Making a Difference: 2009 Year in Review MICHAEL VAN HUIS Northland Executive Director Service
I
spent time at the end of 2009 looking back and reflecting on what God has allowed us as Northlanders to do for His Kingdom around the world. I have to say I was left pretty amazed at the breadth and depth of involvement in multiple areas of ministry. The impact from Northland can literally be traced across the globe from participating in clothing drives in Longwood to assisting ethnic reconciliation in Sri Lanka. God has facilitated ministry through our giving and serving to see lives radically changed and impacted. Last year was phenomenal, and I suspect that in 2010, we will go to a whole new level of service as a family in partnership to serve others.
Local Service 2009 Serving the Community On 43 out of 52 weeks, serve teams were sent into our community. During those weeks, 3,129 people served, which was an increase of 500 people from 2008. These 3,129 people took part in 175 projects that constituted more than 16,000 hours of service to Central Florida! These hours of service included feeding the homeless and people in need through community outreach events, Join a Local Project Day.
renovating houses, working with local ministry partners and serving other organizations throughout our community. In 2009, Northland donated $182,300 to 30 local ministries and organizations. As a congregation, we also collected and gave away 14,401 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, 14,800 pounds of food, 2,430 bags of clothing and 1,995 backpacks for children in need! This is incredible. We are hoping to see increases in all those areas in 2010 as we learn to be stretched in our giving. Each year we keep giving away more and meeting more needs throughout Central Florida, which is simply awesome. Serving in the Prison We also have established an amazing presence at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County and the Orange County Jail as we webstream the service into these facilities, and are mentoring and working with inmates who are preparing to transition back into the Concurrent worship at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in community. Over the course of Seminole County. the year, 5,149 men (50 to 100 at a time) rotated through the worship services at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, and 948 men (30 to 40 at a time) have opted for special mentoring on Wednesday mornings. At the Orange County Jail, 575 women have worshiped (25 at a time), 1,352 women (26 at a time) have taken part in Celebrate Recovery in the prison, and 260 women (five at a time) have gone through individual counseling sessions. Disaster Response Team Info: • More than 560 people from the congregation have registered to be a member of the Northland Disaster Response Team. • Six teams have been established, providing a place for each and every member to serve: Kitchen Team Medical Team

Focus on Christ JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

family environment is not the easiest place to be like Christ. Why? Friction! Newton’s first law of friction states that the frictional force of two dry surfaces that come into contact with each other is proportional to their normal reaction, or the force that holds them together, and is dependent on the nature of the surfaces themselves. Okay, let me try to say that another way: The frictional force between two objects is directly related to what is holding them together and their very nature. Hmm … I think I see something in physics that might help us answer that question better, and as is almost always the case with God, it is quite a paradox. The first piece that contributes to the “frictional force” is their normal reaction, or the force that holds the two objects together. For example, Velcro has a strong normal reaction; the force holding it together is great. With people, the force holding them together can be great or little: a parent-child or biological tie, a wedding ring or a sibling relationship; or a shared cubical, fence in the yard, or favorite coffee shop. But because of the second piece, their very nature as sinful creatures in a sinful, fallen world, this gets all out of whack, and high friction can be the result in each and every setting, regardless of the bond. Their connection to each other is distorted in its potential because of their very nature.
NEXT WEEKEND! Movie Under the Stars! But what if their very nature has been drastically changed? Romans 7 and Ephesians 2 talk deeply about this being the case for the family of God, that our old nature has been replaced by Christ Himself, through His blood, “that … He might make … one new man, thus establishing peace” (Ephesians 2:15, NASB). So now the nature of the individuals is radically different; it is Christ Himself and works against this natural tendency, our flesh, to create friction. What about the force holding them together? The natural bonds we listed above that make families are replaced by a new bond that has been made in Christ and fundamentally changes everything. The force that binds them together is now Christ Himself. In John 17, Christ says we are united in Him, and He is love, so we are to be united in Him in love for one reason, so that the world will know He was sent. John 13:35 says, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (NASB). Psalm 133 and Ephesians 4 describe the importance of our unity in love. Colossians 3:14 says it this way: “Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” The perfect bond of unity is love, and our very nature has been changed, so now the laws of friction in the natural world are upside down; the change to our bond and our nature make us more compatible and less frictional. But we are still here and in the flesh, so this is not automatic. The physics of this formula are simple: The greater the distance between any family member and Christ, the greater the potential for friction, and the closer we get to Him, the less friction there will be. Don’t focus on not making friction; focus on Christ, and there will be less friction because our nature and our bond are different.
Christ says we are united in Him, and He is love, so we are to be united in Him in love for one reason, so that the world will know He was sent.

