Vernon Rainwater: The Rest of the Story By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations

Last weekend, many stopped by to pay tribute to our beloved worship leader. Here’s a look back at Pastor Vernon ... the early years.

ernon and Connie Rainwater will never forget the first Bible study they attended at Northland. The year was 1985, and the couple had just moved to Orlando from Greenwood, Indiana, to serve with Youth for Christ. Joel and Becky Hunter, who had also moved to the area only recently, were leading the small group in The Rink when, suddenly ... a frantic children’s ministry worker interrupted the meeting with an unsettling announcement: “There’s a rat in child care!” “Someone caught the rat, and we went on with the study,” Connie Rainwater explains, laughing. “It was quite a place back in the day.” More than two decades later, Northland’s facilities are a far cry from the derelict rollerskating center that 200 faithful congregants transformed into a house of worship. Thankfully, though, some things have stayed the same. “Vernon is the same guy I met almost 25 years ago,” Dr. Hunter says. “He’s as loving and caring as he is talented. His heart is to build up others in the Lord.”

Sleepless in Indiana If you’ve been attending Northland for very long, then you’ve probably heard Dr. Hunter talk about his early days as a senior pastor in Greenwood, Indiana, and how God began “disturbing” his heart about his next phase of ministry. What many people don’t realize is that across town, at another church in that same city, God was also stirring the heart of a youth minister named Vernon Rainwater. “I had just met Vernon before leaving for Florida,” Pastor Joel remembers. “He was the youth pastor at a nearby church a few miles from us. We met at a high school graduation ceremony. A few months later, it was totally surprising to see him in the congregation at Northland.” “Surprising” is also a good way to describe the journey that ultimately brought Vernon to Northland’s doorstep. Born in 1953 in Wilmore, Kentucky, Vernon was the youngest of three brothers, and his father was local chief of police. While he grew up in the church, he didn’t dedicate his life to Christ until 1970, during his high school years. He taught himself to play guitar and sang with a group in high school called The Good News Quartet. He met Connie in the fall of 1971 on the campus of Wilmore’s Asbury College ... you might say it was a “moving” experience. “Vernon and his buddies had a tradition of coming over to campus when the freshmen girls arrived. They would meet girls by helping them to move into their dorm rooms. So I literally met him the minute I came on Asbury’s campus,” Connie remembers. “He was kind, he was funny, he was cute ... and he was dating the daughter of the president of the college. We were ‘just friends’ for about two months before we had our first date at a Blood, Sweat & Tears concert.” In December of 1972, Vernon and Connie went to New York to ring bells for the Salvation Army. He proposed at the top of the Empire State Building. The couple married in June 1973, spending their first two and half years of marriage in Germany, where Vernon served as a chaplain’s assistant in the Vernon and Connie with daughters, U.S. Army. When they returned Claire and Mandy in 1987.

to the States, Vernon earned a degree from the University of Kentucky in social work. For six years, he served as a juvenile probation officer but was discouraged because by the time he got to kids, there was little he could do to help them. Then one night, he went to a Keith Green memorial concert in Cincinnati. “God just got a hold of his heart at that concert,” Connie says. “He knew he was supposed to make a big change. So he started talking to people he respected, and a pastor in Greenwood invited Vernon to work at his church.”

Youth for Christ Vernon served faithfully in the youth department at Community Church of Greenwood from 1983 to 1985, when he was offered the position of director of Youth for Christ in Central Florida. He and Connie moved to Orlando and started attending Northland ... just a few months after Joel and Becky Hunter’s arrival. Dick Wynn, former president of Youth for Christ, remembers the first time he met Vernon: “I immediately knew that he was a man of God. He was multitalented, and his heart for kids oozed out of the conversations that we had together. I also recognized Vernon as a leader and influencer, and for the next several years, he developed an extremely strong ministry in the Central Florida area.” Vernon also volunteered to help Northland develop its In 1990, Vernon received an student ministry program. That way, they would do the outreach, bringing other kids to church and ultimately, to faith in Jesus Christ. The results? “The first night we did youth group as volunteers in early 1986, there were 12 students. Soon, we were having hundreds— more than we could fit in the Fellowship Hall,” Connie says. In January of 1990, Vernon resigned from Youth for Christ to come on staff with Northland full time. Both then and now, Pastor Vernon wasn’t afraid to do things “a little different” each week—sometimes to the chagrin of the maintenance crew. “One time, we built a ramp and covered it with Crisco so that kids could do skiing indoors—to promote an outreach trip to Gatlinburg. Every kid wanted to try it. And, eventually, Crisco had been tracked all over The Rink,” Connie laughs. Sarah (Moss) Mattingly, who now serves on Northland’s staff, remembers with fondness her days as a high school student in Pastor Vernon’s youth group: “Vernon was such a great youth pastor because of his love for each and everyone of us individually. He had a way of making you feel like you were the only one in the room when he talked with you, which is really important to teenagers. He still makes you feel like that today.”

