Doing More With a “Lot” Less By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations

eginning February 1, Northland will be closing off access to the dirt parking lot on the south side of Dog Track Road. Currently, the church leases the land at a cost
of $25,000 per year. Using one lot less for parking means more money for ministry activities at the church. “Eliminating that cost just makes sense,” explains Gary Moss, Northland’s director of facilities. “We literally do not need that lot anymore because we have been blessed with plenty of space on property—it’s just good stewardship.” Questions? Contact the church at 407-949-4000.

The Funnel
this WEEK! Greeting Card Ministry
JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e are being reminded all year about our status in the Kingdom of God, which is incredibly important if we are to be about the King and His work. In this 10-year journey, the words from the Lord’s Prayer, “thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,” are our marching orders. But they can only be marching orders for us because of who we are, because of what Christ did. Because of His sacrifice, we are adopted heirs, children of the King. That makes the marching orders real, powerful, and personal. We are to be about our Father’s business. In this week’s main verses, Ephesians 2:17-22, Paul tells us that because Christ came and preached peace to the near and far, we have access to the Father, and because of that, we are no longer foreigners and aliens, but citizens and members of God’s household. Wow, that is powerful. Who we are has been completely changed. We are no longer just Mike, Mary, Dave or Diane; we are members of His family, sons and daughters of the King. I’d like to make two points. First, we are who we are because of the foundation we are built on, the apostles and the prophets, with Christ Jesus as the chief Cornerstone. To appreciate and understand this, and live this out, we must know who they
were, what they said, what they were about. This is why we study the Word of God. I want everyone to be studying the Scriptures every day. But there is more to it than you and your Bible, and it is in the next line. The second point: In the very next line, it says we are being built “together” to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit. So community, family, connectedness is essential, not optional. And as a result of that connection, we become a holy dwelling in which God lives. That is the heart of why we do everything here. From the Sunday worship experience to fellowship gatherings and even service projects, there is always an ulterior motive: getting you into closer and more intimate relationships with each other. As that happens, we pray that those relationships will result in the study of God’s Word together. As that happens, we wait expectantly for the goal: one-on-one discipleship, mentoring and life-changing accountability, with Christ transforming relationships. That’s the funnel – from the most disconnected point of the community at large into the more connected Sunday worship experience congregation and further into committed relationships that result in a core connection to God and to each other. So there it is; you are in the funnel, even if you don’t realize it. It’s not my funnel; it is His. Remember, Paul told us we are no longer foreigners and aliens, but citizens and children because of Christ. Then Paul says we are built together to become holy dwelling places of God. Join us in 2010 as we continue in this journey … together! If you are getting this for the first time and want in, come to the Forum in the Foyer next weekend to learn about all the connection opportunities this spring.
“As a result of … connection, we become a holy dwelling in which God lives. That is the heart of why we do everything here.”

westoaksnews Freeze Warning Ministry Warms Homeless TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
A
week ago this past Tuesday, a dream became reality for the Church of West Orange. Several leaders involved had been strategizing about how to provide shelter, food and warmth for the homeless who would take them up on the offer when the weather fell toward freezing temperatures. Well, the Freeze Warning Ministry melted into reality. Thanks so much to the Church of Christ of West Orange (at 1450 Daniels Road, south of Highway 50) for providing the facilities for shelter. Thanks to Next Community, St. Pauls, the Bread of Life Ministry and those of you at West Oaks who took part in making it happen. The freezing temperatures will continue to be a possibility for the next two or three months, so we have an “on-call” system of sorts to be ready when the forecast calls for the temperatures to fall. If you would like to volunteer for any part of this ministry in the near future by spending the night at the shelter, setting up, cleaning up, serving food, doing laundry afterward (blankets and pillowcases) or doing anything else you can think of, e-mail Larry Black (LBlack2666@aol.com), whom I am so excited about, as he and Kathy have been a driving force behind the scenes of this ministry. Also, listed below you can see the different churches that are involved and take note of our part (West Oaks), headed
up by Richard Connell. Here is a breakdown of how it stands now: • Next Community – supper, back-up for other items • Southwest Church – laundry • Northland at West Oaks – supper • St. Pauls Presbyterian – clothes and possibly cleanup • Church of Christ of West Orange – host shelter for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well as storage • Bread of Life – food supply needs • Westpoint Church – breakfast and toiletries Note: There will be a meeting for those interested in learning more about how to help the homeless or who want to be trained more specifically for the Freeze Warning Ministry. This training will take place today, January 17 at 4 p.m. on the campus of St. Pauls Presbyterian. Also note: If you know of an organization that might want to participate to provide shelter, please let us know. We still need shelter lined up to be “on call” for Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Thanks so much. One more thing: We need pillows that have a plastic covering (like the ones used in hospitals). You can get them at Wal-Mart. E-mail me (tommy.novak@northlandchurch.net) if you are able to supply any. Please be praying for this amazing ministry to truly love and serve those without a warm place to rest for the night in cold temperatures. Thanks again for being the church in so many ways to our community. The heart of Christ is evident in so many of you! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Someday is Today
Passport to the Nations: Friday, January 29 “It is time to connect, grow and go.” – Dr. Joel C. Hunter BY pattI harshey Northland Distributed Journeys Administrator, Service
A
s the distributed church, we are called to move out and connect with and minister to people like never before. We have learned that the church is wherever two or more Christians are gathered, whether in Longwood; Khayelitsha, South Africa; or Kiev, Ukraine. God has blessed Northland with incredible partners around the world who are working day in and day out among those who are the outcast, the poor and the lost. With our partners, we are able to change lives and be transformed ourselves through the ministry that takes place on our short-term mission trips, our Distributed Journeys. There is unlimited potential for impacting and improving the circumstances of
others when we humble ourselves before God. He will use us, even with our vulnerabilities and frailties, activating and distributing us for His service to His people. Our unfounded doubts and excuses only serve the enemy. Have you heard yourself say, “Someday when I have enough money; someday when my kids don’t need me so much; someday when I’m a better Christian; someday when I have something to contribute; someday when I have more vacation time; someday when I get over my fear of flying; someday when the economy is better, then I’ll go”? Someday is today. Start 2010 with a commitment to serve others. An excellent service opportunity awaits you on one of the 26 Distributed Journeys planned for 2010. Join us Friday, January 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in our Longwood foyer to learn about the exciting trips planned this year and how you can become part of a team that will bring the hands, feet and heart of Jesus to a hurting world and that will impact your life in ways you never imagined. During the evening, as you meet others who have served on a Distributed Journey and find out how you can be a part of one this year, you will be treated to delicious desserts and music from an African-themed band. To top off the evening, there will be a free showing of the movie End of the Spear (rated PG-13) on the big screen in the sanctuary starting at 7:45 p.m. The
film is the true story of the Waodani Tribe, a fierce group of warriors on the brink of extinction due to revenge killings, and the missionaries who risk everything trying to share the Gospel with them. Some of last year’s team members had this to say: “In everything we did, serving was as simple as being present and sharing ourselves and God’s love with the people we met.” — Laura Y. “What I realized was that everyone on our team was just an ordinary person but had something to give. Everyone has something to give. That’s all we need. Just to love and to serve.” — Elaine B. “A journey like this is hard to understand unless you experience it for yourself. Until you can get away from what is normal, until you can hold a child in your arms, until you see a life changed, you won’t understand how much your life can be changed as well.” — Stan S. “Why am I doing this? Because I believe now more than ever that God is active all over the world, and He has invited each of us into His work, here and there.” — Jeremy J. “Telling people about a Distributed Journey is okay, but nothing compares to having the experience. You’re just never the same after.” — Stephanie W.
Join us. Make someday today.

