland since 2005.

ecently, we joined with other churches in the West Orange area to show the movie Fireproof. The idea was to bring churches together and offer something for our community. We met in the Family Life Center at St. pauls, and it was standing room only. This blog was posted at “thechurchofwestorange.com” the day after the event, and I thought it was worth everyone being able to see how God is moving with those willing to be “The Church” in West Orange. It is hard to put into words what I felt last night as we watched people after people walk in and join together to watch more than just a movie. The first ever “together event” for the Church of West Orange happened last night on the campus of St. pauls presbyterian in Ocoee. We bought the license to show Fireproof—a recent movie from the same group that released Facing the Giants. The many local expressions of the church that make up the Church of West Orange invited the people of our respective church families to come together and invite friends and family that they are on the journey with for a movie event that challenges every person to live beyond self in every relationship (specifically focused on

marriage, but even more than that). Well, people were invited to come together, and people came. It was more than a full auditorium, with folks even standing around and some sitting on the floor. More than just the numbers, the participation and environment were electric, anointed even. Thanks to all the awesome volunteers who made it happen. Thanks to Family Christian Store and Scott Christopher for helping supply The Love Dare book, as well as being there to provide other resources for those who might want them. Thanks to Jim West and the Total Life Counseling team, who were present to talk with anyone who came that just wanted someone to talk with then and there. Thanks to St. pauls for being such an amazing host. Thanks to erin Bethea, the co-star and female lead in the film, for coming and hanging with us and being interviewed afterward. It was a special time. Most of all, thank You, Lord, for inviting us to join You in what You are doing with Your church. May we continue to be about loving and growing people and watch You blossom Your church, and not just be about growing “my church.” The conversations afterward included comments like: “This was an answer to prayer. Not just to see something that promotes healthy marriages and families, but to see the church quit being so religiously divided and be spiritually unified.” “What a challenging message for the newest wed and the oldest wed.” “It’s amazing to see what God will do when His church comes together as one.” “This was special. Can’t wait to see what God does next.” And it was special. We pray that the effect of last night’s gathering will go far beyond anything we could ask or imagine. We pray that everyone there will take “the love dare” and give love not only in their marriages and families, but in every relationship.

As we have more and more opportunities to be the church in our community, I encourage you to grab the vision and make it your own. God wants to use you just as He is using others to make a difference for His Kingdom. Keep informed of all the ways you can connect, from the Lenten studies, to serving opportunities, to small groups. I love seeing God in action through you, the church. I am proud to be serving alongside you. >>> WeSTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHuRCH.NeT

matErnaL carE cEntEr BY SuSAN HOLOWeCKY Susan Holowecky is a field coordinator of evangelistic social projects for the Amazon basin of Peru. She serves with Missionary Ventures International in Yurimaguas, Peru. Northland is a monthly supporter of the Maternal Care Center and has sent two construction teams to help build the center. It is a shelter for women with high-risk pregnancies who live on the river network that makes up the headwaters of the Amazon River. Susan writes, “When Northland became involved in the monthly support of our project, we were able to expand to take in and recuperate extremely malnourished babies, and also open a full-time medical clinic for the destitute. We are very grateful for your help.” In the following article, Susan shares more about the center and some of the lives forever changed by it.

W

hen we opened the Hogar Materno Hannah (or Maternal Care Center) in 2002, we had no idea of the range of ministry we eventually would be involved in. We began by taking in pregnant women who had been identified by the Health Department as high-risk. Our area had a high maternal mortality rate, and they needed a home where indigent women could stay while in town waiting to give birth. You see, we have almost no roads in our state, and our moms live from a few hours up to several days away by boat. If they have a crisis situation before or during birth, there is no time to make it to a hospital. Dying on the way into the city is a very real possibility. providing a shelter for Mily, before. these pregnant women to stay in became the solution. And so we began … We ministered the Gospel to the women and their family members, and many have received Christ, while others have grown in their walk with God through our discipleship. Several months later, the hospital called and asked if we would mind caring for a baby boy recovering from pneumonia. Wanting to extend our service to the community, we said yes. What we didn’t know was that the eight-month-old boy weighed only 5 1/2 pounds and had a severe cleft palate. Our young director, Yoly, had to feed him with an eye dropper.