Lead Worshiper For many years, Vernon served both in student ministries and leading worship at the church. But as he continued to invest himself in the next generation, others began to take leadership in student ministries. “It became a gradual thing, shifting his focus from being the one who ministered to the students, to ministering to the ones who minister to the students,” Connie explains. In his current role, Connie says, the way Vernon likes to think of himself is not as the worship leader, but as the lead worshiper—willing to be transparent and worship in front of all of us. He lets us come alongside him and leads up us to the throne. “He is the person that people see up there,” she concludes. “That is who he is. And he lives what he challenges other people to live.”

his weekend we will engage in the sacrament of Holy Communion. What do you experience during the Lord’s Supper? Closeness to Christ? Connectedness to His people? I will tell you how I feel. As I preside at the table and you come, one by one, to take of the body and blood of Christ, I am keenly reminded of the love that God has for each of you. I often pray for you in my mind as you walk by and return to your seat. Paul prayed for fellow believers in this way: “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:17b-18). Though my prayers for you are not nearly as eloquent, I long for you to be washed over by the love of God – not just during Communion, and not just on Sundays. Every day. This desire for

New Year’s Resolutions JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

e make them, break them, forget them and occasionally fulfill them. Well, maybe that is more of a confession than it is a statement. Maybe there is something we, the body of Christ at Northland at Oviedo, could do about it together? What if we had accountability with each other? What if we were in relationship with one another in such a way that we knew we were praying for each other, looking out for each other, encouraging, building up and making one another better and better? That is not easy. It requires something most of us don’t have, and it’s not time; it’s relationship. I think for some of us, this is a normal part of life. We are connected to lots of people, and intentionally, we are connected to some of them in an intimate and personal enough way that we are being held accountable by them, being called on the carpet, sharpened in our personhood by them, voluntarily. We

sought them out for that very reason. Proverbs 27:17 says it this way: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” However, my sneaking suspicion is that most of us do not have any such relationship with anyone, not a friend, family member or spouse. Most of us go through life with lots of acquaintances, but very few people who could be called friends in the sense that I am describing – the kind of friends that will tell you the tough stuff in love, that will push and sometimes pull you in the right direction, mostly by example by the life they are trying to live. I heard this in a movie called “single-serving friendships,” the kind where we say, “Hi,” or, “How’s work?” or we talk about the game or the weather, but never much past that. I’d love to say it is different ‘in the church,’ but I don’t think it is. I just think the small talk is different, but it is still small talk! What I am talking about I have experienced on several occasions in my life, and I thirst and hunger for it more and more, not only for me and my family, but for every single one of you. Maggie and I have been involved in a couple of different settings like this over the years, including various groups – recovery, couples, men’s, women’s and parenting – as well as some even more intimate accountability/discipleship relationships one on

one. What I want you to know is that these have been the only places I have ever truly grown in any measurable way. There is no mystery here as to why. This was the model we were given: Jesus taught hundreds, and had 12 close to Him and three even closer, and then He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us, even closer than that! We are destined for these connections, but most of us never experience them, and yet at the same time, we ask questions like, “Why am I not growing? Why do I feel so alone and yet surrounded by people? Where is the body of Christ, and how do I fit in?” Well, maybe it’s because you are not in an environment that will make you grow. Many of us have hundreds of Facebook friends, but we have no friends that truly know our hidden face, the real us, the sinner who needs a savior. They only know the saint we try to show the world, a practice that further isolates us from the growth we so desperately yearn for, even if we don’t know it! So here is the idea: Make a new year’s resolution this year that actually might have some lasting impact … get connected! We have lots of small groups, Bible studies, classes, Neighborhood Gatherings and service opportunities coming up in January and February, and they are all great ways to enter into the process of relationship. Smaller and smaller gatherings of believers focused on Christ, being transformed into His likeness – now that is a great new year’s resolution we can all make, and hold each other accountable for, together! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Help Feed the Hungry with Citrus Grown in Local Back Yards In partnership with Society of St. Andrews, we will be gleaning the yards and fields of Orlando on Saturday, January 23. Hundreds of people are needed to serve that day. Here are the details: What is the Citrus Harvest event?

It is a day when many churches gather and send individuals, teams and families to locations around the area to glean the yards and fields of fruit and food for the hungry.

Come Near to God James 4:8 The disciple named James knew that God had made a way for all who believe in Jesus to come close to God. James said, “Come near to God, and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Make your hearts pure, you who can’t make up your minds.” James was not talking about washing our hands with water, but making the choice to stop sinning. long day of work had finally ended. The children were in bed, and I was just sitting down to put my feet up. The plan was to start reading the book I promised myself I would get to this evening. However, the quiet of the evening was disrupted when the phone rang. I picked up, and a friend who was in the midst of family problems simply started sobbing. She began to tell me the crisis she was in, and I promised I would meet her in the morning for coffee if she felt she would be okay until then. She assured me that she would, and I offered to pray with her before hanging up. I could tell she was relieved to have a friend she could turn to.

Do you often find yourself in situations like this one? Is this type of conversation commonplace in your life? Do you ever think to yourself, I would be more effective if I were equipped for these situations? If so, this might be your calling. A new session of training for Care Ministers begins on February 7. The focus of the training will be a biblical approach to the various circumstances encountered when helping others. Northland is looking for mature believers, willing to help others walk through times of pain, struggles and loss. A three-month training is provided, held on Sunday afternoons. ACCESS MINISTRIES While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. LIFEHOPE LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you.
