ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Our Core Values Worship, Spiritual Formation, Personal generational Leadership and Partnership.

Please pick up a visitor card from one of the ushers or at the Welcome Center so that we can learn more about you and help you to connect to the many classes, groups and opportunities to serve with others. Ministry,

SERMON NOTES on today’s message by our site minister:

Practicing the Presence of God Scriptures: John 14:23; Psalm 25:1-10

T

he season of Lent is upon us. Christians from the second century to today have set aside the 40 days leading up to Easter for spiritual disciplines and personal holiness. Fasting, giving, serving, Scripture and prayer – all of these practices have been employed by believers during Lent. Their goal? to practice the presence of God. James

NOTES:

exhorts us to “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8, NKJV). But how do we draw near to God? And does this Scripture imply that He is far off? Though we may feel distant from Him at times, is it true? The answer becomes even more mysterious when we see what happens when we place our faith in Jesus Christ. “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23, NIV). The eternal, triune God condescends to make His home with us! So God is near, but we must work to experience His nearness. In this message, we will trust the Lord to teach us how to press into His holy presence. We will use Psalm 25 as a guide. Psalm 25 is the perfect prayer for the believer who has God living in him and yet struggles to experience that presence. We will focus on the first 10 verses of this Psalm, but also will consider other applicable verses. Some of the Scriptures that are really helpful on this subject include Psalm 32, Psalm 103:2, Romans 7:21-25, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Colossians 1:2627, 2 Timothy 3:16 and Hebrews 12:10, 14. We will look at some of these passages, and I encourage you to check them all out. And may the fully present God rise up from within as we practice His presence! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

5 JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

NOTES:

SERMON NOTES on today’s message by our site minister:

beloved, behold Mark 1:9-15 (NIV) 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, 13and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Psalm 25:4-5 (NLT) 4 Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. 5 Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.

Northland Hosting Seminole Project Homeless Connect Event to provide housing, services, hospitality to homeless BY SARAH MATTINGLY Northland Executive Assistant, Service

W

hen many people think of a homeless person, they usually think of someone intoxicated or on drugs, panhandling on the street. But that is the case for only 20 percent of Central Florida’s homeless population, who are chronically homeless men and women with substance abuse and mental health problems living on the streets, in camps and in abandoned buildings. The reality in Central Florida, according to Cathy Jackson, executive director of Homeless Services Network, is that families are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population, and homeless children make up 32 percent of the homeless population. This also may be surprising: 48 percent of homeless people go to work every day. So homelessness has hit close to home for many Central Florida families, and Northland wants to help. The church is the host site for the Seminole Project Homeless Connect (PHC) on Friday, March 20. This is a one-day event to provide housing, services and hospitality in a convenient one-stop model directly to men, women and families experiencing homelessness. The Homeless Services Network of Central Florida sponsors PHC events across Central Florida. More than 40 nonprofit agencies, faithbased groups, government agencies and businesses participate in each event. In Seminole County, more than 150 volunteers from Northland and surrounding churches and organizations will be assisting an expected population of 300 homeless people living in camps, on the streets, in vehicles and in abandoned buildings. Services will include medical care, showers, meals, housing programs, employment opportunities, mental health services and counseling. The Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security Administration and legal services will assist clients in applying for IDs, driver’s licenses and Social Security cards. You can volunteer in a variety of ways for this March 20 event. Shepherds are needed to guide the client through the event. Volunteers are needed for crowd control, donation distribution and more. There are several times to choose from if you want to volunteer for part of the event, or the full day. Homeless Services Network does require a training session for all volunteers, Monday, March 16. There are two sessions to choose from: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. in The Rink at Northland’s Student Ministries and Care Center. To register to serve, visit www.northlandchurch. net; select “Serve Others” on the top menu bar; select the “Be Sent to Serve Locally” icon; select the “Click Here & Sign Up” icon; then browse the list for the Project Homeless Connect teams and join the one that interests you. For questions about this event, contact Vanessa Puleo (vanessa.puleo@ northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7613). To help you learn more about homelessness and its causes, Cathy pointed out during a planning session for the upcoming Project Homeless Connect that five common circumstances can cause homelessness. Domestic Violence Many times women fleeing domestic abuse leave their homes with their children and only the clothes they are wearing. They turn to domestic violence shelters for safety, shelter and the support services needed to stabilize their lives.