Sports Ministry Forming BY Brent Tallman Sports Ministry Coordinator
T
hank you to God who is able to do infinitely more than we could ever ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). At our first meeting, we had 43 people turn out from at least five different churches. We had tremendous encouragement from Northland’s Pastor Gus Davies, Dr. Joel C. Hunter, James Li, Brian Katauskas, Rudy Tamez and Emily Tallman. We learned about the “why” of sports ministry and coming up next is learning about the “how.” Every single one of you can get involved. We need prayer warriors! If you are interested in further involvement in the Sports Ministry, and you’d like to hear about “how” we are going to go about doing it, or you have questions, thoughts or concerns, contact me, Brent Tallman (brent@wantoksports.org).
February 19, 7 p.m. The Rink, Northland at Longwood To enter (high school bands only), e-mail music demo and lyrics by February 5 to: o2studentministries@gmail.com For more information, click on the events tab at: facebook.com/NorthlandRink
Brent Tallman discusses the “why” behind creating a Sports Ministry.

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to the Beehive! I’m Buzz. Stick with me during our family worship service, and we’ll learn more about who God is and what He has done!
Today we worship God for His goodness to us. He shows us we belong to Him. When we gather with others in God’s family to sing praises to Him, that’s worship.

Answer: BELONGING
Belonging Ephesians 2:17-22 If you believe in Jesus, you belong to God’s family. Through Jesus, you come to God the Father by the power of His Holy Spirit. So you are no longer strangers and outsiders. You are citizens together with God’s people. You are members of God’s family. Each family member adds something special to the whole family. You are like a building that is built on the apostles and prophets. They are the foundation. Jesus is the most important stone in the building. The whole building is held together by Him. It rises to become a holy temple because it belongs to the Lord. And because you belong to Him, you are also being built together. You are being made into a house where God lives through His Spirit.
I belong with you.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Building Heaven-Like “Families” A Sense of Belonging Scripture focus:
Ephesians 2:17-22 (NASB)
................................................................................................................................................
AND HE CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND PEACE TO THOSE WHO WERE NEAR; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
Worship focus: .......................................................................
Worship God today for His goodness to us, for every good gift and every perfect gift comes from Him. He is the Author of, the definition of, and the standard for all that is good. (James 1:17)
Summary prayer: .......................................................................
Father, thank You for Your goodness. Out of Your goodness You drew near to us, sending Your Son to save us. Out of the same overflowing goodness, You give us families, communities and friends. Impute Your nature to us, so that while we have the opportunity, we might do good to all people (Galatians 6:10). Help us to make our families a reflection of Your goodness, as we learn and demonstrate what it means to belong to each other and to You. Accomplish Your purposes in the world, using Your children as ambassadors of Your goodness everywhere, every day.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Building Heaven-like “Families” | An Attitude of Respect | 1 Peter 2:17
