Update: Haiti Disaster Response Team Safe Following Aftershock By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Public Relations
A
team of 100 responders from Central Florida, 17 of them from Northland, arrived in Miami on Monday. They went into Haiti in shifts—some were on the ground when Wednesday’s 6.1 aftershock came, but all team members are well. In fact, they are blessing people everywhere they go— even as many worked and slept in an airplane hanger as they waited for clearance to depart to Haiti. “The work that has been accomplished in Miami is amazing,” reports Debbie Hanley, who volunteers as the administrative coordinator for Northland’s Disaster Response Team. “There were so many supplies that the team had to move their beds back into a corner. They painted a yellow line in the hanger ... the ongoing joke was that they had to ‘sleep behind the yellow line.’” Over the next several months, you can make a difference right here by giving and participating in serving various projects. Last weekend, a total of $61,512 was donated to help Haiti. All money will be sent directly to our partners, including New Missions, Kids Against Hunger, Islego Mission, and others. You can also help sort, package and organize donations with Harvest Time International. Additionally, in partnership with Kids Against Hunger, you can help package meals that will go directly into the hands of hurting Haitians. More
than 50,000 meals will be packaged and shipped to Haiti each month over the next several months. Later, there will be opportunities with Islego Mission and New Missions to go to Haiti on construction/clean-up crews. If you are interested, make sure your passport is current and your shots are up to date. Also, please email Patti Harshey (patti.harshey@northlandchurch.net), so that you can be contacted as trips begin to open up. Most of all, please continue to pray for the people of Haiti and for those serving in that country, including those from Northland: Beth Bogden, Christy Braqman, Dodi Huang-Hellinger, Gretchen Kerr, Kim Kilgore, Mary Ann Mannen, Kim Morledge, James Price, Michele Rigaud, Darin Shaler, Guy Sier, Ruth Sier, John Tardonia, Joel Timyan, Lois Timyan, Renee Tyler and Jeff Young. To get involved, click on the Help Haiti button at www. northlandchurch.net, or contact Vanessa Puleo (vanessa. puleo@northlandchurch.net or 407-949-7156). o you love Jesus? Christ Himself asked Peter that question. “‘Simon son of John, do you truly love me?’ He answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep’” (John 21:16, NIV). The Lord told Peter to show his love for God by loving people. He said, “Take care of my sheep.” Our love for the Lord is demonstrated by our love for others. A good friend of mine shared about a big advancement he had made in his spiritual walk. Early on in his Christian life, he required no distractions during his “quiet time” with God. When his young children interrupted him, he became frustrated and angry. But later on, he realized that interruptions like that were actually opportunities for him to take a break, engage them and in so doing, show the love of God to his kids! Jesus wants the world to taste of His love. And that taste will come as you and I step out and serve the people around us! How can you and I take care of Jesus’ sheep? We can serve them; that’s how! We in Mount Dora have so many pathways to service. Do you love children? Why not give some time to the “least of these” and serve in the Mount Dora Children’s Ministry or at The Carpenter’s House for Children? Do you enjoy setting the stage so that others can worship? Mount Dora’s Setup and Takedown team might be perfect for you. Do you love receiving a warm greeting
at Church? How about joining our Greeting Team. Has God gifted you with resources? Why not make a special offering to Debbie’s Doorstep or the Mount Dora Love Collection? There are so many ways you can serve people – and in so doing you serve Christ! Why not resolve in 2010 to serve Jesus like you never have before. The following folks in Mount Dora can get you connected and equipped to serve Jesus: Mount Dora Children’s Ministry: Tanya Carpenter (tcarpenter@cfl.rr.com or 352-735-3832) Carpenter’s House for Children: Ann South (south4@comcast.net or 352-267-3388) Setup and Takedown Team: John Tucker (wyoming01@earthlink.net or 321-438-9961) Mount Dora Greeting Team: Frances Merritt (jasonandfrances@comcast.net or 407-554-0076 Debbie’s Doorstep: Kelly Verkaik (kellyverkaik@mac.com or 407-310-5355) Mount Dora Love Collection: Ann South (south4@comcast.net or 352-267-3388) Love Jesus by serving His sheep! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