She had no experience with this type of severe malnutrition, and she was frightened just to hold him. But being a brave and valiant soul, she set out to take care of him, praying every step of the way. And our great God responded, healing little Juan Carlos of pneumonia and dysentery. He left in a few months, weighing 13 pounds. He went home fully recovered, but sadly came back when he was almost 18 months old and weighed about eight pounds. His baby sister was malnourished, too, and his mom left them with us. They are now two of the happiest children you might know. Yoly proved to be a wonderful “mom” to children not her own (not very common in our area). When Mily arrived at the Hogar Materno Hannah, she was 10 months old, but weighed only around five pounds. She came from the Morona River, six days away by boat, and was brought by the mayor’s office because they had seen the wonderful recovery at our center of another child from her area. Mily’s grandmother was raising her. Her father had died from AIDS, and her mother gave her up. Mily was very ill with diarrhea and sepsis. But we prayed, and visiting pastors prayed, and the Lord responded. You can see the results: After three months of loving care, she gained 12 pounds and was in good health when she left to return to the Morona. Her grandmother loves her very much and was delighted. please continue to pray for her, as sadly, Mily, too, has been diagnosed as HIV-positive. But at least now she has a better quality of life, and we still pray for complete recovery. Nothing is impossible with our God. Thank you for your giving and prayers, which enable us to help precious and innocent children like Mily. We now provide a number of services in our community. We take in a variety of patients who need recovery when there is no bed space at the hospital. We take in abandoned children until the courts can place them. Mily, after. Recently, we were “given” a couple of newborn babies given up by their mothers. There is no other home for children in Yurimaguas. My peruvian staff ministers to the moms and children and the relatives they bring with them. God is lifted up, people are discipled, and lives are saved. All this takes place because God’s people care enough to get involved in missions by helping to finance the ministry. Some personally help us build our buildings, paint our rooms, organize the medicines, or just hold the babies and play with the children. We are grateful for all your help, and our God will honor your labor of love.

Answer: THE WORD BECAME FLESH

JESUS BECAME A MAN John 1:14 In the Bible, the Word is a name for God’s words written in the Bible. It is also the name of God’s Son, Jesus. He is 100 percent man and 100 percent God at the same time. His friend John explained that in the beginning, the Word, who is Jesus, was already there with God, and He was God. All things were made through Jesus. Then Jesus, the Word, became flesh. That means He became a man with skin and hair and everything! He made His dwelling, which is another name for His home, with us. We have seen His glory. Glory is the greatness that can only belong to God. Jesus came from the Father. And He was full of grace and truth. No one has ever seen God. But Jesus, the Son, has shown us what God, the Father, is like.

asH WEdnEsday tradition BY CONNIe RAINWATeR Director of Content Development

O

ver the past decade, Ash Wednesday has become a favorite element of Northland’s Lenten season. This day of fasting and confession culminates with the traditional imposing of the ashes. As each participant passes before the officiant, receiving ashes on his/her forehead in the shape of a cross, each also receives these words from Genesis 3:19: “You are made from dust and to dust you will return.” While this may seem a rather morbid practice, for us who focus so often on God’s grace, it can be a powerful reminder of how much we need that grace. The use of sackcloth and ashes as a sign of mourning or deep repentance goes back more than three thousand years and involves many cultures. Sackcloth was an uncomfortable garment made from goat hair. Ashes were a symbol of great personal remorse. We have come to associate them with Job: “Therefore I … repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:6). Sackcloth and ashes are referenced throughout the Bible

nearly 100 times from Genesis to Revelation. The custom of combining prayer, fasting and ashes goes back to the early Hebrews:

