Resolved: I Will Exercise My Faith Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

N

Many among us are facing very difficult circumstances right now, situations that can really lead to despair. But if you are a Christian, God has given you the gift of faith (faith to be saved and faith to believe God in all situations). Your job is to exercise it. It’s like your muscles. God just gave them to you; they are a gift. But to make them grow, you have to exercise them. The more you exercise them, the bigger and stronger your muscles will become. In the same way, faith is both a gift and a decision. Will you trust God? I am a big spiritual resolution-maker. Resolve to go to the next level of trust with Christ this year. What follows is a heavenly Q&A, in which I ask questions and God answers through His Word. As you see your life in these questions, place your faith in the Lord, who authored these answers:

orthlanders in Mount Dora are exercising their faith in Christ. When Stormie the cat got sick, her owner, Mikayla, took him to the vet. The doctor found glucose in his urine and told the family that most likely, Stormie was terminally ill. Mikayla and her mom refused to accept this and instead confidently declared that the Lord would heal Stormie. Mikayla’s whole family began to pray with fervor and trusting Q: God, will You please provide the job and hearts that God would not allow income I need? Stormie to be taken away from them. A: “My God will meet all your needs according to A week later, in a follow-up vet his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians visit, the veterinarian declared 4:19, NIV). with great surprise that the glucose in Stormie’s urine was gone, and Q: God, will You bring an end to my troubles? though Stormie would have a mild A: “I have told you these things, so that in me you urinary tract condition for the rest may have peace. In this world you will have of her days, she was out of danger trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the and would survive! Mikayla and her Mikayla Williams and Stormie. world” (John 16:33, NIV). family are praising God for His loving response to their faith-filled prayers. Q: God, will You bring someone so that I won’t be so lonely? Another man made a special offering to benefit A: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5, NIV). some Mount Dora families in need. His giving was very sacrificial, but he exercised his faith, trusted Q: God, will You show me what You want me to do? God to take care of his needs, and gave anyway. A: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock Three different families were deeply blessed as a and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7, NIV). result of his faith-filled act. Luke tells of a Roman soldier who had such a Q: God, will You please heal my marriage? strong faith in God that Jesus proclaimed, “I tell A: “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children you, I have not found such great faith even in and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Israel” (Luke 7:9, NIV). What faith is God finding at himself up for us” (Ephesians 5:1-2, NIV). Northland at Mount Dora? How about in your home?

CITRUS HARVEST FOR THE HUNGRY is a time when folks come together to serve the community by “gleaning” citrus yards and fields, and then deliver the harvested fruit immediately to needy families. This is an awesome opportunity for small groups, families and individuals to bear “good fruit” (pun intended). Sign up at www. northlandchurch.net/serve. Then, come to the church at 8 a.m. on January 23 to receive your map and assignment! PASSPORT TO THE NATIONS is a special evening where you can hear about the 26 mission trips that have been planned for 2010 and experience other cultures firsthand. On January 30 at 7 p.m., sample desserts, hear an African band and enjoy a free movie — End of the Spear, a true story about the Waodani tribe living in the Amazon Basin. Information booths will be available in the foyer the weekend of January 30 through February 1. No registration needed. It will be an amazing experience for the whole family.

Q: God, will You take away my fear? A: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment” (1 John 4:18, NIV). Q: God, will You show me my ministry to others? A: “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:5, 7, NIV). Q: God, will You help me to have more faith in You? A: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things” (Matthew 25:23, NIV). Meditate upon these Scriptures and on the passages that surround them. Claim them for yourself and speak them over your life. Have a Happy New Year and make 2010 the year in which you go to the next level of faith and trust in Christ! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

New Year Brings New Faces JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

W

e have been so blessed by the service, love, leadership and friendship of Amanda Hartley and her family, Jimmy, Abby and Nick, these last few years. Our site would not be where it is without their hard work, dedication, creativity and passion for relationships, namely with the Lord. Although we are sad to see them go, we know full well that God is directing their steps, and they are following Him to Tampa. We also know that God has a work He is doing here at Northland at Oviedo, and that He has brought us the next family that will play an integral role in that, the Sheahans. Join me in welcoming them to our family! Below is a note from Rebecca Sheahan, our new site coordinator. Dear Northland at Oviedo, I’d like to introduce myself to you. As some of you have heard already, Amanda Hartley and her family are moving to Tampa at the end of December. God has graciously brought me along and blessed me with this awesome opportunity to fill her position as Oviedo site coordinator. As always, God has been working this transition out much longer than meets the eyes. I could actually say He’s been preparing me for this ministry since I moved to Orlando from Gainesville in 2006. Following what I felt was a call from the Lord into ministry, I came to Orlando to attend Reformed Theological Seminary to get a counseling degree. However, for a while at