That is directly related to how well I am engaged in the family I am in amily” is a tough word for some and because of Christ, and how much time I am spending with a comforting word for others, but as my heavenly Father learning about our family, studying our Pastor Joel has been sharing with us, it is history so that I can better understand who we are, what we nonetheless a reality for all of us who have been are about, our passions, purposes and so on. westoaksnews Serving Families in Haiti TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
R
ecently, I talked with Jodi Severe, a part of our West Oaks family, and here is her story, in her own words, about how she and her husband, Hugues, have dealt with this tragedy. As I sit down to write this, words are difficult to come by. We live in America, but our hearts are in Haiti. Our hearts break along with theirs. I picture the faces of those we love, and while we know they are alive, we also know they suffer. My husband, Hugues, is from Haiti and lived there for the past year and a half, only returning home this past October. During this time, God gave us the opportunity to found a nonprofit ministry in the area of Massey, Haiti, a community near the southern city of Les Cayes. Grain d’Espoir pour Haiti Inc. provides educational tuition for children in the area. We believe that the future of Haiti lies with the children and that to educate a child strengthens the country one life at a time. We currently have 18 children in our program. These children are so very close to our hearts. When we heard news of the earthquake, I sank to my knees, the full impact of what had just happened overwhelming me. Our family cried together as we immediately began trying to contact family still living in Haiti. For two days, we tried every means possible – phone, texts and Internet. Occasionally, the phone would ring on the other end, and
our hearts would jump, only for the call to go dead. We networked with other family members living in the United States, all of us praying someone would get through. Finally, on Thursday morning, we heard through another family member that Hugues’ parents and two brothers are okay. Hugues’ brother lost everything. He has been living on the streets of Port-au-Prince for three days, determined to stay and try to save lives. Today, as I write this, he is attempting to reach Les Cayes, about 140 miles west of Port-au-Prince, as the conditions in the capital have become unlivable. Many friends are still missing. Many are still searching for family. We praise the Lord that our family is safe. We praise the Lord that the children in our program are safe. We praise the Lord for the opportunity to be able to serve them in this time of need. Grain d’Espoir pour Haiti Inc. is assessing the needs in Massey as they become apparent and will be organizing a relief effort. The structural damage in this area is minimal, but food shortages are already occurring. When the initial relief work in Port-au-Prince is finished and the country opens again to commercial flights, we will be making a trip into southern Haiti to provide whatever means of relief we can. Our hearts ache to serve those we love in the country that has so touched our lives. We pray that God will reveal to us the best way to serve the people of Haiti, to join in their suffering and bring them hope. For more information, visit www.graindespoirhaiti.com. Please continue to pray for all of those who desperately need our prayers. Thanks for being the church at this time. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

To top off the evening, there will be a free showing of the feature film End of the Spear (rated PG-13) in the sanctuary on the big screen starting at 7:45 p.m. In End of the Spear, which is based on a true story, worlds collide and tragedy strikes as a missionary group journeys to the heart of the Amazon jungle in search of the Waodani, a tribe of fierce warriors on the brink of extinction due to revenge killings. When five of the missionary men are speared to death by a group of tribesmen led by a fierce warrior, their families are left husbandless and fatherless. Undeterred by their tremendous loss and spurred on by hope, the families decide to remain in Ecuador, and risk living among the Waodani. But the effects of that first encounter have yet to subside: A young boy, struggling to unlock the secret of his father’s death, must learn to accept a tragedy he cannot change in this powerful story of sacrifice, courage and redemption.
Questions? Advocates will be at every country’s station to answer them.
You will be greeted by a giant globe as you enter the building.

There will be great musical entertainment.

Next Local Serve Day — January 30
WHAT IS A LOCAL SERVE DAY? That’s when we meet at Northland in parking lot 3 and distribute to one of the many projects in the community, or to help one of our local partners. Painting, landscaping, sorting food at a pantry … many projects are available. It’s a great opportunity to get the whole family involved. All ages are welcome!
Someday is today.
Ask Pastor Gus Davies about the trips he thinks might interest you.
Be a Missionary in Your Own Home
Host a Japanese college student in March Mission To Japan, a Northland supported ministry, is bringing a group of Japanese college students to Orlando to study English, learn about the Bible, and go sightseeing March 2 through 30. The program allows Mission To Japan to share the Gospel with Japanese students who know little about Christianity. Host families are needed to make a student a part of their family for the month (students will be away on a retreat during spring break March 8 to 12). Mission To Japan will take care of the students during the day by providing English and Bible classes, and by taking the students sightseeing. Host families are needed to provide a room, some meals, and a loving Christian home. Host families simply drop their student off at Northland by 9:15 a.m. each weekday, and pick up their student in the early evenings. A host family orientation is provided to help you have a great experience. Why not take a step of faith and allow your whole family to be part of a mission opportunity to share the love of Christ with a student from Japan? Unscramble the letters below to see what Peter called the men, women and children who believed in Jesus.
DOOTHORBHER FO SREVIELEB B_ _ _H_ _ _O_ _ _ _ B_ _ _ _V_ _ _ Answer: BROTHERHOOD OF BELIEVERS
Show Respect to Everyone 1 Peter 2:17 Peter had a name for the group of men, women and children who believed in Jesus. He called them the “brotherhood of believers.” If you believe in Jesus, you belong to this brotherhood of believers. Today the brotherhood is called “the church,” “the family of God,” “Christians” or “the body of Christ.” Peter told the people who believed in Jesus to live like people who serve God. He said, “Show proper respect to everyone. Love the brotherhood of believers. Have respect for God. Honor the king.” God wants us to treat all people of all faiths with respect. He wants us to love His family and to respect Him as the Lord of all. God also wants us to honor the people He puts in charge of us. In Peter’s case, the person in charge was a king.
I respect that.
Draw a picture of yourself showing respect to someone whom God has put in charge of you.