westoaksnews Freeze Warning Ministry Gets New Name: Matthew’s Hope TOMMY NOVAK Northland at West Oaks Site Minister
A
s the Freeze Warning Ministry experienced true ministry a few weeks ago, impacting many lives, the awareness of a bigger vision began to take shape. After the first few weeks of serving the homeless right here in the West Oaks area, many of you saw the need for more opportunities to serve those who are in hard times and dealing with very tough situations, and not just during cold weather. So a few folks gathered and talked about living out the passage from Matthew 25:35-40 (NIV, emphasis added): “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?” The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew’s Hope is now taking on a life of its own, and Freeze Warning is a part of the bigger picture of living out this passage on a daily basis. There are still many ways to
volunteer to serve in this ministry and get involved in loving those around us. Larry Black and Richard Connell are still leading in the Freeze Warning part of this ministry, so make sure you stop and talk with them about how you can get involved. But there are other ways of helping! Already you have brought in supplies that have made a difference for those in need, and I encourage you to continue bringing things in as you can. Here is a list of needed items Matthew’s Hope has given us: space bags, storage bags, clear storage bins, work boots, new and slightly used shoes, new socks and underwear, men’s jeans (smaller sizes, 30, 32, 34, 36), wet wipes, firstaid kits, work gloves, bike tube repair kits, large tents, tarps, hygiene supplies, feminine supplies, air mattresses, trench shovels, propane stoves, folding canvas chairs, plastic utensils, bow saws, batteries (C, D and 9V), flashlights (crank or solar), radios, cast iron or aluminum pots and pans, toilet paper, paper towels, insect spray (Raid), mosquito repellent, citronella candles, Visqueen, bottled water, large trash bags, five-gallon buckets, backpacks and pet cages. This list of supplies is a list we can collect over time, but our desire is to give Matthew’s Hope the supplies they need to serve in ways they have been called to serve. If you have any questions about this ministry or how you can give, please e-mail me anytime, and I will be happy to respond. This is just another way you are being the church to this community. It would be incredible to overwhelm this ministry with our love and passion for Christ. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Year in Review
for Christ’s Hope International in Germany. We also had a Northland staff team visit Tim and Annette Gulick in Argentina in September, providing teaching and care for their new Youth Institute ministry, a fully accredited program for youth ministry leaders and pastors in South America.
(Continued from page 4.)
Missionaries In the course of 2009, we supported 73 different missionary units that are serving in 24 different countries (including the United States) with 34 different mission agencies. Seven of those missionary units were receiving Northland support for the first time. We also were able to be part of the coaching and sending out of four new missionary units to the field, including Aileen Agoncillo to Southeast Asia, the Davidsons to Africa, the Voytenkos to Ukraine, and a fourth couple to India. Eleven overseas missionaries visited Northland during the year, and we were able to care for a couple of them over longer periods of time as they rested and prepared to go back to the field. We also sent two Distributed Journey teams to work directly with missionaries on the field, helping to establish new ministry ground in Italy and working on the construction of a mission headquarters Tim and Annette Gulick.
Distributed Journeys Twenty-three teams of Northlanders left to travel the world to 11 countries: Brazil, Ukraine, South Africa, Egypt, Dominican Republic, Swaziland, Germany, Poland, Cuba, Sri Lanka and Italy. We also had teams travel domestically to Alabama and Wisconsin. There were 285 participants, of which 38 were non-Northlanders, and 20 of those were not from Central Florida. They came from Germany, Georgia, New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, Maryland, and our partners in Ukraine and Egypt. This was our first year that a multi-partner team of 12 Ukrainians and 15 Americans went to Sri Lanka to serve the orphans and widows that our Sri Lankan partners are serving. Other highlights include: • Kristen Urichko (daughter of Pastor Kevin and Linda Urichko), who went on a soccer outreach team to Brazil, was interviewed on Brazilian TV. • A woman who had been ministered to for five years by teams going to Swaziland finally said she could no longer resist it and gave her life to Christ. • Also in Swaziland, a woman who was a longtime practitioner of voodoo gave it up and accepted Christ. • The Egypt team washed the feet of the Sudanese refugees to show them how much the team members value God.
• The team that went to Sri Lanka took part in an ethnic reconciliation conference that has started a youth movement toward reconciliation within that is spreading across that country. Global Partnerships A total of $652,000 was sent out for ministry to 14 countries: Indonesia, Argentina, Germany, India, Botswana, China, Namibia, Sudan, Uganda, Cuba, Algeria, Ukraine, Egypt and Sri Lanka. This allowed new work to take place in unreached people groups in North Africa, the Amazon, North Sudan, Yemen and Botswana. Orphans and widows were cared for, new churches were established, and young pastors and church planters were trained and equipped for ministry. We were able to partner in Egypt to see thousands come to Christ in November through an outreach festival, and take part in reconciliation efforts in both Sri Lanka and South Africa. God is at work around the globe in amazing ways, and this is just a glimpse of the results that are taking place from our investment into the growth of the Kingdom of God. On a final note, Northland was able to harness the technology that we use each weekend to reach thousands through webstream worship from Central Florida to see our partners in Egypt be equipped with the same technology. Now Kasr El Dobara Evangelical Church in Cairo, Egypt, is able to webstream its services in Arabic to those who are Arabic speakers around the globe! The church’s big launch was at its January 1 service that had 1,300 people webstreaming from 10 different countries! Praise God! We are praying that God will allow us to do this with churches in other main language groups over the next few years, and specifically with our partners in Ukraine to the Russian-speaking world and possibly Argentina to the Spanish-speaking world in 2010. Answer: DISAGREEMENT
Solving Conflicts Isaiah 1:18 Nations disagree. People disagree. Family members disagree. God wants us to work out our disagreements. It is not wrong to disagree with others, but it is wrong to disrespect others. When you disagree, be sure to listen well to what the other person is saying. You may agree on more than you think you do. If you disagree about a choice that must be made, remember to cooperate. If you are wronged, remember to forgive just as the Lord forgives you. Jesus died so your sins would be forgiven. Isaiah tells us that the Lord says, “Even though your sins are like scarlet (bright red), they will be as white as snow. Even though they are like crimson (deep red), they will be white like wool.”
Scarlet is a bright red color.
Draw a picture of you and a family member cooperating during a disagreement.