least, God had other plans! I started dating, got engaged and then got married to my husband, Drew, after my first semester at RTS. I planned on returning to school, but was held up by a sudden painful disc rupture a month after Drew and I were married. A scary eight months followed, until we finally found a surgeon who correctly diagnosed me and performed what would turn out to be the first of a series of yearly spinal surgeries. I was unable to work due to the repeated surgeries and their lengthy recovery periods, and was housebound for months at a time. As I was going through these last three years, God has repeatedly revealed Himself to me, teaching me to trust in His timing and His will. At certain points, I would feel discouraged and wondered why God would instill the desire for ministry in my heart, but then sequester me away from the world for months at a time! But every time I would question Him about this, He would remind me that He had plans for me, and they were plans to prosper me and not to harm me. He constantly filled me with peace and taught me patience as I waited on His will for me, since I couldn’t do anything about where I was! My being housebound led Drew and me to search for a church we could watch on Sundays together at home. This led us to Northland online, and we were so encouraged to worship with all of you here in Orlando and all over the world. It was amazing how connected we felt, even though we had never even stepped inside the church building! As I slowly recovered and started being able to go more places, we decided to try Northland “in person.” We quickly found small groups in the Oviedo area through the Northland News and were so happy to find fellowship. I started listening to old sermons from Pastor Joel while I did my physical therapy, and one day he said something that I still repeat to myself whenever I get discouraged about my physical limitations, and that phrase is this: “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” With that attitude, I started praying for a job where I could work around my physical limitations. Well, God in His perfect will placed my husband and me in the same Oviedo

5 small groups as Amanda Hartley and Michelle Smith. And the rest, as they say, is history. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be here. I know I have many challenges ahead, and that God will be refining me as I serve both Him and you. I can’t wait to get to know you personally, hear your stories, worship with you and pray for you. In Him, Rebecca Sheahan

I

t’s January 3, 2010 … 2010! Are you as amazed as I am that it’s already been 10 years since “the new millennium,” since Y2K and the many predictions of computers crashing around the world? A lot has happened in the past decade: • Computers didn’t crash on January 1, 2000. • The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred. • The Boston Red Sox finally won the World Series. • The tsunami in the Far East killed more than 100,000 people. • Hurricane Katrina struck. • The average gas price went from $1.26 to $4.12 to $2.57. • Saddam Hussein was captured and executed. • iPods were everywhere. • Social media networking took off. • We all became 10 years older. Much has happened even this year: • The Steelers won the Super Bowl. • The Yankees won the World Series. • Michael Jackson died. • Barack Obama became our first African-American president. • The economy … need I say more? • We all became one year older.

And this month: • Tiger Woods faces troubles. (Please pray for him. He’s in our community.) • Oral Roberts died. • Jimmie Johnson became the first NASCAR driver to win four Sprint Cup Championships in a row. • We all became one month older. And this week: • We went from Christmas to 2010. • Urban Meyer announced a leave as head coach of the Gators. • We all became one week older. We all know that time will continue to march on, and we’ve just seen that lots can happen without our realizing it really is marching on day to day. I wonder, instead of letting “whatever” happen, how we can take hold of our days and experience the full life that Jesus tells us about in John 10:10? “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (NIV). I believe that taking hold of our moments, our God moments, every day will help us notice that God is active in our day, and therefore we are truly living and not just existing. For example, I had a God moment this past week as my family was traveling to see snow. It was tight quarters in our car, and the natives were getting restless, so we decided to stop at the first Subway we could find. Within five minutes, we were walking into one. We were cranky and hungry, and the restaurant was closing in five minutes. As we stood in line to order, a couple walked in behind us, and at the same time, the manager turned off the “Open” light. The woman behind me struck up a conversation, in which I was not so eager to engage, but I gave in and started paying attention to her. Soon she was sharing with me that her brother had just died, and the holidays had been especially hard for her. My heart began to soften even more, and before I knew it, my whole

family and I were out in the parking lot with this woman and her elderly mother, praying for God to strengthen them. We got in the car, and my daughter, Kahley, immediately exclaimed, “Now, that was awesome!” We drove into the Subway parking lot in a cranky mood and left the same lot 15 minutes later, laughing and smiling and feeling very alive! I realized in those moments that God is alive in me and my family. It makes me ask for more God moments. I think that’s the full life Jesus is referencing. So in this next decade, year, month, week and day, what will you do to go after God and all that He has for you? I say, “Let’s spend this year going for and doing what God is calling us to do!” The West Orlando community needs to see God alive and active, and we are the ones He’s put in this area to do just that. Youths Share Faith in Bavaria BY JENNY SHAW Student Ministries Worship Coordinator