Is There More to Life Than This?
Y
ou are invited to participate in the next Alpha Course at Northland at Longwood on Sundays, February 14 through May 16 from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. in the Student Ministries and Care Center building, room 1118/16, hosted by Pastor Gus Davies and team. Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for anyone who thinks there may be more to life than meets the eye and is searching for deeper meaning. People from all backgrounds, religions and viewpoints gather to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, who Jesus is, why He died, His claims and more. Some want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes their lives. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that often are built during the course. What happens at Alpha? Each week you will find yourself in a relaxed, friendly setting where we will enjoy a meal together, laugh and learn and where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too
hostile. After the meal, there is a short talk, which looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith each week and is the springboard for the small group discussions that follow. In these groups, all are welcome to contribute their opinions and ask questions. People usually stay in the same small groups for the duration of the course to get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. The emphasis is on exploration and discovery. Alpha includes an amazing one-day or weekend retreat, which you will not want to miss! How do I sign up? To register, visit www.northlandchurch.net, select “Get Equipped,” click on “Join a Connection Group” and then “Alpha Essentials Course.” The fee of $10 per person or $15 per couple covers your book (available at the class) and weekend expenses. To explore more about Alpha, check out the Alpha USA website (www.alphausa.org). Click on “Find a Course” in the upper right of that web page to find out about other alpha courses going on in different areas of the United States. Registration for Alpha is required. RELEVANT READS for Passport to the Nations

elow are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that will inspire you to go on a Distributed Journey.
Cross-Cultural Servanthood, by Duane Elmer Cross-cultural specialist Duane Elmer gives Christians practical advice for serving other cultures with sensitivity and humility. The reader embarking on a mission trip will find this essential reading to serve effectively in international settings. Peace Child, by Don Richardson This new edition contains an epilogue bringing readers up to date with the Sawi people of Irian Jaya, New Guinea. In 1962, the author and his wife brought the message of the Gospel to headhunting cannibals in the area. Serving With Eyes Wide Open, by David Livermore Become a more effective crosscultural minister by opening your eyes to global realities and Western assumptions about shortterm missions. Let the Nations Be Glad!, by John Piper This book has provided thousands of missionaries, pastors and church leaders with a biblical basis for missions. Piper now offers a revised and expanded 10th anniversary edition of this sound, readable and passionate defense of God’s supremacy in all things.
Bruchko, by Bruce Olson What happens when a 19-year-old boy leaves home and heads into the jungles to evangelize a murderous tribe of South American Indians? For Bruce Olson, it meant capture, disease, terror, loneliness and torture. This revised version of Olson’s story is a reminder that simple faith in Christ can make anything possible. Through Gates of Splendor, by Elisabeth Elliot After several preliminary overtures of friendship, five young missionary men set out on a crucial January day in 1956 for a meeting with the Auca tribesmen who had reacted with apparent tolerance to earlier gifts and messages. This is the poignant story of their martyrdom told by the widow of one of the slain members of the group. End of the Spear, by Steve Saint Asked to return to Ecuador by the same tribe that killed his father and other missionaries 40 years earlier, Saint and his family try to help a Stone Age people transition to the 21st century. Their efforts lead to the discovery of the tribal intrigue behind the murders, resulting in very difficult decisions.

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Building Heaven-Like “Families” An Attitude of Respect Scripture focus:
1 Peter 2:17 (NASB)
................................................................................................................................................
Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
Worship focus: .......................................................................
Worship God today for His goodness to us, for every good gift and every perfect gift comes from Him. He is the author of, the definition of and the standard for all that is good. (James 1:17)
Summary prayer: .......................................................................
Father, thank You for Your goodness. Out of Your goodness, You drew near to us, sending Your Son to save us. Out of the same overflowing goodness, You give us families, communities and friends. Impute Your nature to us, so that while we have the opportunity, we might do good to all people (Galatians 6:10). Help us to make our families a reflection of Your goodness, as we learn and demonstrate love and respect to those closest to us. Make us constantly mindful of who we are together, of our mission, and of the unique contribution that each person brings to our identity as a family. Accomplish Your purposes in the world, using Your children as ambassadors of Your goodness everywhere, every day.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Building Heaven-like “Families” | Conflict Resolution | Isaiah 1:18