Situational Poverty Forty percent of the jobs in Central Florida are service industry jobs paying $8 per hour or less, usually without health benefits. In order to afford the average two-bedroom apartment in Central Florida, a wage earner needs to make $21 per hour and work 40 hours per week. Even when two wage earners in the family work 40 hours a week at $8 per hour, they pay a disproportionate part of their monthly income for rent. If there is any disruption in income or increase in expenses — such as food and gas cost hikes, a medical emergency, an unforeseen car repair or lost wages due to a cutback in hours — families find themselves unable to afford their rent and experience an eviction. Foreclosures This is a new type of family homelessness being seen in Central Florida. Some property owners who are renting their properties are being faced with foreclosure. During the foreclosure process, they are sometimes not notifying their tenants and are still collecting monthly rent. Families are receiving a five- or 10-day eviction notice and do not have funds available for security deposits or first and last months’ rent for a new lease, and many end up in shelters or motel rooms that are rented by the night. Lack of Services for Veterans The average time between discharge from the armed forces and homelessness for Vietnam veterans was six years. Unfortunately, that period has shortened to 18 months for our veterans returning from the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan. The increased incidence of post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury has overtaxed the limited services of the Veterans Administration. Many veterans are slipping through the system and ending up on the streets.

n partnership with Northland’s single moms event being held on February 21, 38 children age 1 through 10 years old came together on February 14 to serve single moms. Along with parents and grandparents, children decorated bags and made cards, then filled each bag with many donated items. Each family then prayed over the bags as they completed them, asking blessings for the mom that would receive their special bag. Little Hands projects happen every month and are designed to provide opportunities for parents and their children age 10 and younger to serve. Siblings are welcome! There are also opportunities to serve with your younger children out in the community, such as preparing dinner for Ronald McDonald House residents. Check the Local Serving Projects on Northland’s website (www. northlandchurch.net) for details on many serving projects and to register. If you have questions about the Little Hands Projects, contact Lucee Price in Children’s Ministries (407-9370540 or lucee.price@northlandchurch.net).

Inadequate Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Chronically homeless men and women may have an underlying mental illness that needs treatment, but there is a severe shortage of mental health treatment beds and prescription assistance. As a result, this segment of the homeless population turns to self-medication, using alcohol or illegal drugs to “treat” their symptoms. Dakota Diachesyn used his artistic talents for this Little Hands Project.

It is important to understand the broader issues relative to homelessness as it can affect your family, your friends and your church family. There are facts and figures available to any who would like to dig deeper into the homeless situation in Central Florida. Cathy Jackson and her staff at the Homeless Services Network can be of assistance. Visit them at their website (www.hsncfl.org).

Hundreds of homeless people will show up to receive God’s love.

Answer: THE WILDERNESS

WHAT IS LENT? Lent means spring. It is the 40 days before Easter when we join believers all over the world in getting our hearts ready to celebrate Easter. The 40 days reminds us of the 40 days when Jesus fasted (gave up eating) in the wilderness. There, Satan tempted Jesus, but Jesus never sinned. To sin is to do wrong in God’s eyes. We all sin. We all need God’s forgiveness. Jesus died so we could be forgiven. During Lent, many believers fast by giving up something special or starting a new habit that pleases God. We don’t do these things to look good to God or to others. Our choices during Lent just remind us of who we are as believers—we are forgiven sinners who belong to Jesus. Now that is something to celebrate!

Breakfast and lunch!

Draw a picture of Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness.

Northland’s 5-day Bible study for children, The Daily Way, is available at www.northlandchurch.net or at Children’s Church.

For the month of March, the Children’s offering will go to the Orlando Rescue Mission.

During Lent, start a new habit that reminds you that you belong to Jesus. Some kids may read the Bible or choose a special place to pray each day. Some kids may draw or make something for someone else. What will you do?

Family WorshiP: Wiggles and Worship BY BECKY WELDON Children’s Curriculum Team

M

any families tried worshiping with their children at the Intergenerational Family Worship Service last Wednesday night. If you were one, were you frustrated because your children would not sit still? You were not alone! The benefit of this special service is that you can teach your children the joys of worshiping God in the company of other parents who are also guiding their children. And thankfully, your children do not need to sit still for the entire service. In fact, your children will learn more about God when they are fully engaged to the best of their abilities. Try the following ways of helping your children participate in the service: Worship in Music • Insist your children stand up when everyone else stands. Lift them up or stand by an aisle so they can see the screens and stage. • Encourage them to sing the songs. If they cannot read the words, show them how to hum or sing “la la” to the tune of the music. Or teach them a few words of the chorus and encourage them to sing the words whenever they hear them. Kids love to clap and shake to the music, so be sure to do both when the beat is appropriate! • Ask your children to choose one song and write or draw what the song told them about God in their worship folders.*

Bible Readings • Be sure your children take their own Bibles to worship. The Northland Bookstore staff can assist you in finding an appropriate Bible for each child. • Help your reading children find the passage and encourage them to read along. • For children learning to read, hold your Bible where they can see the words. Point to the words to help them follow the reading. Communion If you feel your children are ready to participate in Communion, the Family Worship Service is a great place to introduce them to this special sacrament. Communion will be served each Wednesday night during Lent. • Before the service, read together how Jesus first served Communion to His disciples in Matthew 26:17-20, 26-30. Explain that Christians continue to eat bread and drink grape juice to remember how Jesus died on the cross so that our sins are forgiven. Assure them that the bread and juice are just symbols (like pictures) of Jesus and are not really parts of Him. • During the reflection time in Communion, ask your children to write or draw a prayer in their worship folders confessing their sins to God. Discuss their prayers during your ride home. *The worship folder is a tool your children can use to write or draw their thoughts and questions during listening moments in the service. Let them each choose and decorate a hardcovered three-ring binder, then fill the folders with blank paper and colored pencils.

lenten connection group lesson plan Week 1 Materials for Lesson: • Bible • Copy of Babette’s Feast: the story (available from “In Me. In You.” on Northland’s website) or the movie (available from Netflix)

Lesson Objective: To show that spiritual disciplines can be a valuable reminder of who we are in Christ.