F

or many years, Northland has been cultivating and strengthening relationships with several partner churches in Southern Bavaria. In fact, since my freshman year of high school, I have frequently taken part in Distributed Journeys to this beautiful country, doing music and youth ministry alongside one of our partner churches in Oberaudorf, Germany. Over the years and through those trips, I have developed a very close friendship with Christine Faunkhauser, who regularly joins us via webstream worship and sings with our worship team whenever she is in Orlando. Though very much a part of our Northland family, Christine also is heavily involved in ministry at her home church, a small Lutheran church in Oberaudorf. Christine helped launch and develop a vibrant youth program called Jumpstart, which meets one Sunday evening a month at the church. Though Jumpstart is aimed at middle and high school-age students, recently, believers of all ages and denominations have been attending. A typical Jumpstart gathering consists of fellowship, worship and a short teaching from Christine or one of the other youth leaders. On multiple trips, I have had the privilege of helping to plan and execute Jumpstart worship nights, and they truly are a blessing to that community. Recently, Christine wrote to tell us about a pivotal learning experience that came in the form of a unique worship opportunity. This is what she had to say: The Lutheran church of Bavaria celebrated its 200th anniversary this year, so we all had a reason to celebrate. Of course, there was a big celebration one day, but the most unique thing was that the main leadership of the Bavarian Lutheran church decided to connect each congregation with a Lutheran church in a neighboring city. They did this by sending part of each congregation to lead the worship service at a different Lutheran church. It worked out that we hosted a “trombone orchestra” from a city called Trogen. The people were sweet, and we had

great conversations and a lot of fun. This weekend it was our turn. We were invited to our “partner” congregation in Dürrenzimmern (a small village between Nördlingen and Nürnberg). Günter, our pastor, decided to take the Jumpstart youth choir/band to “lead worship a little differently” (Vernon knows what I am speaking about). We were a group of 16 people: six adults and 10 students, with the youngest being Anna, who is only 12. The whole weekend was spent planning the music, readings, prayers and sermon for the worship service. We had a blast talking about our faith, sharing and getting to know each other through singing, praying and enjoying true church community. Sunday was the big day, so we left early to set up at the church. The whole service was such gift. I was crying most of the time. God touched my heart in such a special way. When the sermon came, Anna, 12; Inga, 17; Nessi, 17; and Peter, 19 each shared one of the verses, a song and their testimony. I lost it. I was so touched by the fact that those kids were able to speak about their relationship with Jesus, without any doubt, without any pressure, in their own way. After the service, of course, people said that they liked our singing, but mostly they said that they were impressed with how honest and real we were when we shared our faith. They said they had never heard anything like that before. About four to five years ago, when Northland students first came to be with us, we were not confident about our faith. We were sort of jealous of those amazing Americans who had no fear of speaking about their relationship with Christ. We saw students singing their hearts and souls out for Jesus and thought that we could never do that. But we did this past weekend! It was the Holy Spirit who led us there to be an example of His Kingdom. In essence, we went on a missionary journey without even knowing it. Keep us in your prayers. God is faithful and working in us.

Answer: HEAVENLY FATHER

Our Heavenly Father Matthew 6:9-13 God is perfect. He is the Father – always loving, guiding and protecting His children. We are God’s children; He is our heavenly Father. His Son, Jesus, said that this is how we should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done.” This prayer is saying that God is our heavenly Father. His name is holy and greatly respected. It is asking that whatever God wants to happen would be done on earth as it is done in heaven. Jesus also teaches us to ask God, our Father, to give us our daily bread, forgive us our sins, keep us from falling into sin when we are tempted, and save us from the evil one. What a perfect heavenly Father we have!

Thanks!

Keynote speaker Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah

Faith&Disability Conference January 22-23

l

Northland Church, Longwood

This free event is open to the community — people living with disabilities, families, friends, caregivers, ministry personnel across all denominations, community agencies and nonprofits, and faith-based organizations. Northland recently dropped the registration fee so that everyone can benefit from this unique gathering. The keynote speaker will be Emmanuel Yeboah. Emmanuel was born in Ghana, West Africa, with a severely disabled right leg, and his father walked out on his family in disgrace. However, his mother, fittingly named Comfort, refused to surrender to her society’s perception that disabled children are the result of a family curse or transgression. Today, Emmanuel works vigorously to ensure opportunities are available to all physically challenged Ghanaians.

GOVERNING ELDERS

BELIEVE 16

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