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. –Daniel 9:3 (NIV) The very early Christian church encouraged the use of sackcloth and ashes for the same symbolic reasons. New converts in early Rome would receive the ashes on Ash Wednesday and would be made to dress in sackcloth until Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before easter. Much later, Christian churches continued to think about how best to use the symbolism of ashes. Though sometimes practiced privately during this period, ultimately, this became a public practice, but instead of sprinkling ashes on the head, ashes were rubbed onto the forehead in the shape of a cross. Marking the forehead with a cross of ashes was a sign of repentance and a reminder of the penitent’s baptism. While these rituals are not required of the church, they can be significant reminders of all that Christ has done for us. Whether or not you decide to participate in the Ash Wednesday service this year, make it your goal to remember that what brought Christ to the cross was our own sin.

SUCCESSFULLY WORSHIPING GOD TOGETHER WITH YOUR KIDS

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER AT NORTHLAND?

BY BeCKY WeLDON Children’s Curriculum Team

C

hildren are a special part of God’s Kingdom. He delights in their worship because they approach His throne with an enviable innocence and simple belief. In fact, Jesus held up children as an example of how all believers should participate in His Kingdom:

1)

2)

He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. –Matthew 18:2-4 (NIV) 3) This year, as Dr. Hunter teaches about God’s Kingdom, consider worshiping with the Kingdom’s youngest members. Throughout Lent, Northland is offering intergenerational family worship services on Wednesday evenings. These services are being designed to be family-friendly and interactive in nature—perfect for those short attention spans! As parents, the idea of worshiping with our children can seem overwhelming. Be assured that with a little preparation and dedication, the entire family can enjoy memorable worship experiences. Check this same column each week for tips to help you prepare your children for the service. Here are a few ideas to help you get started: • Discuss with your children why God wants your worship. Explain what they can expect in the service and the behavior they should show to honor God. Show excitement over worshiping together; it’s contagious! • Create a worship folder. Ask your children to decorate a hardcovered three-ring binder. Insert blank paper and colored pencils. During listening moments in the service, ask them to write or draw what they see and hear. Suggest they include questions to discuss with you later.

Receive God’s gift of salvation, made possible through Jesus Christ. If you are unsure of what this means, the Belong study will take you through the biblical steps. Complete the Belong study in one of the following ways: • Take the online study at www.northlandchurch. net. • Purchase the Belong DVD and study booklets in the Northland bookstore. • From Northland’s website, download the pdf and print a copy. Meet with a membership coach to share your story and clarify any questions you have concerning membership: • Ongoing opportunities will be available to meet with a membership coach in person each Wednesday night from February 25 through April 8. Simply go to the Longwood site’s hospitality suite, located directly behind the main Welcome Center, following the Lenten worship service. • A membership coach will call those who complete the online membership process in order for them to share the story of how they came to Christ. Online membership does require current personal contact information.

PrEacHing tHE mEssagE tHis WEEKEnd DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR

........................................................................................................................................................................................... Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a united Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of evangelicals and the World evangelical Alliance. >>> TO ReAD MORe ABOuT DR. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. WORSHIP FOCUS: ................................................................................................................

Worship Christ today for His holiness. He alone lived a perfect, sinless life. If He had sinned, He would have ceased to be God. Because He was God, He could bear the full penalty for our sin. SUMMARY PRAYER: ................................................................................................................

Father, we praise You that You remembered Your promise to reconcile the world. You came to us in the form of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word made flesh. SpIRITuAL pHYSICAL And exercise thyself unto godliness: for bodily exercise is profitable for a little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come. — 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (ASV) There is a lot of focus in our culture these days on being physically fit. Thousands upon thousands of books are written each year on diet, exercise, nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. What if we, as believers, gave as much focus to our spiritual fitness? Lent, the 40 days before Easter, is a very appropriate time to focus on our spiritual well-being, to intentionally set out to develop better spiritual habits in our lives, to take a sort of spiritual physical. “Spiritual discipline” is just another way of saying healthy spiritual habits. There has been a great resurgence of interest in recent years in spiritual disciplines. While there is no master list of these habits and practices, Dallas Willard separates them into two groups: disciplines of engagement and disciplines of

abstinence. In other words, some disciplines require us to engage fully in a particular activity – like prayer, worship, service, study, fellowship, confession or celebration. Other disciplines require us to cease from some specific activity, pursuing instead solitude, silence, fasting, frugality, chastity, secrecy or sacrifice.