Bible Passage: Matthew 6:16-18

Bible Truths: • God will honor our spiritual discipline. • Fasting can be a valuable counterpart to feasting.

Optional Opener: (10 minutes) Option #1: Share some of your best memories of feasts (ex: holiday meals, weddings, celebration of a life achievement, etc.). What made those memories great? What made them feel like feasts? Option #2: Use the rules of one of the following games to communicate your favorite food: • Pictionary (drawing, no talking), • Outburst (word clues, but no forms of the word itself) • Charades (no talking or drawing, only actions)

Interactive Learning: If your group is one that might enjoy a movie night, consider renting Babette’s Feast and watching it together. (Available from Netflix. Also available from Amazon for $9.99.) You may choose instead to read the summary of the story, written by Philip Yancey, together with your group to help promote discussion. The story will be included as an attachment to your weekly e-mail if you are registered as a Connection Group. It is also available, along with these Connection Group lessons, from the “In Me. In You.” online study at www.northlandchurch.net. After reading the story or watching the movie together, ask the following questions:

1. What can you tell of this sect’s view of God from their chosen lifestyle? 2. How would this story be different if every meal in this community had been similar to the feast? 3. Why is it easier to take the path of self-deprivation, like the dean and his sect, than to embrace Babette’s view of God and His nature? 4. When have you been given a picture of God’s grace? 5. How do fasting and feasting both enrich our understanding of God and His grace?

Transition: (2 minutes) Jesus Himself often went without food in order to pray. We are encouraged to make this a part of our spiritual exercise. But motives for fasting are so crucial that the New Testament has warnings about it.

Bible Application: (15 minutes) Read Matthew 6:16-18. What are some negative motivations for fasting? What are some positive motivations for fasting? Challenge: (3 minutes) There are many methods of fasting. But the point should be to deprive our bodies in order to focus on feeding our souls. Ask your group how many methods of fasting they can think of. (You will get answers like: Skip one meal per day in order to pray. Go without food all day, using hunger as a cue to think about those who are always hungry. Fast from a single food item all week in order to feast on it on the Sabbath.) Challenge your group to choose one of these methods to exercise this week. Reinforce the fact that some will take baby steps, and some will try a marathon. But God will honor whatever we attempt.

Transition: Most of us will be good at feasting or fasting. This study will give equal opportunity, if you follow the Reader.

Closing: (2 minutes) Plan some kind of feast for the following week’s meeting. It can be a literal feast, or it can be symbolic. You may want to bake fresh bread and serve Communion, focusing on the fact that Jesus is the bread of life.

preaching the message this weekend dr. steve brown, president of Key Life Network

........................................................................................................................................................................................... Our preacher at Longwood this weekend is Dr. Steve Brown, president of Key Life Network, a Christian radio network. Key Life’s 15-minute daily radio broadcast, as well as the one-minute “Think Spots,” are heard throughout the United States, Canada and internationally, featuring the Bible teaching of Dr. Brown. In addition to the radio programs, Key Life also offers cassette tapes, CDs and publications that teach and help listeners grow in the knowledge of God, producing life-changing results. “What makes this program unique,” according to its Web site (www.keylife.org), “is Steve’s humor, illustrations and practical application of Scripture, all with the focus on our freedom in Christ.” Dr. Brown also is a seminary professor and author. He previously served as a pastor for more than 25 years and now devotes much of his time to the radio broadcast. Dr. Brown has a variety of experiences and a unique perspective on life, but refuses to be a “guru.” He gives, in his teaching, the freedom to think. Overall, Steve has become known for his refreshing and practical biblical applications. Currently, Dr. Brown is serving as a professor of preaching at Reformed Theological Seminary in Oviedo. He sits on the board of the National Religious Broadcasters and Harvest USA and is the author of several books, including Born Free, When Being Good Isn’t Good Enough and When Your Rope Breaks. His articles appear in such magazines and journals as Leadership, Decision, Plain Truth and Today’s Christian Woman. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. BROWN, VISIT WWW.KEYLIFE.ORG.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

A Beggar at the Banquet scripture focus: Mark 1:9-15; Matthew 4:1-11 (ESV) ................................................................................................................ Mark 1:9-15 (ESV) The Baptism of Jesus 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” The Temptation of Jesus 12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. Jesus Begins His Ministry 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Matthew 4:1-11 (ESV) The Temptation of Jesus 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Worship focus: ................................................................................................................ Worship Christ today for His perfection. He is perfect in all things, and came as the perfect sacrifice for our sin, so that we might have perfect freedom from sin and be made sons and daughters through Him that loved us.

Summary prayer: ................................................................................................................ “Almighty and everlasting God, You hate nothing You have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of You, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (BCP 217) (From Lenten Reader: 2/25)