Ash Wednesday Tradition
Lenten Groups
I
T
n recent years, Ash Wednesday has become a favorite element of Northland’s Lenten season. This traditional day of fasting and confession begins the season we know as Lent – the 40 days prior to Easter. A traditional Ash Wednesday service culminates with the traditional imposing of ashes, as each participant passes before an officiant to receive ashes on his or her forehead in the sign of a cross, along with the words from Genesis 3:19: You are made from dust and to dust you will return. While this may seem like a rather morbid practice for us who focus so often on God’s grace, it can be an honest, powerful reminder of how much we need that grace. The use of sackcloth and ashes as a sign of mourning or deep repentance goes back more than 3,000 years and involved many cultures. Sackcloth was an uncomfortable garment made from goat’s hair. Ashes were a symbol of great personal remorse. We have come to associate them with Job: “Therefore I retract, and I repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:6, NASB). Sackcloth and ashes are referenced throughout the Bible nearly
100 times from Genesis to Revelation. The custom of prayer, fasting and ashes was a practice of the early Hebrews, as in Daniel 9:3. The very early Christian church encouraged the use of sackcloth and ashes for the same symbolic reasons. New converts in early Rome would receive the ashes on Ash Wednesday and be made to dress in sackcloth until Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter. Much later Christian churches continued to think about how best to use the symbolism of ashes. Though sometimes practiced privately during this period, ultimately it became a public practice, but instead of sprinkling ashes on the head, ashes were rubbed onto the forehead in the shape of a cross. Marking the forehead with a cross of ashes was a sign of repentance and a reminder of the penitent’s baptism. While these rituals are not required of the church, they can be powerful reminders of all that Christ has done for us. Don’t miss this year’s Ash Wednesday service, February 17 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at Northland at Longwood. Child care will be available for children age 5 and under.

his time of year, people around the world seem to be especially mindful of peace, but knowing how to approach conflict is difficult for all of us. The PeaceSeeker Ministry team is offering a newly revised six-week class, which began January 10. Come and learn to approach others in a spirit of reconciliation, and steward conflict in a way that honors God and brings peace! Details: Gary Wright (lanaharrison@cfl.rr.com)

he upcoming church-wide study 2 Stories will provide a very natural time for people to gather and experience the Lenten season together. Child care will be available for children in fifth-grade and younger. FAMILY Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Building Heaven-Like “Families” Conflict Resolution Scripture focus:
Isaiah 1:18 (NASB)
................................................................................................................................................
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.”
Worship focus: .......................................................................
Worship God today for His goodness to us, for every good gift and every perfect gift comes from Him. He is the author of, the definition of and the standard for all that is good. (James 1:17)
His goodness to me: Jesus, out of Your goodness, You have redeemed me.
His goodness through me: Help me to show Your forgiveness to those around me.
His goodness in my family: Show me how to demonstrate Your love and forgiveness to my family, and help us to forgive others in response to Your mercy.
His goodness to my world: Make us instruments of Your mercy to the world.
NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Building Heaven-like “Families” | Kindness and Severity | Romans 11:22
