Come on Down!
Beginning February 12, the mezzanine will be closed during evening services, so if sitting in the balcony is important to you, come to a Sunday morning worship service. This seating adjustment will save the church $25,000 annually in energy costs. That’s good for our budget, and for God’s creation.

How to Access Your 2009 Giving Statement BY TWILA ROBERTS Director of Finance
I
n a previous issue of Northland News, I talked about how the elders of the church are taking steps to reduce costs as part of an ongoing effort to be good stewards of your tithes and offerings— and of God’s creation. One of the steps we’re taking together as a congregation is moving away from mailing giving statements to your home. This move will save the
church literally thousands of dollars in postage and printing costs, and will help to reduce paper usage as we care for God’s creation. Your giving records are now available via Northland’s secure online giving system (the following screenshots give you a step-by-step overview). Your 2009 giving statement is now available for download. If you’d still prefer to receive your upcoming giving statement in the mail, contact me (407-949-7181 or twila. roberts@northlandchurch.net), and I will gladly take care of that for you. Also, in the past, we automatically sent giving envelopes to you in the mail each year. While we are still happy to provide those, we will no longer be sending them automatically. Again, this is to reduce costs and paper usage. Thank you for your faithfulness as you worship Him with your tithes and offerings! I am available if you have any questions about these changes or if you have other givingrelated questions.
STEP 4: Click on the “Contributions” tab to give your tithes and offerings via secure transaction. You can make a one-time gift, or set up recurring giving via bank draft or credit card.
STEP 1: Go to www.northlandchurch.net and click on “Tithes & Offerings” in the upper right hand corner.
STEP 2: Log in using the same ID and password you use for online worship. If you don’t have an account, you can register for one.
STEP 3: Your giving dashboard gives an overview of all of your tithes and offerings. Whether you’ve given by check, online or at one of the church’s kiosks, all of your giving is shown in this secure environment.
STEP 5: Click on the “History” tab to view all of your giving transactions in 2009. To download a printable PDF copy of your giving statement for 2009, simply click on the button that says “Tax Report 2009” (the free program Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print your statement, available at http://get.adobe.com/reader).

ll right, this article is a bit self-serving. Since I am preaching next weekend, I thought I would get the juices flowing in all of us ahead of time. Today’s article is simply a collection of verses (all in NIV) that we will be talking about next week, or honestly that we have been talking about for a couple of years in conversations, articles, blogs, groups, classes and so on. See, I figure if you are anything like me, you need to hear truth over and over and over. The more I hear it, the better chance I have of believing it when things get tough, cloudy, or I just don’t feel like it. So my prayer is that you will take time this week to read through, study any notes you can find, talk about and pray through these Scriptures, and then come next week ready to really think about the simplicity and difficulty of these Scriptures, together, as the body of Christ! Enjoy, and see you next week. By the way, maybe you could bring a friend or neighbor!
Matthew 22:36-40: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
John 6:28-29: 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 8
Acts 2:42-47: 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

ission To Japan, a Northland-supported ministry, is bringing a group of Japanese college students to Orlando to study English, learn about the Bible, and go sightseeing March 2 through 30. The program allows Mission To Japan to share the Gospel with Japanese students who know little about Christianity. Host families are needed to make a student a part of their family for the month (students will be away on a retreat during spring break March 8 to 12). Mission To Japan will take care of the students during the day by providing English and Bible classes, and by taking the students sightseeing. Host families are needed to provide a room, some meals and a loving Christian home. Host families simply drop their student off at Northland by 9:15 a.m. each weekday and pick up their student in the early evenings. A host family orientation is provided to help you have a great experience. Why not take a step of faith and allow your whole family to be part of a mission opportunity to share the love of Christ with a student from Japan? Answer: KINDNESS
Our Kind and Stern Father Romans 11:22 God is the perfect father. He is kind and stern. Stern means strict with rules and firm with decisions. We are thankful for His kindness in giving us good things and in forgiving us for our sins. We are even thankful for His sternness. We know He is not stern to make us angry or to tease us. He is stern because He wants what is best for us. Paul described it this way: “Think about how kind God is! Also think about how firm He is! He was hard on those who stopped following Him. But He is kind to you. So you must continue to live in His kindness. If you don’t, you also will be cut off.” His kindness and His firmness are opposites, but both remind us that our Father in Heaven loves us very much.
Me, too.
Draw a picture of a time when God showed kindness to you.

Her warm, gentle and fun-loving spirit ministers to young and old alike at just about all of the services each week. What a tremendous blessing it is to serve alongside such a woman of faith! What Is Lent? By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development
E
aster is the most important time of the year for believers, for it is in Christ’s resurrection that we have our hope. Lent is the 40 days before Easter that begins with Ash Wednesday. The number 40 is one that often symbolizes testing in Scripture. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness before beginning His public ministry. The Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the desert. Noah spent 40 days in the ark. So traditionally, the 40 days of Lent have been a time of confession and self-examination for believers. In the early church, new believers would go through a time of public penitence, wearing sackcloth and ashes for the entire 40 days, and then be welcomed into the church following baptism on Easter. While we don’t wear sackcloth as a part of our tradition, some people choose to go through a time of solitude, similar to what Christ experienced in the wilderness.
When Jesus entered the desert, he left behind all the expectations of others, all the hopes, all the illusions. It was just Jesus and the Father, in the Holy Spirit. But in solitude, demons come. No role is more dangerous than the reformer. There were at least three wrong ways to be the Messiah, and Jesus rejected them all. The defeat of Satan during this testing hinted at the final defeat of evil through the Cross and Resurrection. We are people of illusions. We think we understand God; we think we know ourselves and those around us. We plan our lives and are shocked when these plans fall through. We impose our wills on God or even say we know His plans. Jesus did not have such illusions, but we have illusions about Jesus. In the desert, Jesus had no illusions of his own to face and destroy: he was tested for our sake, so we would know who he was not. He did not come to bribe us with earthly bread, or astonish us with feats of invulnerability. He did not seek world domination or command an army. He simply did the will of the Father. (whitestonejournal.com) This year, don’t think of Lent as a time to merely give up chocolate or attend an additional worship service. Rather, think of it as a time to examine your illusions about God, your faith and your spirituality, to consider the Source of your hope and the amazing grace of God.

Engage God (and one another!) This Lenten Season (February 15-April 4)
L
ent, the period of 40 days leading up to Easter, presents a wonderful opportunity to actively pursue responding to who God is and what He has done. FAMILY Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