“A more reasonable estimate of human costs and values will lead us to think that no labour is better expended than that which explores the way to the treasure-houses of the spirit, and shows mankind where to find those goods which are increased by being shared, and which none can take from us.” (William Ralph Inge, english author, Anglican priest; 1860-1954)

Optional Introductory Meeting

Lesson Objective:

Romans 8:10 Romans 12:2 1 Corinthians 15:44-46 Hebrews 12:11 ephesians 3:16

• To introduce the daily reader, “In Me. In You.”. • To challenge your group members to fully engage in the study.

Bible Truths:

Transition: (2 minutes) “We live from our heart. “The part of us that drives and organizes our life is not the physical. This remains true even if we deny it. You have a spirit within you and it has been formed. It has taken on a specific character. I have a spirit and it has been formed. This is true of everyone.” (Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart)

• Spiritual disciplines are those practices that lead to spiritual transformation. • God will honor our attempts at spiritual discipline.

Opener: (5 minutes) What is your favorite form of physical exercise? What is your least favorite form of physical exercise? In general, have your experiences with exercise routines been positive or negative? Why?

Disney recently released a children’s comedy called WALL-e, based on the life of a robot that alone is left to clean up a polluted earth. There is a great line at the beginning of the movie: “After 700 years of doing what he was built for, WALL-E discovered what he was meant for.” This is a great picture of what spiritual discipline can do for us as believers. We don’t have to live our lives wondering what we are meant for. Yet we need some training to get past the physical realm, in order to be able to focus on the spiritual realm. That is the goal of the “In Me. In You.” study. While the term “spiritual disciplines” can sound ominous, they are really just those habits that, if implemented intentionally, will awaken and strengthen our spirits. each week the Connection Group will focus on one discipline. As you go through the reader, you’ll employ many of them: prayer and confession, meditation, celebration, fasting, fellowship and more.

Interactive Learning: (15 minutes) Ask everyone in your group to choose a partner. Assign the following verses to the couples until all are assigned. Have each couple look up their verse together, read it and be ready to tell the group what it says about spiritual discipline. proverbs 4:23 John 4:14 Romans 6:19

CONNeCTION GROup

This Lenten season, consider taking a spiritual physical. Assess the condition of your spiritual health, intentionally exercising those parts that are weakest and identifying those parts that are strongest.

LeNTeN CONNeCTION GROup LeSSON pLAN

Introduction: (3 minutes)

H O W TO J O I N A LeNTeN STuDY

Bible Application: (15 minutes) The Bible often compares physical exercise to spiritual exercise – referring to life as a race to be won, a course to be finished. (1 Corinthians 9:24; Galatians 2:2; 2 Timothy 4:7; Hebrews 12:1) • What comparisons do you see between the challenges and the benefits of physical exercise and spiritual exercise? • When have you witnessed a physical transformation as a result of exercise? • Do you think spiritual exercise brings the same challenges and benefits? • Can you back your answer up with Scripture?

Challenge: (10 minutes) C.S. Lewis is quoted as saying, “You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.” practicing the story this Lenten season will remind us that we are souls. Ask your group members: • What are your hopes and expectations of this study? • How might engaging in practicing the story by practicing the disciplines help you to acknowledge that you are a spiritual being? • How can we help each other finish the course?

Closing: (5 minutes) Close in prayer, asking God to accomplish His purposes in every heart present in your group. pray that you would learn to hold one another up. pray for His transforming power to be evident in each life.
